As a family doctor in Southern California, this podcast did blow my mind, has changed the way I think about diet for my diabetic patients, and will change the way I practice medicine. As an aside, I found out my wife went to school with Cyrus, and said he was always the nicest guy. Small world.

Someone should teach these things at schools bc I'm insulin resistant and my doc (no more), after normal blood tests, and ct told me I'm fine. No special blood tests. Nothing. I had to find out on RUclips from docs who treating these things and I started keto month ago but I think gonna change it to this. I really believe it.

I've been Type 2 since 2011. I was told by every doctor to eat meat, dairy and eggs every day because they had very little carb and high fat will slow any carb. My A1c always came back in the high 8's and 9's. On March 4th this year, my A1c came back at 8.3. I had enough of insulin and meds and decided to go vegan. By August, my A1c dropped to 5.9 - prediabetic level, and I did that eatibg veggie burgers and vegan junk food everyday. Now I am WFPB and oil free. I have another test scheduled for December and I'm hoping that will be under 5.6, which will mean it's reversed and I won't have to pay for insulin anymore. Fingers crossed.

Wow! Very encouraging to hear stories like this. I'm also T2D and trying to stick closely to a WFPB diet. Oil is added to almost everything but I'm gradually moving away from oil more and more. Please post an update in December! I also cannot wait for my 3-month metabolic panel test. On my last test everything was normal except for A1C.

He only eats meat and cheese and still couldn't keep it under control. Any way after only 9 days his blood sugar is coming down! He now even has some control over it with exercise! Before, even exercising vigorously wouldn't bring it down. Before his blood sugar was always around 250-300, even first thing in the morning. After one week of cutting out the fat and eating wholesome carbohydrates he saw his blood sugar hit 125! This is incredible! He is literally blown away by these findings! Brilliant! Rich, I'm so grateful to you for letting Cyrus explain that process through to completion without interrupting him. I'm the kind of person who wants to know WHY. WHY are you telling me to keep dietary fats low? Oh, okay, now I'm armed with the knowledge and understanding which helps me to embody and live and adopt these recommendations. Just like it helps when people like Dr. Goldhamer and Dr. Barnard explain what constitutes healthy fats versus unhealthy fats. you don't need carbs or fruit. nutrient requirements change on lower carb diets. your abortion rate also increases, which means you get adequate mineral levels. meat has the same vitamins you can get from fruit, to prevent scurvy.
the reason pirates got scurvy is cause they were eating dried meat(with deteriorated mineral/vitamin content) and biscuits(which are high in carbs). they were not on low-carb diets at all. so don't listen to anyone who talks about pirates and scurvy.

I love the internet because you can find out anything you want to, it's fascinating and sucks all at the same time because depending on where you live you adopt what you've always been told. (More so when we didn't have the internet) I live in a world of confusion because honestly I don't know who to trust anymore, it's almost like you loose part of your identity, nothing is as solid anymore. @@punker4Real "He is telling everyone the wrong information I know people that actually have diabetic IRL their bIood sugar skyrockets 🚀 to the moon when eating plant sludge.... This is verified with a glucose meter.."
Thanks for your reply. I'm a PhD university professor and researcher, and part of what I study and teach about is nutrition--and how people get fooled about it. Notice that you are talking about "plant sludge," by which I assume you mean processed foods, but HE is talking about whole plant foods. Eating WHOLE plant foods (intact grains, legumes, veggies, fruit, some nuts & seeds) is super healthy and ALL large, slim, and almost-totally diabetes-free populations in recent history got the majority or vast majority of their calories from whole food carbs (plant foods). There are no exceptions to that--AND experimental studies prove saturated fat causes insulin resistance, you can cure insulin resistance and get glucose levels under control eating diets that have 70+% of calories from whole food carbs. That means eating natural "carbs" is not the villain--eating too much fat that creates insulin resistance and then eating junk food carbs and excess calories is the villain here.
All a glucose meter is telling you is "Yes, I have impaired my body's ability to process whole food carbs normally by FIRST eating too much fat and junk foods." The banana isn't the culprit--those high glucose readings are only a sign you've messed up your system.
Diabetes is a multi-step process, and as this video explains in detail, the first step is eating too much fat and getting a build-up of fat inside muscle cells. Start at the 56 minute mark and he very clearly explains that.
Of course you can lose weight and get glucose under control by eating lots of meat and animal fat and cutting out the carbs, but you are just dodging the fact your body has been impaired, and ...
      a) you STILL have insulin resistance and carb intolerance (demonstrated by your inability to rapidly metabolize the glucose in a banana and a couple of slices of bread),
      b) if you DO eat any significant amount of carbs--a normal human thing to do--the resulting spike in glucose levels damages your endothelium, and
      c) diets high in meat and animal fat cause more disease in the long run, from heart disease and all its spin-offs to cancers and neurological diseases.
What Cyrus is teaching about here is the method of actual curing all facets of diabetes AND eating the diet the provides the best overall long-term health. The research clearly shows that the best overall long-term health outcomes result from eating diets that are very low in fat and dominated by whole plant foods.
      Take care.

Also I boiled water with cinamon, green teas, ginsang, mulbery leafs, bitter melons, jujubes, other herbs and kept drinking it. Then, when I go back to the doctor, Ab1c was drpped to 5.3 and all kinds of cholesterol got within normal range. By the way, I was taking Metformin 500 mg once a day. Many people don't know that hypoglycemia can eventually turn into type 2 diabetes. I am currently morphing from being very hypoglycemic years ago to diabetic, but I'm putting up a fight. My numbers are mostly pre-diabetic now. But, in my family line, those who've eaten bad diets ended up on insulin a decade younger than I am now.

    • @lisaadams780
      @lisaadams780 Год назад +2

Yes, as a young person in my 20’s I also began struggling with hypoglycemia. No doctor actually told me then that this was a major problem that would lead to diabetes later in life. I was only told not to wait too long to eat between meals because my blood sugar would drop. Eat something sugary real quick to get my blood sugar back up. It often made me sick for the rest of the day. Then in my 30’s pregnant with my daughter, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes and told I would likely become type 2 diabetic later because of the now gestational diabetes diagnosis. Well by the time I was going through menopause symptoms I was also diagnosed with diabetes. I was in my late 40’s. Doctors has 3 decades to teach me about diet and how to change what was going on in my body so that I never became a diabetic despite hypoglycemia and gestational diabetes. They just let it take it’s course and then ordered me into dietary classes and classes about diabetes. Learning how I got there. I was thinking wow, why didn’t the doctors put me in these classes when I was in my 20’s, 30’s and 40’s. They knew I was spiraling out of control because of my American diet and they all just let it happen so that some doctor later would have me as diabetic patient seeing them every three to six months for the rest of my life. Pathetic to say the least! Where am I now? I was able to bring my A1C down to 5.6 two years ago with Ozempic. I had already lost 30 lbs years before and had A1C numbers below 7. I stopped taking Ozempic because of a side affect related to the pancreas if a person has something wrong with it. I have a benign cyst on my pancreas and do not want Ozempic to cause inflammation there. So my numbers are back up again though I’m working out 5 days a week. It is my diet 100% because I have rigorous classes including swimming and walking. Can we please get the truth behind what we are eating. This all starts from the time a baby begins eating table food. I wish I knew when I was having my children. Now I’m trying to get them to read about diabetes and listen to videos like this. I feel like it takes a lifetime for people to listen and learn and make drastic changes.

Great conversation! So awesome that now there are young doctors promoting and clarifying the whole food plant based lifestyle and its benefits.
I have experienced myself what they are talking about. I changed my diet from eating 'everything' to vegan, and strictly fruitarian for three years (now I eat whole food vegan low fat), and my life changed radically.
I haven't been so healthy in my life, and still going strong at 44.
In my family's hystory has type 2 diabetes, but I didn't got sick nor needed a doctor since 11 years.
Fruitarian diet is superior in my experience, but socially is not easy, you need to eat a lot of fruits, and you become more sensible to the quality of them, and the imported ones or not ripe ones won't sadisfy you enough.
My family and peers weren't so supportive at first, they resisted the new data I was bringing in the family, in Italy we were 10 pp exploring fruitarianism, there were not doctors supporting us, and mainly we got laughted after. But we were shining, like this two guys here, and that is the evidence noone can deny.

I've been doing animal based keto for a couple years, with high carb days sprinkled in. I listen to a lot of low-carb info / promotion, and I like to also listen to opposing views. This channel is a great resource. I've added these guys' book to my reading list. It's interesting how "both sides" have studies and anecdotes to support their recommendations. I'm much more interested in the mechanistic side of things, but overall outcomes i.e. healthspan must be considered also. I wish the discussion on keto would have gotten more technical, since it wasn't even mentioned that ketones are a source of fuel and also act as hormones, and that fats can also be used by many cells directly as fuel. It paints the overall discussion with a heavy slant. Hopefully the book goes into more detail. I like how Rich often brings up the opposing view (in this case, keto) but I can't tell why he's so often satisfied with a shallow exploration and then just moves on. It doesn't seem to be deliberate, but more like confirmation bias. We're only human, though.

Now i am definitely confused :(
Just watched a bunch of podcasts telling me how low carb/keto is gonna help with my auto immune desease, how its gonna make me live longer and generally healthier, because we are (evolutionary speaking) not used to eating that many carbs. And they also tell what eating lots of carbs is gonna cause like alzheimers and how ketogenic is showing improvements with alzheimer's and it made kinda sense that ketones are good for your brain( a neuro surgeon talked about that topic).
And than are these guys who just tell the complete opposite and also back it up with "science" just like the other people did :/

The problem becomes when you combine high carb processed foods/oils with sugar. Isn't that the typical american diet which is causing all the health problems? Remove the processed foods/oils and eat a high carb whole foods/veggies diet and it might be ok.........for how long depends on the individual. Be aware that only 20% of the population will do fine on a high carb diet. Or, drop all the processed foods/oils and do a very LCHF (animal based fats) diet and you'll do excellent, that is, if you're not one of those who do best on a HCLF diet.

@@CarschA There is no evidence at all that low carb diets based on animal origin foods are better than SAD based on junk foods. In fact the epidemiological evidence says the opposite. I was a believer in low diets for two decades, but only lost a significant amount of weight the first time. The following times they were disappointing as I ended up stalling pretty soon and I believe they just made me insulin resistant. Nine years ago I went plant-based and lost more than 30 pounds. unfortunately during a period of high stress I fell off the wagon and begsn eating lots of junk food , and even though I stopped that I later added cheese back. I also started eating fish, mostly oily canned fish, and I ended up with T2D.
Remembering what Dr. Neil, Bernard had said, I finally decided to go back to eating totally Plant based and eliminate added oils, at least as much as possible (I love natural peanut butter but I pour off a lot of the oil). I couldn’t quit “cold turkey” so only very recently I became plant-based again but I feel very motivated and hopeful.

Cyrus commented that 90 percent of doctors are not trained in diet. I would add that the remaining doctors who are trained in diet , about 90 percent of those doctors are trained to advocate an improper diet. This is even more true for registered dietitians. There are, relatively, very few Dr. McDougalls, Neil Barnards or Caldwell Esselstyns out there who know the actual truth about the positive results obtained by eating a plant based and low fat diet. A whole foods, plant based, low fat diet is good for you, not only for diabetes type 1, 2, and 1.5, but also for obesity, cardiovascular risk, stroke risk, and other common diseases seen in Western society. I went through Cyrus and Robby's entire course online and it really helped me a lot.

As I understand it, the reason you can eat so much fruit and not impact your glucose is because the sugar in fruit is fructose which is digested in the liver into fat, if glucose is not needed. The leafy green and non-starchy vegetables are low carb. If I eat grains, starchy vegetables or sugar my glucose levels rise significantly. I can’t handle that type of food. You are scary to me, many of us with type 1 diabetes are doing very well on low carb diets. I would be able to respect you if you would offer this as an option, not the only solution. Ki Rort - As a late 50's male Type 2 diabetic I most recently tried and stopped doing a totally WFPB diet CORRECTLY for 17 days, on day 17 my gums started to bleed a lot out of nowhere so I went into a dentist on a last-second emergency appointment and he asked me if I was vegan??? I was startled as like he was reading my mind, I told him yes for 17 days - he told me that this diet is doing this to me and other patients with the same and if I want to retain the remainder of my teeth I need to cease this diet immediately!!! He told me that the symptoms match low protein (even though I was eating so much lentils and beans for that) and that my body was begging for animal protein. Also I'll add that my fasting blood sugars were getting progressively worse last day at 181 and I was mostly feeling cold - not good!!!!! I did enjoy the foods and regret this didn't work for me, so I'm taking a step back to review if this diet is something I could possibly entertain doing in the future - otherwise, back to a keto-ish diet I go where I know my fasting blood sugars can be controlled, I feel like I'm in "food jail" and I don't want to take medications or insulin as the side effects will get me plus the high $ cost. I take 2 1000mg Cinnamon twice a day morning and evening and within 6 months my diabetes was gone. I stopped taking when doctor said I didn't have diabetes anymore and eventually my diabetes came back. I have started taking cinnamon again and my a1 c is going down again. So I have learned I can not stop taking the cinnamon. I have type 2 diabetes. What are your thoughts?

I think that the Intermittent fasting aspect of autophagy is what helps your body heal itself. Then you burn fat as ketones as fuel instead of carbohydrates. You also heal your gut microbiome. Keto is not high protein, but is actually lots of greens and fiber filled vegetables. Fruit that has fiber is ok but limited. As you heal your insulin resistance you can add more and more carbs. Sugar and processed foods of course are not in the diet due mostly because they affect our body in negative ways. Omega 6 fats are the kind of fats that cause the "fat issue". They are canola, soy, safflower, and other vegetable oils that cause the insulin resistance. We do need healthy fats that are Omega 3's and not vegetable oils. Most keto doctors do not encourage high animal proteins or fats. Instead the fats come from healthy omega 3 rich foods or oils. The idea is to first fix your gut bacteria and hormones so you are not craving food all day which causes weight gain and possibly metabolic issues. Most doctors also do not say to eat large portions of meat. The idea is for a person to release fat to be burned instead of carbohydrates. When you get healthy you can add carbs back. I like not craving food all day. If someone is not eating properly on the keto diet it will eventually show problems. Losing weight does not mean you are healthy. i do not think these two have really done their homework on what people experience on a healthy keto diet. I eat pretty much all kinds of healthy foods on the keto diet.

I love Cyrus and Robby not just because they are 100% right scientifically, but because they completely understand why people stick to low-carb diets. They don't do it because they are gluttons, or love bacon, or love hearing "good news about bad habits." They don't do it because they hate animals or the environment. They do it because 1) IT WORKS short-term and in fact improves all health measures - blood sugar, LDL, blood pressure and 2) They are LIED TO about WHY it works so they ruin their health long term. Robby totally nails it when he says, "They eat themselves into a state of insulin resistance and carb intolerance." This was me for years and years and I blamed myself for not sticking strictly enough to a low-carb diet because every bite of rice put on pounds overnight. I was sure the "natural" diet had to be mostly meat because anything else I just couldn't tolerate. I had CREATED insulin resistance with the low-carb high-fat diet that gave me the only way to lose weight I had knew of at that time. People need to know this, and they can't hear you if you're just telling them what gluttonous lazy bacon-loving liars they are. You have to say, "yeah, low-carb worked, this his HOW it worked short-term and this is WHY it made things so much worse long-term." Thanks so much you guys! The world needs you!

They are factually wrong about the biochemistry. They ignore the mechanism that increases adipocyte size. Insulin drives both fat and carbs into fat cells. The Western diet suffers from too many refined carbs driving glucose into fat cells where it is converted into triglycerides. Insulin also inhibits hormone sensitive lipase thereby blocking fat oxidation. Hence we get fat when we eat high carbs. Low glycemic carbs are your best bet...and I think that is what they are recommending.....but carbs also drive hunger and are not good for satiety.....cheat time! Fat + Carbs (any carbs) is a disaster.
