Great work with spray cans. Besides a respirator, I'd say use sanding blocks or pads. Very surprised that your heavy/close spray with the 2k worked as well as it did. Looks like the magic was in your prep and post sanding. Great video!
Likewise! I was worries about the orange peel and waited until thr and and thought "oh no, this didn't work out". But he nailrd it A to Z with the detailed care on the sanding and polishing until it looked perfect. I used to apply this without wet sanding. I thought orange peel was a technique error. @@Omarrr77There will always be orange peel with rattle cans as there is not enough pressure in the cans. The good thing is that with a little elbow grease, cut and buff, the paint will look great. Big improvement! To avoid the sharp transition between the old paint and the new paint you can backmask and blend the base coat into about 3- 6 inches into the quarter panel. Good work keep it up!
You got a great finish for a diy project! Looks great! There are 2 reasons that your duplicator is lighter, you need more coats of it to get true coverage with that stuff and you need dark paint behind it because the car is dark. The light colored primer behind it makes the paint appear lighter

I am busy with my 24year old Golf 4 Volkswagen. Meanwhile I got very good results by restaurating INSIDE and outside. It's worth, it is a very good car, has an 1.9 liter machine and only needs 5l Diesel/100 km. Every weekend I am spending on detailing and laque restauration from stone damaging. The only damages are resulting from stonefall and a less of being uncarefully, so helpfully with your super Tipps I hope to bei succesful in restaurating the surface. Thank you!
Homie…..for your health……when spraying that 2k clear you need a respirator …..isocyanates are super toxic. Please let your followers know that as well.
Next time just check how many coats u need to put on for the base. Als the primer color matters as well. Some colors call for black primer because it will end up tinting the base color.
Best to remove the door handle and belt moldings vs. tape them off. Why? The clear/color coat will lift where the frog tape met with the molding as there is no surface prep to hold it. Otherwise, this is a great alternative to professional body shop methods which simply revert to complete paint of doors. One alternative to the rattle can color coat. Get a pint of color matched paint from a local automotive paint shop. Heavy on the clear so it doesn't do this again. Looks better than it did and thats the important part.
If you can pay for it take it to the shop probably add $500-$1000. So if you have near perfect conditions at home it saves money but will never be perfect.
My Toyota Avalon is doing this same thing. It's a Desert Sand Mica, so it's a gold color basically. You did an excellent job on your project, I may have to try this on my own car now. Sure beats having the whole car painted. Most of the clear coat is gone from the hood and across the top of the rocker panels, the rest is pristine.
Well so far I'm impressed with the 303 touchless I made sure I treated my clear coat with 50% water and vinegar to get out the calcium I believe this is monumentive treating the surface to get all the impurities out that gives the longevity of the product a standing chance and that should be one of your biggest videos ever Will be going to the 303 graphite next thank you for your effort You're awesome
Awesome job on that for a DIY! I do mobile bodyshop work for a living and wanted to add two things: 1) you can get custom matched paint cans made for you at local paint shops. I get them for about $20 each when I need a color that I can’t easily make. They spray better and match better then Duplicolor. Larger cans too. 2). You can cut down on orange peel a huge amount amount by spraying the 2nd-last layer of clear much wetter, it’ll make the wet sand and polish process 10x easier. Most jobs don’t even need a polish when applied in that way. Great work and way to get out there and do stuff! Too much talk from most people.
This is inspiring, especially for the guys that don't have all the cool tools and still want a clean ride. Great job on your video, Homes! Keep up the good work.

This video is really useful for people looking to repair and maintain their daily old beater, a cheap second hand car or a track machine that will get scuffed all the time. At the end of the day, in many cases you only need something that is functional, protects the metal and looks quite good. If you paid little for a vehicle or it is very old you won't probably go to a body shop and spend a fortune there. Thanks! Oh, btw, please use a respirator! That clear coat is very toxic!
I'm fixing the clear coat on my side mirrors that have spots of the clear coat eaten away by acid from bugs hitting them. I have 2 foam sanding blocks 400/600 and 1000/1500 grits. I dry sanded up to the 1000 and wet sanded the 1500 grit. I taped plastic painters sheets over the door and fender and bent the mirror to it's folded position and am putting 3-5 very light applications of rattle can clear on. It's turning out very well.
I just bought the B-92P paint for my Honda as well. Duplicolor. I tested it on something else and held it up to the car and it was wayyy off. Really blue. What I did was I applied a basic black base for 3 coats (it was over light Grey primer) then did a final dust coat with the b92p. It was a very close match
The problem is your repair looks better than the original finish next to it!!! Great job. I hadn't seen that clear coat product with the hardener in it before. It truly makes a spray can repair a real repair. thanks for the video.
Great video and great job on that car. You should machine polish and wax the rest of the car. The color match might be closer than you think. Oxidation on the clear can keep the full brilliance of metallic and pearl from showing through. I buffed and polished a Honda Civic a few years ago that looked to be black.it turned out to be dark blue metallic so a little bit of oxidation can hide things
Wow. That’s pretty amazing work. Wish all the “kids” in my town would watch this before they spray paint their cars. Lol. I had no idea you could get results like that. Great job.
Im getting ready to wet sand, compound and polish my 99 Jeep. Hood is trashed tho. If i can get color matched in an aerosol can, your video has given me the confidence to do the hood. THNK U!!
Quick summary; apply 600grid wetsandpaper on damaged areas, 1000grid wetsandpaper on all, dry with microfiber, apply primer on 600gridded areas, apply color x3pass on damaged areas , apply clearcoat on all x3pass. Wetsand with 2000 all areas x3pass. Apply compound on all x3 pass..
Great video Hektor! I liked the step by step and the actual grit that you used. Have some clear coat failure on the roof of my civic, might actually try your method
You need to learn to "walk the car." Never start, stop, or reverse direction of a spray in the middle of a panel. You should have started each pass behind the back of the rear door and gone all the way past the front end of the front door and then stopped your spray. Shake the can and start spraying on the masked off section at the front and work your way to the masked off section past the rear door, maintaining the same steady walking pace for each pass. Your color coats were too heavy and uneven. Did you let the color coat dry for at least a month before applying the 2k clear? If not, you will probably get bubbling in a few months, and certainly within a year. Right now you have wet paint encased between the metal doors and the cured 2k clear, and it does not have a chance to properly dry. For your hand sanding you should have wrapped the sandpaper around a sponge to avoid uneven pressure points from your hands. And soak wet/dry sandpaper in water for at least 5 minutes before doing wet sanding. And ALWAYS WEAR GLOVES when prepping and painting to both protect the paint area from skin oils, and your skin from paint. Ideally, you should also have a long sleeve shirt on as well, and goggles. A $15 painting gas mask from Harbor Freight will give you pretty decent protection from the paint fumes, which are toxic gases. The damage to your lungs and skin is cumulative. Worse, 2k clear can permanently destroy parts of your brain. That stuff is about as dangerous as you can buy legally. Always protect yourself.
Dude that looks really good! I would imagine if you fixed your spot and then sanded and primed the whole door it would have been to where you couldn’t tell. But honestly it looks 1million times better!
After watching your video, I think I’m going to give it a try on my 2007 Tacoma’s roof, hood and some of the doors. The way I see it, is that I can’t make it look worse than it is now. Thanks for the inspiration on a DIY. 👍

I need to fix some clearcoat and it is good to see how differant people do it. I was allways taught there is allways things to learn. I was taught to never rub your paint back using just your hands. Yhe pressure from your fingers can leave lines in the paint, use a rubbing block.
WOWWWW AMAZING WORK!! Only thing I would do different is go to a paint store and give them your exact paint code and they’ll match it perfectly. Usually it’s 25$ per can well worth it esp if you’re going to put the work in with wet sand. Great job man
Why did you primer it ? All you had to do was reclear it. Roll the tape length wise and place it around the affected area and then clear it. The rolled tape will give you a soft edge. There was really no reason to primer & repaint. But to each their own. @@scrappy7509 paper mask is fine I don’t even use a mask people do graffiti and don’t use one 25 dollars for a painter’s mask if I had it laying around do what’s good with you you can also cover nose and mouth with a shirt held with one hand and other with spray can
@@eduardoosorio5199 2k clear coats and spray paint are different in terms of toxicity. 2k contains isocyanates that is basically poison and your skin can even absorb it as well. Look it up. 2k is not to be messed with and if you sprayed 2k with no mask, you are bound to have long term damage down the road.
@@The1Music2MyEars I’ve used it hundreds times without a mask I’m fine still feel same way still
I did my Acura TSX today. omg what a difference! looks good now.
Homie Hektor I must say you got it going on brother, I like your style!
Hektor, that's one of the best home DIY videos on paint restoration I've seen...Good common sense advice for rattle can spraying...Hermano, Please use some kind of respirator!
Stealth G35 Infiniti 👍🏼
That’s legit inspiring. It looks so satisfying and a fun way to spend a weekend. Thank you for this video and showing us a REAL affordable way to have our old things be nice again.
Perhaps, but it needs sanding in the end. This was great
Definitely use a respirator! You don't need the aerosols in your lungs.
@@Omarrr77There will always be orange peel with rattle cans as there is not enough pressure in the cans. The good thing is that with a little elbow grease, cut and buff, the paint will look great. I did this to my 2015 Infiniti Q50 hood, bumper and fenders. No one can believe that i used rattle cans. Even my brother who helped me with the prep work. Also had a few friends who are painters were extremely impressed. Only paid 300 for the front end instead of 2300 like i was quoted. Use your paint code and have a local auto paint shop premix them. Exact match! Have fun
@@demented392rt5 Is that amount of buffing and polishing a must or does there exist any products which you can just spray on and get a nice clean finish?
Thank you for the video! You demonstrated exactly why sanding and polishing after clear coat is needed, I didn't realise the huge difference it makes. I'm off to spray the clear coat on the bonnet now (first time every attempting to paint a car) Have a great day
Best video on YT so far! I was scared to do the last sanding part and just polished it with polishing wax and the result is great!
Big improvement! To avoid the sharp transition between the old paint and the new paint you can backmask and blend the base coat into about 3- 6 inches into the quarter panel. Good work keep it up!
Been learning a lot recently and just learned ab back masking and I was gonna say the exact same thing lol.
Backmask?
What is back masking?
Yes, what is it? Explain please.
You got a great finish for a diy project! Looks great! There are 2 reasons that your duplicator is lighter, you need more coats of it to get true coverage with that stuff and you need dark paint behind it because the car is dark. The light colored primer behind it makes the paint appear lighter
Like Adam said...
Well done.. Perfect presentation and technique descriptions.. best video I've seen in a long time..
Have alot of clear coat issues and you've given me the confidence to proceed..thx
Thank you!
Hektor, the problem with professionals is, that they always make the difficult look so easy. Thanks for sharing; great job.
Homie…..for your health……when spraying that 2k clear you need a respirator …..isocyanates are super toxic. Please let your followers know that as well.
This can not be stated enough. And not a Covid face mask. An actual respirator. 2k clear is no joke.
i wore a mask but i still smelled it
Next time just check how many coats u need to put on for the base.
With all this time and products, would it be worth it for the average diy-er to take it to the shop?
If you can pay for it take it to the shop probably add $500-$1000. So if you have near perfect conditions at home it saves money but will never be perfect.
My Toyota Avalon is doing this same thing. It's a Desert Sand Mica, so it's a gold color basically. You did an excellent job on your project, I may have to try this on my own car now. Sure beats having the whole car painted. Most of the clear coat is gone from the hood and across the top of the rocker panels, the rest is pristine.
Tried to recreate your results and failed miserably. Definitely respect what you were able to do here especially on black paint!
You cannot see his real result of color matching cause it’s a joke of work
Well so far I'm impressed with the 303 touchless I made sure I treated my clear coat with 50% water and vinegar to get out the calcium I believe this is monumentive treating the surface to get all the impurities out that gives the longevity of the product a standing chance and that should be one of your biggest videos ever Will be going to the 303 graphite next thank you for your effort You're awesome
Is the calcium in the coat or beneith it before applying ..?
Awesome job on that for a DIY! I do mobile bodyshop work for a living and wanted to add two things:
1) you can get custom matched paint cans made for you at local paint shops.
Of course it's a UA5 3.2TL, LOL. I'm convinced I have the only one in existence without failed clear coat. Excellent work, you knocked it out of the park!
This was very helpful. I like how you showed each step and results.
I use 2k clear coat on a lot of stuff, iv’e done headlights literally perfect and didn’t need to sand em after I just did a nice wet coat
I hope you wear a respirator. That's a bottle of cancer you are spraying.
@@teemoleague907 oh yeah I do I wear the best one for it but you gotta replace it everytime

If the damage was just in the clear coat was the primer and base coat really necessary? Can someone explain?
No wasn't Necessary
Very nice repair. Way cheaper than a body shop. Kudos.
Great video and nice result. I appreciate your honesty about the color match...not perfect but really improved and functional.
Painting is too dangerous with out PPE equipment take. Care yourselp
Hey brother looks awesome what is the time frame from start to finish on this project? I’m interested in doing my hood roof and trunk. Thanks 🙏🏼
That is outstanding nice work! Especially out of a rattle can
Very helpful and informative! I’m going into this repair with confidence now. You’re an inspiration!
Great video. Love the presentation and your description is well detailed and delivered. Simplicity was key.
Overall very good work.
The problem is your repair looks better than the original finish next to it!!! Great job. I hadn't seen that clear coat product with the hardener in it before. It truly makes a spray can repair a real repair. thanks for the video.
You need glasses
@@roymoxley2587 I left them at your mom's house. Can you grab them for me, they're on the night stand next to her bed.
Great job.
Love the old TLs! They are all rotted out here though😥
Best cars ever
Very nice. My 1 suggestion is that primer needs about 180 grit for a good bond. Check the can for the best grit for your primer to bond to.
Im getting ready to wet sand, compound and polish my 99 Jeep. Hood is trashed tho. If i can get color matched in an aerosol can, your video has given me the confidence to do the hood. THNK U!!
Man that is beautiful work Hektor, thanks for sharing!
Great video!
Nice Damaged Clear Coat repair!! excellent work!!
Bro, you're flipping crazy doing all that spraying w/o any breathing protection apparatus.
Especially the clear coat - that things is dangerous for lungs
What breathing level do you suggest?
One of the best, if not the best video on YT for car body paint repair! Thank!
Skills that one can’t put a price on!Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Great video Hektor! I liked the step by step and the actual grit that you used. Have some clear coat failure on the roof of my civic, might actually try your method
Let's just activate the clear coat on the door panel so we can dent it when we have cement on the floor lmao
Lmfao
That's hilarious 😂
Lmaoooo
That was crazy.
instantly went to the comments when I saw that....LOL
I just ran across this. Props to you, that's some beautiful work for just rattle cans. You've got skillz bro!
That's the best wet sanding tutorial I've ever seen!
Lol who the hell waits a whole month between color-coat and clear-coat, be realistic dude hahah
@@rmkbaws I think he said a month because most places that paint cars have ovens.
You’re spraying 2k clear without a respirator???
This can kill you, or at the very least, do severe damage to your lungs and skin.
Agreed. Haven't seen him respond to anyone about it either. 2k is NASTY stuff.

I need to fix some clearcoat and it is good to see how differant people do it. I was allways taught there is allways things to learn. I was taught to never rub your paint back using just your hands. Yhe pressure from your fingers can leave lines in the paint, use a rubbing block.
Great work! Looks amazing!
Awesome work brah, learning thank you

WOWWWW AMAZING WORK!! Only thing I would do different is go to a paint store and give them your exact paint code and they’ll match it perfectly. Usually it’s 25$ per can well worth it esp if you’re going to put the work in with wet sand. Great job man

Good Work men ...I got the roof with same damage ..in a Mercedes 230 E old Year 92 ... Tank you for video .😊
These Old Nissan Máximas always have damaged clear coat 😂
Its Acura
Why did you primer it ?
All you had to do was reclear it.
Roll the tape length wise and place it around the affected area and then clear it.
The rolled tape will give you a soft edge.
There was really no reason to primer & repaint.
But to each their own.
If anyone is interested in mixing paints (cans), here is a quick video I did the other day.
