    This is why I diy’d my microlocs: cost me nothing but time & I do my own reties quarterly over a week or two cuz I don’t have the patience to retie more often or in one sitting. I’ve never braided & banded or done a vinegar rinse. I just wash weekly with a sulfate free clarifying shampoo, rub in leavein conditioner, oil my ends & go. It’s the best & easiest hair style I’ve ever had (3yrs in).

    Some of the things you mentioned are a matter of perspective. I can see how braiding and banding can be tedious coming from having very short hair but if your hair was loose and that length you would not only have to section but you would then have to detangle, dry and style your hair. So by comparison only having to braid and band is not alot. Also if you've been locked for 2 years then you shouldn't need to still braid and band. Also the apple cider vinegar wash is an as needed thing so you shouldn't be doing it often enough for it to be an inconvenience. The next thing is, if you are paying someone to do your reties and it is taking them 8-9 hours then you need to find another loctition. It should only take them 3, 4 hours max.

      You captured all my thoughts. Reties by a loctician should NEVER last 8hrs. Unless you have an INSANE amount of locs even then it's unheard of. Plus, braiding and banding is optional if one's hair is prone to slippage. Her hair is tightly coiled so I'm sure she didn't have issues with that. All that said, to each their own.

      @@ketoafrikana4953 But did yall year that she's going every 2 months. The average time for sisterlocks retigthening is 4-6 hours and it's recommended 5-7 wks for the timeframe. Eight weeks could be a lot of new growth.

    I have never enjoyed doing my hair and I’ve always been pretty useless at it. I couldn’t cornrow or even do neat braids. However, I decided to do my own retightenings for the first time last month and it wasn’t as bad as I thought. I made some mistakes, but overall, once I got into the swing of things, it turned out quite well. Following the interlocking pattern wasn’t hard, I just had to be careful I didn’t accidentally combine any loc (which I did, but it’s not the end of the world). I don’t have the money or time to go to the salon every two months any more so I’m happy to do this going forward. It’s only once every 2 months which is just 6 times a year. Other than that, I don’t have to do anything to my hair daily so it’s a small price to pay for daily hair freedom. Also, I now know that if there is ever another world crisis, or I move location, I don’t have to worry about finding a loctician 😄

    Been thinking of locing my hair for stress-free and low maintenance reasons. I guess it’s basically the same with maintaining loose hair.

    • @Penelope416
      @Penelope416 Год назад +4

      It depends on how small or big your locs are. Essentially having traditional locs is typically less maintenance. But it would also depend on your schedule, the technique (interlocking or retwisting) and how often you may maintain your locs. Unless you go semi freeform. Then, even less maintenance is required.

    • @nyny9598
      @nyny9598 Год назад +1

      Locing your hair, more or less if you're going for traditional locs, WILL be less maintenance by far. I can't speak on sister locs or micro locs, but I know that traditional locs FOR SURE are less work and easier to maintain and a lot less stressful than loose natural hair.

      I agree with previous comment. I am different. I have miro locs . I just got my hair retied yesterday. It took less than 2hours. I go every 8 weeks. Several other people in the shop, representing different hair, types and thicknesses were coming and going as well and the time that I was there. But as you said, perhaps it is your hair or maybe even the person doing it.

    Edit: I wash my hair every two weeks eventhough my loctian says only once a month. This is because I workout a lot. My retie is evey month (4 weeks) and costs me $45 per hour and takes 5 hours ($225). I have curly afro hair with medium length. My hair status is five months and not locked.
    I wish I had found you a while ago. All you mentioned is true. One tip I wish someone told me is how long it takes the hair to loc. I have been locked for over 5 months, and my hair is still not locked. My loctian lets me wash only once a month, and this caused a huge issue for me. The hair gets really oily if you wait more than a week, let alone a month. I'm really debating whether or not to keep it. I've spent so much money for the installation, and retighting is $45 per hour, and it takes 5 hours to retie every month. It's a lot of work and not as affordable or manageable as others make it to be. My advice is to do it if you're willing to wait a month to wash your hair, especially if you work out regularly. The wash process is not easy either. You have to do the braid and band method until the hair fully locks, and in my case, it might take it a year to fully lock. Some hair locks in one month, and others take much longer. Please, please don't be fooled like me. It costs more money and time if your hair doesn't lock right away.

    8 hours to do your retightening? What?
    Your loctician is very slow. Is she new?
    It should take 2-4 hours for thin to medium density and maybe 6 for fuller density.
    I've never heard of a an 8-hour retie 😮.
    Did you do any research before doing them? Because all of this is dicussed at consultation. Sisterlocks are a proper commitment and way too expensive to get if you're unsure of the process and what it requires. My loctician told me to not get them if i wasn't ready for the process due to the retightening schedule.
    I've had mine for almost 3 years and I absolutely love mine. I retie every 8 weeks. Your hair looks great!

    I think your loctician didn’t do a good job telling you the right information. Sisterlocks or microlocs are low maintenance, and stress free lifestyle seriously. The whole wash day thing, well is not how it’s supposed to go. Yes at the beginning until 1year or when your hair locs, it’s important to brand and bands your hair in section. But you don’t have to wash section by section. You can wash all your hair at once. And that is only for the 1st year. Sisterlocks and microlocs are very versatile. So many style you can do and the good thing is that you don’t have to detangle or take down your braids you pay 250 or more then start over again. Sisterlocks or microlocs is your own hair and it grows and get longer with time. And also maybe your loctician is new so her retie take a lot of time or because you do your retie every 2 months, she has to do a lot of repair and clean your lines so that’s on you sis. Anyways , do your research before committing to something. Maybe it’s simple not for you. Maybe cutting your hair short is what works for you and it’s beautiful and suites you well!
