That tacky rubber coating is on my Grundig G5 and G3. Used rubbing alcohol to soften and scrape it off of those because it attracted dust and lint. It isn't attractive but it's better than being sticky. I don't know if it would work with this. I don't want another radio with the coating. Plastic is easier to clean. If this has it then it's not a possibility and that's too bad. The KA700 doesn't appear to have it, and I like its features but I'm not sure if it allows continual listening with the charging plug attached. Instead of an adapter jack it appears to have a line in jack.
Why do Kaito and Eton insist on muting on tuning with no option to turn it off? All they need to do is simply address one of the keys on the keypad as an on off switch. I considering this "feature" a serious issue for both listening enthusiasts and the casual listener as serious drawback, as if you have any interest in scanning the band for a low power or distant station it is just about impossible to do with this type of feature engaged. Also the lack of a manual dial light switch is just silly.
hamrad88 Thanks Tom. But this unit probably has a DSP chip in it as well, one of the cheaper ones, all it usually takes is for them to program one of the keypad buttons to simply toggle it on or off. The mute on tuning is likely included in the chip itself.
Loaded with features and looks like a good emergency radio for users. The radio would be a good radio to have around. The readout looks real good and I suppose limiting the backlight helps conserve the battery power. It's the first radio I've seen with a temperature and humidity readout! Like you said, it has a lot of power features. I would be anxious to see how the receiver performs.
A two-stage backlight for the LCD screen would be really nice to have: it has high-brightness when you are tuning, for the 10 secondsthen changes to about 1/2 bright for about a minute, then turns off. Some more-even lighting or a backlight button would be nice too.
You can tell the control labels were designed by a Chinese person, as the tuning knob is labeld "Tun" not TUNE. Even the instruction booklet is filled with the Engrish style language. This radio needs some more weight near the bottom. It's EASY to tip over! maybe you could glue some sticks to the bottom to bolster the stability?
Too bad I didn't have the chance to watch your review before I bought the KA600, because it's really complete and you're so right about everything... I don't like to complain about the KA600 but it somehow has that cheap feeling... but anyways I bought it and try to enjoy using it, but the antenna I think it's its major flaw... Thank for sharing your experiences...
Press and hold the button(about 2 seconds)with the icon " " shows in the display, key lock function is activated. Press the button again with the icon disappearing, and the key lock function is deactivated.
So based on value for the cost, is this a great buy for a Scanner/ Emergency Radio? What other models in the same price range ($50-$75) might I look at?
The manual tells you exactly how to do this. If you do not have the manual just do a Goggle search for Kaito Voyager Pro 600 Manual and you will find it on the Kaito websibe.
i just got one but i like the finish on it. this is supposed to be a $149 unit. I got mine for $79.99. I have one of the lower priced Kaito's in the green black but my new one is silver/black. The problem is that the crank seems too flimsy. It doesn't come with an adapter and you have to buy one separately. What is that Charge IN/Out at the back under the flap? What does RDS mean? I was hoping you would show how to set an alarm and other things. I'm not too technical.....
interesting radio but don't like the antenna set up on it myself, not being able to move it around just strait up maybe that's just me. power options were good though, will try to catch your show on its reception test look forward to that...........
If it has good reception on all bands - then I would like to buy it ! I know it doesn't have ssb, but I'm thinking about collecting various radios ! I use to have several radios , but I only have a Sangean 505 now - with a messed up antenna...!
Hello, I wish to know your opinion about the following emergency radios: (1) "Epica Emergency Solar Hand Crank AM/FM/NOAA Digital Radio, Flashlight, Cell Phone Charger with NOAA Certified Weather Alert & Cables" (2) "Sangean MMR-88 AM/FM/Weather+Alert Emergency Radio Solar/Hand Crank/USB/Flashlight, Siren, Smartphone Charger" (3) "Midland ER300 Emergency Solar Hand Crank AM FM Digital NOAA Weather Radio with Cree LED Flashlight and USB Charger Output" Thanks.
Diana Smith Hill Unfortunately, I had some music playing from the radio during the field testing and RUclips does not allow that so I had to delete. Since I am doing field testing of other radios I will add this one to the list.
Well I like this radio's ability to charge your mobile/cell phone but feel for the price the AC adapter should be standard (included). Thanks for sharing Tom.
I'm not sure, I think when Radio Shack first released it. It's been sitting on a shelf. I had loaned it to my uncle during Hurricane Sandy, and he had returned it to me then in excellent condition. This sticky issue must of happened in the last two years.
I have this voyager kaito pro 600 in black ♡ It is the best Emergency*Radio, Made from China, (not from Germany) ! The Germany Radio Technology and the Design is out today ! China Radios are very good with great Senderempfang and beautiful Design ♡♡♡
In the unit off mode, press the button or shortly with the icon " " flashing in the display, the alarm function is activated. Press the button or again, if the icon " " disappears from the display, the alarm function is canceled
I worked in plastic moulding and there is zero justification for charging more money for different colours. The pellets used will cost the manufacturer exactly the same. If they do not, they should change their pellet provider. Sounds to me like a rip off. Trying to turn colour into a feature.
I don't think this thing gets a B.. in an emergency you need to know what is going on and if it doesn't pull in stations clear you might as well have nothing.
hamrad88 That is good then.. I guess it depends on your local interference. Here in the city, lots of people, lots of cell phones, lots of wifi everything here. I have one (another company) almost impossible to get a station.)

Well as soon as you said no backlight I decided this was not for me.. in an emergency situation that is critical. The writing color black on green not a good idea either. Date time should have it's own button to bring it on. It should come with it's AC adapter! No fine tuning is also bad. Wow, this thing just lost my vote! I might try to find an old one on the market, the new ones are junk.
Diana Smith Hill I said it was backlite but I did not know of any way to force the backlight to stay on which is typical of these radios to conserve the batteries.
I find this radio pretty bad, Battery life is really bad even when not using. Have tried few different sets of battries. Receive very few SW frequencies, seldom listen to anything else with it.
So according to this one the best emergency radio is the ETON ruclips.net/video/Er85O0FDP3w/видео.html and they have several styles. the 3 model has good features. But they have a new one out I haven't seen reviews on yet.
Diana Smith Hill Yes, I have reviewed several of the Eton emergency radios and found they are quite good however of the ones I tested I did not find them much better than the Kaito.

I think it has to do with the electronics cost. Maybe some else can tell us.

I figured out how to set the _date_ but not how to make the date stay on the display.

+Francisco Vazquez Thanks for your comments.
Mine has a lock symbol on it and I have no idea how to fix it and it won’t play anything because it’s “locked”
Press and hold the button(about 2
seconds)with the icon " " shows in the display, key
lock function is activated. Press the button
again with the icon disappearing, and the key lock
function is deactivated.

Sarge's Adventures It a pretty good shortwave and emergency radio. See my other shows on emergency radios.
I have this radio. How do you tune into a specific shortwave MHz? The number I’m trying to put in says KHz. For example 13.244 MHz
The manual tells you exactly how to do this. If you do not have the manual just do a Goggle search for Kaito Voyager Pro 600 Manual and you will find it on the Kaito websibe.

+Tocimah I took down your questions and will do an update show soon for you.
very much appreciated. my new radio is sitting here still. Thanks so much!
I am uploading a show now that tries to address your questions. Show be released in a few minutes
I just got mine and I don't like the cheapo battery compartment lid...
Have you, or could you do some reviews on the best HAM portable transceivers? (walkie talkie transceivers)
Very helpful!
interesting radio but don't like the antenna set up on it myself, not being able to move it around just strait up maybe that's just me. power options were good though, will try to catch your show on its reception test look forward to that...........
I agree the antenna is a big negative and no external antenna jack.
Tom

+movieman44 It has good reception on AM and FM but only fair on SW.

how do you set the time and date on it
You can find the manual here: kaito.us/ka600manual.html
Cannot find the video you made on the reception for this outside of your office.. did you make it?
Diana Smith Hill Unfortunately, I had some music playing from the radio during the field testing and RUclips does not allow that so I had to delete. Since I am doing field testing of other radios I will add this one to the list.
hamrad88 link above to your amazon store isn't working.. says it's down.
Diana Smith Hill Strange. It's working for me and others.

You are very welcome. Thanks for your support.
Tom
Did you send C3PO out for a hot oil bath after his workout?
LOL
Thanks Tom !
+movieman44 You are very welcome and have a Happy Holidays.
the radio function in longwave too ?
Yes
Toms radio room I like your utube videos
Do you recommend this kaito ka600 as a good radio to buy...?
+movieman44 I really depends on what features you want.
My dial light will not work???
Sorry to hear that.
Temperature and humidity is not much use without a built in barometer
I can't find an emergency radio Made in USA. We do not want anything made in china. Does anyone know of a made in USA radio like the Kaito?
I'm having the same tacky problem with my Radio Shack 20-108 emergency Radio.
How long have you had it?
Tom
I'm not sure, I think when Radio Shack first released it. It's been sitting on a shelf. I had loaned it to my uncle during Hurricane Sandy, and he had returned it to me then in excellent condition. This sticky issue must of happened in the last two years.
I just bought mine March 2021 and it came with an AC Adapter.

My kids set both alarms by accident on mine. Try getting them shut off without the manual. Not user friendly to program this radio.
In the unit off mode, press the button or shortly with the icon " " flashing in the display, the alarm function is activated. Press the button or again, if the icon " " disappears from the display, the alarm function is canceled
March 2021 I payed almost $140 on Amazon.
It’s easy to replace the battery too
Cheap too
About 15 bucks for a pack of 3 replacements

My guess is that have less demand for certain colors so they put them on sale to move them out.
Tom
hamrad88
Possibly, but if so, it is an indicator of poor business acumen rather than shrewd commerce.
I don't think this thing gets a B.. in an emergency you need to know what is going on and if it doesn't pull in stations clear you might as well have nothing.
Diana Smith Hill Outside my office the radio performed as good as any other emergency radio in this price range.
hamrad88 That is good then.. I guess it depends on your local interference. Here in the city, lots of people, lots of cell phones, lots of wifi everything here. I have one (another company) almost impossible to get a station.)

Based on your name, it's obvious you have the I.Q. of a tennis racket.
Mine will not power up. Piece of junk
Jim* Carry lol
My friend just got this radio. He likes it, but in my books its a piece of crap.
VERY PROBLEMATIC RADIO OVERALL!! I WOULD NEVER BUY A KAITO PRODUCT AGAIN
Ted May Thanks for your comment.

This thing is cheap. This is a don't buy.
