Here's what worked for me: Go to a car wash and pressure wash the flaking paint from all directions. MUCH EASIER than hand scraping.
Same issue on my chevy. Every panel.. Thanks GM.
Honda Toyota and Ford have the same problem. I figure it's DuPont or whoever supplies the paint...
There are so many GM's out there that LQQK like this I thought it was an option......every one should be fixed at GM's EXPENSE no matter what the age. It's 99.999999999999999999% white vehicles. Hoods, roofs, sides of doors. Some genuine advertising for a quality product.................
Yes i agree with you. After i got my van i started to notice most of the white vans that i saw were the same as mine.
My 2002 white tahoe looks exactly like this :/
same thing with my van! they used such a light coat of paint !
got this same problem on my 93 miata project car... for some reason mazda decided they didn’t need to use clear coat on their cars. i think i might use paint stripper on the whole car, then rust remover for the rust spots, then do sanding and paint.
I'm a Chevy guy but damn you GM.
Honda , Toyota and Ford has the same issue. I figure it's DuPont or whoever supplies the paint...
How was the color match with the Rust-oleum? Was there a specific Rust-oleum color of white that you use? I'm about to start a project with a truck I just bought last night, so I appreciate greatly your video and any wise words you may add here.
It is a brighter white but for me i plan it cover it all with bedliner one day soon.
Oh and i have an e150 now.
@@Zuntic Thank you for your reply!
In the next week I will be doing that project to my 06 savana , but I will use galvacon. Cold galvanizing compound. And then with oil base paint
I live in the northwest and have a white 2001 2500 Express with rust in three spots on the roof starting right at the windshield and going back about a foot. The rain gutters are also rusty. I had a couple of questions. What is adequate surface prep before primer? Should the metal be shiny silver color? Did that Rust Kutter spray save time? Is it tough to match the original color using Rustoleum? Thanks so much for doing this video!
I have the 2002 GMC 3500 Savana. The paint is a disaster on the entire van.
How did you record this ..? I'm guessing you didn't hold the camera in one hand and the brush / sander in the other ..? Bc I have the same issue and I'm going to do a similar project. Sand the roof bare ... and was also thinking of using the rustoleum primer and spray paint. Thanks!
Of course I have identical flaking off paint. I thought that was from spray paint.
I cannot believe!! it's actually the FACTORY paint that flakes off like that.
Im looking forward to wasting a weekend doing this. Might just do the roof (worse than this one)
I have a pressure washer, compressor, cup gun, sanders etc.
My 06 2500 express resembles a damn milk delivery van looking like a spotted cow. Doubt the fools at GM will cover this, hope white rustoleum paint does the trick.
Honda Toyota and Ford have the same issue. I figure it's DuPont or whoever supplies the paint.
There was a secret recall of the paint on these around 2000 but you have to force dealership to do it. We had a few work trucks and the owner wanted them perfect. They had to San last the entire truck as it’s in the primer coat which repels a top coat. Shame on GM.
It never stops. Never
lol you're right.
Why isn't there a class action lawsuit against GM for this?

Man, you should have done it before it rusted. Pressure was that shit off. GM should be ashamed of the crap paint job. All their vans peel. I’m shocked they can sell one. The guy at the yard bought one and I asked him wasn’t he afraid the paint would peel. He never noticed. How’s it possible with all the vans and the peeling paint you haven’t noticed. A few years later his back doors started dropping paint. He claims they will cover it.
It was rusted when i bought the van. Very common problem with the van roofs.
Water is what causes the paint to peel off so unless you want to paint the entire panel don't pressure wash. I just sprayed some bubbles with a garden hose and the paint came off in sheets.
If you just want to spot repair then scrape the edges to remove large loose sheets of paint and then sand down the edges and good paint. Clean with rubbing alcohol and then cover with primer.

@@crowdnine878 I’ve never seen a van from anybody but Gm with paint just peeling off. My last van was a ford and I sold it at 15 years and it never peeled. It’s a bonding problem with the primer.
@@Nonyabusiness911 it's there. It affects Toyota and Honda more than Ford. Ford's problem is from the last few years or so. Search for Toyota Corolla paint peeling
General Motors and Chevrolet have had this problem for 20+ years they should be kicked in the nuts for not fixing this BS.
Yes they should, the paint came off the whole van.
I have a 2016… SAME DANG THING! They still haven’t fixed the problem!

So, yeah my entire van is doing this. Well, a lot more on the driver's side than the passenger side, but the whole roof is peeling. I'm able to more or less take the peeling paint off with a high pressure garden hose. So I'm going to grind/strip the whole thing down to metal at least on that side, and repaint with either plasti-dip or raptor liner. My big question is, if I just paint over the passenger side, which isn't peeling, will that paint fail soon and take the raptor liner off with it!?!?!? This is just painful.
On my van after i did the roof and spot of paint that i left on peeled off about 2 months later. So i would think that any old paint would potentially peel. I no longer have the gmc van so i do not know how it is doing still.
@@Zuntic Thanks for the reply. Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. Best to take the finish down to metal and start over. What a pain.
the paint they used on those things was such garbage
What's the cause of this !? There methods or product or both??
The metal that was used in the construction of the vehicle is the cause of the paint peeling.
@@Zuntic its the primmer fords Toyotas hondas all have this problem
The primer and paint are incompatible
should last a couple of years
