Ironically enough, I was first introduced to the notions of "ce" and "bce" in my religion courses in college ('98 - '02). My professors stressed its use because it acknowledged that not all people using the modern calendar are from a Judeo-Christian background. It was meant to incorporate, not exclude. As an atheist who probably doesn't fit into Neil's group, I use it because it's not exclusionary with a twinge of disregard for the AD/BC format as an atheist. 😁

I enjoy NDT, but I do think he deliberately shies away from the atheist moniker because he likes to keep a broad audiance. Atheist and agnostic are not mutually exclusive terms. In fact, the vast majority of atheists are also agnostic (myself included). If you truly believe that God was all loving, he would not punish all mankind for the sins of two individuals who were like children, according to the Bible. You leave some cookies out for any child they’re gonna eat them. The story makes no sense and it’s also inaccurate. We know mankind has been around for hundreds of thousands of years and not 2000 to 3000 years according to the bible. And for the record, Jesus was Jewish and he would not approve of Christianity especially a religion in his name. I can assure you of that.

Love doesn't necessarily mean approving. Like a parent, because God is man's heavenly Father (One of the Trinity), the parent won't let children do literally whatever they want just because the kid wants. Due to the parent's love for their child, they restrict their child's choices.
Also, the God of the Bible is perfectly just, meaning what is good will be accepted/rewarded and what is evil will be punished. Because Adam and Eve defied God's wishes by being tricked by the serpent (Satan), evil couldn't be in the presence of God, logically speaking, and their sin had to be punished. If their sin wasn't punished, God wouldn't be perfectly just and therefore wouldn't be God. You can believe in all current science and still believe in the God of the Bible.
Additionally, Jesus was ethnically Jewish, but if you have read the New Testament at all you would know that He came to correct the Jewish people (Both regular people and Jewish authorities). Jesus came to fulfill the Jewish Law because nobody could, so by turning to Him you could be blameless as He is. He told people to turn to and trust in Him countless times, so if He was telling people to turn to Him, wouldn't those people be called followers of Christ (Also called "Christians")?

@@SamEvans02 I’m not sure why you guys think that a parent child analogy solves this in anyway.
In the garden story. Yahweh places what’s akin to a loaded pew pew(the forbidden tree)in the garden with two four year olds. He admonishes them not to touch it but knew already what was going to happen before he did any of this.
Then to make matters worse, he throws his irresponsible brother in law(according to you, whose Satan, a liar and an unaliver FROM the beginning as Jesus said)into the garden with the two kids who had no knowledge that disobedience was wrong as they had not yet partaken of the forbidden fruit.
And then Yahweh has the nerve to punish them and the rest of humanity who had nothing to do with the garden scene; for actions that he set up all while knowing Any parent that did anything remotely similar would have their children taken from them and probably be thrown in jail for child endangerment.
Any parent that would lo k their children up in a basement and set it on fire is not loving nor just.

Children who have chosen nothing, were brought into the world according to his plan. No one could eliminate this extermination, only the god all love and compassion could and could do it. “But how had I got this idea of just and unjust? A man does not call a line crooked unless he has some idea of a straight line. What was I comparing this universe with when I called it unjust? If the whole show was bad and senseless from A to Z, so to speak, why did I, who was supposed to be part of the show, find myself in such a violent reaction against it?... Of course I could have given up my idea of justice by saying it was nothing but a private idea of my own. But if i did that, then my argument against God collapsed too--for the argument depended on saying the world was really unjust, not simply that it did not happen to please my fancies. Thus, in the very act of trying to prove that God did not exist - in other words, that the whole of reality was senseless - I found I was forced to assume that one part of reality - namely my idea of justice - was full of sense. If the whole universe has no meaning, we should never have found out that it has no meaning: just as, if there were no light in the universe and therefore no creatures with eyes, we should never have known it was dark. Dark would be without meaning.” -C.S. Lewis

If one of your children treated you like that, you'd punish them. Suppose instead of killing them (which is the penalty for sin), you decided to protect your child by taking that punishment yourself out of love. The sin is paid for, and the child is free to live and learn from their mistakes. As an eternal being, God cannot die, only the physical body inhabited by Jesus did. He then returned and was witnessed by many. I'd be more concerned about anti-theists who proclaim that all answers come from within after proving themselves to be imperfect mortals. Have a nice day.

God is all powerful and all good. How many people do you know who died from natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, and tornadoes -- versus died from respiratory failure, heart disease, stroke, automobile accidents, gunshot wounds, and other common causes? It's a deliberate insult to call God the bearded man. Earth would not be a highly ordered, life supporting, and life sustaining place, if God were not present.

This is actually pretty funny. Neil points to all the hazards of living as evidence of deity not seeming to care about us. These are the same forces that prompted people to initially conceive of the gods of the gaps. Neil is in that same headspace as them. It was the impetus for people creating all these rituals that were thought to influence these gods-of-the-gaps into going easy on us. And it's true, religion has not moved all that far away from this mindset either.
But a cosmic deity, one who resides on the Central Isle of Paradise, and is spiritual not material, doesn't really get all that involved with our material reality. God's job is to spiritualize us, not coddle us materially. Yes Neil, humans had an animal origin, we're still mostly just animals, with the potential to becoming something more. And you're essentially saying: "screw that potential," just because you can't see it or measure it. Can you see or measure love? What about personality? And yet you no doubt believe they're real, right? And mind, life cannot exist without it, yet it is not a property of matter. No amount of abiogenesis, (or Assembly Theory), will ever generate life because material reality can never add 'mind' to matter, only deity can. To believe in abiogenesis is to believe in magic, it's just very well disguised.

I recently paid a lot of money to go watch him in a live dissertation and thoroughly enjoyed listening to him. However, I find it very irritating that he makes his judgements about God, who he says is either not all powerful or not all loving. A simple reading of the first few chapters of Genesis will give a clear explanation of why the human race suffers in this world, and the reason the all-loving God doesn't intervene. Wonderful scientific mind Neil, but please do a little research before commenting on a field that's outside of science.

There is a 3rd choice on Portugal. That God is still good, and all powerful, but chose to destroy those people, or allow them to be destroyed (NDT doesn't distinguish this point) for a "good" reason that we are unaware of, and/or are incapable of conceiving in our puny human minds. He has some long term larger strategic goal that we don't and can't know.

    • @Shannon-ij1pm
      @Shannon-ij1pm Месяц назад

I have heard Neil tell the Portugal story and I knew some christian would come up with the nonsensical argument that mere humans couldn't possibly understand the mind of god. If it were one disaster, I could believe it. But if you look through history there are thousands of disasters killing thousands and millions of people at a time. From the black plague that killed and estimated 75-200 Million, 1918 Spanish Flu that killed 50 million, the 1+ Million who died from earthquakes in the 20th century alone. Just google, disasters through history, the numbers will shock you. That isn't even mentioning the nearly 5 Million children (under the age of 5) who die each year from starvation, disease and war. So when you say, god is good and all powerful, we just don't know god's intent, you may get an eye roll from me. Because I find that answer somewhat intellectually grasping at straws.

Perhaps. There is a problem with that line of thinking though. If we can't look at an evil event and say it's evil, because we don't see it as "god" does, then it follows inescapably that we can't look at a good event and say it's good, for precisely the same reason. In fact, we can't say that anything is good or evil at all, since we never have had, nor ever will have, "god's" view of it. For all we know, therefore, "god" is perfectly evil - we'd have no way of knowing.
As for "destroyed" vs "allowed to be destroyed," from an ethical perspective there is no difference. If "god" is all-knowing and all-powerful, then everything that happens...everything...is either something he/she/it deliberately does, or deliberately allows. There can be no accidents, no chance occurrences, no "oops, I didn't see that one coming." Everything - and every 2nd- and 3rd- and Nth-order effect - is, and must be, intended by said "god."

@@jhonvoyage2564 - Within the book, it states quite clearly that there can never be any physical evidence for a non-physical being. The only evidence possible for a proof of God is experiential. Its essential message is that there is a pre-personal spirit fragment of God indwelling our minds called a "Thought Adjuster," there to share in all our experiences with us, and to offer us aid in making good spiritual choices. It is via this Thought Adjuster, (also known as the still small voice, or the kingdom of heaven within) that we can have those experiences. Personally, I've had some mighty wonderful experiences of God's love that were mind-boggling, to the point now where I believe that every person who emotionally loves God, experiences God emotionally loving them back, but that because it's so subtle, we may not know that's what it is.
The text of the book asserts that it was written by commission of celestial beings who know whereof they speak. And the way they write and the things they say about deity is quite complex and interesting. Admittedly, for the first 3/4 of reading the book, I read it from the point of view of it being science fiction. But when I analyzed it from the point of view of: could I imagine a group of people going to all that effort and not take any credit for it, and make it so internally consistent, that it just didn't fit within my paradigm of human psychology, (which I have a degree in). Top that off with not advertising the book, nor any other profit motivated activities, and I was left with the conclusion that it was not of human origin.

There is an entire section that reviews the evolution of religion on our planet (which they call "Urantia"), that puts a lot of the confusing references in the Bible in a context that finally makes sense of it all. Notably, the Bible tells us nothing of who Nod was, just that there was a land named after him. The UB explains that Nod was a member of the Planetary Prince's staff from 500,000 years ago. When the Lucifer Rebellion happened 200,000 years ago, Nod was the lead human to join the rebellion. He lost his immortality status and use of the Tree of Life, but fostered a race called Nodites. As in "the sons of God found the daughters of men to be fair and took them for their wives."
It's account of the Life and Teachings of Jesus, (from a non-Christian point of view), painted a much more robust account of who he was (is) that put the Bible to shame. To wit:
149:2.8 (1671.3) The most astonishing and the most revolutionary feature of Michael’s [Jesus'] mission on earth was his attitude toward women. In a day and generation when a man was not supposed to salute even his own wife in a public place, Jesus dared to take women along as teachers of the gospel in connection with his third tour of Galilee. And he had the consummate courage to do this in the face of the rabbinic teaching which declared that it was “better that the words of the law should be burned than delivered to women.”
149:2.9 (1671.4) In one generation Jesus lifted women out of the disrespectful oblivion and the slavish drudgery of the ages. And *it is the one shameful thing about the religion that presumed to take Jesus’ name that it lacked the moral courage to follow this noble example in its subsequent attitude toward women.*

Prehistoric era : firstly it remains prehistorical because of the lack off writing or a means of keeping records.
But then again God showed mosses in the Bible written down in Genesis
What and what he created from the First day to the sixth day on the seventh day he rested… mind you animals where created before man.
Man was made on the sixth day.
The historic era came when man was able to keep records by themselves
not necessarily needing God to tell them what was in the past cause their children can decode what their forefathers has recorded down in the past by themselves.
I don’t want to argue about animals that were there then or not, cause like you said it was prehistoric no records
Just like now in the present day do you know how many animals that are not yet discovered? does it now mean that they have not been in existence? just because they have not yet been discovered and jotted down in history?
Like wise some animals are also likely going extinct in our time.

Ironically, the curse (which results in all of calamities described in the opening) is mankind's punishment for blatantly disobeying God's commands. Tyson blindly ignores some facts. One is that if scientific consensus matters, then two thirds of all western scientists believing in a deity must hold some weight. The United States Constitution included the religious tolerance clause due to the fact that our founding fathers fled England due to religious persecution at the hands of the Church of England. They were determined not to allow a government sponsored "church" to attack its own citizenry. The twist came from reinterpreting this to banish religion from public places. This creates a vacuum into which humanists are the only group allowed to participate. As far as no proof of God can be found by examining the cosmos, simply explain how humans came into being. Why can't we produce DNA? If inanimate material originally sprang to life, why can't recently deceased animals do the same? At least they were alive once. This is just a case of wanting there to be no God. Without God, there is no reason to behave as civilized people. More atrocities were committed by atheists than by Christians. Tyson noted that there is no zero in Roman numerals, yet atheists rally around the belief that zero equals everything.

Atheism correlates to lower crime rate because it goes hand in hand with better education, higher levels of equality, and a humanitarian approach to society. Basically, atheism thrives in a society that is educated enough and wealthy enough to realise that it has no need of a God to cling to. Faith gives people hope to get through bad times because if you have nothing it can’t hurt to appeal to a higher power. Once things are relatively good that sort of desperate hope is unnecessary and people have the luxury of being able to assess things logically, rather than living day to day.

Consensus means nothing. Even if 2/3 of western scientist hold religious beliefs, it is irrelevant to truth. This is the ad populum fallacy - the fact that many believe something doesn’t make it true (most people thought the world was flat at one time).
The US Constitution is irrelevant to the existence of God - it is a social construct.
The fact that humans don’t know how the universe, life, DNA , etc. came into existence doesn’t mean it could not have happened naturally (God of the gaps fallacy). People once thought lightning was caused by angry gods because there was no other explanation. Some things we just don't know, and may never know.
Deceased creatures cannot spring back into life because they are DEAD (I don’t understand that point at all)
With or without God, there is still every reason to behave as civilized people. We evolved as social creatures and were successful because we generally cooperate and respect each other, and we make laws to try to ensure peaceful co-existence. We wouldn’t have survived as a species if we all just raped and killed each other.
More atrocities committed by atheists? Hard to say. There are plenty of atrocities to go around, both religious and non-religious. Speaking of atrocities, the god of the bible had no problems with rape, slavery, infanticide, and genocide, not to mention casting people into eternal torture for simply not believing (if there is a god, one must admit he does hide himself well, given the horrible and pervasive suffering of innocent people, especially children, and creatures ).
I have hoped all my life that God would show himself, but I'm getting old.
I have concluded that it's all made up.

      So let's review.
      1) You say all the bad things Tyson mentioned are the result of "the curse," by which I presume you mean "the fall." A faith claim without evidence.
      2) What Tyson said was that when these scientists are doing science, their faith has to be left at the door...which is true.
      3) No one is trying to banish religion from public places. The Constitution forbids the government from supporting any religion - which would include teaching one religion's views in the school system, imposing one religion's rules by law on everyone else, providing public funds to support a religion. Those are things we should not do.
      4) Followed that with a bunch of typical god-of-the-gaps stuff ("we can't explain x, therefore god") - none of which constitutes evidence of anything.
      5) Finally, "more atrocities were committed by atheists than by christians." Unless you've done a survey across history to count them up side by side, that's just another faith claim without evidence. I'll go you one better though...there is not a single human atrocity you can name that christians have not committed. I think that takes care of your attempt at a moral superiority claim.

@jhonvoyage2564 I have, but his emails are filtered by people paid to only find emails concerning getting paid for gigs.
So, any video I find with Neil on it, I write my above comment.
This is because videos with Neil in it tend to attract people who like the stuff Neil talks about and if even one person reads my comment and watches my video out of curiosity, then the chances someone who knows Neil and can get Neil to watch that video go up by one.
See I'm the type of person who, when I can't find a solution to my problem one way, will find another way to solve it and what better way to solve my problem than by enlisting the help of potentially 13,000 of these videos subscribers to get Neils attention.
But thank you very much for the attempted digital belittlement, it is very manly of you, and I do adore the fact that you used not one but two words with 4 syllables in them each.
    Bravo bravo.
but perhaps, on subsequent occasions, rather than attempting to belittle an individual due to their specific method of accomplishing a task, it may be prudent to contemplate the precise objective they are endeavoring to achieve.
