      I know this is a little old, but I had this exact issue with a FA20DIT engine, bought from salvage yard, had P0016, after a lot of head scratching I ran the engine for about 100 miles on a clean oil change, then ran Subarus engine oil flush through it, one more oils change and the issue was completely fixed. I am able to watch the cam positions on my access port and I can see that the right intake stays right with the left intake now. I think the salvage yard engines sit around too long and the oils break/coat the journals, the flush turned my new oil completely black. I am going to do one more flush at 1,000 miles just to make sure.

    At last I was able to solve my P0016 code.
    Firstly, I flushed my engine oil with an engine flushed them changed the oil a second time -- code didn't go away.
    Next, I changed my crankshaft position sensor--- no improvement,
    Checked my VVT solonoeid too and it was working fine.
    Finally I went to the mechanic to check my timing chain and Alas, it had jumped. It was fixed and now my car is driving smoothly again.
    Thanks for this video. It has really helped me. I was already thinking of selling the car off.

    This is an excellent video, and I have a question I hope you can answer for my situation, as I am now getting additional P0012 code coming up now, and it has failed inspection sticker, for a 2011 Camry. YET: the car runs fine--both city and highway, so unclear what to do, and need to find new mechanic (no more dealer).
    Starting 4 years back, both engine light and traction light came on, but it would be go "on and off" . Mechanic at Toyota dealer diagnosed, and P0016 code came up. Did oil change first, and it was really really dirty. This helped, as the code disappeared "for awhile". Dealer then quoted $1600. However, It would come and go...but at least it went, and always passed inspections and NO driving issues at all.
    Until about 6M ago, drives FINE, but both lights have been on continually, and now I have the additional P0012 codes, and failed inspection sticker unfortunately. (light went out briefly w/reset, but they still failed me for inspection).
    Is this common? Would any mechanic be able to fix this? Is this going to be a "step by step" issue to fix, that could take awhile to resolve. I hope you can respond soon. Thank you!!

    • @AutomotiveDiagnosis
      @AutomotiveDiagnosis  9 месяцев назад

      Most likely it’s not the timing chain, normally you may get some other fault codes too if it’s from the timing chain itself (like P0014 or P0017 or misfire codes), if you get the code again after changing the oil, it is recommended to remove and clean the VVT solenoid valve on for bank 1 intake.

Also, it never happens when the engine is just idling, even when it is cold. It invariably occurs when engine is cold and engine speed is descending, usually when slowing on approach to a junction. Does this suggest a particular diagnosis? Many thanks :-)

Sure enough same code came up again. This time got two new ones again and changed both. The engine light didn’t go out. Took the dam* car over auto zone and now dam* code showing p0016 & p0017. • @AutomotiveDiagnosis
      @AutomotiveDiagnosis  Год назад

      Hi there,
      No, engine does not need to be running, normally you should have the battery voltage in one pin when ignition switch is on and also when engine is running. But if I don’t get the battery voltage on ignition on, I normally check it when engine is running as well, because not all cars are the same. Also, you will need to check the wiring for the power supply if there is any problem there. May I ask you please to write your car model down here?

    • @AutomotiveDiagnosis
      @AutomotiveDiagnosis  4 месяца назад +1

      Hi there, if it happened just after the oil change, it’s probably not from the timing chain. These two codes are for bank 1 intake and bank 2 exhaust, so considering the fact that your engine is a V6 with two timing chains, if you had a timing problem, most likely you would have P0016 and P0017 together or P0018 and P0019 together. Having a wrong viscosity oil or dirty VVT solenoid can cause these faults too.

    I have the same code but it says “Crankshaft position-Camshaft position”, I have a 2016 Audi A4, the car starts fine, it drives fine, it has pretty much all it’s power available, it doesn’t smoke or consume oil, it doesn’t make any noises at all, but it idles weird when it’s completely stopped and it happens most of the time but ramdomly, it’s like a weird on and off vibration and what I noticed is that if I turn on the heater or A/C the problem almost goes away or it goes down a lot, no one has been able to find a solution for my problem

    • @AutomotiveDiagnosis
      @AutomotiveDiagnosis  Год назад +2

      Hi there, it seems to be a different issue than P0016, this code might have happened due to an intermittent problem so please erase the code and see if it comes back up again. It it appears again and it happens randomly, it could be VVT solenoid valve (that must be removed and cleaned only). The problem that you explained it could be only for a dirty throttle body. So when engine idles and you have released the gas pedal, if throttle body is not clean, it can affect the airflow at idle, and the reason that it disappear when you turn the A/C ON, is because engine control module increases the engine RPM at that condition to compensate the A/C compression operation and RPM drop, so as soon as ECM increases the RPM, throttle body will open a little and there would be no more restriction for airflow.

    • @AutomotiveDiagnosis

      If code appears time to time it’s not from the timing chain itself, most likely it could be from a loose connection on intake VVT solenoid or Intake Cam sensor or Crank sensor. Oil sludge around the VVT solenoid can cause the same issue as well.

    Correction:
    I understand that some CKP and CMP use 5V reference for the power source; you will not find 12V anywhere on these configurations.
    It is important to mention this, as viewers could incorrectly conclude that their PCM or electrical system has a fault that doesn't exist...
    I found a RUclips that also said there are 12V, 5V, and 10V (sensor) systems out there.
    I have never seen a 10V reference, but I don't doubt it. [I have not Googled it to see what vehicles use that, but it would make sense. 9 or 10 volts would be stable as it is below the lowest 'variable' battery voltage that the system would see.]
    Consult you manual, or Google for your exact vehicle.
    If you get a consistent 5V that is within a few percent of 5.00V (or 10V), at several sensors in your car, then you should be safe to conclude that your car is using that voltage as power to it's sensors...

      Thanks for the comment and provided information. I always refer anyone to the workshop manual to review the specifications as not all cars are the same. But for the power source on CMP and CKP, I have seen both 5V and 12V power source and it depends if power supply is provided by ECM or Engine control relay. The latest one I remember was KIA Mohave 4.6 L, and all CMPs were getting the power supply from the engine control relay which was obviously battery voltage.
      But as you said, no one can consider one specific value for all different engine types as each ECM has been designed with a different software and logic which makes the configuration different.

      @@troubleshooter1975 Thanks for sharing the situation. That's exactly right, not having access to the SM and watching a video which is generally made (without referring to a specific model) may overwhelm someone, that's why I started making some videos, by mentioning the car model, and at the same time I show all the specifications in the SM including all values and configurations for that specific car, hoping to be more helpful.

      For E-CVVT, you can check the power supply on the E-CVVT motor and also you can reset the E-CVVT with scan tool. It might work on your case.

    • @AutomotiveDiagnosis
      @AutomotiveDiagnosis  9 месяцев назад

      Hi mate, it should have hard starting because you have car sensor fault code, and as this signal is missing in ECM, you have to crank the engine for longer time so ECM can compensate it. You need to check the cam sensor on intake bank 1

      There are different causes for this code as you see in the video, most of them will only affect the engine power, but if it’s from timing belt/chain, it’s better not to drive the car and have it checked as timing belt/chain failure may cause to engine mechanical issues.
