Hi there, I am new to your channel. Like you, I am a novice in radio. I am a retired LEO and worked for a Motorola Shop in my area for some time, but I am retired now. If I might, I would like to pass on to you one piece of information about Scanners. Many States do not allow civilians (sorry for that) to have Scanners in Automobiles. Having a Amateur Radio License allows you to have a scanner in your car. Each State is a little different though. I have found it very interesting to listen to Short Wave and HAM from all over the world. Enough about me. I'll be watching your channel and bore you with a come back now and then. I did Subscribe to you tonight.
Well less then half the states have any restriction on scanners. Maybe cops should obey the law and they wouldn’t have to resort to politicians restricting citizens from checking up on them.

I took a $35 gamble (as it didn't have a power supply so as to test it), and scored the Grundig version of this from my favorite second-hand store. Brought it home, attached the proper AC/DC adapter to it, and it powered up! - - Some of the controls were on the "scratchy" side, and not consistent in their performance, but less than 45 minutes later, and with some electronic components spray cleaner, the controls were back to operating perfectly! I still need to string a super-long antenna up in my attic so as to test its full capabilities, but so far, the performance has been more than satisfactory! The one feature (so far) that I wished it had that it doesn't, is the ability to set the clock in regular "civilian" (AM/PM) time, vs the mandated 24hr (military) time. Great find, and I can't help but wonder about the "Why's" of the person who gave this gem away!! Being a person who has had an interest in aviation for over 50 years, I was just "thrilled" that he nominated someone to head the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) that was 100% "qualified"; though he had ZERO, ZERO, ZERO, aviation experience, having not so much as spent 30 minutes behind the controls of a Piper Cub (and probably hasn't a clue as to what Microsoft Flight Simulator is!), BUT he is 100% "WOKE", and therefore would meet all of the "stringent" vetting requirements that this administration has become so (IN) famous for!! I have this receiver and really like it. (I am a glad ham.) I was able to utilize my existing HF antennae to increase the reception greatly. HF antennae are easy to make. Good review.
I’m leaning toward this receiver but am not quite there, yet. How long have you had yours? From the many reviews and comments I have read on different forums, it seems people either love/like it or hate it.
One really important good feature with this radio is that the power brick is a transformer type, not the switching type that will have "spurious emissions" that will interfere with weak signals.
Thanks for the video. I bought this radio last year. I think it is worth the price. I bought it so I could stay connected to the world when the power goes out or the Internet is not working. Or I guess even if the crazy people take over (more than already) at least I can hear about what is going on. Plus there is a cool factor in listening to shortwave radio for old farts / radio dorks like me. Looking at getting a CB handheld that operations on FM next. No, I don't need it... just want it. Thanks again!
Having some shortwave listening experience over the last 30+ years with several cheap and one $150.00 price range Eton E5 radio, I presume the model profiled here would be a very decent home "table top" unit. The multiplicity of frequency options should make for a very reasonable portal for information in an " information blackout" scenario. Being able to copy high frequency SSB HAM traffic over great distances is very very good. No matter what or where something is happening, someone will be talking about it. Good video review and great suggestion for the not tuned into radio folks that were wondering about "things".
I bought an Eton Elite Executive, Tecsun PL-660, and Tecsun PL-330 for about 300 bucks total. They all have external antenna ports, are very portable, and you can use simple USB powered NiMH chargers with solar panels to keep them running. The PL-330 can be directly USB charged and can also be set for use with external antennas on the AM broadcast band. Plus with three receivers I have redundancy.
This video is extremely frustrating. Extremely frustrating that there's only one thumbs up button! Bravo sir, another fine video. Keep up the good work. 👍👏

Randy, I have seen TONS of reviews on this radio, but yours is the ABSOLUTE easiest to understand. I would like to see you do more SW radio reviews if you can wedge them into your schedule. 🙂
I can remember the glory days of International Shortwave Broadcasting. Sadly, it's long gone and will never return. Nonetheless, there are still plenty of interesting things to listen to if you look in the right places. Everything that you do on the internet is tracked and stored. However, there is no way to track what people are listening to on a shortwave receiver. Yes, buy a shortwave receiver while you still can.
Great Video, love the shirts. I have a couple of small shortwave radios and after researching, it was my understanding that shortwave in and of itself was diminishing. This radio will be best for listening to the Ham frequencies as I am sure, in a SHTF scenario, there will be a lot of chatter ...

Love you Man! Now in the middle of treatment, a laugh with a tear! That expert upsets me. I made my first transmitter from a Kit. Next time Skit the loud mouth. 73 K2QXQ. RWB ❤😂
Myself I have a Tecsun H-501x. My first love was the Zenith Transoceanonic 7000. There is a potential problem I see is that the shortwave/Ham users/broadcasters are required to have an FCC license. If they severely restrict or even shut down the internet to control the spread of news and information. Then, they will undoubtedly go through the database of licensed operators and shut them down, and seize their equipment...
Back in the mid- to late-1990s, I had a long wire antenna hooked up to a SW radio from Radio Shack. I used to listen to the BBC World Service in the evenings, along with some German broadcasters. Most of the stations I listened to have quit broadcasting to North America because (a) cost, (b) lack of listeners, and (c) the internet.
Good memories. Around those same years, I also liked to listen good music at WRNO (World Radio New Orleans) and news at the BBC, and adjusted my clocks and watches with the signal synced to the atomic time. "At the tone, the time is.."
Hello Sir, I have watched several of your videos now, and I want to thank you for your “regular guy” reviews of what are complicated devices, in particular, a recent review of what many consider the best scanner. I will be watching more of your videos, as I find them not too overwhelming, yet enough for getting the general idea of the product in question. Thanks again.
Beautiful! Maybe they'll watch and the next version will have an AC power supply that fits in that little compartment. I'm looking for one with fewer features in the $200 range because I'm a cheap old bastard.
This is the most fun I've ever had with one of your videos. The dryness of the humor is at a Saharan July level, and the political insight is absolutely spot-on without revealing any specific the whistleblowing information. Two of my favorite things in life are learning and laughing and this video made me do both. 🤗📻👨🎓
Yeah, that soft squelch is slick. I'd like that on my $2K+ "Ham" radio setup. Having a small amount of static noise gives you confidence you are still receiving and you don't hear any speech because obviously no is talking. Little things like this sure make a difference in radio listening enjoyment. Oh, and maybe it's pronounced EH TON.😀
I have had the eton executive radio and the eton mini radio for a few years now. Excellent radios. Excellent video . Health and prosperity to you and your family.
I used to have a eton sw radio until a cat knocked it off my window sill and broke it. Heard all kinds of crazy stuff on it and I loved tuning into the atomic clock.
go to the channel called "John Talks". He's got short daily videos of our government in action (he doesn't narrate or anything, just the clips themselves that leave you jaw dropped)
I have the Tecsun version of this radio. They are bloody good! FYI, the empty space in the back of the receiver is where the power cord comes out of my radio. It is hardwired into the radio on mine and the empty space is where the power cord is stored when going portable using the batteries. It's great to see you have one of these great receiver's! I'd love to see what you end up using as an external antenna. ENJOY! - Ian, Australia.
Love your (GMRS) videos! Interesting enough, I kicked around purchasing one of these a couple weeks ago. Instead I went with the Tecsun PL990, which had slightly better reviews. Although, I may also wind up with an Elite 750 someday.
Picked up the Eton 750 because of the recommendation on this channel and have to say for the $$ this is a pretty interesting radio ..thanks Randy for turning me onto this one !
This looks like as very useful radio, but you need to remember you'll need different antennas for certain bands, like the aircraft (120-130 MHz) band. I think I'd use the secret storage area for an extra set of batteries, or an antenna wire, earphones, or maybe chocolates? ;)😉 Other than that, I think it's more important to know *where* to tune (tornado, hurricane, riots, SHTF, etc.) I haven't found any useful books or web sites for that- they only care about ham radio!
As an AvGeek I used to love listening to trans-oceanic HF aircraft transmissions; one of the more interesting things to listen to on HF on the Sony ICF-2010 I used back in the day. Now I have a full Elecraft K3s ham transceiver, so I have no need for a dedicated SW receiver anymore. But if I did, I'd strongly consider this one.
I am glad that you mentioned the administration's march to folly. Those of us actually paying attention realize that WWIII is on the table for this diverse administration. We should all be terrified.

Do you think we will ever see shortwave DVR type functionality using micro sd card storage? For 20 years I've thought FM/AM car radios should have a rewind playback feature and now that I've spent the past 2 years dipping my toes into ham radio, I feel like sd card recording functionality could be very useful during and after emergencies.
I've been wanting to upgrade to this.... but DCells? I listen on battery, because RF noise on AC. I hope they redesign with rechargeable option. It's a very nice radio. I got a MLA 30 antenna, I was surprised at how much it improved my reception over long wire.
If they did a rechargeable version, it would probably not be user serviceable. All of the rechargeable things these days aren’t designed for users to replace the batteries. You want something serviceable if a SHTF event happens.
@@yayinternets 18650 Li on batteries are user serviceable, rechargeable....... it's what is in my Tecsun 880......yes I have many spares, I have several devices that use that battery. 18650s are what are in most drill batteries, laptop batteries, electric bike batteries.
You do an excellent excellent job of explaining every single detail. Thank you 🙏 so very much. I’m new to communication devices and you videos have been such an inspiration and encouragement for me. Again thank you so very much
Randy, I am not trying to be a know-it-all, just helpful. You may want to get those Duracells out of that nice radio, ASAP. I have had numerous flashlights and other devices ruined by them over the decades. For some reason, they are very much prone to leak, even when nowhere near completely drained of energy. I have generally had good results with Energizers, though I feel certain other brands may yield good results, also.
Yeah, plus one on problems with long term storage of alkaline batteries inside equipment. I've had same experience of all brands, although apparently lithium battery equivalents don't have the leakage issue (if you can afford them!).

"As for WWIII if that does indeed happen" virtually everyone will die, so it is silly to suggest that "preparation" is meaningful 🤪

@@jjiacobucci is it true? I don't have any experience with vacuum tubes, but I thought they still have other electronic components inside the radio as well. Are those other components not susceptible?

You Sir, are exactly what we need. Thank you. Keep it up. The Eton Elite, the only Elites we like.
So did I. Strangely, there was a duo on Radio Moscow that were hilarious.
Good memories. Around those same years, I also liked to listen good music at WRNO (World Radio New Orleans) and news at the BBC, and adjusted my clocks and watches with the signal synced to the atomic time. "At the tone, the time is.."
Hello Sir,
I have watched several of your videos now, and I want to thank you for your “regular guy” reviews of what are complicated devices, in particular, a recent review of what many consider the best scanner.
Thanks Randy. I enjoy your content geared for normal people.
lol tropic thunder paused on the wall, awesome!
When the protective plastic distraction came off, I had to buy it.
I love the feeling of peeling that stuff off. Oh yeah!
What HAM did you buy?
I have had the eton executive radio and the eton mini radio for a few years now. Excellent radios. Excellent video . Health and prosperity to you and your family.
I used to have a eton sw radio until a cat knocked it off my window sill and broke it. Heard all kinds of crazy stuff on it and I loved tuning into the atomic clock.
Kitty Cat killed the radio!
follow the link in the description box for a discount on a well mannered kitty :)
I have one, it has worked very well for several years.
“incompetent yet diverse…” I really like your phraseology.
go to the channel called "John Talks". He's got short daily videos of our government in action (he doesn't narrate or anything, just the clips themselves that leave you jaw dropped)
That's exactly what it is; competence doesn't seem figure into the equation.
"Incompetent, yet diverse" is redundant.
The revealing of the plastic display cover music scenen is PRICELESS! Thank you for tge Saturday morning smile! Luv your content!

Best Review by far !
You must be one heck of a seller. It has risen in price to $450. Good job on the review. They seriously owe you a sponsor.
Not even a month amd the price flew to $499

I have the Tecsun version of this radio. They are bloody good! FYI, the empty space in the back of the receiver is where the power cord comes out of my radio. It is hardwired into the radio on mine and the empty space is where the power cord is stored when going portable using the batteries. It's great to see you have one of these great receiver's! I'd love to see what you end up using as an external antenna. ENJOY! - Ian, Australia.
I agree. I have the Tecsun PL-330 with SSB. A very very good receiver.
I'm up in Northern California and after 11 PM I can hear you guys loud and clear on my Grundig Field radio with a long wire.👍
@@la7yka Would that be the Tecsun H501?
Sub'ed after the first 1:36 just for the eloquent pronunciation of the "ETON" , "E-TAN", "EEE-TON" radio !!! LOVE IT!
Love your (GMRS) videos! Interesting enough, I kicked around purchasing one of these a couple weeks ago. Instead I went with the Tecsun PL990, which had slightly better reviews. Although, I may also wind up with an Elite 750 someday.
You made the right choice. For this Eton money I would have bought the Tecsun 501x
Picked up the Eton 750 because of the recommendation on this channel and have to say for the $$ this is a pretty interesting radio ..thanks Randy for turning me onto this one !
What price can you tell me ,please.
This looks like as very useful radio, but you need to remember you'll need different antennas for certain bands, like the aircraft (120-130 MHz) band.
I think I'd use the secret storage area for an extra set of batteries, or an antenna wire, earphones, or maybe chocolates? ;)😉
Other than that, I think it's more important to know *where* to tune (tornado, hurricane, riots, SHTF, etc.)
I haven't found any useful books or web sites for that- they only care about ham radio!
I'm ordering one of these asap. The Barry White knob was the clinching reason. Thank you sir. Btw the display peel was very soothing.
I am, in fact, a radio dork and I require more toys to fill that hole in my soul. Thank you for noticing. 😢
Who knew a radio channel could be this entertaining. SNL hasn't even been this funny since Eddit Murphy. Thanks for doing what you do.
New favorite channel. I just started watching you for your baofeng uv-5r tutorials. Hilarious, and educational.
I am glad that you mentioned the administration's march to folly. Those of us actually paying attention realize that WWIII is on the table for this diverse administration. We should all be terrified.
This is the best comms channel on the BlueTubes
FOUR CHANNELS!? I was robbed as a kid. We only had three channels! Black & white... steam powered TV... that we watched by candle light... in a cardboard box 😞we lived in... with the dogs and cats...🐶🐱at the end of a dirt road... 😞I was the antenna...😳
Ok, I’m just gonna say it. Somebody has to say it, so here it goes. YOU sir, are the best RUclipsr on the planet. There, it’s been said.
The atmosphere is round, but the ground looks pretty level even if you go up and down a hill it’s still level
I've been wanting to upgrade to this.... but DCells? I listen on battery, because RF noise on AC. I hope they redesign with rechargeable option. It's a very nice radio.
I got a MLA 30 antenna, I was surprised at how much it improved my reception over long wire.
The radio comes with four D cell adapters that hold two EAs each so eight AAs will operate this radio
If they did a rechargeable version, it would probably not be user serviceable. All of the rechargeable things these days aren’t designed for users to replace the batteries.
You want something serviceable if a SHTF event happens.
you could probably wrap your double A batteries in an insulative material and hook em up normally
@@yayinternets 18650 Li on batteries are user serviceable, rechargeable....... it's what is in my Tecsun 880......yes I have many spares, I have several devices that use that battery. 18650s are what are in most drill batteries, laptop batteries, electric bike batteries.
Thank you for putting this on anything to do with preparedness is always welcome
How can I do anything but like this video, given your excellent early, non-radio, commentary. 🙂
I babysit my radios jealously and I've had some Duracells last for years. Energizers-different story.
I quit buying Duracells because of how horrid the leak issue has become.
I absolutely love your channel. Thank you for the truth about all that you talk about.
If I buy this radio, and learn how to turn a knob, does this mean that I can be called a Short Wave Radio “Operator”?
Dude! You’re awesome! Thank God you’re a local! I enjoy and learn a lot from your vids
