My interpretation is a tiny bit of spirituality sprinkled in with a whole lot of science along with a sense of wonder and awe.
@quakers200 yes. With a bit of Einsteins philosophy mixed in. The cool thing about pantheism is that it's open to interpretation. It's kind of like the Baskin-Robbins of religion and philosophy. @@BooboosANDBloodshed_95 That sounds ridiculous. If one can choose their own interpretation and mix and match their beliefs with other belief systems, how do you know what the truth is? How can eleven different interpretations all be true?
The only college I’ve ever been to is Community college but I don’t believe there is any being listening to pray. I was raised in Catholic school but there came a time when I was a young adult that I started to question everything. I think absent of college in my life I’ve always been a critical thinker and have an enormous curiosity about almost everything.
I’m not religious but I believe in God through my life’s observations. I am aware of God but I most people who follow and trust religious leaders are closer to God than me.
God is nature and energy,, yes I believe in God. I still go by the song in the 60’s I don’t believe in heaven and I pray there ain’t to hell! But there will be one child born to carry on. Carry on!
I've never been religious, but, when I was a mature student (2009-13) graduating with a 2:1 in Computer Security & Forensics, we had a module on critical thinking - that put the final nail in the coffin of religious belief for me. I do still go to church, due to an article in New Scientist in the UK which reported on a study that found people who go to church (whether or not they believe) are happier and live longer than those who don't.
Add in the Easter bunny, the tooth fairy, guardian angels, all instilled into children by adults as “innocent” well meaning lies until the children sus out the truth and everyone moves on with no damage done except for quite a few upset and disappointed children. As you say though, God (and Jesus) get by somehow with the adults maintaining the fallacy and never challenging or reasoning about the truth. Then the children become adults and have their own children and so the cycle continues unbroken. Only those with the ability or desire to seek the truth and challenge the whole concept of a Deity in the sky who created everything in the universe but focussed its attention on one tiny planet orbiting a small star out of 300 billion in one galaxy out of 300 billion galaxies in the observable universe.
But we can. I did. Funnily enough my 1st questioning about what I was taught was when I was 7. About the same time I realised the truth about Santa and fairies etc.
I did as well. I'm of the opinion that it has to do with when you are taught about religion. Usually that is during your formative years, and its harder to go against what you learn during that time as its more deeply imprinted on your psyche.
Because people want to believe that they are special. That their lives have meaning and that they are here for a reason. They are afraid of dying and are comforted in the thought that they will continue to exist in an afterlife with the being that created them.
In the USA, 90% of the scientists were made religious before they became scientists, what would the number be if the scientists had not been made religious before they became scientists?
A lot of people have a bit of a insecurity in their mind and so they get comfort from having a "" father figure"" in their life. Religion gives comfort and guidance to many, just don't let it totally dominate your life.
In a college philosophy course (at my engineering school), there was one argument for believing in God. Ourr professor made a 2x2 diagram with one side as believe/don't believe and the other as God exists/doesn't exist. So, if you don't believe and there's no God, you're good. Believe and God doesn't exist, you break even as maybe you spend time in church but no end benefit. Now you believe and God does exist you're all set. The bad one is you don't believe and God does exist, you're screwed.
I was raised as a Christian, but as i got older, i started questioning it all. My ex girlfriend is a devout Christian and we had some serious conversations about God. Now I'm dating a devout Catholic woman with her beliefs, which are a little different. I am having a hard time in believing what i have not seen any evidence of, other than life itself. I want proof and not what people are telling me or what a book is telling me.
As an atheist, if I was about to be executed. Probably by some religious nut who has an issue with me not believing their nonsense. First I'd think about whether life has been good to me, considering my current situation - being executed and all - I'd be glad life isn't going to be bothering me much longer.
Nice answer but i am guessing burial without a casket that sort of makes your body available to decay is illegal. Burial at sea? Notsure how that works. Cremation for me. No casket, digging a pit rtc. Yes little energy my body has will go up literally in smoke. I like the idea of a body dumped in a special woods where the blow flies and beetles quickly take care of things but that is unlikely.
(^-^; This is an artistic proof of a created universe. When you paint a shadow it's the opposite color of the object that made the shadow. Nobody knew what the opposite color of white was so the artists avoided painting white on white. The opposite color of white is baby blue and baby pink. The first artist to figure it out was Norman Rockwell. I was the second artist to figure it out. I saw it in the corner of a white room. The lighting was perfect to see it. Pigments have different rules than light. It took them thousands of years to get all the pigments they have now.
I would not place Engineers as equivalent to the scientific community. Many are not knowledgeable about the scientific method. They may have read about it or have been taught about it, but they haven't actually practiced it. Their appreciation of the accumulated scientific knowledge based on the scientific method is not part of their understanding.
I would say that most - if not all of them - were brought up with religion. Fear - which is what religion thrives on - is the strongest force we feel. I do not know any scientist who is "born again".

God and the earth's religions are not the same thing. One would think Tyson is smart enough to figure that out. The Bible says, God "does not live in temples made with hands." This sets God above all the major religions on earth; including Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and the rest.
At the 40 second mark, Tyson cavalierly declares that his last wish is that his corpus provide food for the flora and fauna. This assertion to me is theatrical and dismissive of the finality of existence. I have not ever encountered this sentiment when attending several different funerals. If I were an atheist, my sentiment would best be found in the poem of Dylan Thomas, "Do not go gentle into that good night......Rage, rage against the dying of the light". This refrain is repeated 4x throughout the 19 line poem. Also, I find Shakespeare's words spoken by Macbeth to resonate more truthfully in Act V, Scene 5. " Out, out brief candle! Life is but a walking shadow - a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." If there is no God and Jesus did not die that we might live, our hope is in eternal darkness. Our expectations are bleak and grim. And I can't see how reckoning our decaying body as food for flora and fauna gives one any sort of sense of satisfaction and contentment.

You mean the “WORST” arguments against religion. Neil deGrasse Tyson assumes ALL religions are flawed. He doesn’t know about the ONE religion that believes in “worlds without number” created by an all-powerful, but loving God. He doesn’t seem to understand that the trials we experience in this life will strengthen us, and give us experience. We grow through such trials, so that when we return to our Heavenly Father, we can help His kingdom grow… and help our own kingdom grow. But Tyson thinks that an all powerful God “MUST” make our lives easy; with no trials whatsoever. Therefore, there must be no God. That’s flawed logic. He assumes he knows what God’s will must be. But he’s flat out wrong! God WANTS us to experience trials to make us stronger! Tyson is biased by his own flawed expectations.

Please opt out of your egoistic premiss that you are recompensing mother nature with a free meal of your then decomposing form that was/is and will still be God-given, God-created and the property of God, which you had nothing to do with its temporary existence.
Since the fundamental premise of science that our existence is an epiphenomenon of our still very shakily estimated laws of nature it is unsurprising that to become an elite practitioner you would not subscribe to another belief system. My disagreement with you is that you place your belief and faith in the philosophy of science on a different level than belief and faith in any other epistemological system. Science is a highly flawed and ever changing system of knowledge and requires faith on behalf of most followers as its priesthood (like you) interpret and reinterpret its esoterica for the masses. Just like religion it is vulnerable to fraud, fakers, charlatans and fringe gurus. One of the premises of science is that religion must be false and incompatible with scientific principles. One of the premises of the Christian Bible is that it will be nonsense to nonbelievers, the universe , including time is a creation “not made from things which do appear” and temporary, God is outside time and created space, and there is and alternative universe called the spiritual realm (also that science is “falsely so called”). There is no reconciling of these belief systems but I consider it arrogant and erroneous to imbue one with superior intellectual status.
So, since you have made the assertion in John 3:16, I must ask you for your "Proof." Otherwise, Hitchens' comment, "What can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence." You have made a claim; it is now "up to you" to show the evidence, or your claim/argument will be hollow.

Although I did not listen to all of Tyson's quotes in this video, I am still wondering what his actual basis for rejecting religion is. His first example, citing that 90% of people who responded to the question - Is there a God who listens to your prayers? with a Yes. And Tyson saying that that answer means you are by definition religious, is not serious. In fact, it is the opposite - mocking, dismissive. We the viewers of this video (or original audience members, if any) have no idea who he is asking this question of or under what circumstance it is being asked, etc. We do not have any idea how he comes up with this 90% number. He also betrays a definite presumption of what this so-called god is supposed to be like. For one thing, he personifies it, that is, refers to it as having a human-like nature, as if it were a big daddy in the sky. He rejects the existence of this entity based on his own presumptions. Pathetic.
You are pathetic. To believe something without any evidence is blind faith. A person has blind faith basically would not go through critical thinking, logic and even common sense
Education is the greatest force that shows people that religions are based on gods that have no basis in reality. As has been repeated many times, gods were created by man, to answer question our science didn't have the tools or background knowledge to tackle at the time. As our science knowledge grows greater, the gap that a god is required for grows smaller. As Dr Tyson pointed out, as countries education standards improve, and the people's knowledge grows, religions fades to nothing. And those countries are generally the most peaceful. Funny about that...
He is talking to rational people. That 90% is not in his audience. If you watched _Contect,_ David Drummond was the scientist who clearly did not believe in a god, but used the 90% (including many politicians _also_ pandering to the 90%) to get the result he wanted. _That_ is pathetic; Neil Degrasse Tyson does no such thing.

Personally I am a scientific pantheist. Meaning that I see the universe as its own entity and alive. Everything that happens within said universe is a product of evolution and the scientific method.

But that I mean it's like you can choose your own flavor. And it lends itself to mix and match with other belief systems.

There is something that keeps things together. Believe!
The only college I’ve ever been to is Community college but I don’t believe there is any being listening to pray. I was raised in Catholic school but there came a time when I was a young adult that I started to question everything. I think absent of college in my life I’ve always been a critical thinker and have an enormous curiosity about almost everything.
The US may have freedom of religion but one group thinks it should be the only religion.
Isn’t that funny how that works?

Yea that's more to do with being social in groups than anything else. Community, very important.
You can do the same thing by joining a gym class
If we as children can grow out of believing in Santa Claus and having imaginary friends, how is it that we can't grow out of believing in God?

God and the earth's religions are not the same thing. One would think Tyson is smart enough to figure that out. The Bible says, God "does not live in temples made with hands." This sets God above all the major religions on earth; including Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and the rest.
Technically you can’t say 7% pray to a god, just that they believe one exists.
Tyson is a Science zealot. Although science has better reality checks it is also a belief system not radically different than religions.

I didn't see any arguments against religion except when the Bible is used for natural history. Religion is a human construct and therefore is flawed. But religion is not the same as faith. Nor are spiritual experiences received by everyone. Yet for those lucky ones they lead to the best part of living. Science is only rational. Faith relies on a different way of knowing. How do you explain your love for your child...you can't do it rationally. Best to keep curious and not rule out what you can't yet understand.

Sadly at seven and a half minutes he strawmans atheists. We are not like that. Sure some are. But most of us, who use the term of atheist to describe part of what we are, just don't believe in any dieies or want to support anything that supports that belief. Neil deGrasse Tyson assumes ALL religions are flawed.
He doesn’t know about the ONE religion that believes in “worlds without number” created by an all-powerful, but loving God. He doesn’t seem to understand that the trials we experience in this life will strengthen us, and give us experience.
We grow through such trials, so that when we return to our Heavenly Father,
we can help His kingdom grow… and help our own kingdom grow.

Therefore, there must be no God. That’s flawed logic. He assumes he knows what God’s will must be.
