    To understand how much protein you really need to stay healthy or prevent chronic disease, you might want to figure out how your body digests and absorbs protein.
    In recent years, protein has become a buzzword in the health and fitness industry, with many people believing that the more protein they consume, the better.
    Sure, protein fills you up. It also helps you build and maintain muscle, which helps prevent weakness, falls, and other health concerns related to aging. Studies also show that high-protein diets can help you lose weight - think about the Atkins Diet. But such short-term result is nothing compared to the high saturated fat and high calories in high-protein foods that increase the risk of heart disease and obesity.
    Protein is an important nutrient for our bodies. But focusing too much on this macro can skew our understanding of what a balanced diet should look like.
    Here's Cyrus for a discussion that might help you stop obsessing over protein.

    I had a miraculous transformation of my health by going low-fat whole food plant-based. Formerly I was slightly overweight. And my arthritis was getting so bad that I couldn't open my hand out of the fist in the morning. I had trouble lifting my leg to get off my bike and going to the gym because my hips hurt so bad. Also had painful bunions. This diet completely removed ALL those problems for me and I lost 20 lb eating constantly 😂. Losing arthritic pain gave me the ability to workout, which improved my health in other ways. It was a domino effect of wonderfulness! Look around because there's a lot of people like me now. I take care of a 78-year old diabetic. She's getting better now too because of this diet. Cyrus is doing an incredible public service and he tells the truth! LISTEN.

    I would love to listen to a conversation between Cyrus and Benjamin Bikman exploring their understanding of reversing insulin resistance. Both are engaging and respectful speakers with polar opposite approaches. It seems that there's science to support both plant based low fat and keto/low carb diets with animal protein. Surely they could take a deep dive together to clear up some of the conflicting ideas around reducing insulin and managing blood glucose. It gets confusing when experts have conflicting ideas especially around protein and fat.

  • @11235Aodh
    @11235Aodh Год назад +2

    This aligns exactly with what drs. John Mc. Dougall and Peter Rogers say about protein. Dr. Rogers often explains how fat inhibits proton pump 3 of the mitochondria making it drop a superoxyde. Love this lecture, i hadn't learned about the animal proteins making glucagon and this also raises the blood sugar (and insulin release) in non diabetics.

    This video is for people with type I diabetes who decided to still eat carbs. I think the situation with dietary protein and fats described in research from this video could be different when deducting the carbs from the equation, that is why low-carb or non-carb diets work. I am prediabetic, on breakfast today I had 2 eggs, 1 tsp of fat with some sausage no carbs, and coffee with a small splash of full milk, and after 3 hours my blood glucose fell from 108 to 102. So despite having some protein for breakfast, my BG didn't raise and this is in this way day after day. However, if I eat a fat-protein lunch and then allow myself some high-carb treats, indeed, I get a spike in BG after 3 or more hours afterward. Isn't it an argument in favor of low-carb diets?

Recently I viewed a YT video by William Y. Shang M.D. He has some interesting things to say about insulin resistance and exercise. He makes a distinction between aerobic and anaerobic exercise. His point is that older people do not get enough anaerobic exercise such as resistance weight training and what anaerobic exercise can do to fight diabetes. He has a book about this.

    Other thoughts 💭: as a young high level athlete (decades ago thus!) we were put on high protein and fat and super low carbs (don’t even think complex carbohydrates!) diets, we also trained very very aggressively….And experienced lots of stress (I did!) later on with cancer I study a bit ….and it looks like cell metabolism is highly disturbed right, with all you teach, and seeing how it influences also vascular and heart diseases I can’t but think that it must play multiple roles also with the rise of cancer and other diseases!
    Aren’t we all after all ticking bombs 💣 if we do not fuel ⛽️ our bodies with what they really need as we will all (except some lucky 🍀 outliers) develop depending on our genetic some sickness!

    The increased insulin requirements from things like healthy fats is not a long term health risk gactor. As we see in many studies, replacing carbohydrates with fats from foods like nuts seeds and avocado do not see negative health mortality or disease risk. Focusing only on something like insulin requirements is unwise. 10% calories from fat is low probably going to do more harm than good. 15-30% is less extreme.

    What I've come to is, anywhere from 1.5 to 1.8 grams of protien per kilo bodyweight if u are not overweight; if u are just do gram per cm height. Take all of it in 1 low carb decently high protien meal before 12 in the day.
    Edit : this is for non diabetics/ type 2 diabetics. I have nothing but pity and sympathy for type 1 diabetics

    • @megajatt123
      @megajatt123 Год назад

      @James Rodriguez lifters should do the lifting in the morning, after having eaten a bowl of white rice or semolina porridge, lets say 70-80 grams of cooked product. The carrbs will give the body immediate fuel for explosive action and get burned off during the workout. Also i suggest going to 2.5grams per kilo of bodyweight.

    I would say just use common sense. Start slowly increasing your carb content with plant-based foods. Start with the greens. Spinach salads with tomatoes and cucumbers and colored peppers if you like that. Stay away from grains and whole wheat at first and gradually introduce these things. Also I would suggest beans but they have a gas effect on some people. Just take it slow.

      Our microbiome makes short chain fatty acids from the indigestible fibres we eat and we can make all the cholesterol and saturated fat we need in our own bodies. There is enough fat in plant based foods, like oats is around 10% fat, these are all the good fats we need (source dr. J. McDougall and dr. Peter Rogers).

      There are two essential fatty acids we need from food: Omega-3 alphalinoleic acid (ALA) and Omega-6 linolenic acid (LA). 1 TBS of flax seeds and 1 TBS of walnuts is enough to get both.

    I was an ovo-lacto vegetarian for 30 yrs. I took supplements and was always seeking out protien rich foods, but almost annually I'd find out how anemic I was. Dr Berg says red meat is much better absorbed than plant sources...so I'm trying it out.

    • @soilikasanen
      @soilikasanen Год назад

      Lacto-ovo vegetarians are at highest risk of iron deficiency anemia because dairy (like coffee and tea) inhibits iron absorption. Human body can regulate the intake of plant derived iron which isn't inflammatory as heme iron is. Check out how much there's iron in chickpeas and cow flesh.

    • @soilikasanen
      @soilikasanen Год назад +1

      There's a difference between animal protein and plant protein. The protein % is moderate since the amount of good carbs is high - for example 110 g of protein versus over 600 grams of carbs.

    • @ultmiddle4991
      @ultmiddle4991 Год назад

      In addition to the comparison of protein grams to carbohydrate grams, confusion may dissipate if a person differentiates between DENSE protein foods vs LOW DENSE protein foods. Eating dense protein in a small amount can jive perfectly in a LOW protein daily diet.
