- Finally getting to test the new welder out on the Jeep. As you'll see in the video some things didn't go as planned and I'm still not use to the heat this can put out. All in all everything worked out for the best and I was able to get the Motobilt U-bolt eliminator kit tacked in as well. This welder is a huge asset to the garage and i can't wait to keep pushing it and myself to get better. Thank you for watching!

FYI ruff stuff makes a u-bolt eliminator that adds 2' to your stretch. may help with your driveshaft angle. love this build
That’s really good to know, I actually haven’t looked to much into Ruff stuff products but if what I have turns out to not work for me I’ll be sure to check them out. Thank you for the recommendation and thank you for watching!
Why can I not get a neighbor like you.
I have a 94 YJ with the 4.0. Almost all stock. The original owner lost a leg and wanted to keep the Jeep. So he had a shop install a chevy 350 automatic trans in it using a Novak adapters kit. Other than the trans change it's all stock. It's my new project. Nit going as extreme as you but it's just a toy to tinker on. I already have a rough country 2.5 inch spring lift, new body mounts with 1 inch of lift built in and I am going to get heavier shackles with about 1 inch of lift. My plan is just 35's for tires. Just a mild trail riding and weekend trip through the country vehicle. Mostly just something to tinker on. When I start the project I will be showing progress on my RUclips channel. Just so family and friends can see or anybody that wants. I'm no RUclipsr, LOL...
I agree^^^^
Shane that’s awesome and sounds like you’re on the right track to having a fun project. My first stage of my Jeep was very similar to what you’re doing; 35’s, 1” body lift, suspension lift, and all those goodies. It was a blast for weekend trails and also jumping around on the weekends and sometimes back and forth to work. In my head we all need a toy to tinker on lol. You’ll have to let me know when you start posting videos so I can check them out! My RUclips videos were the same way just kinda making them for myself, friends and family to look back on but I have awesome people like yourself that enjoy watching them so it makes me want to keep doing it. I’m no RUclipsr either haha just some guy that doesn’t know what he’s doing but figuring it out lol. I appreciate the support and good luck with your build! Thank you again for watching!! 🤙🏻🍻
Good work. Your welds look great actually better than a lot of fabricators.
That’s very kind of you, thank you. I want to say it’s probably 90% the welder itself lol but hopefully with more practice I’ll only get better. Thank you for watching!
Awesome work. I have an ‘88 YJ that needs some attention. You’re motivating me sir. Keep it up 👍.
I bought the Multimatic 215 a couple of years ago. Now I want the 220 🤦🏻♂️
Appreciate that Jason and I’m glad I can be a motivator! I feel if more people had YJs to work on this world would be a better place lol. I HEAVILY considered the 215 when I was trying to decide what to get but my awesome wife helped talk me into the 220 lol. Thank you for watching and good luck with your YJ
Enjoying your vids and subscribed. Bought an 89 YJ Sahara with a blown 6-cyl. I’ve got a stroked sbc, 700r, dana 44 Ox locker & dana 60 truetrac 4:88 gears, 4.5” rough country lift and 1” body lift to install. Planning 35” tires all for a general purpose vehicle. I’m near Trenton NJ wish we were neighbors.
Thank you Mitch! and welcome to Altered life 🍻 sounds like you have yourself a badass YJ build on your hands. Best of luck to you with your project! I wish I had a neighbor that had a YJ build too haha but you’re only a few hours away so we’re kinda neighbors lol
I love your U bolts at 14:38 😜 good on you for back tracking to do it right. This is gonna be sweet, getting some ideas for my own project 🤔
Hahaha I know right 😂 when I was first trying to get the axle under it I wanted to make it a roller so bad and didn’t want to wait for parts lol so out came the harbor freight ratchet straps. Glad I can help out with your project 🤙🏻
A good way is to weld in washers for your bolt holes
That’s a good idea, I’ll have to keep that in mind next time I run into a situation like that.
I would have just sleeved the cross member with a piece of DOM. I hate redoing stuff but it usually ends up better.
Yeah that would have worked also but like you said I’m much happier with the version 2 of the mounts
I commented earlier on part 3, I've watch everything in reverse, so I'm caught up. I kinda hate I chickened out on cutting the floor out of my 87 and repairing my 87 frame as its really not THAT BAD, but I went and bought a rust free tub + frame and I'm starting from there.
Some of the goodies I have here already ...

Offenhauser 4 bbl intake w/ Holly 4 bbl carb... thinking on switching this to the Holley Sniper EFI kit though. all this going into an I6 4.2L @ 40 over.
Still thinking on steering box and going with 35's or 37's on 17x8 wheels and still trying to decide between a few of those options. I've also recently acquired a Hardtop, full doors, I already had half doors and soft top, I'm going through all the doors mechanical workings and all new rubber too, then Raptor Liner in 2 tone frame, body, doors and I'm not even done tearing down my original 87 Jeep. I wish I had the patients and time to record the build.. but that's not happening... maybe some pieces of the build and show the final result and post those up...who knows. Anyway following your build now.
Dang man!! That is a hell of a sweet project. I will say having the fresh new stuff will make life so much easier. I put months of work getting the frame fixed and countless hours on the body as well and it’s still not done lol. You have some real dang good parts and it’ll pay off when done. Going to be a sweet build for sure!! The recording does take patience and a lot of time so it slows down progress pretty good. But I think filming big events and maybe making mash up of different key parts of your build would be cool. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch through the videos and support the channel and the build. Good luck with your project!! 🍻🤙🏻
Get you a line level, bud! Will save you a lot of time when it comes to lining things up. I was thinking that when u were struggling with your “plumbob” lol
Lots of clamps help warping.
When you weld you are always going to have warpage. Drill the holes out. Put bolts on with washers and weld washers in place makes the mount stronger also
Appreciate the tip, definitely going to have to use that next time I run into this situation 👍🏻
Where exactly would I weld them washers? To the either side of the bolt holes or onto the bolt? I want to do this. Thanks
@@misaelsantiago the way I interpret the idea is to drill out the holes in the mount large enough so what ever you’re trying to bolt is in the location you want then weld the washers to the outside of the mount essentially now making the new hole in the location you need while adding the additional thickness to the mount. It’s a great idea and I’ll have to use that in the future.
@@altered_life Exactly it is a common practice on offroad race trucks
@@misaelsantiago yes either side of bolt holes on the mount. allows for movement while welding without having to tear it all apart if it warps a little.
It warped when you did the weld.
Yeah I just didn’t think it could have warped that much especially since I welded it in a way it should have warped down instead of up. But it’s all learning experience and I was able to make it much better the second time around
Bro is a beast and I salute you my guy! Check out FISHER FUSION WELDING + METAL FABRICATION in REDMOND, WA
Thank you! I’ll definitely check them out 👍🏼
Looks great...I would have just made a new bracket to fit. Your way was much cleaner 😂🤣😂🤣
Lol the thought went through my head 😂 but I knew I’d be upset down the road if I didn’t do it right haha
🤦🏻♂️I was yelling no you don’t have to cut the frame like you could hear me lol
😂 yeah I do things the hard way lol
Definitely would not have cut them off.
I know it’s too late now but it would have been better to remake the crossmember tube than the mounts. Just sayin’...
Yeah I did consider it but I liked how the tube itself was built and at the time I didn’t have a way to bend tubing so for me it was easier to just remake that mounts that I wasn’t happy with anyway haha
@@altered_life it still came out great.
I appreciate it John 👍🏻 I’ll probably be making a second crossmember in the near future to the Atlas support so I’ll definitely get more practice
Nice job! Why the eliminator? I thought about it, but am Leary of only the weld holding my springs on. I have some questions???? How can we exchange info?
Appreciate that! There’s a few reasons the eliminator kit is beneficial but for me it’s mostly because I like the use of regular grade 8 bolts. I think technically once you torque down U-bolts they can’t be reused so I’d have to get new ones if I had to pull them for some reason. Also having less stuff below the axles to catch on rocks it’s a bonus. The best way to message me is through Instagram private message @the_altered_yj. If you don’t have an Instagram let me know and I can get with you about another means. Thank you for watching!
Idk if it's just me, but i feel like anything i was gonna do to a frame, i'd wanna use some 6010 to make sure that shit is STUCK STUCK lol. I know short circuit mig don't penetrate very well. How you liking the machine so far? I almost bought that one, i had my eye on it for a while but I ended up ordering the miller multimatic 255 off of bakers gas this morning. it looses the Ac tig capability, but it has a higher output, higher duty cycle, and it does pulse mig and tig.
Hahaha yeah I’m still learning a lot when it comes to welding but I figured it’s stronger then it was from factory and I had the heat cranked where it was all but blowing through so she should hold lol. I’m loving the Miller so far, lots to still learn about it but for what I do it’s perfect. I was looking at the 255 but ultimately wanted the AC Tig so I can learn that in the future. Thanks for watching 🍻
Que corriente utiliza
I’m using 220v but the welder can run on 110v as well
Do not weld it all at once let it cool off
There were points where I would weld and move to different areas so that it could cool but it was a learning lesson and actually ended up working out for the best
why dont you just leave the bolt in or collar or pin
In the end I wasn’t super happy with my original brackets so remaking them made me happier hahah. Part of the reason I didn’t leave the crossmember in was because I didn’t want to melt the bushings
🇺🇸👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Who makes that cart the Multimatic 220 on? Is it a DIY, or commercially available?
Thanks
It is actually a harbor freight Vulcan cart. I think I grabbed it on sale for under $100. It’s been working great and my only complaint is that it’s only designed for a single tank where my welder is able to run a dual tank so I may modify it in the future but for now and for the money it’s working great!
When I got my 220 the first thing I fab'd was a dual cylinder cart, has 5" swivel caster so I will travel where you want it to go. Of course it's a bit overkill strong. The Miller cart I believe is around $300 bucks, mine cost about $100 including the casters.
That’s awesome! After using this single tank cart I definitely want to modify it for a dual tank. Especially if you were able to do it for $100, when I get time I think I’m definitely going to be making/modifying the cart. Thank you for the info and thank you for watching
@@altered_life Built the cart from scratch, the cheapo HF and others are not strong enough for two big cylinders, might get by for two small cylinders. Just fab up a new one and don't look back.
Yeah you’re right, I always forget about the cheap Chinese metal they are made from. I’ll definitely look at making one from scratch now
Distortion is a cruel bitch, tack hss to stop the pull
Yeah you can say that again, the more I use this welder the better I’m getting and definitely learning a lot
I didnt think it was legal to weld a frame
I don’t think there is any legality issues welding a frame. Even if there were, luckily this Jeep is mostly off road use anyway
