    If anyone is wondering how much battery power the clock/humidity/temp displays take up while the radio is off, I measured the current draw at about .1 mA. With the 2,000mAh 18650 included with the radio, it will power those displays for about 2.28 years with no charging and no other radio usage. Throw a 3,500mAh 18650 in the radio, and that time increases to 4 years. Regardless, any basic daily solar charge to the radio should keep the batteries full indefinitely.
    By the way, thank you for your great coverage of all these obscure radios. It really helped me select this model for my dedicated emergency radio. Good entertainment, too. I’ll continue watching.

    You can improve the AM / Shortwave reception and lower static by grounding this radio (or any other). The easiest way is to get an old headphone plug, remove the tip so only the ground sleeve makes contact when plugged in, then connect the ground of the headphone wire to any common earth ground. Think of grounding as a third leg of radio reception - the antenna picks up the radio wave, the radio uses the wave, and the ground dissipates the energy. Higher frequencies (above 50MHz / FM / Weather) need no grounding usually.

      Can I plug a USB WIFI antenna into the radio. Thanks in advance.

    • @bleikrsound6127
      @bleikrsound6127 2 года назад +1

      @@James-ke5sx I’ve never heard of anyone doing this to enhance reception, but adding another set of wires into the circuit might add some, as long as the device isn’t self powered.
      I have attached a long wire with an alligator clip to the USB connector port, it helped reception on AM a small bit.

    I had this radio. The MW and SW completely died after about a year or so with only occasional use. This was not an electrical noise issue. Took it outside with other radios that worked fine, but AM and SW not there at all.

    I think you'd like the 600 more than the 600L, as it has two features you seem to really want - it has the ability to run off AAs, and it comes in yellow.

    • @jroysdon
      @jroysdon 4 года назад +3

      Good point. The 600L lithium battery can be swapped out. However, AA is my "standard" rechargeable battery, so I've a ton, and I'm going with the 600 in yellow. I even skipped getting a Sangean because it required D cell batteries, and I'd need to spend $100 to get invested in a charger for that and two sets of batteries. Much prefer this model with the direct enter keys anyway.

    Nice review... just grabbed this radio yesterday during Amazon's "Lightning Deal" for $67, inc AC Power Adaptor and free same day delivery... should be on my doorstep before I get home from work.
    I don't think this will unseat my Grundig Satellit 750 or Sangean 909 as the best radio I own, but it's for sure a damn cool radio.

      Yeah, I had to snap it up, how could I not ? I looked at this model and the KA700 a little while ago, and watching your review that was the VS between the 600 and 700 decided that one day, I'd get the 600. That day was yesterday. It was only available in black which was a very very minor disappointment. A yellow one would have gone nicely with my Sangean DT-400 and Kaito Voyager V2, both yellow. But hey, 1st World Problems...

    There are few truly magical things in this world that are practically free.
    This DIY AM antenna is best used outdoors but you can make it work inside by somehow re-routing the wires. It amplifies all weak AM signals, so a powerful local station might be heard over your entire AM radio dial. Here is what you need:
    • 100′ or more of any type of insulated wire you can easily work with
    • Twist or Zip ties or tape to hold the shape of the coil
    • (2) alligator clips (available online or at most electronics stores)
    • (1) three or four foot ground stake (any metal stake or 1/2″ diameter or greater pipe)
    • (1) adjustable pipe clamp that fits around your metal stake
    1. Form a three inch coil with seven turns. Secure into a round shape with ties or tape. The attached alligator clip shown below will be connected to no less than 60′ of your antenna wire. Generally the longer the antenna wire the better so if you have a 100′ antenna wire, that’s good.
    2. The other end (not shown) of the coil will go to the ground stake so leave enough wire. The ground stake can be driven into a convenient and safe place nearby.
    3. For maximum reception, stretch the antenna wire out perpendicular to the station you want to listen to. That means if you draw a make-believe line toward the station, you want to lay the antenna wire out 90 degrees to that imaginary line. You can mount the wire at any height, but consider eight feet for safety.
    4. Bare the end of the antenna wire (I use a knife or diagonal pliers) and clip it to the coil. You really don’t need the alligator clips, but it is much more reliable than twisting wire together.
    5. Our antenna did not work on the pipe we used until we sanded the rust away on a small section under the clamp. What you can’t see is that the dirt is damp. This is also important to make the ground work. If you have bone dry soil you may have to dump quite a bit of water on the dirt to make the soil more conductive. Clip the wire to the clamp.
    6. Grand Magic Test: Tune your radio to a very weak station. You don’t need a signal meter but it is fun to watch it register the gain. Move the coil near the radio until you hear the station improve. You don’t actually attach this antenna to the radio. The coil intensifies the signal which is inductively picked up by the ferrite antenna inside the radio. A 1400 KHz station in our area went from “no discernible signal” to “full power”. Please let us know of your successes or failures so fellow listeners can benefit from your experiences.
    You can experiment with the diameter of the coil, the number of turns and the length of antenna wire you use. If you want to see some other great AM antennas try searching am loop antenna DIY. We would love it if you send a comment and/or picture that we can post.This antenna works great on the AM band because of the properties of these frequencies. Loop antennas can work on other frequencies also but need some modification because of the frequency property differences. There are probably some discoveries to be made in the future with loop antenna research.
    (I didn't write this article. Someone at CCrane did. I would give credit to the author, but I don't know his name.)

    This radio is nice and I like it, but the tuning knob is known to break easily (it did on mine and several people on amazon say the same thing). I sent it back to kaito and got it back and it broke with a few months again. All it took was it to just it fall off a low shelf the wrong way the first time and then it broke again after I just kept it in a metal bucket (a homemade fairday cage).
    It is still usable without the tuning knob, you just have to input channels manually on the keypad and the weather channel isn't changeable from channel one (which mine is channel one anyways)
    its a crying shame, eventually going to get another one If i can get it for real cheap or find a similar kaito radio that doesn't have easily breakable knobs

      I did that a couple of years ago. I had the KA500 when I bought a KA600 (not the L version). The KA600 has a much better receiver than the KA500. On both radios the solar panel will run the WX in bright sunlight with no batteries installed. I have a 10000Mah solar/hand crank power bank that will run/charge the KA600, Tecsun PL880 radio, phone, and anything else that charges or runs from USB. If you have a KA600L, you can get spare 18650 batteries and chargers.

    Does anyone know how well the solar charger works on these emergency radios, can you use the solar charger instead of the hand crank to charge your phone?

    • @todderbert
      @todderbert  6 лет назад +1

      Ill test this......nope, not enough power can be generated..so it takes its charge from the lithium ion battery. I watched my phone charge as I set it to solar and the switch to out. Covered the solar panel and still watched the internal battery indicator drop, but the phone was taking a charge. Findings, the Solar is meant to charge the internal Li-Po passively, and even then they recommend the crank to charge it. The USB out is charged soley by the Li-Po battery...leaving you with a dead radio, but a charged phone. Unless you like cranking the dynamo..which actually will charge the phone with the radio's battery removed.

Any other radio I used picked up my favorite station well, bot not this one. I get _nothing_ on SW/LW. The Li-HM battery in it won't run the radio. The solar panel won't run the radio. I'm still waiting on new rechargeable AAs to charge up and test it with those in. The date isn't showing on display. There is nothing in my book about the calendar/date. I figured out setting the date, watching this video, but how do I make it stay on the screen after I set it?

      The C Crane CC Radio is a high-quality radio. You would probably be much happier with its performance, but it doesn't have the hand-cranked charger and many of the other features of the Kaito. But you could always get a separate solar battery charger and a set of nickel-metal hydride batteries to power it.
      You'll need to attach a long wire to the Kaito to improve the shortwave performance. Run it outside to a nearby tree and attach the other end to the radio, using an alligator jumper lead.
