I use a power bank to operate the radio, and put it in the window so the battery stays charged when it's not in use. The clock runs off the battery, so a little solar charging keeps the clock going.

The solar panel is supposed to run the radio in bright sunlight, so all you need is a window facing the sun, or go outside the house.

did you try using rechareable aa batterys in the battery bank area? what is the battery size in the compartment next to it? did you try that?

Did you use the Dc port to charge the battery?
Or did you use the USB to charge it? I’m trying to get mine to work with it but the dc cable isn’t charging it as far as I can tell

Your recommendation of taking the NMh batteries out of cycle is in error. Failing to regularly cycle those batteries will turn them into a useless brick in short order.
