    Had this model ordered and it was delivered today, so far so good. It is replacing an Etón 350 crank radio in our blackout & emergency kit that still works via crank after 20 years, but has three problems: the door on the battery compartment is stuck closed, the black rubberized panels have become very sticky & won’t clean off, and all of the different cellphone adaptors pieces don’t work on today’s gizmos (no USB, mini USB or Lightning connectors). It is much lighter than the old one, both made in China. I was able to go into a dark room tonight and use that reading lamp under the solar panel on back to read the newspaper for 40 minutes (very bright). This is one of the reasons I ordered this one instead of the smaller ones. Also, we will tape a card on back of radio in space under the solar panel with AM & FM radio stations that broadcast emergency messages from state OES & FEMA so we know where to tune in.

    That was a superb review. Clear concise and informative. I never really had a good understanding of what those radios were for and what they did. Thank you for educating me.

    This is a great video, glad it’s still circulating.
    Everyone should have some sort of radio for emergencies.
    These Emergency Radios are great.

    Houston is just now coming back online after the cold weather event. No electricity for so long. I did not like that at all so I have this radio coming from Amazon. I bought it because of this review. I always look at reviews on RUclips before I buy anything.
    I also bought it because now I believe Houston is not only tornado-prone but now it is disaster-prone.

    Did you test the short wave at night.? Shortwave works best at night. As far as "emergencies" go Short wave is more of a receiver for world wide radio broadcasts.

    There is also a coil antenna available for better short wave reception. My radios came with a special offer, either a a/c charger or long coiled antenna free ,!

      Kerry Johnston, yes I got a note in my package today that if I post a review on Amz they will send me free either the AC adapter or a short wave antenna. I am going to select the antenna.

    Great and easy to understand video. My radio is boxed up until SHTF but I bring it out every 3-4 months to review your video and the pamphlet. Silly question: It sounds like I should turn the power on with the Ni-MH plugged in, the green battery light is lit… should I just set the radio aside until that little green power light goes off assuming that it is fully charged? Thanks.

    Hi Tom, Thank you for your tutorial! Just got this radio my question is: Will the ac adapter charge the radio? or recharge the rechargable battery?

    Very nice,just wondering if in a power outage you could charge your phone without cranking,If your rechargeable batteries are full would it charge your phone..?

    My first source of information was Google like many of us do and the first thing they mentioned about this radio was that the rechargeable battery was not so durable with each charge! I would like to know if the rechargeable battery holds a decent charge or is it not so good?

    Regarding Short Wave band:
    There are still plenty of stations on the air but
    The conditions for radio waves are not good right now.( as of July 2029 - conditions are at the lowest of an 11 year cycle).
    So it may be necessary to take a piece of wire and attach it to the antenna and hang the other end up for BEST reception.
    I know this Kaito KA-500 “ Voyager “
    radio. It will receive on all bands,including Short Wave pretty good. But peak times are during Prime Time .
    And because of the setup on the radio ,you must tune very slowly
    -
    Especially as it does “mute” between frequencies.( a bit of a pain, but, this radio is not a high end,professional type radio.- But an Emergency Radio That can be used as a daily radio as well.)
    During emergencies, if for some reason your local stations are off the air, or you wish to listen to something else, Short Wave Stations are a nice alternative to go to.

      M & M
      No, but there are still 4 other ways to charge it, or you can use the 3 “AAA” batteries.

    How many Cranks do I crank for a 1 hr use on this ?

    • @CampingSurvival
      @CampingSurvival  7 лет назад +1

      Great Question, David! It depends on if you'll be using the radio for audio, the reading light, the phone charger, ect. But you can expect to crank for two or three minutes before it provides ample power.

    • @CampingSurvival
      @CampingSurvival  7 лет назад

      It's water-resistant and yup, that's a solar panel on the back as it's one of the five power sources for the radio.

    • @CampingSurvival

      It seems to rely a bit on personal preference, but the price and quality of this radio is what seems to attract survivalists over the Sangean.

      The KA500L has larger solar panel, larger battery (2000 mAh vs 600 mAh), better sound, but it has not the 3 AA battery power option. Also there is the KA600L which is digital, it has a bit wide SW band, and LW band, RDS, memories, alarm, clock, and some other options. SW and LW bands are needed only for a very bad situation. For SW is mandatory an antenna like Kaito T-1, or just attach a 7 meters cable to the telescopic antenna.
