“THE PHONE BOOKS HERE THE NEW PHONE BOOKD HERE” “HE HATE THESE CANS” This movie was everything Steve was fn RIOT the jerk was zany and I love every damm minted of it. Universal movies it’s fun
One of the best lines, now when I quote them people claim 'that's an old movie' - lighten up, Francis, they're classics. Like '220/221, whatever it takes' which became an engineering joke after watching Mr. Mom.
My dad worked in that building through the window in the background when Steve was on the phone in Pasadena California😃He would go at lunch and watch the recording action😁The gas station was real but the church was NOT real, just there for the movie😆The Jerk is one of the BEST movies ever👍🏻ROCK ON!!!!!!!🤘🏻🤙🏻✌🏻
Holy shit, Trinidad Silva from Hill Street Blues is in that opening scene AND Bill Macy from Maude later on. Hard to believe this was released the year I graduated High School, 1979.
9:43 I had a gold '77 Sedan DeVille with the 500 cubic inch engine... that big boat could float with power, but stopping on a dime was out of the question! And, it never passed a gas station it didn't like...
1981 this was the very first movie my Mom got for the "new" VHS/VCR player (Panasonic) and holds many favorite memories, especially "Patty" the motorcycle scenes
Nobody understood why I would get so excited about the new phone books arriving. Or about my special purpose. Or that I was born a poor black child, with no rhythm. This movie was gold!
One of my favorite scenes: no diologue....just him after he cashed his big check, bought a Firebird, a pipe, Fedora with feather, and a big ugly oil painting. Yep, he is rich now.
I've never seen this movie (I know. I have not lived). So it was quite a surprise to see the Hartoonian character from Caddyshack 2. I didn't know they connected like that.
My father was Italian, grew up during WWII in Italy (13-yrs-old in 1943). His English was never good and he had a hard time with American colloquialisms, but he loved this movie.
I saw this in the theater during the first week of its release. I was eighteen, and when it got to the scene where he tries to read the Goodbye note in the bathtub I almost stopped breathing it was so funny. That, and talking to her while she slept about how long their relationship felt to him. Have any of you seen his serious work? Shop Girl was adapted from his novella, and Spanish Prisoner was written and directed by the great David Mamet. Two of my very favorite films. Bravo, Maestro Martin!
You know what I want to do. What? Guess your weight. Wow, you're really trying to be accurate! Is it getting hot in here? Wait a minute!! That's my special purpose!! lol! The funniest was when his brother snickered when his letter back home was read.
Whoever installed that water spigot on the church needs a raise.
@joblo2671. Yeah, that's back when men were men and steel was real steel!
He's probably retired by now.
That spigot wasn't bought from Home Cheapo, that's for sure.
Must’ve been the Mario brothers
I stood across the street with a friend of mine watching this scene being shot. The gas station no longer exists. Pasadena CA.
Wasn't the last random shooting in America though 😕
I haven’t seen this movie. Are you saying the shooter is randomly targeting Steve Martin’s character?
@@robbiekop7and not one gun has been grabbed. Nor has any gun right been infringed.
Gun nuts stick together until the corpses hit the floor
@@potassiumrichfoodsgo see the movie
@@potassiumrichfoods It wasn't random, he picked his name out of a phone book...
The amount of character actors/comedians in this film alone is still amazing!
Ángel Salazar who played Chi Chi in Scarface opposite Al Pacino.
@@nkmcfrln I think you might have him mixed up with Pepe Serna. I don't believe Angel Salazar was in the jerk.
@@robertesensee3494 You’re right. Thanks.
If you have not seen the whole movie, you are missing out.
The Jerk is a classic 🍿. Steve Martin's finest 💯.
Indubidubly 🙂

i like that he doesnt care about shooting someone.. but wont go past the sign cause hes not carnival personnel
*"He hates those cans! Oh, there's cans in there too!"😵💫🤣🤣🤣🤣*
First time i saw that i cried laughing for hours😂😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣
One of the best lines, now when I quote them people claim 'that's an old movie' - lighten up, Francis, they're classics. Like '220/221, whatever it takes' which became an engineering joke after watching Mr. Mom.
True comedy 🤣

That gas station scene is an absolute classic.
“It’s these CANS… He hates these CANS!!”
Steve Martin one my all time favorite comedians.
That’s not DJT? all look the same
@harold.one.feather. Stupid comment, try harder... better yet, get off the internet.
Steve Martin's first movie and I think it was his best.
RIP M. Emmet Walsh. I never knew you lived in the area where my mother grew up until you passed away.🙂
“I saw this trick in a movie” - he’s referring to American Graffiti
Disclaimer no cans were harmed in this production
I don't believe you!
Thank Goodness.
Happy 45th anniversary, _The Jerk._
🎶 "I'm picking out a thermos for yoouu 🎶
You mean I’m gonna stay this color?
Holy shit, Trinidad Silva from Hill Street Blues is in that opening scene AND Bill Macy from Maude later on. Hard to believe this was released the year I graduated High School, 1979.
Bill was everywhere and well into the Maude series when this got made.
What a Steve Martin classic!!
Carnival personnel only! damn.😂
The Latino in the passenger seat was in EVERYTHING back then. If they needed a Latino gang member in a show, he got the call.
I love the fact that he’s willing to kill somebody but trespassing on carnival grounds is a crime he won’t stoop to
"You want a fill up ........ Mrs. Nussbaum?"
1979 Cadillac Sedan deVille at the gas pump! 425 V8. When gas was around $1 a gallon.
9:43 I had a gold '77 Sedan DeVille with the 500 cubic inch engine... that big boat could float with power, but stopping on a dime was out of the question! And, it never passed a gas station it didn't like...
@@stillnotwoke The 500 V8 was last offered in 1976. All 1977 Cadillac DeVilles had the new 425. The 350 Oldsmobile diesel was offered in 1978.
Yup: my 1973 Coupe DeVille averaged about 11 city 15 highway. But it floated down the road like mobile living room! And it had a 472 four barrel!
1981 this was the very first movie my Mom got for the "new" VHS/VCR player (Panasonic) and holds many favorite memories, especially "Patty" the motorcycle scenes
Been so long since I saw this movie.
"Joint, huh? They don't make 'em that good, do they?"
The guy with the glasses takes them off to drive. Haha
That's because the guy is farsighted. He puts on the glasses to read the oil stick.
He got Stormtrooper aim
that aged well..................
Pew, pew, pew
the piece he glued onto the glasses----opti grab
Phone books. What a concept.
Jackie Mason repairing a car? I've seen everything now....😂
When oil came in cans. Bygone days
I'm somebody now
things are going to start happing to me now
Navin R. Johnson was like Maxwell Smart in his own right 😅😅
Classic! Thank you for uploading!
damn these glasses
yes sir I damned thee
Thanks to this movie, whenever someone drops a can of something, I now blurt out "He hates these cans!"
Oh my God Jack Hartounian...I now got the link from Caddyshack 2 😂😂😂
Harry and Jack must be related!
Still a stop 10 comedy of all-time for me, the movie is beginning to end insane
"Damn these glasses!"
"Yessir. I damn thee!"
And that inspired the scene in Dumb and Dumber after they discover the suitcase is full of money.
I've never seen this movie (I know. I have not lived).
So it was quite a surprise to see the Hartoonian character from Caddyshack 2. I didn't know they connected like that.
That was a union 76 gas station originally. You can tell by the signage in the garage bay area.
Mrs. Nussbaum had a five o'clock shadow. 😆
The Diving coach from Back to School!
7:04
"Dead Center! Say Your Prayers, Half-Breed!!"
Was in high school when this came out. Laughed so hard I almost pissed myself
The other funny movie was Porky's. The whole theater was laughing
the whole movie.
Windshield wiper is still hitting me, the pedestrian.
Hey Hollywood! - i double dog dare you to remake this film! The p.c. crowd would crap a bassoon! 😂
What a great scene. Never enough.
My father was Italian, grew up during WWII in Italy (13-yrs-old in 1943). His English was never good and he had a hard time with American colloquialisms, but he loved this movie.
Steve Martin is a genius ❤he is a god
I saw this in the theater during the first week of its release. I was eighteen, and when it got to the scene where he tries to read the Goodbye note in the bathtub I almost stopped breathing it was so funny. That, and talking to her while she slept about how long their relationship felt to him.

Bravo, Maestro Martin!
Mr Jerk reminds me of so many people who I used to work with.................😮
Cover me!
You’re covered !
😂
Tie rods on a 72 Buick 😂😂😂
You're our 8th customer! Youve won a free oven mitt! Ahhhh!
"he hates these cans"
I can't believe the brains cells that were activated watching this!
The shootes dialogue without these edits are hysterics.
M. Emmet Walsh RIP
Bill Macy, Jackie Mason and Carl Reiner too
"die gas pumper!!!!"
You have to respect a man who adheres to the instructions on signs.
They don't make them like this anymore
You’ve won a free oven mitt - hahahahaha
I love when Martin walks away and pauses over how sly he is...
Kane's Parents and Kane remember this movie lol 🤣
I love Steve Martin 😂😂
Any blue Chevy pulling a small church I figure that’d be the one.
Phone book, havnt seen one of them in a long time.
Johnson! Navin! R!
What brand cigarettes are these? Joint. They sure don’t make them very good.
Sounds like a typical bastard... has to be my most fav line in any movie lmfao😂😂😂😂
THE CANS!
10th and insanely early 😊
LOVE this film!!😂❤
I remember being pretty excited the first time I had my own apartment and saw my name in print in the White Pages.
Chain attached to church is reminiscent of Eddie and Wally's trick on Lumpy's car on LITB!😅
9:03 That's funny. It looks like a car with no tires has driven in there before!
Why mute curse words on the Internet? Lol.
Sign: GAS PRICES
"If you have to ask, you cant afford it."
Still true today.
"...Gas Pumper!!"
Great movie!!! ❤❤❤❤
I thought I recognized Jackie Mason’s voice, then I remembered he was the Sandman in The Fairly OddParents
Apparently this is one of Stanley Kubrick’s favorite film
ONE OF THE FUNNIEST MOVIES OF ALL TIME! Oops, caps lock, sorry.
No one sees a gunman with a rifle out the drivers window on the side of a busy road.
That was funny.
As a kid when he called Navin a "milkface", I thought he was calling him a "milkshake" instead. 😂😂😂
You know what I want to do. What? Guess your weight.
Wow, you're really trying to be accurate! Is it getting hot
in here? Wait a minute!! That's my special purpose!! lol!
The funniest was when his brother snickered when his
letter back home was read.
"I saw this trick in a movie once..." Let's see... American Graffiti?
Die gas pumper!😂
Navin got at most 20 sheets deep into a 200-300 count (palm-treed "Missouri") 1979 Yellow Pages ... and found the J's.
"Radials... Make em white walls"😂
4:34 still relevant
The new phone books here!!!!!!
Hey! He’s not carnival personnel!
We don't have defective cans! We've got a defective person out there!
Damm these glasses son!
I damm thee!
A guy here on YT is fixing that gold Valiant in a Will it Run video.
