It's fear mongering, if we weren't so afraid of death religion wouldn't have a hold on people. Because our brain cannot comprehend not existing we can't picture it we seek confort. Religion gives confort in return they ask for everything you money, your morals, your life, your property, your freedom. I'm totally sick of sub-titles being splattered over so many videos, including shorts which are the width of the average cell phone and yet around a third of it is taken up with incorrect subtitles that scroll across the middle. It's worse than when youtube started putting pawnails (oversized thumbnails) over the last minute or two of a lot of videos so you can't see
what is going on.
Oh and yeah, Ricky Gervais doesn't bring anything new to the religion conversation but what he does say is delivered well. He's an absolute pommy gem.

I never believed in religion or gods and yet my mum died 10 years ago and in my mind l still feel close to her because the love she had for me never died in my mind and it’s really comforting so l would like to pass on my love hoping that it brings comfort to someone else. That may sound odd but I’m not asking anyone to believe the same and I’m not trying to trick anyone into believing me it’s just there in my own mind/thoughts/heart!
I've never been able to get an answer from a religious person about why they believe in the religion they were born into and not some other religion. It's pretty obvious. And Ricky is right, God or gods are not the problem. Religion is.

Atheist let themselves be dragged in too much by apologists in discussions about whether one can believe that a nebulous, unspecific supernatural (= undetectable) God exists.
Atheists would not give an eff about that whether one believes in whatever.
What REALLY concerns atheist activists is that what they have to deal with in REALITY, with the people.
What the belief does with the people,
how it changes (suppresses) their thinking,
how they look at the world at the world around them,
how they judge the people around him,
how they act (against other people)
How it makes you vulnerable to be manipulated,
how you fall for ideologies that make use of the thinking patterns that a believer has.

I saw a debate with the topic "Does God exist?" that imho he lost spectacularly, because he was unable to adress the topic at all (by listing unresolvable contradictions in the properties that are assigned to God), but went on his usual anti-belief tirade.

I don't understand all of the denominations and honestly I don't really care, but what does matter when it comes to Christianity is this. Jesus Christ came as God into the world to die on the cross for our error towards God. That Jesus was risen from the dead to conquer death and give us eternal life. For whoever believes will have salvation for simply trusting in Him.
As for criteria to pick a correct denomination or a false one, well that IS very important. When you read how Christ lived through the gospals and the letters from the apostle Paul, you will be able to see the truth through the false.

And what other religions do they say to kill others for any reason? Be precise now, you seem to be pretty sure about this. If your going to use human beings killing each other 'in the name of' said religion, you should think about the people's decision making process. Are they twisting the religious message to benefit their own agenda, or does the religion deliberately say to do said action.
Also, if your best answer to your personal issues is to insult and mock then perhaps you should consider looking into the things you despise so much and understand them better. Spirituality is a major part of our lives and it's built into the foundations of western civilization. You enjoy the fruits of that everyday of your life whether you choose to accept it or not.

Also, if people use religion to kill perhaps you should look into 'the people' doing the killing. Whatever the world view is, anyone can spin in to their own self interest, political or whatever, and others will blame the religion instead of the people doing the murder.

One of the most important ideas presented or implied here is concerning the love of God. I have been saying for many years that real love is unconditional. The love of God always depends on the obedience of the recipient with the additional caveat that if the recipient doesn't obey, he or she will be punished. John 3:16 is often quoted by Christians when they try to explain what God's love really means, but if you read the context up to verse 21, you will see that God's love is conditional.

When you are young you believe everything until you start thinking about it. I don't remember how old I was, but one day when I was praying very hard to the almighty god I wondered why we actually had to pray? God saw everything, didn't he? So he really had to have seen that the people we were praying for needed his help. Almost immediately I asked myself the question that god had to know and see and why didn't he help? He was almighty after all and this couldn't have been a lot of work for him.
So I presented my problem to the local priest and he had a very good explanation: god had created us with a free will! The following week I asked the priest why hadn't god created us with a free will, but without the need to bash each other's skulls in? I never got an answer.
Later I worked out the question a bit better, in a discussion with someone who wants to convince me of the existence of god I always start with the remark that people also have good sides, but some also very bad ones. After which I ask what my conversation partner would do if he saw someone abusing a very young child. Well, the answer is always clear: intervene immediately.
Then I come up with the question why God who is all-powerful and sees everything, also that children are abused, but still does not intervene as my conversation partner would do.
The conversation then always gets complicated and usually they quickly leave, probably wondering why their god does not intervene... does he perhaps enjoy it?

Interesting discussion with Morgan about what to expect at death. When a believer gets a diagnosis of a terminal disease, they are just as devastated as a non believer would be. Shouldnt they be jumping for joy? Like a kid counting down the days to the summer holiday or Christmas? But they dont. Faced with their own mortality deep down they know its all nonsense.
That's true. And while I don't claim to speak for any other atheist, I feel closer to a sense of excitement than dread when I think about my own mortality. I see it as an opportunity to either have a really big question answered or else to be completely extinguished which means it doesn't matter because I won't be there to be disappointed.

The Christian chap said "I knew God would send someone to help me". The selfishness of Christians blows my mind. Like some other human didn't write the manual that was sat in the glove box.

Great commentary. Although I would recommend checking your subtitles. At one point, Ricky uses the word "liberty", but it shows on the screen as "livers". This happens a lot when people use auto-generated subtitles. But, they should be checked.

What you're suggesting is what's known as a "fallacy of composition". It the same as saying walls can't come from non-walls. "Emergent properties" is a concept found throughout nature. If you arrange bricks in a particular way, for instance, you get an emergent property called a wall that the individual bricks do not have. The same is with when you combine hydrogen and oxygen in a specific way. If you put them together in one way, you can make a bomb or rocket fuel. Put together in another way and it can become a water molecule that does not have the properties of each of the atoms by themselves. Get enough water molecules together and you can get an ocean that once again, does not have the properties of single water molecules. Life is an emergent property of certain types of matter. Brains are emergent properties of lifeforms.
So if there is a God, would you change your mind? because then your atheistic view is you "Wanting something to be true doesn't make it true."

Well the existence of Noah’s ark neither proves nor disproves the existence of God. It certainly does make the Bible less likely to be the word of God but who knows? Perhaps God just liked the story so he kept it in.
I would point more to the efficacy of prayer (known to be at best only as good as placebo) or the problem of evil (although that also does not disprove God, it just shows that if he exists, he’s not very nice).

@@LittleLou-vk9fm I think Alex's aproach is more nuanced and while Ricky is verry intelligent , he is not an intellectual so i think even while they are both atheïstic, Alex can for the fun of it ask questions and put philosophical arguments in favor of theism to challenge Ricky, and with Ricky's sense of humor i think it would be a funny conversation. Alex did debates with other atheists or agnostics before where he 'plays' the role of the defender of theisme while being an atheist himself. I dont know i just think it would be funny to be honest 😅

The question i always ask is; Why should there be a god?
How was the universe/time and space created? Can nothing come from nothing? Or did something from beyond time and space, being timeless and spaceless (eternal and without body) create it?
An honest answer would be 'I don't know', but many would choose to 'want' nothing to be a creator. This subject has been wonderfully argued over for centuries and both sides still exist and with differing views on either side. The real question is, and to remain completely honest with oneself and humble, WHAT IS TRUTH?

Perhaps not all religions, but some I know speak of creation from the beginning, so follows a creator that started to create everything at the beginning and not half way through 😂

The current theory is that the universe was, at one point in time, an infinitely small point from which it expanded. That doesn't have to be a beginning, and it may yet be false. We have no idea what came before the big bang, so it makes no sense to confidently assert that it was the beginning of the universe, only that it was probably something that happened at some point.

When someone keeps mentioning God and religion it's a sign of an internal struggle against the "unknown". I think deep down inside they want to believe in something to justify life but they struggle because they don't know what to believe in! Whether there's a God or not, something very mysterious is behind all this. The "instruction" set that started all this had to come from something or someone! But of course, that's only my opinion and I could very well be wrong! ❤

The belief in any supernatural deity is pure anthropomorphism. In the case of most modern religions this faith in a so far unproved being that is loving and cares about us and responds to our wishes is most certainly wishful thinking. Certainly it would be nice if such a being existed but all the evidence seems to point to just the opposite.🤔

Atheists arguments in my opinion are not open to the possibility of a deity and are therefore as dogmatic. In many cases they were able to describe specific things that would be beyond their scope of knowledge or experience. I tend to agree with George Steiner that there is a certain discipline in agnostically suspending belief and disbelief.
Ricky Gervais is a great speaker, he really is. I really enjoy listening to him talk about this stuff. But, with all due respect to him, his arguments are not very good against religion. In the first half of this video, there are no arguments against religion whatsoever then he brings in his first argument saying that we take the religion of our parents or that we fall into whatever religion we grew up under. This is a textbook definition of the genetic fallacy. The genetic fallacy is when someone uses the origin of an idea or belief to accept or reject said idea or belief. The big issue with this kind of argument is that the origin of a belief or idea does not have any sort of bearing on whether the belief is true. Ricky did kind of admit this when he said that there are people who convert to different beliefs than the ones they grew up in. He admits the point that there are people who grow up under certain beliefs who do not stick with that belief. Heck, he even admits that he grew up as a Christian until he was 8. The genetic fallacy does not disprove or give any reason to doubt the truth of religion. The next argument he brings up comes in a few minutes later when he talks about the universe. He is talking about how a lot of religious people will say that God created the universe and then Ricky asks who created God? People will say that God has been around forever and he then asks if that is the case then why not say the universe has been around forever and cut out the middle man. The argument that Ricky is referring to is known as the cosmological argument. It is one of the most popular arguments for the existence of God and it goes as follows 1. Everything that begins to exist has a cause. 2. The universe began to exist. 3. Therefore the universe has a cause. The first premise of the argument is very uncontroversial. It is the natural law of causality. We have never seen or observed anything that has come into existence uncaused. This natural law has never been broken so we have a lot of good reasons to believe that the first premise is true. The second premise is that the universe began to exist. Ricky posits that the universe might be eternal in the past but he is in the vast minority here. It is a very very large consensus that the universe did actually begin to exist a finite time ago. We have good scientific and philosophical evidence for this. Let us start with the philosophical evidence. If the universe is eternal in the past then that means that the number of past events is infinite. There is a huge issue with this thought process. The issue is that it is impossible to cross an infinite number of past events. Because crossing an infinite number of past events would take an infinite amount of time. This means that you could never reach the present. The fact that we are standing here today is proof that the universe is not infinite in the past because we would never be able to reach today if it were. Let us look at some scientific evidence against the idea of a past infinite universe. We know from the second law of thermodynamics that eventually the universe is going to face heat death. Given enough time the universe and everything in it will die. If the universe was eternal in the past this would have already happened. The death of the universe is a date that we can not know for certain but we can estimate and because that date lies within the bounds of infinity it would have already happened if the universe was eternal in the past. So we have good reason to believe that the second premise of the argument is true which is that the universe began to exist. This means that the universe must have a cause. Now based off what we know about the beginning of the universe we can put together what the cause of the universe could be. Einstein was able to prove that at the beginning of the universe time, space, and matter all came into existence. This means that following the same logic as the cosmological argument they must also have a cause. So, the cause of the universe must be a timeless, spaceless, immaterial being that possesses unfathomable power because it created all of this from nothing. Thomas Aquinas said that those traits are exactly what everyone refers to when talking about God.
With all due respect, your responses are not very good. Pointing out that most people have the same religion of their parents is not a point about any one religion (or religion in general) being false. It’s pointing out the fact that most people are indoctrinated into their “chosen” religion when they are children which raises ethical questions, imo. Furthermore, if for the sake of example the Christian god is real, isn’t it rather inconvenient that things like your parents and geography are the most significant things that determine whether you believe in that particular god? This question comes into even sharper focus if one accepts the belief that non believers will suffer eternal torment!
The comments regarding the cosmological argument is also flawed because we simply don’t know if what we might call “the beginning of this universe”, was precisely that or the beginning of the cosmos or a possible multiverse or the beginning of the conditions that _caused_ this universe. And the universe in its current and observable state (where the natural laws of thermodynamics apply) may well be finite but it may have existed in some other state previously or could have been collapsing and expanding eternally. We simply don’t know.
The cosmological argument has been around for a long time in different forms and it has faced all sorts of quite valid criticisms. It is not logically solid and simply appeals to various intuitions on things we ultimately don’t have answers to.

Ricky's use of the argument that people follow whatever religion they grow up in is not an argument saying that said religion is false. However, a lot of people do use that line of argumentation to try and say that religion is false. So I was merely referring to that line of argumentation in a general sense. Considering that it is a fallacious argument I don't see the point in even using it because it does not provide any evidence for or against the claim. Now you are kind of falling into this as well because you even said that most people are indoctrinated into their chosen religion. But there are plenty of people who grow up in a certain religion and then leave it for another one or throw out religion entirely. And also if someone is going to use this line of argument to try and provide doubt to the claims of religion it could easily be turned back around on them because I could simply ask the question "Were you born into an atheist household?" If the answer is yes then it could be said that that person is just falling into the beliefs of their parents. I don't think that this is an issue of indoctrination. I think that parents should be teaching their kids what they believe is true about the world (within reason obviously). Let us look at it under the Christian worldview since you brought that up. Christians believe that there is a God who loves you, wants the best for you, and wants to build a relationship with you. This God also wants to save you from your sins which separates from Him. If someone, let's take a parent, believes that this is true then it would be awful for them to not teach this to their child. If we take the Christian message to be true then it is literally life-saving and therefore would be a great thing to teach to their kids. So, I do not think it is a bad thing that parents will teach their kids certain things. It is the parent's job to teach their kids about the world. Now obviously some parents do that in very bad ways but that is why we look at it on a case-by-case basis rather than saying something like parents should not teach their kids about religion at all. As for what you said about the cosmological argument I think your point is very flawed. The Borde-Guth-Vilenkin theorem has been able to prove that any universe that has expanded on average throughout its history cannot be eternal in the past. No scientist, so far, has been able to disprove this theorem. The amazing thing about the Borde-Guth-Vilenkin theorem is that it still holds true regardless of what the beginning of the universe looked like. What I mean by that is this. There are a lot of models for how the universe began such as string models and quantum models. But the Borde-Guth-Vilenkin theorem has been proven to hold true regardless of whatever model ends up being true. So, your point about how we do not know much about the conditions of the early universe is irrelevant. You also posited that it might be a multiverse which there is absolutely no strong or compelling evidence. We cannot say that we simply do not know. Practically all scientists agree that before the universe existed there was literally nothing. Like I said in my previous comment it has been proven that at the beginning of the universe time, space, and matter came into existence. It makes no sense that anything could have existed before the universe because there was no time, space, or matter. Now you mentioned that the cosmological argument has been around for a very long time and you are completely correct about that. It is one of the oldest arguments for the existence of God. But you also mentioned that it has valid criticisms. I would love to hear what those are. The logical in the argument seems to me to be pretty sound
@@blakealexander8520 didn’t have time to read it all just yet but the first thing I take issue with is that the fact some or many people leave the religion they were raised in does not change the other fact that _most_ people are indoctrinated into their religion. I think that needs to be acknowledged and I think a better understanding of indoctrinate is required here. When I was referring to the use of the genetic fallacy I was doing so in an informal sense. I was making reference to how some people use it. I agree with you that Ricky Gervais was not using that line of argumentation to say that religion is false. I was saying that there are a lot of people who do try and use that argument. My point is, considering that it does not provide evidence against religion (you and I both agree on that) why bring it up in the first place. Now one reason that someone could bring up is to talk about indoctrination like you are and that is a very fair question. I am going to continue to defend what I said earlier. I do not consider it indoctrination or a bad thing for a parent to teach their child about the world as the parents see it (within reason). It is the parent's job to teach their child. For example, most of the manners that we learn come from our parents. They teach us how to act in certain situations and punish us if we do something bad. This is not an inherently bad thing and I think that teaching your kid about religion is the same. Let me refer back to the Christian faith as I did in my last comment. In the Christian faith, it says that because we are sinners we are destined to live separate from God unless we come into a loving relationship with Him. Now, let us take a hypothetical real quick and assume, for the sake of this argument, that the Christian faith is true. If we assume that then the parent has done a great moral good by teaching their kid about something that will save them from death. Because the Christian faith does promise eternal life with God if you accept it. Just like that, we can see how teaching a child about religion can be an amazing thing. This is not indoctrination. It is merely the parent's job. Now obviously, i understand that there are some (maybe even a lot) of parents who fail and teach their kids very bad things. I am not saying that religious indoctrination isn't real. What I am saying is that we cannot call every attempt to teach a child about religion indoctrination. We have to look at it on a case-by-case basis as I said earlier. I hope that makes sense. By the way, I just want to say that I am really enjoying this conversation and I hope you are too. I find it really fun to think about this stuff.

But I think teaching children at a very young age that there is a god and not just that you merely _believe_ there is a god, but that it’s as true as the force of gravity or as true that the sun rises in the east etc. To give it that level of credence and demand their acceptance of what you’re telling them to expect them to worship that deity and tell them all about the consequences of NOT doing it, that is indoctrination in my view and I think it’s immoral. But that’s my view and I don’t expect you to agree with me.

What are you referring to when you say “before the universe existed”? Before the big bang? It is NOT the prevailing view that there was “literally nothing” before the Big Bang. We don’t know much at all about what preceded the Big Bang. That point of expansion was the start of the universe in its expanding state that we currently observe. Our knowledge of the universe is limited to what we observe from that point. If the discussion moves on to before that then we’re effectively in the dark and yet here you’re making quite bold claims about what is possible or not possible on that subject.

Atheism is acceptable to all faiths, if only because they have no choice but to accept it. Very few monotheistic belief systems seem to like non-theism, but short of developing an illiberal theocracy, there's not a lot they can do about it, other than whine and stamp their feet.

This is the problem, Ricky doesn't even know what he's been lead to believe by society. He illustrated this best when he talks about taking a bit of God in a jar "testing it for its godliness and write it down". He's a scientifical realist and materialist. In the philosophy of science some primary assumptions are 'there are no supernatural beings/miracles" and as a materialist 'all things are made of matter'. So what hes talking about already clashes.
God is an idealistic concept in most views so what he's essentially trying to do is find a 'God particle' or 'spirit particle' so one probably doesn't exist and if it did it wouldn't be 'supernatural' anyway it'd be a 'natural' cause in some chain. By assumption that doesn't work.
He's a great comedian but he doesn't get it on a deeper level. Hey a God might not exist, but if God is idealistic and non-material you potentially won't find it by measuring the material...
Not all scientists are scientific realists either. The world we measure may not represent the 'true', just useful models.
Materialism and Scientific Realism are just assumptions. They can be good for calculations but that doesn't mean they describe all reality.
Jesus was anti-religious too. Jesus was most angered by His own believer's lack of faith... And the religious hierarchy of His time on earth.
