After 9 or so years of Sisterlocks, the world changes, and the concerns shift. The pandemic lead to home retightening and maintenance, and I quickly learned that weeks go by fast and within 8 to 10 weeks, smaller locks will break near the roots because of the weight of the hair. This is why it is so important to be prepared to retighten by 6 to 7 weeks!!!

Hi so if you don’t retighten in 6-7 weeks it will pop? Why? I’m research my start before the commitment

    • @ThePreciousfab
      @ThePreciousfab 3 года назад +19

@@helenam529 This varies based on texture and any weak areas. So my quick answer is not always, but maintenance is important!! As many women age, the hair thins, so it is important with locks to be watchful for those areas especially if the hair is long or fine textured in areas. I was experiencing some stress shedding and post menopausal shedding, so any area where the locs grew fast, but they were long, I found a few vulnerabilities. I lost a few because I waited too long to retighten. The retightening helps reinforce the strength of the loc. If one doesn't retighten and the hair is thinning, that heavy loc can break off. If you're younger or have thick, dense hair, then it may not be a big issue, but even still because of the size of Sisterlocks, it is best to keep with a retightening schedule of 6 to 7 weeks.

This is do true. Even my "friends" entertained people who said my hair was ugly and unkempt. I like my hair, I'm in college I usually wear it in one, it's in a bit of a awkward length stage so wearing it down isn't something I'm comfortable with to do outside, at home I definitely do it . I'll wear it down outside just not as much as I'd want to. Sometimes I feel so ugly uk, but it's a part of my journey and I would never turn back....unless I end up with a medical condition that requires me to remove them

I was not prepared for how long it would take me to retighten my hair, lol. I have thick hair with varying densities, and I DIY installed 343 locs in my hair. I designed my own grid pattern, and I love how it looks, how it falls, and the versatility of my parting. However, my grid is so unique that I doubt I'll ever be able to enlist the service of a loctition because my parting is so (predictably) unpredictable. Thank you for this video, I enjoyed it very much! You and your hair look beautiful

I didn’t worry about the time it took because growing up getting braids done it took hrs so I got use to sitting in the chair for hrs at a time lol. It will be 1 yrs in the middle of February . I'm battling bunching right now with some of my sisterlocks. My loctition says it's because I didn't braid and band. I told her I do. She said I didn't leave them in until it dried. I told her I leave them in until the next day. She said then they weren't tight enough. So I'm like UGH OK, it's my fault 😁 geez.

When I went through the bunching phase I was terrified. I had these huge chunky ragged locs in the back and they would snag and hurt. I don’t know exactly when it happened but they just fixed themselves and became smooth and all the same size. I was shocked

You have to fight them suckers on or right after wash day. Your hair will be softer because they are wet. I used Indian hemp hair grease mixed with olive oil and a cup of water. Separate your hair into 4 sections and start at the front, separate one loc at a time and run wet fingertips over one loc then follow up with the hair grease. If your hair is connected at the roots, try to wet the roots and really be gentle and add that grease for slip. Start at the roots around the perimeter of each section and work your way to the center of each section, then you go to the next section. You start at the front of your hair because that is the first thing people see. You can hide the jacked up back until you get to it when you're out in public!!

Bunching is a natural phase of locs as they mature. I've had 2 different sets of locs. I wore traditional locs for 5 years and I am now 1.5 years into my micro loc journey and both times I experienced bunching. I will smooth out eventually; at least mine did.

It's apart of the process especially if you have a looser curl pattern. It wouldn't matter if you did braids vs plats or did shampoo at all it'd still bunch.

Everything you’re saying further confirms that I am ready! I am a real 4c 😩 however, I love my hair. I have wanted Locs for years and now I’m 9mos in and loving it! I am a natural hair stylist so I’m up on game for the maintenance. For me tho, the less I wash, the more it grows. I haven’t had any problems at all. I do, however, keep it moisturized as needed but I try not to do too much. I have learned in my study on Locs that we as Americans have manipulated the loc journey. In the culture of locking your hair, we are doing it all wrong, which further lets me know that whatever works for you….do that🤷🏾‍♀️

I had 400 braidlocs but I'm in the process of combining them. Don't take the journey likely, it's still a lot of work. I don't regret getting my braidlocs, but I do wish I knew what I knew now, however most of what I've learned and still learning is by experience. Your hair has really blossomed very nicely. Anyone considering getting micro locs should have thick skin. In the beginning your hair will shrink a lot and won’t have much volume for some months. Don’t have unrealistic expectations for your hair You really need to have patience and trust the process. If u can learn to accept your hair , you’ll truly enjoy the hair freedom and the journey 😀

Yes. I started micro locks in Jul, DIY after watching so many videos. I've interlocked 2x so far. I started with boxed braids and twisted down. 4c hair. I retighten at night while watching TV. I don't remember how many installed. In love w/the volume and curly ends. I was tired of combing and detangling and failed styles. I've had many that unraveled because I didn't braid down enough before twisting, plus I spray my hair with water every few days. I've dyed before I started and dyed before my 2nd interlocking. I braid and twist and can do hair so I have no issues with my journey so far. However my hair is a lil thin where ppl put baby hair and gets frizzy and curly quick. But the messiness adds volume. I love different. ❤❤❤

I payed $1000 for the installation of my sister locks with only 6 inches of hair. I wanted mine professionally done. Then retires where $200 to $150 depending who did it. And my hair grows really fast so I can’t go past 4 weeks because my hair grows too fast. After 10 months I payed $325 to do the retightening class, now I know how to retighten my own hair so I don’t have to pay that $200 - $150 every 4 weeks.
I’m 3 weeks I will be 1 year into my sisterloc journey and I love it. The process is interesting but I did my research so I new what to expect. And I don’t regret it.
Personally I didn’t mind spending the money, I had already plan to take the retightens class and knew how much money I needed to spend to get me to where I am right now. I thought about it for 5 years before I decided to install my sisterlocs.
Everyone is different, every hair texture is different, so do your research and decide what’s best for you.
    Blessings Girlies 😘❤❤

I have been thinking about starting my own sister locks for some years. I have a niece who has locks and her locks are gorgeous! When done and cared for properly, locks are a beautiful hair-style. My biggest worry for myself is that my hair has became thinner after I reached 20 - 21 years old, after I had my second child (I am 48 yo now) -- I also started getting my first gray hairs at that time, and so I fear that locks may not look good for me. I love and want the look, but I still am uncertain if I should begin locking my hair because of my fine, thinning, and graying hair.
I would love advice for us with fine/thin hair. Is the lock-journey possible for us? Or should we accept that we should avoid the lock journey.

    Beautiful commentary on SL 😊
But please be careful out here when it comes to your SL , everyone is not out here for your good on your hair periodT.
I let a girl In Hayward CA, name Kristin do my Sisterlock install- 🤦🏽‍♀️ she was awful to say the least and very unprofessional.
I went to her for a couple of more months, but my gut told me to stop going to her.
She did not know what she was doing. She did not do the Sisterlocs grid- she messed up my hair- and had the nerve to get upset because I stopped tipping her. In the meantime I was looking for a new sister Loctician ….and I actually reported her to Sisterlock foundation . I have a new lady now , in San Leandro California. She is amazing ! Some of these folks out here do not want to take care of your hair. They only want the money. And her attitude was definitely from the devil..
If you feel it in your gut, please do your research. Do not go to the first person you see! This is my second set of Sisterlocks. Soon I will be doing a channel myself regarding my Sisterlock journey. 😉 be safe out here folks when it comes to your hair!
