It's funny from a distance I thought well, it doesn't look TOO bad. Then they showed the door lock and the pits in the roof pillar just painted over. And orange peel city too. Can't believe someone would actually take a car like that to a Maaco. He got what he deserved.
Maaco is pretty well known to do shotty prep work (which is why they’re priced so cheap) I’d have to agree with you here… the issue is under the base, potentially the primer or perhaps even below that (remember he said it began bubbling in the same spots as before) to correct one must sand the affected areas down to bare metal, re-prime and begin the blending process which shouldn’t be that difficult as the paint is too new to have faded and this vehicle is likely garage kept. $7000 is what I’d charge for a badass black finish on this car, x4 clearcoat, maybe less depending on what dents he needed pulled, long story short is you get what you pay for in this case
@@sheendean4802 Back in the 80;s they would paint anything one color for $99. Hand you a roll of tape and some paper so you could mask it yourself in the parking lot. This is NOT the place you take a classic car looking for quality work. lol
Ah , the paint to stick ! At a minimal . It's a paint job he paid for not Buble wrap , regardless of the cost . If a body shop can't manage to make their paint stick and warranty that , then they should take up knitting or something they cannot F......... Up .
Price means nothing in this case. This car was painted with too much moisture in the air, or the car was never fully dried after wet sanding. Moisture under the paint has nowhere to go and will start lifting the paint as it dries and vaporizes. Tough and expensive job to fix correctly at this point.
The car was not stripped as the reporter claims. That would have cost over $3500 in labor alone. It was only stripped in certain areas to do minor bodywork and rock chips as you see on the receipt. You can clearly see in the photo the old lacquer paint is still on there. No modern urethane coatings are going to bond to that. It will always bubble and peel sooner or later no matter what you do or what primer you use. This is not a paint or Maaco issue. This is an issue of Cheap Chuck refusing to pay what it needs to be done properly and why Maaco ghosted him. IT HAS TO BE STRIPPED to bare metal.
@@themobseat Polyurethane paint SHOULD stick to ANY prior kinda paint ( IF prepped correctly and EPOXY SEALED over it) but, yeah... @Kyle Yeah, I would hope for 20 Grand it would include sheet metal and all body work. This is why no shops like doing full body resto because it takes too long and ties the shop up and at the end of the day, there is only Maco and Earl Shieb left.

I looking at the reflection at the 1:53 mark, and 2:23 mark, beside the "bubble", where the "white" reflection is. That's called an ORANGE PEEL finish and is indicative of a very poor painter who doesn't know how to spray paint. This is very likely the best that could ever come out of a "MAACO" shop. Very poor prep work is why the bubbles start. The 3:01 mark is truly atrocious. They might get a better finish using a paint brush. That's NOT bubbling or peeling, or cracking. It is a plain garbage paint job ......WHICH HAS NO WARRANTY. I would NEVER take ANY kind of automotive work to a MAACO. Maybe a child's metal wagon might be OK. .
I was so ready to sympathize for this guy, and then I heard he took his classic car to Maaco. If you are dumb enough to do that and not do basic homework on shops before getting your car painted, I can't really feel bad for you. He deserves what he got.
You are right If he goes to court The judge probably will make macco repaint his car then the Judge should draw something like this on the core order🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I’m laughing right along with you! I’ve been restoring and collecting mainly GTOs the past 40+ years. I remember painting my first endura bumper around 1984 on a 68 GTO and had to strip and repaint it about 6 times before I gave up and talked to an old painter Buddy of mine. He just laughed and showed me the correct method and ingredients. Flex agent? What’s that? LOL
Right? I'm a mechanic, and everyone should know Maaco is only for shitty paint-jobs that might look good for 5-10 years.. and by good I mean you're gonna have orange peel, bubbles, and cracks... but it'll still look better than complete trash! Really nice places charge 10's of thousands of dollars for this kind of work.
Wrong. Ive seen the best Maaco paint job. Over 10 years old , $2500 cdn (about $1800 usd), on a 1984 Cadillac in a Canadian Maaco near me. You could tell someone it costs $9000 and they would believe it. Super gorgeous. No imperfections. No orange peel.
I bet he takes it to Walmart for oil changes too. Classic car like that should go to a reputable independent shop who mostly does classic restoration. Also couldn’t help but notice the orange peel.
@@DEATHWISHVQ They went on about the bubbles, but the orange peel is pretty bad too. Even without the air pockets and flaking it would still be a poor quality job.
You have to wonder how long the car sat in bare unsealed Bondo and primer ? Did they even bother to drain the water and oil separators coming off the air compressor ? The orange peel was caused by too much air pressure or having the gun too close to the car while spraying . And adding fish eye eliminator to the paint would've required extra effort .
The price reflects that. Bare metal re spray would be big money. It would take days to remove and refit the trim. Sill a shame they didn’t two-pack it and give it half a chance.
We have a customer like this RIGHT NOW with a C4 Corvette. Just like this Cadillac owner, he paid $5,000 at a Maaco shop and expected a $20,000 show car finish. Just like the owner of this Cadillac, he's a tool.
You don't expect bubbles either. I'm sure if we're in the market for a Cadillac Fleetwood and the seller decides to dust a quick paint job to sell and you see bubbles forming months later after the purchase, I'm sure you'd be lookin at the seller for compensation or warranty information to get it fixed.
@peterironrope So it's costs $8000 to get a paint job that doesn't have bubbles? How do you prevent the bubbles, and how many extra hours of prep work would that take?
I just can’t seem to grasp the concept of “never judge a book by its cover” when it comes to some of these stories. I was ready to stand with this guy to the fullest until I actually clicked and heard ….. MACCO.

It looks decent enough 👌🤓 what else did he want? Even if he had taken it magically to another country, they would charge him a lot because, well it looked like trash before, all uneven... A great paintjob for that size car would cost around 15- 20 grand , not $99.95 like Earl shibe ...Maccos competitor in the day , Both these places offered fast enamel paint jobs , these are loccos from across the border that work at maccos across the country and are not the best since Macco is a production paint mill , they paint cars fast and use little masking , your tires and door handles and trim and mirrors all will have overspray on them , the paint quality is for shit ! @donjuan7597 As soon as he started backing it out of the garage that’s all I could think. Don’t get me wrong still a beautiful Caddy, but I’m not a 4dr guy.
Maaco is the first problem. $3500. for body work and paint for that size car was a heck of a deal. Also, there are many things that can cause this problem. Just a couple of examples that I've experienced over the years are... Waxing the car too soon or using a fast drying clear coat. If the finish gets sealed off too soon it can't breathe and that definitely will create bubbles. I've seen it happen so many times. The only thing that fixes a problem like that is to strip it back down and start over. That's the very reason I've told my customers not to wax paint. If you're wanting that extra shine, use a polish instead.
There might have been some wax left on the old paint that wasn't completely removed especially if they skimped on the surface prep and didn't spend enough time sanding.
@@You_Know_The_Thing Then he should be content with the shitty fly-by-night paint job he got. If he’s not willing to spend the premium price for a perfect paint job then he has no reason to be on the news crying about it. Lol
@You_Know_The_Thing are you really saying that a 1960 Cadillac isn't a collectable car????? That statement right there automatically disqualifies your opinions from having any amount of validity.
You don’t get a classic car painted at Maaco. Their services are geared to modern cars and quick cheap paint jobs. A decent paint job on that Cadillac would cost in excess of $10k minimum. You get what you pay for, and as in any good quality work, preparation is crucial. Unless the car was completely stripped, the metalwork repaired properly and a high quality paint applied, what this man got is what to be expected. For $3500. He got a cheap paint job worth $3500
What is the difference between painting a modern car and a classic? Why would it cost more to paint an old car? Actually would have thought it would be easier, less plastic to remove or mask, bigger overall panels with less fiddly details.
As a classic car collector myself that's exactly what a $3500 paint job will look like. A "decent" quality paint job starts about $10k these days (and you don't get them from Maaco type places), if you want show quality paint that will last you're looking at $20k and up.
I once worked for a cut rate shop like this. In a good day, we'd run 12-14 cars through the line. Truth is, for an old beater of a car, truck, horse trailer, you really get your money's worth. But for a classic never go to a shop like this.
Taking a car to Maaco for a good paint job is like going to MDonalds for a 5 star Michelin dinner.Who cares if you paid $3500.00. They could charge you a million dollars. Price is irrelevant. I have had great paint jobs for less. It depends on the painters experience and supplies. Maaco hires the cheapest inexperienced painters. Once in a while you may get a good painter, but rare.

People are missing a important point it’s not the fact he went to macco that’s the problem! It’s that all the old paint bodywork from the 60s70s80s is causing the new paint not to adhere properly, most likely that car has a Lacquer paint from factory. Well a little fact about lacquer paint is that it keeps letting out fumes/gasses or also called VOCs so if you seal it off with new paint, doesn’t matter if its enamel or urethane it will trap in those gasses and since they can’t escape they will push the new material away from the surface, that car needs to be stripped to metal or close it. Then redone with modern chemicals. I and 2 other auto body guys I known will not touch a lacquer car unless you are putting lacquer back over it or going all the way down and redoing it.
I nearly busted out laughing when he said he took it to Macco. That’s the type of place you take your clapped ‘07 Honda Civic, not a classic car that you consider an “investment” 🤦♂️
Exactly it’s where I went to get a new bumper painted on a 2002 accord 😂😂😂 it was 15 years old at the time so “painted” was my expectation not painted properly
As a painter of 20 years I will say this is a classic case of you get what you pay for......I was about to feel bad untill they said he brought it to maaco lol
The only way to fix that is to remove all the paint right down to the metal. It’s a major job. Repainting it won’t fix it, the bubbles will simply come back.
Let me start with this, you need to completely dismantle a car like this for a restoration. Also, when you strip the paint from a vehicle, you bring it down to bare metal. You need to apply epoxy primer or something similar for corrosion protection so things like this don’t happen. Then you perform your body work then prime it, block it out straight, then refinish. Since they kept the old paint finish on the car and painted over that, the bubbles were bound to happen. The bubbles are the two paint jobs causing a chemical reaction along with adhesion issues that results in the bubbles. The techs at that shop aren’t trained on classic car restoration. Long story short, you get what you pay for when going to Maaco. Go to a real restoration shop where you will pay upwards of 60K plus to do that car right. End of story.
Yes! Strip to bare metal is the best way to go. Even new panels I get in with that EDP coating, I take that stuff off as well. I've seen slight rust under that coating. Get down to the bare foundation.
Take it to a real paint shop not the clown show known as Maaco! You get what you pay for, and this guy got exactly what he paid for! Hard lesson to learn!

I don’t know about it being a steal. But as a professional you know, while the quality of the paint, & the skill of the painter are important. The prep work is paramount. Otherwise, is like putting lipstick on a pig.

I've been painting cars for years and this is caused by them not degreasing the car. On the original paint job they probably didn't wipe the car down with wax and grease remover, and sanded some oil into the old paint. When you spray paint over an oily spot, it won't stick and will bubble up.
There are a few other possibilities though. One of the big ones is, not letting their filler and/or primer cure enough, so its releasing solvents underneath a dried surface. The other one that comes to mind is, getting body filler wet through wet sanding or washing or whatever.
I had my 1976 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible painted at my local Maaco and I was shocked at the quality of the paint. Bingo! Minor Body work and paint isn’t rocket science, just a lot of work. Over the years I’ve gotten better, but there is a reason top paint jobs cost so much and that is many, many hours of prep labor. The paint is just the icing on the cake
@@koniko169 The main thing is to make sure ALL of your materials are compatible. I always use a 2 stage urethane paint job. It's mid range but I've shot some that looked show quality. First thing I said to myself was that this car was not taken down to the metal. I take all my cars down to there so I know what I'll be working on. I just stripped a '71 Mark III and if I charged myself for that alone it would have been 7500 bucks.
You can see on the receipt it was not stripped. Only had minor dings and rock chips repaired. You can see in the photo the old lacquer paint is still on there. NOTHING is going to bond to that. Going to Maaco and thinking that $3500 is a top of the line paint job shows a TOTAL lack of knowledge. Materials alone for a car like this easily tops $5K let alone the hundreds of hours it takes for a collector quality paint job. The real number is closer to $20-30K assuming minimal metal work. Get into expansive rust repair and panel straightening and the price can easily top $100K. Whether or not the car is worth it the labor and materials are the same. Too many complain that a certain repair is worth more than the car well those people should either accept it or get a car that is worth more. Just a harsh dose of reality.
I used to work with a panel beater. Friend of his came in and I got to talking to him about his car. Said his dad bought it new and passed it down to him. $55k in bodywork alone and I don't know if that included painting. Thing looked absolutely amazing though

Many years ago Maaco was considered poor quality and a cheap place to have a paint job, but I did it anyway. The car was a 1971 Cutlass, everwhere I went for service they couldn't resist commenting what a lousy paint job. Well it all ended when I washed it off in sheets at the car wash a year later. I then had a quality body shop do it
I did my automotive paint apprenticeship at Maaco in Burnaby, BC, in the late 70”s. I would paint 10 completes and 2 spot repairs a day for 2 years straight. When I got my papers I quit and went to a more quality type shop. Maaco is for beaters. But boy could I lay down a nice acrylic enamel! Good luck with that Caddy Cheapo, cause its got to be stripped to bare metal! Your Chauffuer, J Bruce, Hollywood North 🇨🇦
If you're going to get into the auto restoration hobby my advice is do as much as you can. Bodywork is 85% of the project and it's not that hard (it's dirty and time consuming though). If you do the stuff that no one wants to do and do it right you won't have a problem. Talk to other hobbyists and see who they would trust to paint their car. I've been selling auto refinish supplies for over 30 yrs and if you use the products properly you will get good results. The issue looks like poor surface prep and a sealer issue. The only way to fix it would be to strip the car and start from scratch
Maico garden grove did same thing to my corvette-had to pay cash first-no receipt- owner said it was because of “Bondo” a lie - car never had bondo repairs -they even painted over my acrylic see through roof! Have had car forty years been painted twice before- both times good job!! 0:15

I own a restoration shop, for $3500 I would not even be able to strip the car to bare metal. In the photos, it was not stripped, that is why there are paint issues. The old paint is a bad foundation, just like you would never build a house on a bad foundation, you should never paint over an old substrate. To do that car right it should be more like $35,000, not $3,500! The man got EXACTLY what he paid for, GARBAGE!
@@dmjsra04 Obviously you can't read!
This is NOT the place you take a classic car looking for quality work. lol

And he got an economy refinish.
The Legal Problem for Maaco, is going to be in defending Their Warrantee, It's Too Ambiguous.
Price means nothing in this case. This car was painted with too much moisture in the air, or the car was never fully dried after wet sanding. Moisture under the paint has nowhere to go and will start lifting the paint as it dries and vaporizes. Tough and expensive job to fix correctly at this point.
Maaco..is for ordinary cars..never for classics..but .just bad luck.
Maaco should have told him modern poly paint won't stick to lacquer underneath.
Exactly he got what he paid for, which wasn't much.

Not an automotive painter and had that suspicion . Glad I ran into your comment 👍
Old paint conflicting chemically with modern finishes. Doing this correctly would have tripled the price very easily.

Finger print grease and bad prep
Good advice, thanks!

The only way to fix that is to remove all the paint right down to the metal. It’s a major job. Repainting it won’t fix it, the bubbles will simply come back.
... and it will cost way more than $3,500.

From a collision repair tech to another this is 100% true macco makes other professionals look bad
60 grand? Hell no, I will take my car to Maaco. I can buy 2 new cars for that money.
Exactly. Probably original enamel paint that reacted with the new paints solvents.

Like i said a paint job especially with body work like that would be 15-20$ or more. Paint and supplied could easily exceed 2000$ pretty quickly.
I see a lot of body work was needed on that car, too much filler on the panels, but what did he expect macco isnt a restoration shop.
He paid 3500$, thats a steal!
@port nut well for that amt of money they are not going to eet sand and buff it out, I really doubt they are using 800$ dv1 spray guns at macco lol
I don’t know about it being a steal. But as a professional you know, while the quality of the paint, & the skill of the painter are important. The prep work is paramount. Otherwise, is like putting lipstick on a pig.

I had a Maaco paint job done in the 80's. It was around $150 bucks back then. Sure enough, a couple years later it was flaking off. I didn't expect much though and it was probably worth what I paid just to make the old Datsun presentable.
My sister had her VW bug painted at Earl Scheib 29.99 special back in the 60's, she counted 367 runs in the paint, and they even painted the door handles!
@@jaya.0069 haha, forgot about Earl Scheib. I can hear his commercial in my head "I will paint any car for just $29.95". Painted the door handles for no extra charge, that's great.

I've been painting cars for years and this is caused by them not degreasing the car. On the original paint job they probably didn't wipe the car down with wax and grease remover, and sanded some oil into the old paint. When you spray paint over an oily spot, it won't stick and will bubble up.
Good point.
I thought that would cause "fish eyes" not bubbling.
The original paint is chemically conflicting with the new paint
But, it won't squeak, either.
It was painted and clear coated for $1,500 dollars and you would think it was a $10,000 paint job. The manager was into old cars and he told me he took extra care in painting my car. I guess it depends on where you go and who is doing the job.
Sometimes you get lucky.
The painter would have done more than what he was paid to do definitely lucky and they would have lost money doing it
How did this guy not know that Maaco has the worst reputation in the world for painting cars. You don't take your classic car to Maaco for paint.....duhhhh. To paint a car like his with a quality job, ur looking at $8,000 to $10,000....not $3500 for body work & paint ?????
This is laughable!! If you want a quality paint job on a classic car you certainly don't take it to Maaco.
This reminds me of a guy I used to work with. Him and a few of his buddies bought a race horse for $900 and then wondered why they never won any races. Get what you pay for.
They bought Mr. Ed for a race horse? That should have been a safe bet.

I use to work at a Macco they were crooked. If you didn’t pay too dollar they wouldn’t use certain grit paper to sand. Also the really cheap jobs they would just have us scuff the clear coat with a scotch brite pad and then paint it. But the dude painting them was legit on the spectrum. They were really just downright crooked.
That is a killer paint job for 3500 bucks. It’s not a show car. If you want a show car paint job expect to pay 3-4x that amount. This dude has a beautiful looking driver there and in my opinion for 3,500 he got a deal
Killer? The orange peel alone is atrocious.
Take it to Mexican shop, they have some of the best paint on lowriders.
I agree.. the paint is bad but considering what he paid it looks fine
For a show paint job it’s at least 10x that. Glass out, engine out trim off. It’s hundreds of hours of labor alone
the peel will probably buff out and the bubbles is employee error
The owner of that car belongs in jail for taking a classic to Maaco for a paint job 💀

Haha I have a similar memory
I used to paint houses with someone, and his work van had a bunch of rust between his door and running boards. So scraped off the rust, put some rubber molding on with some adhesive caulking, then we painted it white with our trim paint lol. Lol after seeing like 2 youtube videos on it im ready to paint my cargo van. Currently it has a ton of damage from previous owners vinyl wrap. Melted weather stripping on windshield. Chisel marks going down to the metal all along edges of the car. Absolutely cracked and extemely chipped hood. Literally spray painting it with mailbox paint would make it look better. Lol anyways back to my question for you. Im not wanting a clear coat that will faill in a year or 2. I also dont think i need a 10 year clear coat. What is a solid clear coat to use that will leave a good finish and is cost effective. Or is the gap between mid quality and high quality small enough that it would be worth it to get the best clear coat. From the vides ive seen the people are usually saying “im using this because i have it on hand but i do t recommend using this clear coat as it lays down like crap and has other issues”
I do my painting myself on a classic car they charge 10,000 plus . I take pride in my prep work
Bingo! Minor Body work and paint isn’t rocket science, just a lot of work. Over the years I’ve gotten better, but there is a reason top paint jobs cost so much and that is many, many hours of prep labor. The paint is just the icing on the cake
@@alfavulcan4518 Absolutely! Hours of prep is where the quality shows.
@@koniko169 The main thing is to make sure ALL of your materials are compatible. I always use a 2 stage urethane paint job. It's mid range but I've shot some that looked show quality. Hours and hours of prep work is key and always shoot a guide coat to find minor flaws. It's tedious but sooo worth it.
Like complaining to Burger King for not delivering a ground sirloin meat burger in my order. What a guy.
"Where the paint has "went" on there." That speaks volumes of this guy's intelligence. He got what he paid for! $3,500 for stripping, sheet metal work, priming and repainting? Hello? Anybody home there? Surely not! You man are a true Chuckle head!
It has to be stripped to bare metal. I refuse any paint job pre 1995 who refuse to have it striped for this very reason. This is how it will end up.
@@SOLDOZER exactly. that lacquer has to be taken all the way off.
For only 3500 I'd say that looks pretty darn good.

I'll do it myself before I pay that.
Bubbles everywhere..you must be joking
It's a cheap paint job from Maaco. I don't know what this guy expects, but you get what you pay for.
Why would you take it to Maaco?
Cause he’s a cheapskate
Top of the line? There’s bubble everywhere..you guys are nuts
U know it 2! I’ve been doing this 4 50 years! In the 70’s, I charged $500 for top of the line paint job! I wouldn’t touch that Caddy for less than $30,000 2day! 👌❤️
lol, people who over pay for old cars can afford to over pay for a paint job, who cares.
That’s the best Maaco paint job I’ve ever seen.
$3500.00 is very cheap. You don't take a classic car to Maco. It was the bodywork under the paint that's the problem.
Seriously? They're gonna wonder why he got a bad paint job at Maaco? Maaco is known as the poor mans paint job. Its almost understood in the industry thats what you get and everyone understands thats what Maaco is for.
Used car dealers and car flippers use maaco.
35000 for a paint job?!
@@dmjsra04 Obviously you can't read! Maaco just painted over the old junk paint, that is why there are problems. $35K includes stripping all the old material, properly removing all the trim and reinstalling, fixing all the dents and rust, and putting quality fillers and primers on the car to make it arrow straight. You do all that so that you don't have paint issues. None of this did Maaco do. Plus, sanding and buffing the car to a mirror finish, so yes, $35K! You sir, live in a dream world!
@@68pongto I’m living in a dream world and you’re charging 35k for that. Get real. Lol.
