This is Russ, as I sat in the hospital for a couple days, I replayed everything in my head hundreds of times, things that I should have noticed as a warning, and what I could have done differently. I’ve seen lots of comments so I’ll address a few of them, not being defensive at all. In a normal car throttle sticking at 2200 RPM’s is not the end of the world, in my car that’s 900 ft/lbs of torque. I should have realized the load that was putting on the brakes. Didn’t cross my mind at the time. FYI: It had double springs on the throttle. In a normal car, I could have pulled emergency brake, I even got a quote at Good Guy’s Del Mar for an electronic e-brake & bigger brakes. Hindsight’s 20-20, I was just gonna trailer it to a few shows & not drive it much till I could do that. Why didn’t I downshift? Car had a B&M ratchet shifter, once I shifted up thru the gears you can’t downshift till you put it in park. So much going on in those last few seconds, forgot to downshift it after putting it in park, but it was probably too late to have had a big reduction in speed. As far as I know, driver of van was not seriously injured. Beauty of a modern car with crumple zones, self tightening seat belts & air bags. Car had liability coverage but no collision, I was still in the process of getting stated value insurance A

Someone who has worked as both a Tech and an Advisor, it blows my mind how little people think about brakes and tires. No matter if your vehicle makes 10 horsepower or 10,000hp, you need to be able to turn and stop. The fact that this gets overlooked on performance builds is just scary.

As an engineer who worked for Wilwood brakes for many years and spent countless hours working with high performance stopping systems I can say one thing with no hesitation. Just because you can afford to do something doesn't mean you should if you don't know what you're doing. There is more to braking than just changing out brake pads and fluid. Braking is arguably THE most important system in any motor vehicle. This kind of reminds me of the guy with the homemade submarine that imploded recently.
What a pile of s**t!!! Driving a car with a throttle that is sticking n causing break issues? Could've killed someone. Thanks for posting the video to show what to NEVER do!
Completely irresponsible and negligent to spend 23 years building such a powerful car and not take ONE single second to think "Maybe i should get better brakes"
tbh its the same with all these so called car/bike people. they spend thousands on modifiying there cars and bikes but brakes and tyres are the only thing they dont change.
When I was a kid, the man that taught me so much about building cars, always told me to build my brakes to twice as much as I would ever need. He said if I didn't build my engine enough, I would just drive slower, thats it. But no one ever got hurt by stopping better. Plus, I have never built a street car without an E-brake, that is just foolish.
@@Charcoalgreyhoe00 If it's a show car that has underperforming brakes it should have never been on the road unless turned off. This build is the perfect example of doing everything wrong: Taking a high performance vehicle with a known sticky throttle onto a public in-use road, having severely underperforming brakes, having a roll cage but only having lap belts instead of a 5+ point harness, No helmet on either driver or passenger, and clearly no experience of what to do in the event of an accident in a high performance vehicle (going limp while putting your arms into an X pattern on your chest). You forgot that with all these problems, he's going 50+ MPH in traffic up close to an intersection , where moderately hard successful braking is all that saves an accident. The late time he started braking was particularly alarming

This isn't an "accident". An accident is something that happens due to unforeseen events outside anyone's control. Key word - "anyone". This applies ONLY to the occupant/s of the Honda SUV in this case. Ensuring your 1300hp street machine has properly functioning brakes and a throttle that doesn't stick then going out for a drive knowing full well that is not the case in your fucking 1300hp street machine anyway IS NOT outside anyone's control. It was a deliberate decision made in full knowledge of the car being in sub-par condition for the road. And that is 100% negligence, pure and simple.
This is a mishap. Not an accident. Multiple bad decisions caused this to happen. I feel for the van driver minding his own business when he was attacked by bad judgment.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on this car but no upgraded braking system. Its not all about horse power. Safety should be the first priority. Lessons to be learnt. Good thing everybody has recovered.
There is no way brakes overheat that fast. Or did they keep the original decade old shit brakes on it? Modern brakes for normal road cars can easily do a 100-0 like 6 times in a row before they start to fade. Seems like they just messed up installing them.
Imagine sitting with your family at a stoplight and two divorced dads come flying through your trunk. Then they make a video letting everyone know the car is ok.
A sanity check is certainly required. There are extremely expensive sports cars out there, which are engineered to harness large amounts of power and very few of them have a power output approaching 1300 HP. Half of that power would be too much for a car without ABS, traction control and 4WD. This vehicle doesn't even have airbags or a modern crumple zone, it is a stupid car.
I couldn't care less about the car and I'm glad the driver and passenger are ok, but the fact that the people on the car you crashed into didn't even get a mention on this video tells me everything I need to know. Also, a car build with so much time, money and work spent like this one, and you couldn't even think of adding a killswitch...and a proper seatbelts too for that matter. Well, i hope you learned something now.

I was surprised too! I just assumed that would be a big part of the conversation. I saw that Russ put it in a comment that was pinned. He said "As far as I know no one was seriously injured. Beauty of modern cars with crumple zones, self tightening seat belts, and air bags" I mean, OK, but as far as you know? So you don't actually know then? And seriously injured? Does that mean they were injured, just not in critical condition in a coma somewhere?
My suv sped up all on it's own, I was going 85 mph with the brakes on. What fun. I was on an interstate so I was able to maneuver around slower cars, I shifted into neutral pumped the gas a bit, put my car back into drive. Which I'm sure wasn't great for the transmission. I drove home with out any further incidents, except for a few more gray hairs. I had it repaired the next day, it was a transmission sensor thing, which went wrong and made my car think I was flooring it, which I wasn't - with my foot on the brakes. Stupid computer chips in cars.
What an absolute cluster. If you ever have a car with a sticking throttle pull over and fix it. DO NOT keep driving to the point of boiling the brake fluid and plowing into stopped traffic.

I was in the middle back seat, with a fastened seatbelt which unfortunately wasn’t a modern one for the middle passenger, as it was actually a lap belt only. The oncoming driver was overtaking a lorry in the corner itself, literally no visibility whatsoever and of course over a solid line. My das was doing around 70-80 km/h. Last thing I saw was both of the head on vehicles in front of my eyes and after that just that disgusting smell of a car crash (if you experienced one you know what I’m talking about) and me barely climbing out of the car with a broken pelvis. Hearing Russ yell "no brakes" took me back 10 years ago when the same thing happened to me going down a hill road I said to my father sitting in the back " no brakes" I started pumping the brakes with no effect then I tensed my body on the steering wheel like Russ did when I saw that sharp curve at the end of the hill, I went flying off the road landing hard in a ditch. I broke my back and my father broke the femur in two places, he recover eventually but I was left paralyzed in a wheelchair for life. So yes I agree 100% with what you said, do whatever t takes to maintain those brakes in perfect working condition.
Man that is shit. With all the innovations in medical science these days it may be possible that you'll walk again. That would be great. Glad your dad recovered eventually. All the very best, Dave.
I'm just so confused at this. How the hell does a car with 1300hp not have a kill switch? On top of that, the throttle is sticking and you're boiling the brakes the whole ride....how long did you think they would last? I guess it just goes to show, experienced builder in no way equates experienced driver. No real driver would ever even consider driving a car like that, with shit brakes.
You see stuff like this all the time. There was a fatal accident where driver lost control of a 54 Chevy with an LS swapped into what looked like stock wheels, tires, suspension, and brakes. No way the old chassis built for the straight six could handle the horsepower and torque of Corvette engine. ruclips.net/video/qy_TF-z7kQs/видео.html
@@MrJeffcoley1 Jesus Christ. It's crazy because, if you talk to any track driver, even the most amateur driver (I'm barely above that 🤣), the thing they probably beg for more of is better and better brakes. Right next to better tires. I won't even put cheap tires on my daily driver.

I was in a armored truck at a red light when someone ran into from behind at 50mph it fractured my spine just think about being in a minivan my heart go's out to who ever was in that minivan
Yeah your armored truck is likely worse than a modern commuter car like a mini van. Its built to be solid, and... well, armored. They have big steel bumpers etc. That's great for protecting the vehicle, and the money inside maybe, but there are no crumple zones for energy to be absorbed and dissipated into the vehicle itself rather than your body inside. You have your weight and size, but even a small vehicle traveling 50mph is carrying a butt-load of energy and it has go somewhere.
When your vehicle can't yield and direct the force away from the cabin, the force ends up going into... well, you. You know that physics toy with the row of metal balls on strings, where you lift the ball on the end and let it hit the stack, only to see the ball on the other end go flying, with the middle balls all not moving? Well, in a crash, the other car is the first metal ball, and you're the one at the other end that all the force gets transferred to. With a modern car designed to crumple, it would be like replacing the middle balls with a soft spring.
@@startingtech3900As a former Honda Odyssey owner, I second that. Not the coolest or most reliable, but it saved my ass when I was rear ended just like in this vid. I was at a stop light. Light turns green and as I was about to lift my foot off the brake, I see headlights in my rear view mirror…. it’s obvious they are not gonna stop. BAM! Drunk driver hits me… My seat completely breaks backward….. I’m layed out flat and van screeches to a stop at the other side of the intersection. (Back tires locked up from being compressed in the crumpled up steel) Witnesses say they saw no brake lights from his truck (Nissan pickup) and estimate speed at 45. Driver and passenger of pickup go to hospital, driver for shoulder, I think, and passenger for pealed back scalp/head injury. He made a hole in windshield with his head I could put my fist through. Driver ends up in prison as multiple offender and this time with an injury accident. I go home and fly to Vegas for training the next day. I only had a sore left forearm. I think I must’ve hit it on the steering wheel as I was thrown back…. And my stomach ached like I had done a bunch of sit-ups. Side note: I couldn’t find my phone to call 911. I had it in a pocket at the side of my leg (painter pants…. kinda in at the time, 😂) I found it all the way in the back of the van. It’s crazy how hard the impact is in an accident…. Even at only 45mph.
The only one I feel sorry for in this situation is the minivan driver/passengers. Two "car guys" driving around in a car that is knowingly having issues but continuing to drive was completely irresponsible. This wasn't a brake issue, it was a hanging throttle that caused severe brake fade, and you guys drove the car like that knowingly instead of stopping and fixing the issue.
Idling high, riding the brakes, smelling it and having too much faith in the braking system with too much ego with the video being recorded, a combination of things led to this and could have been easily prevented. Hopefully you all are ok.
What irks me is that the minivan has a car seat for a child in the back of it. You can see it from the shots they took. That's highly disturbing. Hopefully that baby wasn't in there.
This won't sound right but at least it failed like this and not at power or around a fairground atmosphere. Injured children or worse would never leave your mind
@@tylerburks6871 He immediately knew it was idling high because he was riding the brakes, but still chose to make little pulls in traffic. Hindsight is 20/20 but pushing boundaries will cause eventual unforeseen problems. We all know the risks.
I remember reading issues of Hot Rod magazine back in the junior high school library (1973). They had an article about building your first street rod. I think the first paragraph said something like "stopping is more important than going fast" and to not cut corners on brakes, seatbelts and safety items. Budget that first then put the rest in the motor and drivetrain. I never forgot that and never neglected to have the brakes on my cars checked, serviced and repaired as soon as something seemed off. I remember riding in the back of my uncle's '53 Chevy pickup with my mom driving around town. The brakes went out completely and she started honking the horn, down shifted, swung a sharp right rather than run the red light than she hit the curb and rode it a few feet until the truck stopped. Scared the crap out of all of us but she handled it better than this guy. She taught me not to drive faster than the flow of traffic or ever slower in the truck that I eventually inherited. Never neglected the brakes but when I sold it a couple of years ago I told the guy to upgrade the brakes for modern driving if he planned on making it a daily driver or before he decides on installing a V8. He's kept is stock but he never drives it. Would have been nice if you told us how the people in the mini van were doing. Maybe the lawyers told you not to discuss it. I was rear ended by a drunk driver. I had a broken back and a fractured shoulder after flying off my motorcycle and going through his windshield. He hit the brakes and I flew forward and broke my shoulder. To add insult to injury he drove off. Luckily a cop was doing paperwork at the 7-11 and he caught the guy. Think of others not just yourself before you get on the road in a fancy but faulty car.
I stopped reading pretty early on. The brakes were perfect here. He tired to use them in a way they were not designed for. The end. Just because the headline says "BRAKE FAILURE" that does not mean it is correct.
According to Big Red Car Russ he said something like $230,000 and 3 wives. I get the feeling the wives had more pertinent reasons for leaving. Call it a hunch.

At least know what you're talking about before posting nonsense. While the mechanical handbrake certainly can and should be used while parking, it was absolutely designed as an emergency brake; at a time when most automobiles could only be stopped by the gears in the transmission. In the event of hydraulic brake failure, the parking brake can be used to slow/stop the vehicle. I've had several occasions, as an instructor, where I had to yank the emergency brake to stop a vehicle because the driver panicked and didn't brake. It's never failed me in its intended purpose. @@2nickles647

It is best to assume 9 of every 10 cars around you are crazy people on hard drugs. When a light turns green I never blindly go. I look both ways twice and then go. Twice over 20 years I avoided being t boned from cars that blew right threw the red light they had.. I also regularly check rear view mirror for fast upcoming cars. People pass out and fall asleep. Or drive 1200 hp cars with old breaks. A couple times I changed lanes and avoided being rear ended. Practicing looking out can literally save your ass.

68 year old, lifetime Mercury man, drive my 1966 Mercury Comet. First off, this tears my heart out to see that gorgeous, blown red '64 demolished. Yes. With the unibody, there's no restoring it. It also made me sad to hear about the Chevy under the hood. My Comet has a bit of fading after market front disc's with drums in the rear. I need to upgrade. I am curious if the red Comet had a dual chamber master cylinder. Also, I didn't see him shifting to L LOW gear knowing it's an automatic. I am glad you both survived.😢

When I was watching the beginning of the vid and he panned to the front wheel I thought 'Damn those rotors are puny!' Even by the standards of 17 years ago those were SMALL..
I remember in High School auto mechanics learning about how brake fluid can overheat / boil if you ride the brakes too much. Boiling brake fluid equals lost hydraulic pressure and no brakes.
The graphic warning is for the video in the cabin where you can actually see them get hurt, like his arms going reverse and the passenger smashing his face, obviously.
I thought the same thing, but it gets more graphic as it goes. Crazy video, from so many angles, you don't usually see that much coverage in a street accident
You know what really sucks? Not once did you mention the health and well-being of the poor person that you ran into. I can see why he's afraid to take that car on a drag strip. He has no clue how to drive.
OMG that's exactly what I was thinking. Innocent ppl on the road not knowing the danger that's on its way because of reckless people that ignore all the signs not to drive that car or not to continue to drive it.
@ Steve Smith Yeah that bothers me too. They didn't mention anything about the MINI VAN they hit. I mean it looks like there weren't kids in it but not a mention of their condition is kind of heartless. It was their fault all the way and probably shouldn't have been driving that car with the issues it was having. Brakes smelling sticky throttle? The accelerator sticks, and the brakes haven't been upgraded in 17 years. After hearing that, I would not have gotten into the car. Sounds like this poor car had a bad mechanic working on it. Some people are too proud to admit they are not skilled enough to build a car properly.

Doesn't really matter how old the brakes are, a 1964 Comet stopped with 4 drum brakes just fine. What the issue was is the fact that he's completely braindead, riding the brakes for a couple miles because it's idling above the rpm he wishes to idle at, making probably 500+ftlbs.

Brakes would still be working fine and 20 years of hard work not gone down the drain, not to mention those that may be feeling this incident for the next 20.
I think the final sign was when they blasted that dude from behind can't believe they didn't stop before that
Well, nothing can fix stupid I guess.

On top of that, the throttle is sticking and you're boiling the brakes the whole ride....how long did you think they would last? I guess it just goes to show, experienced builder in no way equates experienced driver. No real driver would ever even consider driving a car like that, with shit brakes.

You have your weight and size, but even a small vehicle traveling 50mph is carrying a butt-load of energy and it has go somewhere.
thankfully honda minivan super safe

Those brakes were totally inadequate for the power anyway, that was obvious from the start. The guy is a clown.

@Thoth Al Khem still had no brakes. Could’ve been easily prevented had the car been gone through before driving though.

@@2nickles647 parking break is an emergency break.
