  • In this captivating video featuring Neil deGrasse Tyson, we tackle the intriguing concept of the "God of the Gaps" and the essential question of what, if anything, existed before the universe. Tyson challenges the notion that God serves as a mere explanation for the unknown, urging us to think critically about the implications of attributing gaps in our scientific understanding to divine intervention. Through engaging insights and compelling arguments, we explore the necessity of seeking deeper explanations that extend beyond traditional beliefs. Whether you’re a science enthusiast or a curious skeptic, join us for a thought-provoking discussion that promises to reshape your perspective on existence itself. A good scientist should be able to accept that he does not understand everything yet, there may be more to discover, he may even be wrong!
He's right, religion teaches humility, 'nature is the executor of God's laws' as Galileo said, that's why a theist has less problem, questioning overly simplistic theories like steady state or Darwinism, they are not afraid of the implications of finding more underlying complexity.

There is a big assumption in that statement. I don't know any religious person who delights in not knowing things.
I can understand every thing going on under the hood of a car, and yet I still believe the car has a designer, creator, engineers, etc. I don't look for something unexplainable as my only acceptable evidence of a designer. I once was unable to understand why the only evidence atheists will accept for God is fantasy-story magic. But now I realize I know EXACTLY why they will only accept that as evidence--so they can go on saying "There is no evidence."
A car engine is evidence of an engineer, even though I don't see the engineer plastered into his own engine. A painting is evidence of a painter. All of creation is overwhelming evidence of the Creator.

The first is the only answer that is simply rational: about the time the fetus is viable, could survive outside the uterus. About the beginning of the third trimester.
The second is when the culture says the fetus has rights of autonomy. This, naturally, is based on irrational beliefs, not any objective standard.
Religions create arbitrary morality based on irrational beliefs: that is why they disagree among themselves. It is also why the various churches actually evolve their « absolute » moralities over time: if their moralities were absolute, determined by an unchanging god, then the morality would always be the same. (E.g., All Christians accepted slavery. Now few do. All Christians accepted child marriage. Now many fewer do.)
Rational ethics, by the way, cannot prevent ethical quandaries. There will always be competing interests. But at least the quandaries are identified as such.

And also, if late term abortion is something that "never happens" as Kamala Harris recently claimed in support of abortion (despite about 10k-15k/year, most for elective reasons) why not accept limits on the practice? Most pro-abortion advocates absolutely refuse to even consider such restrictions on a practice they claim never happens.

I think the issue may be arising from your characterization of the singularity as dust. It was most certainly energy without material form. Dust came far later after the energy condensed into hydrogen and formed stars. The reason the energy condensed into hydrogen seems to be for no other reason than that’s the simplest element. Then stellar nucleosynthesis occurred forming all elements through the process of fusion. This works up to the element iron. Fusing past iron requires supernova sized stars and energy to be created. So yeah. Energy in the “beginning” expanding to “start” time and space. From where did the energy come or what is beyond this singularity we have no way of possibly knowing.

"When I look at the universe in all the ways the universe wants to kill us, I find it hard to reconcile that with statements of beneficence." As seen thru the eyes of a materialist (one who thinks reality is only made up of matter and energy) the underlying assumptions with regard to beneficence (misspelled in the video text) is one of material benefit, e.g., feeding 5000 with just a few loaves and fishes. And indeed, this has been the major focus of religions founded on the god-of-the-gaps where some deity is credited with the actions of natural forces (an assumed consciousness behind volcanoes erupting or lightening striking). Evolutionary religions were founded on attempting to influence these supposed deities thru bribery of some sort... offering up valued things or people (virgins) so as to dissuade them from wreaking havoc. But over time, there was a de-coupling of the deity concept with their original source material. Yahweh started out as a volcano god and evolved conceptually into a more generalized concept of an all powerful force/being.
Not clearly understood by most people is that there were times when celestial beings incarnated on our planet to teach us about spirituality, and about a spiritual deity, one who is unrelated to any forces of nature. As these incarnations were temporary events (Adam and Eve, Melchizedek and Jesus), their spiritual concepts got intermingled with the evolutionary religious concepts, still rooted to some degree with god-of-the-gaps thinking. Thus the distinction between material benefits and spiritual benefits is/was not particularly foremost in anyone's mind, particularly not in the mind of a materialist.
My experience of "beneficence" has been one of love, not loaves or fishes. (Although I will allow as how our Divine Father-friend may have had a hand in directing celestial beings in orchestrating my heart transplant and related events happening when they did.) Thus the harshness of the rigors of living are completely unrelated to inspired solutions to spiritual problems. That a materialist, even a brilliant one like Neil, will necessarily be blind to spiritual forms of beneficence, should be easy to understand. He has obviously not experienced the Father's Love like I have.

Disagreements/debates can be had just like every other argument in science until theories are proven. Faith can be maintained nonetheless, and science remains as well. I can understand why, if someone does not understand something, and has no scientific background or questing mind, then it is perfectly logical that they might invent a god and say"God must have done that". But what is not logical, or rational is that they then extrapolate that god concept into a god that is an intelligent entity, omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent, and an all loving personal god. That is just bizarre. There is no reason why these attributes should be applied to this god, other than people wanting their god to display these attributes because the feel more comfortable having a god like this in their lives. But wanting it so, does not make it so.

"My problem with the god of the gaps is, if you feel that way, you shouldn't be writing the science curriculum of a classroom."
My problem with that rationale is that it implies knowledge to the contrary while simultaneously disavowing such belief, so as to dishonestly eschew the need to justify the assent to the proposition. The mere act of engaging in the argument in the first place exposes the presence of a bias against the idea; and a bias _is_ belief. To pretend that one is neutral under those conditions is deceptive. If you believe that no such entity exists, own it, justify it, and quit hiding behind an "absence" of belief.

    • @lurch666
      @lurch666 День назад

Nope, it doesn't imply knowledge to the contrary.
It implies that according to current evidence we know something and what we don't know is because we don't have evidence for it.
So asserting a deity where we have no evidence for one is incorrect.
It's not saying no deities exist. It's saying there's no current evidence for any deity.
Anyone asserting that a deity exists in a gap is doing so incorrectly because they are not following the evidence.
And if you can't follow the evidence then you shouldn't be teaching.

There is evidence, and the adamant refusal to acknowledge it doesn't change that.
Evidence can take a variety of forms. For example, there is analogical evidence, anecdotal evidence, character evidence, circumstantial evidence, corroborative evidence, demonstrative evidence, digital evidence, documentary evidence, emotional evidence, empirical evidence, expert opinion evidence, forensic evidence, habit evidence, hearsay evidence, personal experience evidence, physical evidence, prima facie evidence, statistical evidence, symbolic evidence, testimonial evidence, and trace evidence. Most, if not all of these, are admissible in court _as evidence,_ whether anyone considers them _sufficient, conclusive, or compelling_ or not. They _are_ forms of evidence; and _everyone,_ self-identifying atheists included, has been presented with at least one of these. So, when people say there is "no evidence" for a deity, *they're obviously LYING.* The Watchmaker argument is an example of analogical evidence. Sacred texts are examples of documentary evidence. The words of the clergy are examples of expert witness evidence. Proselytization is an example of testimonial evidence. It doesn't matter how _poor_ one considers the evidence. Evidence doesn't cease to _be_ evidence simply because one is unconvinced by it.
I'm not convinced, either. However, I'm not so intellectual dishonest and arrogant to pretend that there is _"no"_ evidence. Anyone who is shouldn't be teaching.

The god-of-the-gaps refers to any assignment of natural forces to being a deity. Yahweh started out as a reference to a volcano. Gazing at the movement of the "stars" (now known as planets) and assigning their movements to Zeus certainly qualifies. And this was the genesis of evolutionary religion. As some of these referred to forces of nature that were deadly, humans conjectured that they were caused by sentient beings who could be persuaded to be more lenient towards humans if they offered "gifts" or sacrifices to these gods of the gaps, with the now iconic image of throwing virgins into the volcano to appease this wrathful deity.
In more recent times, the concept of Yahweh, for example, has evolved into a global and then universalize conception. Then Jesus came along to explain to us that God is quite different from the original conceptions of an angry god into a loving God, one that's here to help us, not hurt us. The trouble is, people still think of God as being a local being responsible for physical events, hoped for healings and the like. [We lack the ability to see that it's the angels who are the one who affect the healings...] So, we end up with this mishmash of ideas surrounding God. Enter, a divine revelation from our celestial government called the Urantia Book that clears up all these misconceptions of God and narrows our focus of God onto his indwelling spirit fragment called a Thought Adjuster (previously named the still small voice or the kingdom of heaven within). This part of God within is there to help us when making decisions, especially moral ones. It is an aide to helping us to become more mature, true, beautiful and good.

God has to be crowned and recognised king of kings. You can’t just pray and have your prayers go to god if he can’t provide for you what you ask. Being a good man doesn’t mean I have everything you ask of me to give you. I barely have enough for myself. Though my spirit is god I’m not treated as a god it will remain just for me.

Why would someone’s spirit be any different? I was originally born that way a pioneer. I was born from a sun spirit compared to earth spirits. The Big Bang describes how the universe expanded from an initial state of high density and temperature from nothing. The theory of general relativity: the universe began at a “singularity” (Big Bang) where all matter, energy, space, and time came into existence at an infinitely small point and expanded outward from there. Space-time Theorems recognizes the union of space and time. General relativity has been proven to be true. The universe has mass, and the universe is expanding. Thus the universe had a singularity/Big Bang/beginning from extra dimensions.
Biblical Hebrew has a smaller vocabulary than English. In biblical Hebrew, there is no word for universe. Instead, the Hebrew phrase that is translated “the heavens and the earth” is used to refer to the universe-the entirety of physical reality. The phrase is used thirteen times in the Old Testament, always referring to all matter, energy, space, and time in the universe. We now know that event was 13.787 ±0.020 billion years. This has been checked, proven and measured with many tools and they all agree. It is not just space that came to be 13.787 billion years ago, but time also. The universe is finite and expanding. Just as the Bible stated thousands of years ago.

The Creation Story from Genesis 1 - Part I

There are three main thoughts on Genesis 1 and the Six Days of Creation. This is a short list, just three...

    1) It was Six 24-Hour days that the Earth and Heavens were created. There are variations that it was only the Earth
or only from the time of Adam was a total of six days.

    2) It was Six 'Thousand Years' days (the thousand years are more or less, but about a thousand years per day).

    3) The Gap. In Genesis 1:1 God had created the Heavens and the Earth. That could have been millions or billions of years ago.
In verse 2, God replenished the Earth with life.

For those that study this, and before they have a view: they ought to have read The Holy Bible over and over.
To read, study, and meditate on God's Word. These are necessary steps to understand things from God's Word.
And to not forget to Trust in the Guidance of The Holy Ghost...not just commentaries of others.

It is important to consider the Angels. The Angels were created by God. The Angels were apparently given FREE WILL.
When some of them went against God... it was a bad error, and they had become FALLEN ANGELS.

A note on FREE WILL. I have heard theologians and scholars say that we all have a free will, but is that not exactly true?
Adam had a FREE WILL, but he fell. We are from Adam and are in a fallen position. We may choose right or wrong,
but we have a disadvantage because of our fallen state: that's why we NEED THE LORD JESUS CHRIST.

In Job 38, The Lord tells Job that the Sons of God (Angels) shouted for joy
    when the foundations were fastened...

Job 38:4-7 The Sons of God Shouted

4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.

5 Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?

    6 Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;

7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

When the foundations of the Earth laid - when was that: what day?

When God created The Earth did he make it void first? Or was the Earth already existing as a void?
In Isaiah 45:18 he created it not in vain or void...

Isaiah 45:18 Not Created in Vain or Void

18 For thus saith the Lord that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it,
he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the Lord; and there is none else.

How long did it take to create the earth from this passage in Isaiah?

When did the Fall of Angels occur which includes Satan?

When the Serpent was in the garden Satan was already fallen. So when did the fall occur?

Also, Neanderthal and Cro-Magnons don't seem to fit. When God made Adam,
    Adam was intelligent already.
If God made man in his own image and if you believe in Evolution, what did God look like? Did he have
a Neanderthal appearance, then did he also change in appearance after that?

Then there is the dinosaur question. Reading Genesis 1 - I don't see any dinosaurs there.
There may have been dinosaur-like creatures in the seas, but not on the land.
I never saw where Adam met T-Rex or Triceratops.

    Also concerning the dinosaurs and science - there were three periods: The Triassic; the Jurassic;
and the Cretaceous Period. The Cretaceous Period is when T-Rex and Triceratops were existing.

Science has fossils and it is difficult to dispute.

Now the fall of Satan seems to be mentioned in Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28 - and you have to
understand that in the Prophets there are oftentimes multiple applications.

    Again I say, those that have not spent time reading, studying, and meditating on God's Word;
and have not been through the complete Holy Bible over and over... this might be too much...
To those that have, then please consider to what I say.

In Isaiah 14 - The Bright Morning Star or Lucifer rebelled against God. In this passage it speaks of
The King of Babylon and beyond. This passage also speaks of The Beast that will be at his height in Revelation.

Isaiah 14:12-15 Son of The Morning - Similar to Day Star

12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground,
    which didst weaken the nations!

13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God:
I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:

14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.

The Creation Story from Genesis 1 - Part II

The Lord Jesus is called The Day Star by Simon Peter, and he is called
The Bright and Morning Star in Revelation by The Lord himself...

2Peter 1:19-21 The Day Star - and The Holy Ghost Inspiring Prophets

19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light
that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God
spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

In Revelation 22:16 The Bright and Morning Star

16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and
the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

The Enemy is a deceiver and tries to act like he's The Lord Jesus. His title as
Son of The Morning is close to Day Star and Bright and Morning Star.

So for the three main thoughts of creation I have one more passage
in the book of The Prophet Jeremiah 4...

Jeremiah 4:23-26 The Pre-Adam Days God Destroyed the Earth

23 I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light.

24 I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly.

25 I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled.

26 I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were
broken down at the presence of the Lord, and by his fierce anger.

With this passage from Jeremiah it is easier to see the passages from Isaiah and Ezekiel...

Ezekiel 28:11-18 The Fall of The Anointed Cherub - and King of Tyrus

11 Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

    12 Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord God;
Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.

13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond,
the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets
and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.

    14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God;
thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.

15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.

16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned:
therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee,
O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.

17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness:
I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.

    18 Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick;
therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will
bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.

This passage speaks of The King of Tyrus, but it also speaks of the Anointed Cherub that fell.
This will also be applicable in the 70th Week.

When The Anointed Cherub was in Eden, The Garden of God - that was before Adam
in the Garden of Eden. This is either a different garden or the same garden,
but a little bit different in Adam's time.

Again, when did this occur? Walking in the Garden of God.

Now, as in Isaiah 14 this individual had a kingdom. This passage in Ezekiel
mentions that he had sanctuaries. Hmm.

He was perfect in all his ways... until iniquity was found. Pride found its way.
The devil and pride are closely related.

Therefore, I have to go with the Gap. Most modern scholars will go with the Creation of the Heavens
and Earth in Six Days, and different scholars vary in that theology.
