I had a crushed wing panel, quoted £300 minimum to get it replaced. Got my own panel for £60 and lets say about £60 on paint, primer, lacquer, tac cloths, sanding pads and rubbing compound. I won't include all the tools haha I had to get a torque wrench, socket set and ratchet, spanners. But those things I needed anyway and will be used for all sorts of things in the future. All sorted, looks great and I learned a lot about the process. It did take a bit of time though. One thing I would recommend to anyone is when sanding, use a sanding sponge as it's more flexible and soft, not the paper which is tougher and has pressure spots. Also, don't give up, learn as you go and adapt what you do.

Dunno why, but I prefer these at-home in your own garage paints more than the ones in the big booths with the complex gear. I guess its because I'm more of a DIY guy and seeing this kind of stuff helps me see it from how a professional painter would "attack" a project like this and how they think about it, versus how I would think about it.

the thing is , those big booths allows to paint wider, whole car and bigger areas. Way better ventilation and paint dusts extraction. You can't say 'at-home' is better than big booths lol , thats just too immature. When you paint at home, your whole house inside is exposed to the paint dusts as well. If you smell the paint spray, you breath it.

    • @Munky332
      @Munky332 7 месяцев назад +1

@@MTLJack Did I say it was *better* in any context above?
I said I preferred a vid where a dude who does this day in and day out can look at a project and say "here's how we're going to approach this and get good enough results that can be replicated by DIY'ers at home"
I understand the detriments of painting at home, I've done it five times now on entire vehicles, and several other times on smaller parts.

Can I ask a question? You mentioned that you didn't want to spray over the areas that still had good paint, and I noticed you kept true to that with the primer. It was a little harder to see with the base coat footage. Did you end up spraying the entire panel with the base coat, or did you leave some spots untouched? Same question for the clear…

Hi so I followed your steps in this video and my diy paint I did came out really really good! I did the whole driver side of my car similar to your video the driver side door, rear door and the upper pillar down to the rear quarter panel. I used about 2 full cans of 2k spray max clear coat. Today I looked at it and it looks really good and shiny some spots have no orange peel and really smooth and some spots on the doors have some orange peel and texture. I think I put a good 3 or 4 layers of clear coat with the 2 full cans I’m not exactly sure but it looks even all around. What should I do next to make it less orange Peely and more smoother and no texture? Should I dry sand it like you did with 2k grit then re spray with more 2k clear? I’m a little afraid of using the buffer on it I don’t wanna risk taking off a lot of clear coat material…..the csi Compound you used is a cut and polish solution all in one? I just want to avoid cutting too much. Also how many days should I wait before sanding and trying to cut and polish ?

Please make a video for beginners who plan to paint their cars in their garage one or two times with lower budget materials and equipment. For example, how to manage painting a whole car with a smaller compressor (8-21 gallons), using a LVLP gun, sanding materials and etc that are affordable and maybe could be bought locally or at a big box store. This is more realistic for those who have nothing and will go out to buy things to paint their cars once or a couple times only without a big investement. I appreciate the videos but some of them for example using a cheap gun but the compressor used is professional or beginners guide video but done at a painting booth using a pro gun or painting at home garage but using a dedicated expensive turbine paint sprayer ($1400+). Just an idea but your videos are very helpful. Thanks!

Great Video! 2 questions. Have a black car which has bad clear with scratches in one area but the rest of the paint is good clear. Do I sand the prime only the bad clear? Or do I sand down the bad clear, prime it, 600-800 sand the rest of the panel and then what? Prime the rest of the good clear too or just base coat it after 600-800 sand? Also, I heard using duplicolor and spary max is bad because it will lift the paint becuase of laquer and urethane. Will eastwood be ok with duplicolor? Thanks again Brian for all that you do.

This is so far the best rattle can lowdowns I've seen. Thanks much!
2 question topics for you and/or anyone with an opinion reading this:
    1. I'm painting a small car (currently dark green) via rattle cans, because I'm cheap that way and proud of it! 😆 If I'm using the same brand (and paint type) of primer and color coat (in my case it's Rust-Oleum semi-gloss black paint+Primer 2X, and gloss Hammered Black), is it better to allow the primer to dry for 24 hours, sand/clean, and then spray the 3 color coats? Or, is it better to spray the 2 coats primer, let it dry for 30 to 45 minutes, and then start the 3 color coats? What's best for bonding and/or drying of all layers so it doesnt take too long to evaporate VOCs and dry? I'm planning to let the car sit in an open carport for 3 full days (to dry) before driving again. We have about 20% humidity at most, and 75F degree temperature days at present.
    2. Since 2018, in Colorado USA, I've noticed spray paint in hardware stores has increased price 100% (at minimum), when it's in stock at all. Is it the same for you? How about the professional brands and paints for booth use?
Do you think the stores are keeping this profit, or the manufacturers, or the oil industry? Or maybe they're all so comfortable together in business it's like one big entity? 😆
Fuel is 150% higher than 2 years ago, for us in Colorado, so I'm personally interested how all things made of oil, or supported by oil-based transportation (diesel trucking), prices' are affected in the global economies. Thanks much!

Thanks for the informative video Brian! Always helpful and encouraging!
I hope you will have additional turbine sprayer videos. Especially tips re Fuji gun tip size, setup, and techniques. I have a Fuji 4 stage. Great system but find that Fuji Spray is lacking in automotive related info.
    Thanks again!

Using such cheap materials I would just do the whole car so all the panels match, will get the money back at resale.

Im just looking for info abouts, an existing paint job on a 55 chevy my dad had painted years back. One corner is starting to fade. 😮 A quick sand buff and clear to protect that affected area.

Just a question on the final clear coat at 16:00. Seems to be laying on real thick. How do you do this without it dripping?

Your video is still helping people 3 years later! Great teacher..me as a student not so much. Would love a follow up on how to fix things like uneven basecoats and rough appearances. 🙃 Totally messed up and clear coated over it…and now I get to look at it under a protective layer..smh..beginner mistakes for sure.

Wait for it to completely dry and do the same process again. The clear coat is the same chemically as what originally came on the car. Only difference is age it has been on. Put atleast three coats of color on .

Great job and very well detailed video. Excellent job.
Wish I could hire you to do the clear coat on my 2008 335XI Dual Turbo White BMW!!!
I'm having trouble selling it (even though it only has 78K original miles on it) because the clear coat on the hood is peeling and it's not making it easy to sell even at a reduced price. A drag for sure.
All the best from the Jersey Shore.

I tried my best. Had lots of areas where my paint flew off my Hyundai in sheets. No matter what I did, I couldn't get rid of the chip line where the flake meets car paint. I'm female and short. I did everything, sand in between... can you believe that when I lifted a piece of the tape, a big piece of paint came off in another area attached to the painters tape. Unbelievable. I'm going to finish with poly. This whole ordeal really stinks that Hyundai doesn't back this. I just pray that it doesn't rust. Well, back at it! 👍 I'm just grateful to God that in my late 60s, I can still do this crazy stuff. I don't have 7k lying around! Sorry for whining, but these last 2 days have been a nightmare.

Just wanted to say I've learned a lot from your videos thank you for doing them. I have 30 years experience painting homes but would like to try and repair and paint some pealing clearcoat on my Mitsubishi 3000 which had a mid coat paint on it. Do you have any tips for me. The color is Misty white pearl and I will be using paint from Paint Scratch. I did paint the back spoiler which was I think a PVC plastic and it turned out pretty nice but now I want to give the roof which has only base coat paint left on it and the hood which is flaking not really peeling off. Thanks for any help Mark Battaglia

OP you are a past master at auto paint and you make it look easy! Meanwhile I know it's not easy, and about as far from "EASY" as anything can get. And I get why the paint shops cost thousands since you are paying for their skills BUT - nobody but an insurance company can afford them. And if you're too old and crippled like some folks (i.e. me) you're pretty much stuck if the only way you could do this is if you had to try and do it yourself.
In summary I wish it were as easy to do as you make it look, and I am a loser with no skills. Also next time please show more of the cat. Thank you

In order to fix a spot on panel have to paint the whole panel. Is that correct?
You had said you sanded the whole panel. The lower door where there is still a full clear coat, do you just sand it to be smooth? You arent trying to get all the clear coat off there too, I believe .

Years ago I got made fun of, painting my car one panel at a time with spray cans. After about the third panel it started to look like something. Its amazing how much a little bit of shinny paint will change the personality of a rig.

Very nice video! I do have a question, though. Instead of using filler primer on the parts where the clear coat peeled off, can I use sealer primer instead? then, apply basecoat without sanding?

  • @inee107

    1. did you spray base over base (door handle area was not sanded or primed)?
    2. is it a bit overkill to unwrap, wash, spray cleaner, degreaser, tack, rewrap? could you have just spray cleaned while taped up?
    3. what were the DA settings?
    4. could you have just sprayed clear after sanding and avoid priming? wouldnt clear adhere to the sanded base feathered off?

I dunno, just seems like alot of primer/ base coat wasted, I do get the filling concept to a degree, but maybe I missed the purpose all together. just looks like a bunch of unnecessary steps and wasted product/ time, but I'm a amateur, what do I know?
