You didn't demonstrate the weather band. My KA500 doesn't get anything unless you add a 5m antenna wire.

Wather has little if anything to do with reception on the HF bands. That telescoping whip is not used as the antenna for HF reception, an internal ferrite core with a copper wire winding(s) is. You must move the entire chassis and/or the ferrite antenna to optimize reception on the HF bands.

+Hauptmann Wittmann Space weather has a lot to do with reception on the HF bands. From the manual... NOTE: Be sure to fully extend the telescopic antenna when listening
      to SW, FM and AIR.

      From the manual:
Using the Antenna While listening to the FM or WB programs, please
extend the telescopic antenna fully and get close to the window to get
the best reception. The unit uses an internal, ferrite bar antenna for
AM or LW. While listening to the AM or LW programs, please rotate the
unit to get the best reception.

Actually for the price of this radio and for portable use with all of it's features it's a decent emergency radio. It also acted
    like it was fairly sensitive.

Agreed it has potential and considering it's emergency features and power options a worthy purchase.
Tom thanks for the review, I wonder how the comparison might have fared with the Grundig only using it's telescopic antenna extended to the same length as the Kaito?

***** Althought I did not do that test, my guess is that the Grundig would have done better. I really did not want to compare the two since one is $60 while the other one is over $200 but I may do that anyway.

Dog GONE it! You just keep making me want to spend ALL of my Social Security checks:-) Wish you were closer to me so I could pay you to set me up with SOME type of decent antenna for my radios.....

Clipping an external wire onto the FM/WB telescopic antenna is useless for AM/SW/LW reception as there is no physical connection inside the radio. You can magnetically couple an external antenna to the internal ferrite AM antenna simply by making a 6 or 7 turns coil of wire roughly 6" in diameter and connecting it to your external antenna lead. Then put the coil next to the radio or around it until you find best reception.

I don't know about the specifics but yes and they make antennas like that. See my reviews on one.

Yeah you're speaking of the multi branded Tecsun magnetic loop. It can work on the same principle by using it's supplied cable as the attachment point to a long-wire , G5RV, bazooka or similar and using the loop as a coupler. The Tecsun/Kaito etc magnetic loop is tuned to AM MW however and doesn't provide much benefit on SW/LW. I was going to make a video on it this week until my Tivdio V115 just spontaneously died. I'm waiting on my replacement Voyager to arrive in a few days so I'll use it instead.

The telescopic antenna is used for everything except the medium and long wave bands. The LW/MW bands use the internal ferrite rod antenna.

That G5Rv is not really an antenna. It is an air cooled dummy load.

Reception is horrible. Nothing but noise and interference. I cannot listen to noise like that...I want a station full station not noise. You should scan again with the computer off to see if the channels come in better. NO button for pre stored self stored station memory?
