      I respectfully disagree, because in most cases, these scenes waste time explaining things that viewers either can figure out for themselves, or more likely still wouldn't get even if the scenes were there. Plus 25 minutes of additional filler would slow the pacing of this excellent movie considerably. Of course if it were at least and option on the DVD to watch with the deleted scenes people could choose for themselves, though most of these don't appear to have completely made it through post-production judging by the quality and lack of soundtrack.

    • @Handel_Opaz
      @Handel_Opaz 5 лет назад +8

      Yeah I don't know. I wouldn't include the scene of Benny O'Donnell making racist remarks about the Asian girls and giving that patriotic monologue. He is already a major asshole in the film, that scene and the one where he bullies those kids with Melvin would leave a bad taste to a (mostly) feel-good comedy. I think he was supposed to be a bigger dick than O'Bannion, who I've always considered to be more of a cartoony character, one of those "love to hate" antagonists. Implications that Benny is being abused by his dad and being a racist cunt just don't fit the tone of the movie.
      Also, O'Bannion picking on Slater about drugs is funny when you hear it once, if these deleted scenes were in the film, the same line would be there three times, so it would get old pretty quick.

    You could tell anyway but these scenes really establish Benny as a damaged hot-head. The only time you see it in the movie is at the party while talking to Randall.
    The scene where he can't get the beer open should have stayed. It was well acted by all and shows that he's just a 17yo kid that thinks he knows it all. He can't even open a beer at times.
    It's good that most of this was cut though.

    • @Handel_Opaz
      @Handel_Opaz 5 лет назад +23

      Yes I agree. Based on these deleted scenes, you can see that Benny has more depth to him as a fictional character and some backstory. O'Bannion more of a one-dimensional typical bully-jock, but Benny seems to enjoy beating freshmen because he's been abused himself (the "This is gonna hurt you more than me" line), he's somewhat more intelligent than O'Bannion, but has these sociopathic tendencies.
      I had never seen that scene before where "OB Badass" shows up at the moontower. I had heard about it but didn't know it was actually filmed. The final cut makes it seem as Benny is done with the paddling at least for a while, but that scene shows that even when they're out partying, he's going on about "getting them later". These scenes are very interesting for us diehard D&C fans, but I'm glad they were left out. The final-cut Benny is much more tolerable this way.

      I don’t know. I kind of like how they took those scenes out. The movie already had O’Bannion as the hot head, having Benny would’ve been a tad redundant. At first at 4:24 I was like DAMN, so open about the racism! But immediately after I was like "ahh. I get it. It's the early 70s. The Vietnam war had JUST ended". My parents were teenagers in the 70s. My dad tells me stories of watching the TV to hear the lottery of birthdates of who was getting drafted. My dads date was never called. That war effected EVERYONE back then. Teens were getting sent off to die in the war. Teenage girls and women's boyfriends/husbands were being killed. Parents were losing their sons to the war. Kids were losing dads. Kids and teens today have no idea how scary of a time this was. They were freakin DRAFTED. Basically kidnapped by the govt to go fight in the war. They had no say so. Kids from the 80s and 90s (I'm an 80s baby, 90s kid/preteen) dont even know what it was like to live during a time like that, but our parents did live through it. Our parents were the ones getting drafted and fighting in it.

      McConaughey on the other hand, was so cool and charismatic all round they gave him a bigger role, and set him on the way to stardom.
      Goes to show you need to be careful of behaviour on set - especially if it’s your first big role - as it may come back to haunt you.
      Pickford’s actor was a bit of a Cunt in real life and it maybe cost him a career; McConaughey so cool and chilled he gets more lines, and bigger role that set him up to eventually goes on to become a big star (his performance in true detective is masterful), whereas the Pickford actor has done nothing that I can remember after.
      (You can even pick up on McConaughey calling him ‘Prickford’ instead of Pickford, in the pool-room scene…….love that subtly - Matthew probably echoing what everyone thought of him on set there 🙌. Fucking brilliant)

Same for the girl putting on 'wand' style lipgloss - nope. We had Bonne Bell Lipsmackers and roller ball lipgloss. Just minor things, but when you lived through it, you know what's real and what's not. Loved this movie, brought back so many of my own memories!
