fan of Marvel/DC movies here, teen coming of age movies are very entertaining to watch and i recall that The Breakfast Club was released in some theaters within some states back in 2015 which was to honor the 30th anniversary, i remember reading about it somewhere safari or chrome where they announced it to be displayed on the silver screen, this movie was played back in high school, especially for those who graduated in 2017 and 2018, the first time watching the Breakfast Club was truly nostalgic because i saw it in 2010 for the first time and then for the 2nd time in 2016, i imagine that it would have been more better than it already was if i was alive in the 80’s and saw it on the silver screen during that era.

Everyone talks about Carl's monologue (for good reason, it's an excellent scene), but I was really impressed with the scene where Bender, Brian and Molly talk between the books. First, the framing of that was comedy gold. We all know how Bender, Andy, and Allison's parental relationships were, but they didn't go into depth about Brian and Claire's, and I think that was a missed opportunity. Claire & Brian's dynamic was one of the more interesting to me, because it was more of a leap. Back then, popular kids & snobs would sometimes 'slum it' or 'date down' with burnout types like Bender as a way to seem edgy or rebellious, but rarely would they bother with the more academic or immature nerd types. The fact that Claire even condescends to talk to Brian and engage him in a debate is a revelation, for the time period. So, a relationship between Claire & Brian would have been even more radical.

Maybe the janitor's scene was a bit dark to be included in the movie but it should've been included as it shows how close he can relate to each student and how far he can project them into the future and how he fucked his life up and yet still doesn't hate the children since he knows he was one of them and ironically this is what has kept the last ray of light in his heart unlike Vernon who's dead inside
This very deleted scene adds more layers to his character which makes him more wise (in a way)
I like how he tells them how he fucked up with no emotions because he must have played his entire life in his mind countless times and hence couldn't feel any regrets, at least not in front of the kids
This scene is very necessary for the film

I think it’s a bit overboard as the janitor is able to relate but also to be sarcastic and treat the kids with respect. He answers back and joshes with them because of that respect. The scene with him giving predictions lasts too long and is a bit too dark and dismissive to be included. Could have said something like ‘I see everything, I know all your secrets, and some of you may well end up in the “custodial arts” someday if you’re not careful.’

I like the idea of including a similar extended scene, but one more cautionary and relatable and less aggressive and insulting. I wish they would add all the deleted scenes and put in in the theater again because I would watch it over and over. This is by far the best. If there was anymore deleted scenes to this (which I heard there was) I wish to see them as well. But damn, this was amazing and here I'm thinking it had only one deleted scene. When Allison walks in feet of Vernon and gives him the finger (I didn't even know she flipped him). Thank you Ziggy.

    • @holiday197
      @holiday197 2 года назад +12

There are several other deleted scenes that we haven't seen including a dream sequence where Allison dreams what each of the five characters would be like internally. Bender would be a prisoner, Andy as a viking, Brian as an astronaut, Claire as a bride and herself as a vampire. There are photos of some of the actors dressed in these costumes.
In the group therapy scene, Allison apparently demonstrates that she can write with her toes and this is filmed.
Another scene involves Bender, Brian and Andy in the Mens Bathroom just as it showed Claire and Allison in the Ladies Bathroom. Brian goes in a stall to pee and Bender says that he is gay if he pees in a stall (standing up). Then Brian goes to sit down and Bender says that he is a woman if he sits down to pee (inside the stall). Bender convinces Andy to go along with his taunts at Brian. Then when Bender and Andy are leaving, Brian uses the urinal. Vernon opens the Mens Bathroom door to see what is taking Brian so long and it infers that Vernon startles Brian. I can see why this scene was removed.
Allison signs a song to herself as she sits in a small room while the rest of the gang smoke marijuana (apparently the performance affected some of the crew emotionally). I believe that this footage may be shown in a trailer and/or in a documentary about the movie.
There's also a kiss scene between Bender and Claire in the closet which is also seen in a trailer.
And finally there are two additional ending scenes that were removed. The first scene shows Bender continuing to walk along the streets as Simple Minds 'Don't You Forget About Me' continues to play. Bender jumps up and hits a street sign while he walks home. And the second ending scene is believed to have shown the five students on Monday while they are in their groups/cliques in the hallway. They exchange nods with one another but leave it unknown if they make the attempt to actually talk to one another.
I really wish these scenes will eventually see the light of day!

I remember reading about that. It was "My Life" by Phil Ochs.
A couple of scenes always bothered me. I always felt the scene with Vernon giving Bender more detention deserved better dialogue.
      Vernon: "Are you through?"
      Bender: "No."
Vernon: "I'm doing society a favor."
Bender: "Bullshit, you're doing yourself a favor."
The actual dialogue just made him seem like another dumb burnout who thought he was tough.
Also, I thought that by the end, once the kids realized that it was the parents and school structure that was making their lives so miserable, they should've all banded together and beat the living shit out of the Principal.

I hope that the full Directors Cut is released someday as there are still some scenes missing. There’s a scene where Allison dreams what each of them feel like internally with her as a vampire, Claire as a bride, Bender as a prisoner, Brian as an astronaut and Andrew as a viking. There are photos around of what the scene looked like with Brian, Andrew and Allison in costume.
There is also a scene in the Mens Bathroom with Bender, Andrew and Brian although it seems like it might be homophobic (I have read it in the original script).
Apparently there are also two additional ending scenes. One scene is an extension of Bender walking home along the street as Simple Minds ‘Don’t You Forget About Me’ continues to play and he jumps up and hits a street sign along the way. And the other scene apparently shows the five of them on Monday morning where they are around the other students. They each nod to each other in their groups but leave it up in the air if any of them make an effort to go up and talk to each other.
I believe John Hughes’ wife had the copy before she had passed away so their sons may have the copy. If so, I really hope they release it someday.

Like the bathroom scenes (although I understand why those were cut) did drag the pacing a bit. The extended Carl scene though, was TOTALLY AWESOME!!!! Hughes should have left that in. I always felt like Carl had something to say about each of them. John Kapelos was SO FUNNY! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Ally Sheedy marauding the locker and flipping Vernon off were both funny too (I would have cut the locker marauding scene myself and left her flipping the bird to Vernon instead. The "Smegma Toast!" 📚 sliding around scene was TOTALLY CLASSIC in it's entirety though! Should DEFINITELY have been kept in! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I'm glad they drastically toned down the janitors monolog ... It was far too bleak and morose to be telling a bunch of high school kids that their lives are meaningless ... grown ups don't have the right to tell kids who they are or what their life is going to be ... that point was made pretty clear with the paper they all wrote at the close of the actual movie.

I think it would have made the ending even stronger. Since it shows how carl was a student like them who wanted to become somebody but eventually became a nobody, the ending kept same with essay reading would have meant 'fu** you' to his words, basically saying 'you don't get choose who we become, we ourselves do'.
Also a little more depth to vernon would have been better if the scene with carl in basement when they were talking was a bit longer and he recounts how he was like one of them, the kids until he got punched by his life and became jaded and cynic, no fun.
Ebert did say in his review that vernon felt 'one dimensional'. I think that scene being a bit longer would have been fine.

Yet there he, not being the king anymore. Carl's comments aimed at both Andy and Claire are easily reminders of how high school popularity ends. Then comes adulthood. High school success, or any school success doesn't guarentee success in life. The message of the scene is enjoy your high school years, because it is truly your last chance to be carefree. Like I’m sitting here doing my thing with this on next to me as if it was the movie, which if these were only the deleted scenes they wouldn’t have the setup included that allows for it to feel like scenes playing at a movie rate rather than a DVD extra rate. Whoever doesn’t agree is Smegma Toast! (A new classic that this gold has added into the house of gold)

There’s a part of me that would love to see a sequel of this; and I think John Hughes was even working on one, but the original is just such a perfect presentation of the zeitgeist, I’d hate to see it tarnished by a subpar follow up. I mean, as much as I love the Matrix series, the subsequent entries didn’t really live up to the polished story of the original.

The janitor predicting their future is too dark for a dramedy like this….the kids have all the power in this film and that scene would take that power away.

They should have kept in the scene with Brian and Claire acting out their families, the books scene, Alison at the locker with Andy, it added to their characters in a cool way. The janitor scene idk I mean it was cruel but ironic and hilarious but not necessary. All these deleted scenes added more humour even to Vernon. Brian and Claire deserved more character scenes and at least them talking about their families added some power to their otherwise quite passive characters. Brian's squeals at the end lol hilarious 25:20

I was 13 in the spring of 1987 and at the end of my 8th grade year. My family didn't have money to go anywhere for spring break. I spent the whole week watching and re-watching this movie on VHS.

i think they should've kept the scene when the janitor was scolding them, it shows that other people precise them and truly show what type of persona each person is, especially fits the themes of each person fitting into one category.

They should release an extended cut for the 40th anniversary in 2025. With all these deleted scenes incorporated- at least, the ones that make sense, like Allison picking the lock, I've been wondering what she did with that knife, and it's a nice piece of continuity

I would love to see this movie rereleased in theaters with all these deleted scenes in it. I know I friggin lost it when when Judd Nealson did the “Lucy, you have some splaining to do!” bit from “I love Lucy”

I always wonder how Carl the janitor ended back at that school as the janitor. At the start of the film you see a picture of him in the glass cabinet. I think it says student of the year or honour roll.

i still cannot believe they have never released a version with al this bonus stuff. i remember for years back in the 90s and early 2000s being in tape trading groups where people were always looking for recordings of various broadcasts of the film from TV because cable networks would often include a few bonus scenes that were added to pad the running time because other scenes had to be taken out because they were not appropriate for tv or because they need it to fill a 2 hour time slot and even with commercials there are a few minutes to fill or whatever. so yeah there would be like famous airings where say Night Flights or TNT or some channel played the movie one time on such and such night in 88 or something, and that one single time would be the only time the film had ever aired with a certain deleted scene added. then there is another cut that aired n some other channel one single time that had a different deleted scene that had never aired anywhere else. so people in the tape trading community and by tape i mean VHS, would always bee seeking different copies for different scenes this is mostly before the internet became common place. but still i have fond memories of those days and sending each other trading lists, and yeah like i said after all the time i cannot believe they still have never released a version with all these deleted bonus scenes.

i fucked around all through high school. i was so far behind i bailed mid way through senior year. i spent 2 years fucking around, going no where. my life was headed the same direction Carl warned them all about.
what saved me is i met the right girl who was way better than i was. she liked me enough to put up with my bullshit until i got my shit straight. now i work for myself, i own my own home, i have 2 teenagers, one of them straight A student, i have a nice car and i live a nice upper middle class life. if there's 100 different ways my life could have gone...I binked 1 of the 3 total possibles that turned out good.
