Your videos are a great change of pace from the rest of the lawn youtubers! So much good solid info and step-by-step in very fast videos. I'll confess, I do pause and rewind once and a while...but that's what it's for. This one left with such a cliff hanger though...I'll be anxiously awaiting the follow-up videos as I'm getting ready to overseed this fall on my new lawn.
I really appreciate this comment Greg 🙏🏼
Even I pause whenever I’m reviewing the videos before publishing,..text do go by quick 🙂
If everything goes well we should be able to compare them side by side 4-6 weeks from now.
Well done, looking forward to see what your results are between all these choices. $80 for 5lbs does seem quite excessive!
Thanks Allyn, ”..you get what you pay for” Let’s see how well that applies with kbg grass seeds. 🙂👍🏼
Covid has turned me into a lawn geek this year. I just had my lawn aerated and seeded in Sept. I've overseeded 2 times after that and my lawn is looking like a fluffy green carpet.
I didn't realize the bag with 0.01% weed I was overseeding with could be the reason for the POA problem. Thanks 👍
People claimed there’s a lot in it so I wouldn’t be surprised 👍🏼
Much appreciate the effort. Trying to identify what each grass looks like before I start buying seed.
Thanks for checking out the video Toney 👍🏼
Wow what an awesome test! I deff look forward to the long term results. I’m doing 100 percent midnight on my front yard
Thanks Bro. I’ve done a Midnight reno for a buddy of mine, it came out pretty good.
@ princess how midnight kentucky bluegrass lawn turn out .....I bought a,25lb bag of midnight wasn't certified blue tag very little germinated.....going to try wildhorse next time here 93% of it will germinate.....
@@bloodbatteries4797 it went very well! I bought mine from seed superstore, check out my renovation playlist to see the results!
@@PrincessCutLawnCare was your seed certified
@@bloodbatteries4797 yes blue tag certified, it was pretty darn pricey too.. 130 dollars for 10 pounds
5lb bag of seeds without blue coating has more seeds. The blue coating adds weight so the 5lb coated bag is more like 4lbs of actual seeds. And peat moss holds moisture way way better than the blue coating which is basically clay with blue colorant and something to help the clay stick, often starch which is also dirt cheap, yet they increase price and require less of the actual seed to make 5lbs. Peat moss can hold over 10:times its weight In water and protects from birds. Blue seeds are easier for birds to spot and eat up...
I agree 100%, I’m a big fan of peat moss. Scotts actually states that a 3lb bag is 50% coating and some other junk, actual seeds are 48% according to them but if you look in the bag there’s actually a lot of seeds in there. Their estimate is a little generous. Your estimate of 5lb down to 4lb is more like it.
It's half the weight. The label is accurate. Not ~20%, it's ~50%.
Did you use starter fertilizer?
Great way of seeing the difference between all the different types of grass, cant wait to c the results ,good video!!!
Oh my goodness!! I can't tell you how much I already LOVE this!! Side by side plots is very satisfying as you won't lose sleep wondering what if.
Very true Koven 😎👍🏼
Reminds me of your section you did also👍
Looking forward to seeing the results!!! Also, love the ‘bonus’ section.
We love your videos. Keep up the good work. 👍
Thank you thank you thank you! 🙏🏼 I’m glad you stayed ‘till the end 😎👍🏼
See if you have a site one in your area or landscaping supply company there seed is better quality then homedepot or Lowe’s. The perennial rye grass always establishes quicker. Kentucky blue takes twice as long and 3x the water. New turf seed establishes quick tougher and more draught tolerant but it’s all in what you want.I paid $140 for a 50lb bag of lesco pro teammates other mixes are around the same cost unless you get just Kentucky blue.
Thanks for the video, did you notice the Tenacity slowing grass germination?
This is perfect for me now! About to buy KBG seed for this fall’s overseed
Not sure about your specific area but you are missing out on a valuable resource. Our department of agriculture and country extension services have recommendations for the best seed mix for our area and climate. In my opinion straight blue grass is nothing but trouble for thousands of reasons
Thought about buying elite cultivaters for a Reno...but then I thought, that's a lot of beer I could buy , and I already have the best lawn on the block using the hardware store stuff
Tell take red sawzall blade marks on those roots!
I’ve always used Rebels seed with great results and I would waste my money on other RUclipss grass seed too high
All this video shows is what you picked, and not why...and just music.
I think the big difference is how much percentage of weed seed and other crop seed is in each bag. Scott’s might be cheaper but it could have poa annua seed and poa trivialis which is horrible
Very true Brandon, Scotts indicates .25% other crop and .01% weed seed while it’s .00% on the premium.
Well they are side by side so we can definitely compare them. I’m so tempted to pluck the weeds that’s there right now but that would ruin the test I think.
Experienced that issue with Scott's Sun and Shade.
@homeslicedrummer, You seemed passionate about this video. I have a Bluebank, Nuglade, and Mazama lawns, I think I know a thing or two about Elite kbg lawns. I know how they are with diseases, drought-tolerance, and color. One thing I don’t know is this cheap elite kbg grass from Scotts, this is my attempt to know about it and compare it to a couple of premium elite grasses in a real world setting unlike NTEP. I really wish this Scotts gets blown out by mazama and bluebank as they are pound for pound 3-4x more expensive.
Help, I'm new to the world of lawn care. What is poa? Thanks.
Top Cat 44 It’s ruff stalk bluegrass. A neon type green grass that makes your lawn look horrible. Poa annua is a Annual grass which Will die off with the summer heat but poa trivialis is a perennial and it comes back every year and spreads
Really opens up that front lawn. PIttl
Just subbd this experiment should be good👏🏻
Thanks Al 👍🏼
Cheap is 3#s for 20 bucks ? Gee, I get seeds in a 20# bag for 30 bucks
I have the Scotts KBG in a year area, so far it’s been awesome.
Sounds good, im really curious about the Scotts. 👍🏼
Nicely done, and subbed. Although I probably would have filled with concrete and ran the walkway from the side of the house straight out to the sidewalk.
That’s the plan when I’m all done with these tests, probably concrete or pavers.
Well done good Sir, I gave up on Scotts and trying out Pennington grass seed this spring, fingers crossed. Keep us posted and thanks for sharing.
I’ve heard some good stuff about Penningtons. 👍🏼
Awesome. Can’t wait to see results
I noticed you used a roller after seeding. Is this your way of tamping it? Did you put water inside it or was it empty? Just wondering how much weight is really needed. Thanks!
That’s exactly what it was and it was only half filled with water.
@@ShortCutLawn thanks. And you prefer peat moss over topsoil to cover? Any advantages either or?
The coated seeds have half the seeds per pound as uncoated. 50% of the weight is the coating. Says so right on the back. So you're only getting 1.5 lbs of seed in a 3 lb bag.
I buy jrk branded seed. I live in Minnesota. I also don't buy those coated seeds. Also, the premium seeds you bought seem very expensive, even for special cultivars of bluegrass. Anyway. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for a good testspott, what amount of tenacity did you applied in the test? 2 or 4 oz/acre?
I went with tsp/gl,..1/2 tsp per gallon is the recommended rate and I went with half which is 1/4 tsp/gl.
FWIW, ACE hardware in N.J sells Johnathan Green seed under the ACE hardware franchise holders name. 0.00 weed seed. I used their Kentucky BG for overseeding and have had good results. On sale it was 9.99 for 3lbs.
Like the idea and the video but you need to consider that Scotts is only 50% seed and 50% blue stuff. So seed cost in your test: $13/lb scotts, $16/lb mazama, $19/lb Blubank. Still cheaper but not nearly as much as it might seem. Hope for a followup to see how they all turned out.
How often should I water the seeds? 🤔
I Like your video
Was about to buy EZ Seeds at lowes. 20lbs bag for +$50. Well when i read the label it stated it had only 1% actual seed and the rest was mulch. Read the Labels!!! Best i could find at lowes was 45% Seed contend.
Will be switching to a local seed company with 99% seed content.
EZ Seeds and other similar products are meant for repairing bare patches the “easy” way, it is not meant for growing an entire lawn with.
Like you I used expensive premium seed but I have found Pennington seed perform just as well, I feel I get better results with Pennington over Scott’s.
I came
To look at the edging and ended up watching all of the video. Lovely garden/lawn. I’m in uk and although I’m doing my best I’m not this amazing. Long term health problems mean I struggle but over the past two years I’ve gone from overgrown terrible jungle, 5-6 foot grass, weeds and brambles, to having two lawns and borders with loads of plants and some I grew myself from seeds. Loved it so much and today I’m just gonna out in some of the roll edging in, and more shopping for plants. Made a wooden planter for trailing plants and painting that today ready for the plants. Exciting!! X
Videos should have words
Can't wait to see the results.
Is the Scotts KB a dark green color?
I’ll find out in about a month or so. 👍🏼
Where is part two?
And the winner is?
You're a working s.o.b! It's a lot of hard work getting a tree stump out like that. One landscaper, to another!
Music is annoying
I’ve always liked Scott’s seed. By far the best “big box” option for me.
Can’t wait to see the first mow. Great comparison video.
Thanks Ron!
GREAT video. Wish there were more like this on the RUclipss
That’s going to be cool to see, and it was even better seeing you prep the spot. It looks to be a pretty good test scenario.
Hope you can also make a follow up video of this one some day. How they look after few months. Also doing a Bluebank Mazama KBG in my yard.
Damn I'm doing a 100% BlueBank reno...starting to get nervous now.
Great video. Just subbed. Looking forward to the results.
I'm interested in watching this but isn't Scotts bag "elite" seeds as well? They specify on their packaging name. I'd be interested if you look on the back of the bag what stands are in the mix. As others have said, weed seed is a big difference and the coating accounts for quite bit of the content in the Scotts bag - whereas are you are getting 100% seeds in the plots.
Thanks for checking out the video 😎👍🏼
Yes they are elite but not the kind you’ll find one of those exclusive online seed store, that’s why I try to differentiate them by calling the other “Premium”.
There’s a LOT of kbg seeds in the Scotts bag, I think they’re being generous by saying that it’s 50% coating and 48% kbg seeds. Side by side, Scotts is definitely not 50% bigger due to coating, it’s maybe 10% bigger.
3lbs Scotts seeds or 1.5 lbs (minus the coating/junk) is about $18-$22, whereas a 2lb bag of pure seed Mazama and Bluebank are $62 and $72 respectively.
digging stumps is the real deal man. Hard work but so much better than grinding
Another great video from one of a kind lawn care natural!
Definitely looks pretty equal at 10 days between the Scotts and the mazama!
Yup, looks like the kbg’s just hit the “sprout and pout” stage, we’ll see in a few days if the Scotts can still keep up. 🙂👍🏼
What state are you in?
California.
Hi, thanks for an awesome video. I'm going to be seeding KBG early September and the bag says that it takes 14-28 days for germination. Should I expect it to germinate faster like yours did if the conditions are right?
Yes,..don’t plant the seeds too deep, cover it with peat moss, and keep it watered. 👍🏼
ruclips.net/video/S0FBT14cGS8/видео.html
Nice I love testing spots and you had to do what's best when it came to that tree. Great video 👍true story I had used that Scott's blue grass a while back as a test spot also year later I sprayed it with glyphosate and no joke it came right back 🤷♂️
Resilient grass, sounds good to me 😁
Bro great video. I always wanted to see this comparison. I have bluebank at my house and I also have a big bag of no name kbg I wanted to use but held off. That rye mix is crushing the others. So I'm moving and starting over. What do you think of me doing a straight rye lawn?
Thanks Clint,...Rye is an impressive grass, I “regretfully” overseeded my kbg lawn 2yrs ago, that thing stays green year round leaving dark patches as my kbg goes up and down in color. I have to up my iron app just to match the rye.
I was so close to renovating half of my lawn to pure rye earlier this year,..but that Mazama kinda hard to resist. 😁
@@ShortCutLawn so the rye is significantly darker
?
Oh yes, I’ll DM you a couple of photos
so as of right now do you feel you can seed with the cheaper option and receive the same great results..? im actually about to buy 85% ttf with 15% kbg..50lb bag is 150..need 5 bags..looking for cheaper option and not sacrifice..
@homeslicedrummer this is not a one and done video, i will be uploading updates weekly if time permits, this video is just an Intro.
@homeslicedrummer, I have a Bluebank, Nuglade, and Mazama lawns, I think I know a thing or two about Elite kbg lawns.
@HomesliceDrummer i agree with you 100%..hands down expensive seed compares to nothing else..i would never put box store seed in my current lawn..now i am renovating a acre n half..and was on the fence with just tossing a decent seed just to get coverage..it keeps me from throwing 10lbs per 1k to about 4lbs per 1k..reno lawn vs overseed..yes some trash will prolly prevail from it..but planned on tossing tenacity and then of course my regular maintenance in spring and so on..just was wondering if its worth it..
Definitely interested to see how this turns out. Great video! I have inherited a patch of KBG that totally outperforms the rest of the lawn. Just wish I knew which cultivar it is.....
Very excited to see the results. I mixed in the very same scotts elite KBG and mixed in with bewitched KBG last Sept. to my backyard. The grass held up well for about 3 weeks of extreme hit but started taking a turn for the worst the 4th week. Cant say for sure it was either blend of seed that is dieing off though. I used 100% bewitched out front and looks much better than the back however backyard gets much more direct sun. Just ordered the Bluebank yesterday to overseed this fall. Will do a full Reno next fall if this performs well.
I wonder if that’s a known downside of Bewitched, Koven’s having issues with his as well. I love my Bluebank, holds well thru California winter, just get your Iron app ready coz that thing is a little bit on the lighter side.
@@ShortCutLawn Are you saying the bluebank doesnt get as dark green in comparison to Bewitched?
I’ve never had Bewitched so I’m not sure, one of my subscriber had the same observation with Bluebank. Its funny coz’ it’s labeled as “the new midnight”. I’ve done a Midnight renovation a couple of years ago for a buddy of mine and that grass is a little darker than BBank. Well Soil could be a big factor that influence color too so I can’t be so certain, its just my observation.
Did you apply the tenacity over the peat moss that same day?
Yes, i think it was a day or two after.
Taking out that tree looks like a pain in the A**. Great job bro 👍🏽
...it was 😁
This is going to be great!
These are my FAVORITE type of videos, thank you for doing it and sharing!
My pleasure 😎👍🏼
You sir are a true enthusiast! Thank you for your efforts.
🙏🏼
I'm impressed with the Perennial Rye.
Great video! I am anxiously waiting to see how it turns out. Question: why did you use a roller on the scotts and not the others? Wouldn’t it have been better if you kept everything the same except for the seed?
Thanks, i was going to use it then i realized the roller was too big for the mazama plot, also roller got wet when I watering the Scotts plot, seeds would’ve stuck to it and most likely transfer it to the bluebank plot.
Tree lives matter. Just not that one
Now do this on 2.5 acres LOL
I’m considering killing off my grass in the front yard of my new house. I used the GW dethatcher tool and don’t see much that I want to preserve. I’m thinking of using concentrated vinegar to kill the grass then seed with some grand slam PRG from SSS. Can I kill the grass with vinegar or do I need to use glyphosate?
I am not suggesting anything but I personally use glyphosate. I just make sure that I protect myself during application; mask, long sleeve shirt, long pants, socks, boots, hat, and gloves. I wait long enough for the chemical to break down before I do anything like disturbing the dirt. Glyphosate is great, but it is not a chemical to be taken lightly.
What kinda grass do you have? Some grass types out there are glyphosate tolerant.
ShortCut Lawn It’s probably a mix of KBG, PRG and fescue as most lawns are in Chicago area. I may just try the vinegar, I have a paver driveway and back patio and plan to zap the crack weeds with that, so while I’m at it, I’ll try the front lawn as well with the vinegar. Might take two or more apps, we’ll see.
I used mazama on a shady side of my house. I seeded a year ago and it looks great. It was slow to come in. I would say it grew to about 2" before winter. When spring came it took off. I have to mow every 3-4 days to keep up with it.
That’s good to hear, my Mazama is about 4 months old and hasn’t experienced winter and low sun exposure yet, so far i am very impressed. Really intrigued on how well it will perform under reduced sunlight. 🤞🏼
I've been looking online for the Park Avenue Seed Perennial Rye. Ummm...why can't I find it online to buy? And, what Home Depot is showing can't be shipped. 🤔 I also note they are showing it as Park Avenue Turf.
May not be available in your location. I added the link in the description, give it a try.
