Decades ago children spent time on bicycles, climbing trees, neighborhood baseball games etc. and Moms provided sugary treats mostly as a Sunday treat and cake was for birthdays. Today it's less outdoor simple activities, treats and cake/doughnuts are a daily occurance .

I’ve been plant-based for several weeks and I am seeing improvements in blood glucose for sure. I’ve gone from full-blown type 2 to pre-diabetes levels. I’ve even had fasting as low as 105 which hasn’t happened to me in the 2+ years since my diagnosis. But I’m not losing weight. I did in the first few days but now I’m stuck. I’m eating almost entirely low-fat, plant-based Whole Foods. Very little processed food. I’m eating under 1,400 calories per day according to my tracker.
I don’t know how I could eat enough to stay full and still lose weight. I ride my exercise bike for an hour or two and only burn 300-500 calories each time. That’s one more can of beans which still won’t keep me full. It’s frustrating. I’m eating huge salads, fry stir fried veggies, sweet potatoes, whole grains like steel cut oats, brown rice, and non-pearled barley, fruit, and a minimal amount of processed vegan foods like meat alternatives.

You might want to consider reverse dieting. And prioritize protein. I would also recommend weight training and little or no cardio except walking. If you are biking slow you should be OK. Your description sounds exactly what I went through! I have since learned that I have to eat more to recalibrate my BMR upward and build muscle to increase my capacity for thermogenesis. Calories do count but I think you might be in too much of a calorie deficit. If you go too low your body down regulates your metabolism because it senses it is in stress.

@ that makes sense. It seems like what I’ve been going through. I took a week to eat more calories and then went back to a deficit and now I’ve lost 2 pounds. I definitely do need to exercise more. I live in a dangerous neighborhood and have very little room indoors but I do have resistance bands and I can pace around the room.

@@tarabooartarmy3654 that sounds exactly like the concept of mini-bulk and mini cut. Bodybuilders have been doing it for years! While I don’t embrace the entire lifestyle which systematically buys the body under enormous stress I do see that they can manipulate their bodies quite fluidly on the scales. I do agree with cycling calories. Congratulations on breaking your plateau! Patience is everything! I used to be ruled by the number on the scale but when I got one of those scales that told me “everything”. It really helped me to understand if I was gaining muscle, fat or water. Then I did not beat up myself so much and I was OK losing a 1lb a week. What I did consistently was HEAVY weight training, eat at maintenance and if I incorporated a 10K a day walk I think I would do so much better. But losing 1 lb a week working out only 2x a week eating more than I ever did is better than gaining 5 lbs a year barely eating anything. I also had to start tracking to keep me accountable. That’s when I learned I ate waaaaaaay too much fat and not enough protein.

Pacing the room is considered non-exercise activity thermogenesis NEAT and is incredibly effective if you can believe it

I was a food sponsor for the Santa Cruz Sentinel Triathlon for 8 years. Funds was for schools. I fed all 1200 participants. I feed them fig bars. Disgracefully, I was eating my sausages and hash brown potatoes while the athletes dives unto the freezing ocean water. When i became vegan, I stayed overweight eating all the vegan processed veggie burger. I t very hard to keep fatty food away !!! I ate more fresh veggie when I had rescued rabbits, my rescued cattle had none.

Microbiome food. You lose up to 30% calories to your microbiome if you feed on fiber rich foods. Dr. R. Lustig (Pediatric Endocrinologist) talks about it in his seminars found on you tube as well. 🙂👍

      Happy to help, Kevin!
If you have severe insulin resistance or struggle with fluctuating blood glucose, we recommend earning your ability to eat fruits high on the glycemic index by eating a diet containing as much low glycemic plant material as possible for a few weeks first.
Once you have gained a significant amount of insulin sensitivity, then begin increasing your intake of higher glycemic fruits and your blood glucose is unlikely to spike in the post-meal state.

I’ve found my sugar doesn’t spike with fruit as long as I’m only eating fruit alone or as part of a salad. If I try to eat fruit with other carbs, like rice or potatoes, my sugar will spike.

Carbs are not bad.. processed carbs are bad.. However, I ate all the green light foods for years and I gained weight and got sicker and sicker.. the beans legumes made me so fat! I was very plant based and didn’t eat a lot of meat.. I stayed hungry! I feel so much better eating red meats, cold water fish, and chicken, and 3-6 cups of vegetables. I eat no grains no beans no legumes. I lost 30 pounds and feel sooooo much better.. my triglycerides dropped to 40 and my blood work is amazing… plant based doesn’t work for me! I was always hunger and bloated.. bloating has no effect on stretch receptors. The fat and protein from meat finally satiated me!! It also triggered leptin and my stretch receptors. Fiber from the beans legumes and grains made me bloated from bulk did not stop my hunger.. I now eat a 3-6 cups of cruciferous vegetable today with fatty red meat and fatty chicken meats and 3-6 eggs daily makes me feel good! Meat is available year round plants are seasonal fruits are seasonal. What would you eat in the dead of winter? Answer-Fat and protein from an animal. I have been eating this way for 10 years and I’m not constantly hungry and poop twice a day and when I poop I empty!
Get off processed foods avoid seed oils chemicals and grains. Grains in the US are full of glyphosate and toxins.. also whole grains raise blood sugar in an insulin resistant body. Fiber did not work for me.. I do not eat processed meats..

I also had high triglycerides and thyroid disease and celiac from eating grains.. once I got off the grains I lost weight and my blood work markers got better.. plant based is not good.. balanced meal with meat and plants works the best.. grains are loaded with toxins!

you had what called the bacteria that in Fodmap, unable to digest, fiber like apple PECTIN, inulin, oligosaccharide. beta glucan (very powerful in boosting natural killer cells to kill cancer cells).. they cause methane gas, hydrogen suflide gas. You did not have good bacteria that feeds on soluble fiber, which creates butyrate which builds STRONG immune, increase gut mucosa layer.. ttoo bad for you.

Ive been following your advice for 2 weeks and my a1c is now 4.4. This high fibre plant based food has definitely worked for me. Previously I did a low carb diet which made me lose weight but my blood suger was up and down. Now with your diet my blood sugar is very stable, so im glad i found you on here. Thanks to your great advice ive now cracked my diabetes.I cant exercise because im disabled so i have to address my diabetes with diet alone. Its definitely a plant based diet for me now forever, thanks again

Happy to see you recognize how the body is able to regulate under and over consumption of nutrition as long as I’m my humble opinion, you eat real food. I haven’t had any fiber in over 4 years. I happen to eat one meal per day and will be sure to report back if I start to get hungry more than once per day. So far I eat pretty much the same amount of food everyday, consume the same amount or water and haven’t had any hiccups to speak of. Beauty of life, people have the freedom choose what they like to eat. Hopefully their. Hooch allows them to live their best life.

If you go into ketosis for every 2 carbons of fat burned in the absence of carbohydrate, 2 carbons are turned to ketones. My favorite way to get there is a mid afternoon walk 15 to 30 minutes followed by chewing a hand full of flaxseed (about 1 1/2 teaspoons, must be chewed well). The omega 3 fats and ligans do wonders. This doubles the rate of fat loss as does fasting. Not sure if type I diabetics can do this but OK for type II diabetics and normal people.
Also calorie in/out doesn't apply to foods you don't digest, but that really only applies to malabsorpion or not having the right microbiome for second meal effect. Calorie in/2x out while in ketosis. I do not do keto diet, just eat a balance of starchy and non-starchy vegetables and burn off the glucose in the blood when you might normally have a snack by going for a walk and a flaxseed snack.
