The Breakfast Club - Deleted Scenes (Part 2)

  • This is the second half of deleted scenes included with the Criterion Bluray. I split it in half due to copyright reasons.
Also just to be clear I didn't put ads on this, Universal did. Honestly, I'm just grateful they're letting me share it at all. The only way you can get these is from the Bluray.
To the people claiming that these scenes aren't deleted, let me explain. There are definitely deleted scenes here, but there are also alternative takes of scenes that would later be included. Also, later airings of the film on television would include previously deleted agents because of contractual and program blocking reasons. These scenes come directly from the Criterion Bluray, listed as deleted. They are sourced from worn workprint tapes from MCA, and likely have been trimmed down from likely full cuts of the film. I have not touched this at all from the source on the bluray.
To all people who have mentioned the later releases being censored, this is completely false. No home release of The Breakfast Club had scenes removed. Some broadcasts of the film have, however, had scenes removed either due to public television standards or, again, the programming schedule.
If you remember a deleted scene being in the movie, you very likely saw it on television.

Awwwe. When Claire gave Allison that hug, that’s the sweetest scene in this film. They should’ve kept it in. You could just feel Allison’s fear in letting someone in, and you could just see it on her face, “Wow,,,someone cares. They really care...”

Bender is a much deeper person than his persona would suggest. There is no question he has an odd admiration for Carl the Janitor. Every time they interact, both in the movie and in the deleted scenes, he's very focused on him, smiling, listening, very much in tune with Carl's blunt honesty. While Carl's profanity-laced, overly long deleted "how do you become a janitor" scene didn't lose much in being cut, the one thing it did lose was that while Bender was initially trying to fuck with him, it showed that Bender actually could see himself becoming Carl--not the janitor, but a person who could drop the persona and go through life totally comfortable in his own skin. Carl is incredibly confident and comfortable with himself even given his mistakes, while Bender is a scared little boy hidden beneath a tough guy attitude (as shown in his description of his home life and his staredown with Vernon in the closet when Vernon tells him to take a swing).

I had a teacher, a head of house, who was basically the sort of teacher Vernon is a caricature of. He once told my class, because we misbehaved in form time, that respect isn’t earned by teachers but automatic and expected, and he made eye contact with me directly for most of it because my form tutor and I had a ‘clash of personalities.’ He probably thought we were getting worse every year, and that we needed putting back into line. He and Vernon though didn’t realise that even if respect is automatic, you have to give respect to keep it, let alone earn it. The lack of respect those kinds of teacher show is always the most frustrating, as a bit of introspection would show them that, actually, they’re the ones pushing the kids away and preventing them from trusting those meant to help them at such a vulnerable time in their lives. If they learned that, they’d stop being hated and actually get the respect they need to feel adequate.

In all of my original comments l said that l was fine with all of these scenes being deleted but on reflection l think it was a mistake to cut the very short scene where Paul Gleason is fighting with the soda machine and Ally stands there just out of his peripheral vision, mocking him and giving him the finger.
All it would have taken for her to get busted was for him to just look over
This would have been a really great scene to leave in because she does not do this out of bravery, but to illustrate to the other kids that she really is 'invisible'. A very short scene that would have added an awful lot to the film.

Fun facts for those who don’t know much about the movie’s background. Ronald Reagan was the first choice to play Vernon, but a meeting with Mikhail Gorbachev conflicted with the shooting schedule and he could not accept the role. In Reagan’s autobiography, An American Life, he calls this “The biggest regret of my life.” Harvey Keitel was the next pick, but after reading the script he told John Hughes that he’d only play the role if he could dress in the same clothes he wore in “Taxi Driver.” So Paul Gleason, son of Jackie Gleason, won the role. During shooting he improvised the movie’s most famous line, “Yo Sal, how come there ain’t no brothers up on the wall?” The role Anthony Michael Hall played was originally written for a chimpanzee. Eric Stolz was originally cast as Bender, then halfway through filming John Hughes realized he wasn’t menacing enough and fired him. But you can still see glimpses of Stolz in the movie. That is his head between Molly Ringwald’s knees. And Hughes wanted Justine Bateman as the Claire character, but Gary David Goldberg would not give her the time off needed to film the movie. Filming was delayed for six months because of a typhoon. Emilio Estevez suffered a heart attack right before shooting began, also delaying the shooting schedule. The five students were originally supposed to serve their detention in the school cafeteria, locked into the walk-in refrigerator, but then producers were worried that children would try to copy the movie and lock themselves into their refrigerators at home, then suffocate. The exterior scenes were shot at a suburban high school right outside of Chicago, but the library scenes were filmed at the Princeton University library, which is mostly underground and that’s why you see no windows in the movie’s library. Harvard University refused permission to film the dance scene there, so it was done at Oxford in England. Judd Nelson went undercover as a high school student at a local high school because seven years after graduating from a high school in Maine he had no memory of what high school was like, and found he liked it so much that he stayed at that high school after filming and four years later graduated as their Valedictorian. No one at that school ever realized he was an actor and not a student, even though he had been in three movies before “The Breakfast Club.”

I recently read that people didn't like the maker over scene. I thought it was just Claire trying to share something with Alison. I doubt that she changed overnight and went back to school on Monday wearing makeup and dresses. As for Claire and Bender I think she gave him one of her diamond earrings as a "keep sake". Same goes for Andy and Alison, again, I doubt the two walked the halls on Monday holding hands. Which is why she wouldn't give back his hoodie and ripped off a patch from his jacket.
