- Time to brighten up these gauges with a full gauge cluster and interior conversion from JDMastar automotive LEDs.
JDMastar saw the video of the autometer gauge install and reached out to do a full interior conversion on our Fox. This video IS a bit long but I go into detail showing two different methods, 1 with WHITE LEDs behind your stock red filter caps and one with pulling out the red filter caps and installing super bright RED LEDs.

All. Just FYI, Im pretty sure JDM is no longer a company, so unfortunately my discount code no longer applies.
Explains why I can’t find the bulbs. Lol didn’t realize this vid was 2 years old
For the record, the fuel gauge is lighting back up now. I pulled it and reseated it. ALSO I use the word "diffuser" like 100 times in this, likely not the proper term for the red filter caps.
Hey, Great video. What was the part # for the led dome light? I love how it made your interior light up. I need one for mine. Also I have to send you some pictures of the many up grades I've done to my car since we last talked. Hope your family is doing well. Take care.
In the last headliner video, you brought up the idea of making an insert or cover to go on the t top glass. I would love to see this because I've thought about doing it on my 88 t top. Hope to see it. Love your videos man. You and brew2l always do cool stuff!
I still have plans to do this...I think since its not as hot out, other projects took priority. I'll makw sure to bring it back!
Awesome review love how LEDs lights make Fox body Mustangs look newer
This is by far the best install and review of LED for fox bodies. I needed this. Thanks. I have a 93 Cobra that came with a green cluster so I hope they have green bulbs.
Gotta love them LED’s such a big difference they make. Looks great.
I really wish we would have been able to see the white bulbs 'without' the red caps/diffusers! Thanks for the vid!!!
I might do that next if anyone else is interested.
Awesome video !!! Totally can’t wait to revamp my gauges on my 86 , thanks for leading the way
I'm loving the LEDs. What a difference.
This definitely gave me an idea of what to expect replacing bulbs in my 86.
I did research on red vs blue led dash lights. BLue lights are harsher on your eyes. Air planes mostly have red because it's easier on your eyes.
Just finished this project, thanks for this video it helped a lot.
Damn that dome light 😎.. good stuff buddy fox looking good
Looks sweeet! I always change my bulbs to blue on my mustangs. Might go red one day since my radio has like 1k custom colors to match, lol.
looks good love the lights
Awesome gonna do this to my 82 thanks for share looks great man
Thanks man! You'll like it. Much brighter gauges.
Great video Mike, it's nice too that if you put the light in backwards you don't have to take it back apart. I think I'm going with JDM
Thanks for posting. Something to look into
Yessir!
I did an LED upgrade in my 84 3.8L with LMR red LED kit. Worked great. I tried those partsam sockets you recommended but they are way too tight. I was worried it would damage the circuit board so I used the old ones that seemed to be in good shape still.
Nice I saved since I plan to do on my 86 LX notch.
The green looks cool. I think just white lights with the stock gauge overlay looked great too, really was easy to see the lettering
@@HOUSEOFDULA ya I agree convert to the white. Red will get annoying over time.
Nice video man. I'll need to do this to Molly.
Thanks Brian
Awesome 👍
fantastic
Wow what a difference! Looks like u took the mustang to Mars with all that red!
good stuff
Dam I’m ordering now thanks bud
Cool to be honest I wondered why you went red in a blue car but i have a 87 my 86's i didn't have long enough to know they are supposed to be red, thats cool love the dome light too
Hi what's the name of the tool you used to remove the dome light cover ?
Which led did you use for the dome light ?
Guys. FYI. Look like JDM might have gone under, likey from the economical effects of covid. Trying to find a suitable replacement company !
Hey! Nice content, the HVAC has a blue film from factory, any bulb I put is going to use that blue plastic filter, how did you do it?
Thank you! Been I while. I thought that was covered in this vid, maybe not. Those bulb covers need to be snapped out carefully (likely will break from the light and age) but they clip out of the housing. Check 21:20 ish on the video
Looks great! Does the 86 have a dimmer switch? How do they look when you dim them with the switch?
Yes it does, these dim real well too.
Can someone help me? My original lights didnt work before and so I did this and now they still dont work?
Cool project MIke, The red lights look great! I swapped out to white LED's on my 86 as well. Have the same gauge cluster with white LED's for my autometer volt and water temp gauges,, Damn that dome light is like a homing beacon..lol
Thank you. Yeah. I like the white too, Id like to see how the red works out...can easily switch back and forth now the diffusers are out.
@@HOUSEOFDULA Hey Mike.. just put these exact same white LED's in my 86 Gt. II agree- the quality of the lights are much better than the cheap EBAY ones plus these are not polarity specific I have white face gauges and these now look perfect with the autometer gauges. BUT DAMN that dome light is a frkking beacon.. lol.wish I could get you some pics of my rides.. What part # are for the heater control replacement LED's as they are different than the gauge bulbs- they are twist release bulbs.
So i changed out my bulbs and after i reinstalled it my speedometer stopped working, did i put the cable in wrong or something? It’s driving me nuts
Yeah. They cable is not all the way snapped back in. Can be a pain to allign. Stick your hand back there and make sure its fully seated.
Love your videos. On your HVAC. You said you remove the 4 screws. How hard are the bulbs to get too? Thank you so much! I want to do this for my 83 GT.
Thank you! Not hard at all you just pull it away from the dash a little.
@@HOUSEOFDULA thank you for responding. Can you use the same bulbs you used for the dash gauges
@@david37203- Been a bit, so i might be off. On 1 you can that lights up the temp slider, its the same, on the other that lights up the right hand switches, it is a twist lock tiny bulb. The thing with that one is, for incandescent you have to use the same size and style, and mine burned out and I replaced it with a slightly larger one and the heat from it melted my panel! I ended up using a small white LED there (once I found another used hvac panel), but I didn't look for a red one for it specifically, or couldn't find one. Its unique.
@@HOUSEOFDULA thank you again. You seem like a really cool guy. I appreciate it.
@@david37203 Anytime! I appreciate that ;)
Do you need a ballast to adjust for the change in voltage or just pop the new bulbs in?
I didnt use a ballast. BUT I can say not much dims lol pretty much on and off so maybe I need one.
Awesome video. Red looks nice, but I’m thinking white with no diffuser would look pretty cool too!!
I’m assuming they are less of a draw on the electrical system as well (for those of us who still havnt upgraded the alternator).
Another thought.... white face overlays with red led may be the way to go.
Have you thought about going RGB lighting so you can choose what ever color you'd like? I love it as it is though, just an idea.
What's RGB
@@93coupes26 red, green, blue lighting i think, and to get different colors it makes the 3 different colors dimmer and brighter, thats my understanding
Did you find another company to get these bulbs from? Also part numbers?
Not a specific company no, but there are plenty of sites all over selling these, even from amazon. Search 194 LEDs
Now that it’s been a bit, any issues with the red getting too hot?
How many bulbs are needed to do the whole conversion?
I'll do an update soon...Interior has all been perfect zero heat issues or melting or anything like that. They really dont run hot and the cluster bulbs are not too close to anything to really melt it. MAN number of bulbs...lol I dont recall, been a bit since I did this. If I remember its 5 Red for the cluster "color" 2 whites (for the turn signal) one white for the brights LED. 3 whites for the "dummy warning" lights. Then 2 RED for my after market gauges. if you count that.
@@HOUSEOFDULA what about the heat controls, how many and what colors?
I got a question about the gauge it’s self. On the back of my cluster where the connectors go on the gauge I have pieces of copper looking strip not laying down will that affect my lighting?
It could depending on what connection that goes to. That copper and plastic is basically a cirquit board for the cluster...gauge input and lights. Its very common for these copper strips to lift off the plastic. When this happens when you put the connector back on it bend, fold over, short, etc...I think about 4 of mine we're loose and popped up. I took a little super glue on the backside to lay if back down. Just make sure the glue stay off the top where it makes contact to the connector.
HOUSE OF DULA what super glue do you recommend
@@larrycumby332 Oh man any lol I think I used gorilla glue gel
Was really thinking about doing the same to my 86 how are they holding up since were getting closer to that one year mark?
So far great. Not a single issue! Love it when I drive at night.
Awsome thanks for the reply! I ended up doing the same love it such an improvement over stock
Now that your engine is built, any over heating issues?
nope. It runs absolutely great. Strong engine.
Was your heater control red before you swapped to leds? i got a 79 and it seems to be green glas or diffuser in mine
Yes it was. Likely someone swapped it with an 79-82 unit as those are green. The tint is in the lettering is either red or green from Ford.
@@HOUSEOFDULA Bummer because i just changed my cluster to red leds and now i got to go green or white instead but thanks for the reply
@@mikaeljensen2980 Sorry I miss-read, yes all 79-82 would have been green diffusers. It should have been green before you swapped, unless all lights we're out...was hard to notice the color...So yes, if you ordered red LEDs and didnt know your cluster was green, then I feel bad if this vid led you to buy red leds! If you like red, and I do, you can swap the heater panel with a red on from an 85-86. Sorry man, should have mentioned the color changes from the early 4-eyed.
@@HOUSEOFDULA no its not your fault. Got them before i saw your video. Used the video so that i knew what to do when i got it taken apart.
@@mikaeljensen2980 Sweet
Do they come in green for my '82 GL Mustang?
Yes sir, they do make green. However it seems like the company is out of business as the website is down.
👍🏽
Question (for anyone really). I did a LED cluster conversion on my 89 about 6 months ago (except the check engine light as I read that one should stay stock). I wish I had bought them from this company now because mine are polarity sensitive and not made quite as nice. Anyway, since then I have noticed that my gauges tend to sort of "float" now. For instance, my oil pressure gauge constantly sits dead center when the car is on and the needle does not drop when I cut the car off. I have to turn the key forward one time (key over engine off) for it to drop. My other 3 gauges fluctuate slowly by about 1/2 tick mark. All of my sensors are new and my alternator is a 3G, but it was doing it before the alternator swap. The difference is amazing but I'm wondering if 14 LEDs might be too much or it's some other problem.
check your IVR and grounds
Thanks for the reply. The voltage regulator is in the alternator on an 89. It was doing this with the stock alternator and the 3G, so I've ruled that out as a possible cause. I checked the grounds previously when trying to solve this and they are good. I've read that the firewall to engine ground wire is for the gauges. I even added a 4 gauge ground when I installed the 3G.
I bought led dash lights off ebay along with led headlights which I thought you pretty cool with the built in fans. Anyways I didn't know they had to be right, put it all back together and 3 were backwards. I was pretty upset lol
My 93 was a bitch compared to the 4 eye dash.
Oh yeah! WAY easy on a 4 eye.
on the LED lights with polarity, just take a 9V battery or a power probe and test each light to find out which side is + and - then mark the + side. You can trace the + and - circuit on the back of the circuit board on the gauges. Not a fan of LED headlights as they blind on coming traffic
they crafty Chinese are making Led bulbs AMERICAN proof now... id be surprised if jdm made them bulbs here in America ? i like their bulbs but they are way over price for me..
This is true. I asked JDM to give more details about the company, didnt get much back. They are most likely Chinese made, but at least the company itself is America. Damn near everything is made in China now days. Quality of these bulbs are better than Ive seen though so that reflects in the price.
@@HOUSEOFDULA HIGH GREAT video only have one problem Your link for JDM ASTAR IS no longer working but I think they went out of business I get a message saying the site is not a good site???
great channel. My son and I are working on an 1984 GT500 Anniversary edition 2.3 turbo 5 spd hatch hardtop no tees or sunroof. Completely stock original even the speakers are but no good dam rear hatch speakers are hard to find.
@@danwilson1020 Man your right!! Dang I need to update the description. Looks like someone didnt pay a bill. I have not had any contact with them since this video really, but do keep in contact with Boslla. I need to reach out to them to see if they can offer equivlant PN's for our foxes.
