CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Pink' (Jason London) and Wooderson (Matthew McConaughey) introduce Mitch (Wiley Wiggins) to the upper classmen at the Emporium.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Like George Lucas' American Graffiti, Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused is an affectionate look at the youth culture of a bygone era. While Lucas took aim at the conservative 1950's, Linklater jumps ahead a generation to the bicentennial year of 1976 to celebrate the joys of beer blasts, pot smoking and Frampton Comes Alive. Set on the last day of the academic year, the film follows the random activities of a sprawling group of Texas high schoolers as they celebrate the arrival of summer, their paths variously intersecting at a freshmen hazing, a local pool parlor and finally at a keg party.

No better song could be playing when they walked in. Hurricane is a classic

facts
Balenese is cool.
This movie is probably the most stunning and accurate depiction of high school ever in film.
Except nobody works, nobody studies , nobody cares about grades and nobody has a bad home life. other than that, totally real.
cinnaminson 06 The film deliberately avoided those subjects to focus on aimlessness.
cinnaminson 06 I mean the school year just ended in the film
@@cinnaminson0653 it's one day!
@@Oriontrollsftw2 and everything happens in one day/night.
Every time I walk into an establishment with people, I always have "Hurricane" playing in my head because of this scene
Dude I thought I was the only one. Cheers brother!
Lol same
Probably a great mindset to have when entering a room full of people. Enter with confidence.
I think you nailed it. I came to this clip because I remember the song so fondly but didn't remember why. You are wrong though when "hurricane" is playing it is because I'm walking in :)
I thought I might put this out there for everyone watching this video. Most people are thinking "damn this movie is awesome why couldn't I go back to the 70's?" The truth is that when you don't have something anymore you want it back. People that lived in the 70's never thought "omg this is the best years of my life" no they actually thought it sucked just like everyone that lives in 2015 the truth is in a couple decades we are going to be looking back at 2015 and saying damn those were the years.
The best thing to do is just to live in the moment and make your life the best it possibly can! Or else the years are gonna pass by and your gonna be looking back regretting what you did in the past
+CriMs MixZizz at least they got Rock music.
+CriMs MixZizz You're partly right... But I think most people appreciated the 70's because everything was real back then, no internet, no iphones, no facebook. People appreciated the time spent with another human being, cuz you couldn't just text them wherever they are. And the music.. of course... Then you had to wait for the album release, buy a physical copy if you find one, and when you pay for the music you kinda appreciate it more. Now you can download almost everything... and if you can't - there's always youtube.
+CriMs MixZizz I don't know. If these are THE years then the future is looking worse and worse. I don't think anyone besides the kings of global business and their families are enjoying the 20teens. Maybe they are better than the 00s but I remember the 90s clearly and things were good back then in a way they are not now.
Wise words my friend.
At some point in this classic, the red haired girl mentions how the 60's rocked, the 70's suck and the 80's might be awesome. Well, my high school years, 75-79, were awesome, and I must also confess that every time I see and / or think about this movie, I find myself fighting back tears. I miss the 70's.
its to create irony
Actually, she said "radical," which was humorous because that became a catchphrase in the 80s.
Yea man I bet the 70s was great... Hurts me that I never experienced it :(
My high school years were 90-94 and the music was great then too. Summer before grade 12 this movie came out and we all watched it / bought the soundtrack.

yes my fake memories about being a teenager in the 70s
Don’t bother with life alert
For we have all fallen
And cannot get up
I was a teenager in the 90s and it was the same thing. except there would have also a few Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat arcade games next to the pinball machines. The rest, was exactly the same.
Same
@@carl_anderson9315 Back in the 90's, I knew a guy who was young in the 60's and 70's. He said the 90's was a lot like that era. I certainly enjoyed it
90's had the perfect blend of Technology and real Human interaction.
The 70's was a cool 😎 time to be young and free. Reagan ruined everything with his useless War on Drugs in 1980. He pretty much ended the middle class in the United States with his Trickle Down economy.
The first 10 seconds is probably my favorite 10 seconds in movie history

I think we can all relate to Mitch in this movie. Trying to act cool at your first high school party and just survive the social games haha
The way the director Richard Linklater shot Matthew Mcconaughey walking into the emporium, was supposed to be like him walking through the door of stardom.
It represents past, present, and future kings
This movie is a freaking legend. Slater makes me laugh in the worst way. "Are you cool man?" "Okay.........." LMFAO!!!
"Alright! Check ya later!"
I feel so sorry for Generation Z watching this and seeing just how much fun and social freedom and carefree adolescence was back then compared to the society and system they have now of PC and nanny state
@@stoneartisen4216 the "fun" and "social freedom" had to be hard won against all of the right-wing squares and reactionary Republicans that comprised the Nixon administration. Republicans are the party of top-down conformity and would-be "family values" (which is laughable given what they look like today!!) Thank god for the Left.
konstantinov Why bring politics into this? It’s unnecessary.

I just watched this movie. It had no real story but I still enjoyed every moment of it. When it ended I got this feeling that I wanted more. About to graduate from high school and hopefully it will be something like this.

greatest...entrance...ever
+Charles Bird no way
***** What do you consider the greatest entrance ever in a movie?
agree 100%
+Charles Bird Too right
Nah...the greatest entrance is owned by Robert de Niro in Goodfellas.
The name of this great song as Mathew enters is the incredible "Hurricane" by Bob Dylan. PERFECTLY used as the opening of the scene.
Such an under appreciated movie. People can’t look past the inappropriate bits to see how great the meaning of the movie is and how great it captures the image of what youthfulness is. Also Bob Dylan hurricane while walking into the pool hall is the greatest scene/score duo of all cinema history.
Yes! Hurricane was my favorite track off the entire soundtrack.
The way Wooderson walks in exudes so much confidence. This is where I learned to walk in some room with confidence, head up scoping the place out.
right before you trip over your shoelaces and fall on a bikers lap lmao

Did ya do the same thing he did with his hands? the old finger point?... Cringe
It looks kind of cringy to be honest, like he's trying to hard to look cool.
Jake Anthony I feel you bro
This movie grows on you so much. So many amazing characters and just such a fun time
Mitch was lucky to hang out with the coolest dudes
"Ya cool man?", "Like how?", [Laughs] "oKAY..."
"But one time he could've been the champion of the world", oh Wooderson how your time is passed.
The use of that part of the song, at that moment, was just perfect.
If you ever feel insecure or anxious about walking into a place just play this song in your head...fixed.
One of those movies you HAVE to own.
LOVE THIS PART SO MUCH THAT SLOW MOTION ENTRANCE WAS LIT
Watched this film yesterday for the first time since freshman year of high school (15 years ago), and I gotta say.. It didn't resonate with me back then, but holy shit, is this movie accurate in its depiction of the carefree attitude of high school life. I definitely miss the simpler times.
My high school years were from 1997-2001. This encompasses every weekend I ever had during that time:
How are we gonna get weed?
How are we gonna get beer?
Where are we gonna hang out?
I imagine it’s the same for every generation and that’s why this film is timeless.
went to highschool from 2015-2019. me and my friends had the same experiences looking for weed, beer and a place to hangout
Mine was 2005-2009
I graduated in 1977 and yep, this is EXACTLY what life was like.
Whenever I feel insecure /social anxiety walking into the grocery store ...I just imagine this song playin Yes I do Yes I do
This is exactly how we used to walk in to stuff in High School and clubs and bars in college. I had it mastered : )
Are you cool man?
+Brian Boyd Like...how?
Heh ... oookay .... lol
+Cecilia Elizabeth shit I thought he said like a cow?
Cecilia Elizabeth "He was just asking you if you get high"
What like Smoke Pot? I never have before
The Hurricane - what a song! And Wooderson walks in that pool place like he's the champion of the world. One of my favourite scenes from one of my favourite movies ever.
I love how they could just be like "we should have a beer buster later on" and just be able to go and do it. With my parents, just going to a movie requires 2 months prior planning.
the black guy is the 2nd coolest person in the movie
melvin
agree lol
"SOul POle"
he was the opposite of Ben Affleck.
Lonely Sith In what way?
Vs 2017, walking into a kickback or party staring at your phone without looking at one person when you walk in.
Wow, Slater is so iconic. I've actually met people exactly like him and I can't believe how accurate that "okay" is lmao
Ole wooderson in his late 20s hanging with the high school kids. He’s the guy that every town has that never left his home town. I graduated back in 2018 and we had a guy just like that reminded me so much of him he was 25 and came up town to the parking lots we’d sit at or to the parties we’d throw but we liked him since he’d always buy our beer
Literally can't watch this clip without immediately sitting down and rewatching the whole movie. love it!
the slow mo shot of them walking through the emporium is one of the greatest tone setting shots of all time.
I love this movie because I can watch it over and over again and I always see something new. The funny thing about this scene is, the whole KISS statues was never really fully developed but in the script they were more obvious.
00:01 how I think I look when I walk into the club
Going to school in the 70s was the best times ever I miss those days
When I moved into the middle of no where Missouri for a few months I had to wait a week for cable and could only play dvds and I played this every day all day for background noise and not once got tired of it !! Watching it right now ..sooo much nostalgia in one movie
having graduated in 1977 just a few hours from where this depicts, i have to say that this is a SPOOKY accurate depiction of what it was like for us. The only minor exaggeration was the severity of the hazing the men went through (We were hazed and got "Licks" , but it was not as severe as portrayed here). Everything, odwn to the last detail, is spot on for the time.
Did you grow up in Texas? The writer/director Richard Linklater based the movie on his teens in the Houston area. Perhaps they were rougher there.
@@Chapin-pc2kz As I said, I grew up in another town just a few hours away. I don't doubt that he is depicting his experiences exactly as they were for him, as with the exception of male hazing it TOTALLY depicts my own experiences. Every place was different. In my town, hazing of male freshmen were limited to a few days only. It used to be much worse, but I certainly "Took Licks" a few times. It was totally no big deal though.
My High School was VERY big. With around 400 graduating Seniors, nobody could take that many licks and live.
@@georgehollingsworth2428 Could totally see this mean rough stuff being accepting in a place like Texas
This movie was set in my Sr year of HS...1976-77. It was one good time after another and we enjoyed it all. It’s worth being old now to have been young then.
I graduated in 1976 so this movie is about my graduation week. However most of the characters are Class of '77 -- the next year's seniors.
JStarStar00 yes, that was my class, however i always wished i had been “76”, the Bicentennial year!
I remember watching this movie as a freshman, naive to the world and only dreaming to live in the 70s and have an awesome night like these kids. Now I’m 17, senior about to graduate and it’s amazing. Everyone in this comment section keeps saying how gen z isn’t able to experience this because of technology, but they’re wrong. my highschool life is finally turning into this movie, going out to party, smoking and blasting loud music in the cars, and great fashion is finally coming back. It’s a good time to be young and I’m enjoying it as much as I can.
Hey Slater you got a joint?
Man do I ever!
The slow motion walk into the Emporium is my favorite scene in movie history. Unbelievable
life was a lot cooler before smart phones
Time flies i went from 8th grader watching this to senior to 35 in blink of an eye.
Favorite movie hands down .
I miss the days when nobody had cell phones.
What an absolutely perfect song for this scene. Scene is cool as hell man
I feel so sorry for Generation Z watching this
This must be torture comparing youth life then to now
As a Gen Z, can confirm
Yep...
indeed 😔
nah, in a small town in high school right now its pretty much like this
Actual torture
Pretty good representation of high school life in the 70's...this show was an instant classic. Hollywood makes nothing but garbage nowadays. 1960's through the 1990's had some great movies.
I agree man( even though I'm gen z) there was something special during the 20th century. Now all we have is dumb down superhero flicks.
Hollywood running out of ideas coming out with all of these remakes and sequels
@@paranoidplane9799 i hate stupid comments like this, superhero movies are a minority. Sure they are the big blockbusters but they are still a minority of the movies that gets made every year. There's so many other great movies being made constantly so just please stop talking bullshit.
@@paranoidplane9799 couldn’t agree more. Along with everything else, culture, music, etc. I’m gen z

LITERALLY SAME OMG LETS BUILD A DAMN TIME MACHINE IM TIRED OF THIS GENERATION
Worst decade ever.....80s were far better
When I saw this projected for the first time, this was the scene that gave m chills.
The like 5 seconds when it shows Melvin is the cleanest looking scene. It just mends so well with the song
"But one time he could've been the champion of the world", oh Wooderson how your time is passed.
This movie is probably the most stunning and accurate depiction of high school ever in film.
I watched the high school kids at Huntsville High School of which this movie was about. I was just a little older going to Sam Houston State there in the same town. Richard Linklater depicted this film perfectly. When I watched this for the first time I was shocked....It's like man.......I witnessed this in real life........;)
Ugh my dad always brags about the 70's and living through em and I can't do anything about it but sit there and take it in that he lived in fucking amazing times.
"PRICKFORD!"
"Wood - have been happenin'"
That's how homies greet each other
The best part of the song is when he opened the door
Mitch feeling like a boss walking in with the coolest guy and the most popular guy in school!
When I was in high school, and watched this movie, I thought this looked like the best and most chill place ever to hang out. I wish sometimes I could go back to those days.
Favorite movie and always will be. Love showing this classic to all my friends and anyone I know!
This movie and this song (hurricane) when i was in grade 7.. Launched me into a whole knew world .. Forever grateful.. A simpler time.. But even they had their sorrows.
Look, people actually survived without the internet or cell phones or ipads. They talked to each other and had more fun in one night than kids today have in five years.
Sad but true
blah blah they said radio would destroy America once upon a time too..
Your bleak outlook of the future is painfully predictable; You see what you want to

***** in what way
Matthew Mcconaughey walking in like "I am the Master of all I survey!"
Even in the 90’s we still partied like this. Keggers at ranch parties🤘🏼🤘🏼
It's crazy how this movie was made in the 90s. Looks like it was made 70s. The crew really paid attention to detail..
Helped that it was based on the writer/director’s own experiences
There will NEVER EVER be a movie about how cool 2020 was. EVER.
"...Ok!.." Hahaha.
This was my walkout song in the minors all thanks to this scene. Bob Dylan is a living legend.
Watched this movie every day summer of 94, what a soundtrack
No cell phone phones lol they lived😂
My BF was the high school star pitcher and he would strike out nearly every batter. We won three state championships. His coach was like the one in this movie. Preaching to him about hanging around with the wrong crowd and keeping himself straight. We got high nearly every day, sometimes behind the school. Back then you were weird if you didn't get high. I had some great times.
Night of The Hurricane Benefit concert took place in Houston a few months before the events in this movie......great song to include in this scene!!
when i was grade 7 this movie blew my mind, until a grade 8er "blew" my mind away lol.
I ordered a t-shirt that says "You cool man?" I can't wait to get it!!!
The interactions are so real in this movie. Like people hanging about waiting for some party to jump off, use to be like that in highschool all the time.
We had the Best Cars Clothes and Music indeed . Hell Iam still driving a nice Chevy Nova and listening to the great music and dress like I did in the 70s and 80s . I don’t wanna grow up 😁
My dad was right his generation in the 70s and 80s were way better because people actually wanted to do things
this is the closest to the 1970s i am gonna get love this movie.
I wasnt born in the 70's , but i can tell it fucking rocked, And like the top comments said, its when people socialized instead of being in front of their computers/Smartphones all day.
