- Decided to take out my DPF and flush it out and unblock it. I was getting the dreaded DPF warning light on my car for a while - I later learn that this DPF warning light is triggered once you've gone over 250000km. I go through the process of resetting the BMW cars computer so that it now behaves as if a new DPF was installed.
I just want to thank you. I can't believe it actually worked. Just reset on my f30 . Got me so down and I watched this. Gave me a bit of hope . Done alot of digging and managed. Thanks to you sir.
Update since doing this now 2 years ago - car has been running fine ever since, no issues and has sailed through 2 MOTs

The DPF reset reminded me of a funny problem I got on my previous E90. When the reverse ligth went out, and I didn't replace it, it started counting down from each time I started the car (I think) and eventually it cut the power to the reverse light. I didn't realise it was cut until I was going to install a backup camera. Took me a long time to find the cause, but one day a RUclips video was recomended and it showed how to reset this using ISTA.

Hi, great video on how to use the software for bmw owners. On the cleaning of the dpf, it's a bit more than 'dense material' in there. It's a matrix that will need cleaning with more than just water on a 150,000 mile vehicle, best way is to use hydrochloric acid 16% mixed with water 2:1, soak for a couple of hours and thoroughly rinse with fresh water. Water should run straight through the unit afterward (you will have no chance to blow it out, it will be gone before you pick the airline up!), then dry before putting back. This way is as good as you can get it to new. Pressure washing, pressure blasting, setting fire to the dpf, will all damage it! Looks like this unit is also a catalytic converter?
Thanks for the advice! Next time I do this I'll certainly be giving that a try! Agreed pressure washing directly seemed a bit too aggressive and too much risk for causing damage. When I spoke to a specialist company I called out to check out my car they were insisting that the ash accumulation could not be dissolved or removed chemically and had to be physically removed - I think their method was similar to what you've just suggested was to use a mixture of acid and water to dislodge built up ash which then makes it much easier to remove with water.

It's only ceramic filter. Like porcelain. Which is temperature treated. You can fill it up with Pepsi or Coca-Cola plug on one end and leave it standing for 48 hours you'll see it will be nice and clean. You can try strong vinegar, pool cleaner, many things will clean it.

Glad i found this video, my 520d f10 n47 engine just been in for egr recall, garage noted "low life of dpf" car is on nearly 150k miles, so in another 5k miles i'm expecting warning lights to go off and have to do this, so thanks
Glad you found it useful! I imagine the garage saw the 00452A code which is the ‘Info - particulate filter system’ warning - I had the same on my car until the 250K was exceeded. Then it came up with 004D4A which also throws up the DPF warning on the dash
Great video I have got the dpf warning light comes on 10 mins into a run( x5 e70diesel) and then goes out again , car was on 162,000 milesk when it started , think it is the same dpf end of life counter you mention.Need codes read to confirm but driving 100%
Thanks for the video. So you don’t recommend replacing it with a new one? I’ve called several auto shops and some say to replace it altogether because it will fail eventually. Like you said it’s a lot less expensive to clean than replace. Thanks.

That's great! So regarding the ash cleaning and that, I've always kept things clean by running the engine hard for a prolonged period of time to burn off contaminants. Is that not doable on this filter type, will it need dismantling regardless of how you drive it do you think?
As far as I'm aware, doing that only burns off the soot accumulation. The burned off soot gets turned into ash, and then over time it's the ash that clogs up the DPF.

Hey, great info. I've got a question. I have an e84 2.0d and I've got to replace the flex pipe on the exhaust, which requires removing the dpf to weld it, so I'm thinking it might be worth giving the dpf a wash while I'm at it. I don't have any issues or codes, just a preventative measure. Do you think removing the dpf, unplugging the sensors etc and putting it back will throw any codes once I start the car? I don't have the obd software.

I had the same problem on my e90 and cut the exhaust and removed the dpf internals but later just replaced it with a new dpf Then on my 318d f30 i got a large drill and punched seveal holes in the dpf honey cone and some times the engine management light comes on but goes out when i put shell fuel in

Excellent video thanks for uploading .....I use an autel AP200 and you can do this on your mobile phone. £50. to buy.....I've done 110K in my 520d and notice in the fault codes there is a permanent code there for information saying limited remaining distance available. Am I right in saying that I should have in the region of 40K before I get a dashboard alarm about the DPF?
Thanks for the info buddy - the number I saw in the ISTA software was 250k - but I cannot say if that’s just for the 320d but it was definitely a hard preset number - my guess is if youve done 110k then you’ve got around 140k before you get a DPF warning of any kind but as I say this could be just unique to the 3 series…
I was talking in miles. So 110k miles done. Converting kilometres to miles it should give me another 40k miles before fault arises on dashboard. I will find out if the limit applies to an f11 lci. Thanks for the reply.

Done 200k drives reset all codes at every opportunity even logged the egr and cat banks peaking 324° from 280ish average but that's when it pops an error
Egr going 0 at burn off so I think it's doing what it should or at least attempting to
I will confirm, just rinsing the dpf will fix the problem. don't waste your money buying silly chemicals and driving like a maniac. cleaning it or replacing is the only way to fix problem. I use carly to clear codes. Works on a BMW X1. dry dpf for a day or two. sometimes you might need a sensor, the exhaust pressure sensor to be exact. $80 part. that's it.

Hi, I brought my DPF to a company that cleaning professionally with machine. Do I need now to reset the DPF or I can continue driving without this procedure? The computer shows there are 29,000 miles remaining distance.
You must reset the dpf counter, otherwise the ecu will not know it has been cleaned. You need to tell the ecu is has a new dpf, counter will then be set for another 250k km

Its drove on only short journeys. Never has a blast on motorway. Do you think a good blast would clear through before i go down this route. Mine is the same car but touring version. Thank you
Hey buddy - what's the total mileage of your car? Sadly I discovered BMW thought it necessary to throw up this warning when the car had exceeded 250000 KM regardless of the condition of the DPF. It's like a hard coded counter that is programmed to throw up a warning whenever the mileage has gone over a pre-programmed limit
@@MrScififan hi its done 149,000 miles. However i had a new egr valve fitted around 4 month ago ish and ever since that was fitted this light kerps coming up.
I turn off code with cheap odb2 reader but comes back on. Do you think it could be poorly fitted egr valve or faulty from new. Ir actually the dpf. A local re mapping service online has said the dpf can be removed and and re mapped. Is this an option. Im not a mechanic so nit sure what to do. Thank you

joey jones No need to remove engine Mount - DPF is bolted onto engine bracket - fairly easy to remove
I have a 335d, I had to remove the engine bracket. I didn't want to but it made removal much easier.

Ah my bad - it comes off fairly easily once you’ve undone the 3 bolts holding it to the engine mount at the bottom - there’s a single clamp holding the top pipe to the exhaust manifold, then a clamp holding the bottom pipe to the exhaust system (my clamp was rusted solid so had to cut it off which took the majority of the time)

It was an eBay purchase, search for ISTA+ / ISTA-D
You can download it for free, google ista+ rheingold, join a bmw forum and you can download it for free.
ISTA is free you shouldn't have paid for it
If you're going to empty the DPF soot onto the ground anyway, why not just remove it, and let the smoke come out of the exhaust? 🤷♂️ They're literally ending up in the same place, and, you'd get better fuel economy without it?
In the UK if a DPF is factory fitted, you can't remove it's guts as it won't pass an MOT (legal requirement to drive on the road)

It definitely will pass an not but you’ll get slapped with a thousand pound fine if you get caught
Agree with the previous comments - here in the UK if DPF is removed and MOT fails you could be in for a nasty fine
I agree with all the comments. My point is, the DPF is to stop the carbon going into the environment. This video washes the filter and the carbon-water goes straight into the ground... Kinda pointless, as the carbon ended exactly where it would have! 😂

Should've used throttle body cleaner. You'll have to spray 2 or 3 cans of throttle body cleaner. Final stage is to use boiling water.

But what is the cause of dpf fail? Lack of driving or not enough drive on long journeys
Not enough long journeys basically, you can buy the apps and adapter and do your long journey when is needed by looking at percentage of soot/ash in filter.
