Timing is Key : To kick things off, let's talk timing. The best time to overseed your lawn with perennial ryegrass depends on your location. For cooler climates, aim for late August to early September, allowing the new grass to establish before winter. In warmer regions, where ryegrass acts as a winter substitute, overseeding is typically done in October to early November to maintain that lush green appearance during the cooler months.
Step 1: Scalping Your Lawn: The first step is to scalp your lawn, cutting it as low as possible without causing damage. Don't be alarmed if your grass looks a bit rough after this - it's a crucial part of the process. By reducing the grass canopy, you create an optimal environment for your new seeds, ensuring they reach the soil layer and receive sunlight.
Step 2: Dethatching or Scarifying: Now, it's time to dethatch or scarify your lawn to remove dead debris between the grass and the soil. This step is vital for achieving proper seed-to-soil contact, a key factor in successful overseeding. Seed won't germinate without it.
Step 3: Spreading the Seed: The next question is how much seed to use. While the general recommendation is 6-8 lbs per thousand square feet for perennial ryegrass, I overseeded 10 lbs per thousand sq ft. Why the extra seed? Well, if your lawn is already thick with established grass, a heavier seeding rate ensures that the new grass can compete and thrive.
Step 4: Raking In the Seed: Don't skip this step! Raking the seed into the soil helps it settle into the grooves created during dethatching. This is essential for that crucial seed-to-soil contact.
Step 5: Rolling the Seed In: One of the most critical yet often overlooked steps is rolling the seed into the ground. Properly rolling your lawn helps achieve that essential contact, ensuring your new grass gets off to a great start. Rent a lawn roller or use your lawn tractor's weight to get the job done.
Step 6: No Need for a Cover: Contrary to conventional advice, we recommend skipping the use of peat moss or straw as a cover for your seed. If you've followed the previous steps, your existing grass should provide adequate coverage for germination.
Step 7: Proper Watering: Watering is the key to germination. Keep the seed consistently moist, without drowning it. Water 4 times a day for 5-7 minutes each time, adjusting to your irrigation system's specifications. Proper watering is vital for successful overseeding.
Adding Starter Fertilizer: After germination, consider adding a starter fertilizer, especially if your soil is low in phosphorus. Follow the label instructions for application. Apply it after the first mow to avoid choking out the new grass with rapid growth.
Within 5-7 days, you'll see germination, and in about 30 days, you should start to notice some remarkable color coming in.

Can I pick it up? I'm in Minnesota.
George and you crushing it!
I was going to say the same thing This basic neighbor of mine he's north of me really is making killer videos takes a lot of practice to be able to walk and talk and stare right at that camera lens You are a professional man in more ways than one keep up the great work and thinking I'm going to purchase some of that new ryegrass
That was awesome. Great tips and I saw George in there too. You guys rock, have a great labor day!
Thanks Matt. Appreciate the support!
Thanks for the video. I am 100% going to take your advice and follow your steps this fall . And hopefully fix my atrocious back yard
Great video, awesome video editing as usual. I’ve watched a lot of lawn channels and I can say you’re getting better and better with each video. Your research and ability to clearly articulate your findings is impressive. Well done!
Thank you for this comment. I'm glad you're noticing all the hard work I'm trying to put into these. It's not easy some days!
Perfect time for this video. Getting ready to overseed a community lawn(cemetery) with several volunteers involved in the process. This will be shared with them so they can understand what and why we are doing different steps. Very nice video.
SWEET. Will back lap my blades real soon. Thanks for info.
Just did this process verbatim here in Colorado 2 weeks ago. Starting to fill in. 2 more weeks then I’m going to put some sustain 18-1-8. Can’t wait
Best vlog ever ! Thanks
Awesome video. Looking to overseed soon here in the Midwest, and appreciate the detailed steps involved. Keep up the good work.
Thank you brother! I appreciate the kind words!
Great video bro!
Had a fun time with you in Oregon!
Had a blast bro!
First Aussie 😁. Jesse , a great in-depth video with loads of useful information. Impressed . 🤠
Thanks Trevor!
Really cool video - thanks for the great information.
Cant wait to put this down!!
Great info thank you.
Excellent! Also my favorite grass here in central europe!
Just ordered today from Troy and Cori gonna mix it in with my 3 week old kBG. I'm in transition zone Orange County, Ca.😊
Great lawn content. That was A LOT of editing work bro, nice job.
Thanks bro. Too much time goes into these lol
Great job
Good video, nice grass.😁
I used this for overseeding in the fall in the PNW and it's looking incredible. Just ordered another bag for a bit more spring overseeding. Love to see you have your own site now which makes getting ahold of this blend so much easier straight to my door, thanks!
That's awesome Brad! Is there anyway you can send me some pics? I appreciate the support. I can't wait for mine to fully come out of dormancy
@@LAWNLIFE Always happy to honor the source and buy from you! Just sent you an email with a few before/after pics. Cheers!
I'm in the PNW also, just ordered some for overseeding and fixing a rut near my driveway. I'm super stoked!

Looking good man, I'm trying out some Barenbrug Parkside Perennial Ryegrass and doing a renovation at my mothers house. I'll have to check out these cultivars in the future, maybe do another reno on my backyard which I haven't really touched.
great job
Jesse is back! 🎉
LFG! 😂
I just bought 25lbs of obsidian to try this season which is 34% Fireball, 33% Hattrick, and 33% TEE-ME-UP. Looking forward to trying it this season.
Haha… same here
Great video and thanks for the tip!
30day lawn update short?
Good idea!
Wow, I'm only 20 minutes north of Salem Oregon and never knew about Troy and all of his extensive testing until you Jessie!
Now that I'm sold on fireball & Hatrick is it too late to overseed in Oregon (it's the end of September)
Subscribed!!
If you're putting down rye you might be able to get away with it if you put it down ASAP. It's cutting it close though
I did my own research and reseeded with Hatrick, fireball, and grey wolf. Another trick that I did was lay seed and then used the scarfier almost like a slit seeder. Then I did another pass of seed on top of that.
How have your results been?
Just seeded this … ❤
Let me know how it goes!
+1 for Step #6. 👏👏
Just roll your seed in and water it, it will grow!
Ppl over-complicate things sometimes!
I just ordered. I have super turf 2 from United seeds but want to mow at 1 inch. Time for me to step it up so I will be nuking my yard again and planting this blackout. My neighbors are gonna think I’m crazy 🤣
Awesome video, question on watering. When did you cut back watering 4 times a day? After germination ?
What a great video. We used Hatrick last fall on one of our other fields along with 365 SS bluegrass. We just completed renovation on another field and we are using both of these grass types. Fireball and Hatrick from Twin City Seed Company. Irrigation will go in this week along with seed. Appreciate your hard work and dedication in your videos.
Thank you! How did the overseed look with Hatrick? I'm going to need to see some photos when those renovations mature! Glad you're enjoying the content!
Turned out great. We are in southwest Ohio just North of Cincy. Seed (365 SS Bluegrass) was pre germinated and all was going great until mother nature threw us some much cooler weather last year. This was a baseball youth infield we worked on last fall. So roughly 3,000 sqft or so. Let’s just say Bluegrass is not in any kind of hurry for sure. So after about a month I just used our nail drag to open that canopy back up to get that seed to soil contact. What a difference that made. I will email you over some pics of it for you. Also will keep you updated on our renovation
Love your contend
Thanks Gary!
im going to test, compare hatrick , fireball against Pangea next year
Jessie, great video. You need to invest in a drop spreader. Better coverage and more control.
Thanks Ron, between lawn tools and kid's toys I don't have any room left in the garage for another spreader. I need to sell some stuff, but you are 100% right. Way more control!
Great video! Lawn is looking fire. Have some fungicide on hand. PRG is very susceptible to Pythium.
Thank you for the heads up!
Yup. When I did my reno last fall I had to start late because of the late summer, Timed it as best I could, but there were a couple of places that received cross-zone extra watering that started to show pythium. Thankfully, I had the right fungicides available to knock it down after readjusting my heads for more uniform coverage. RK's Elite PRG came in absolutely gorgeous, btw.
Love your videos! Great work. Do you not recommend using starter fertilizer? Also, what brand seed do you recommend?
Yes I mentioned using starter fert if your low in phosphorus. If you're not sure, just use it.
As for seed. Use this if you're overseeding. You can contact Troy at troy@baileyseed.com
Awesome work on this video. This is one of the best videos on overseeding I've watched.
Any thoughts on using pre-emergent when overseeding?
Thanks! I really appreciate that. A lot of hard work goes into these videos lol. Do NOT use pre-emergent when overseeding. Your grass will not germinate. That's what pre-emergent job is, to stop all seed growth!
@@LAWNLIFE OK< but can't you use something like tenacity? I did and my grass germinated just fine.
@@gfranks007 Tenacity can be used when seeding or overseeding. That is the only pre-emergent recommended during seeding.
Link the mowers bro. Need advice on equipment. Great vid.
Question bud. With already having a full KBG lawn what is your plans come next spring with the mixture of 2 different types of turf? Will the Rye burn up and make the lawn look bad all summer?
The level of detail and production of your videos are impressive! Are you still in contact with Yardbrah?
I enjoy your channel and was interested in this video. I am having difficulty ordering this PRG combo from the link you included. It seems they want to refer me to a wholesaler and there isn't one in my area. Can this seed be ordered directly to the homeowner?
As long as my lawn has no patches I don’t care how dark it is LOL. 😂
Awesome cultivars. I’m 16 days in after doing a 9000 sqft reno of fireball, Hatrick & gray hawk from TCS. Definitely can’t wait to see the mature color as it’s already darker than anyone else in my neighborhood.
Sounds like a great blend. Should be stupid dark once it matures! Where are you located?
@@LAWNLIFE Columbus Ohio
Great stuff as usual Jesse. I’m in Zone 5 and planning to overseed 10K sq ft with PGR (Pangea/Paradox/Elektra blend) next weekend. I was going to use a peat moss roller to cover but am now reconsidering. Definitely would save a lot of extra time and money.
How's it look now? I overseeded mine with fireball and hatrick blend and I can see germination today can't wait another couple of weeks myself.
@@itshim2197 looks better each day! We need rain though. No rain for 4 weeks. My water bill is about to be $$$
WOW! I used this video verbatim and I will say that I only used FIREBALL grass seed on my lawn. The grass is Mega dark! I kept the mowing level real low as I noticed that with only using Fireball as a stand alone the grass will look " weedy " if it grows long.
That's awesome man. Can you send me pics?
@@LAWNLIFE TOO LATE lol. I just scalped my lawn as my TifGreen is coming in really fast.
Dang, I've been using their tall rescue kgb blend and I had no idea it's from my town lol..
can you use the "tines" attachment on you dethatcher to rake in the seed?
Found I can import this to the UK now, do you have any updates over winter etc? Thanks
Do you still like the PRG after having it for a little bit? Looking to overseed my KBG for the color just like this. Really curious how it is doing. Thanks
Man love your grass.
Would love to try this out your blackout seed. I’m in. North Alabama. Do u think this would work
No it will not unfortunately. Sorry man. It just won't survive the heat
I’m in Alberta, Canada border with Montana could I do this in the spring?
Great video as always! Surprised that you needed to overseed considering you had a pretty dense kbg lawn. Since you had pretty elite cultivars and kbg spreads well and thickens up on its own, what made you decide to overseed with ryegrass?
The shade was killing me on that side of the house. Not the prg is a solution for that, but they had some fireball in pure shade in Oregon and it did very well. To be honest, I just want darker grass without having to pound it with N or iron. The kbg is dark, but nothing close to this
@@LAWNLIFE sounds good!

If I just want the dark green grass can I just go with fireball? Currently have TTTF and I want it to be darker green. Is there any other reason why to add Hatrick rye too?
Hello, Do you have the 12amp 13inch or the 13amp 15inch version?
Why does this entire video look green screened, and feel like one of those '90s late night "free real estate" infomercials?
I literally copied what you’re doing by ordering the fireball an harrrick but my question is that I seeded my blue grass a month ago should I overseed with the rye now it’s been about 5 weeks for my bluegrass it’s coming in beautifully but i kinda wanna throw in some rye. Should I or should I not do that?
What about a starter fertilizer when overseeing? Planning to do over seeding with Fireball/Hattrick this spring in the Chicago area
any updates @lawnlife?
"Run over it with your car"
im dead bro 😂 😂 💀
Do you recommend Aerating the lawn after scarifying it? Then throw in the grass seed? In Chicago and going to try it this Spring
Scarifying should be enough if you go two separate ways. Worked well for me
Would you over seed st agustine in the south? I’m in Arlington Texas. I love having a green lawn and hate looking at dead grass in the winter!!
Use Bermuda in Arlington DFW

4:55 How did you prop open the bagging door on the back of the Sun Joe? I have the same one but don’t use the bag and have to stop to let out the material.
I just used a strong clip to put on the plastic side. It's not ideal though. So much crap gets in your shoes and gets flung against your legs. I just propped it open for the camera to see what it's actually doing
Now having over seeded with perennial ryegrass, how do you think that compares two doing a fall nitrogen Blitz inure kbg lawn?
The results are much faster overseeding with prg, but time will tell if I regret overseeding in my 100% kbg. I'm pumped to see the color difference and striping ability. I'll keep you updated man
Looking for the darkest Kentucky Bluegrass is this Bluegrass/Rye mix darker than Barenburg ?
Excellent video I was going to try the same combo. Busted my knee and now overseeding is out 😢
Dang that sucks. Hoping it's nothing serious and you're back on your feet soon! Thanks for watching.
@LAWNLIFE Thank you keep up with the good content
I knew we were due for a LawnLife overseeding video!
How many days/weeks after overseeding and starter fertilizer should a fall nitrogen fertilizer plan start? Could I do 4 weeks after germination until the end of growth or will that damage the young grass plants?
It was only a matter of time! Haha. I wouldn't recommend that fall blitz if you overseed. You don't want your established grass to overpower the baby grass. Still give it nitrogen, but not as much as the blitz.
@@LAWNLIFE thanks! I was excited to go nuts with the nitrogen but I think the overseeding will pay better dividends this fall.
@@PFDarkside hit half the lawn with a nitrogen blitz after overseeding and see what works better 😂
But where do you live? I live in Denver and would like to know if this would work for me.
thoughts on adding to a kbg/fescue lawn to get a little more pop? will the rye die off in the summer time and stand out?
I wouldn't add rye with fescue. They don't blend well together. Looks really spotty
10-4 thanks! @@LAWNLIFE
If we pre-germinate, do we still do the pressing and raking steps?
Yes
Would perennial rye do good with gci tttf up here in Massachusetts cool zone,?
No. TTTF is a bad combo with ryegrass. I would avoid it to be honest. It'll look clumpy and ugly
How do I mow lower from 2.5 inches to 2.0 inches when my Honda mower can cut through how thick the grass? time to use the Sun Joe? Any recommendations would be great, in Minnesota so cool season grass
Yes, you can use the scarify or dethatch attachment to thin it out a bit and then take it lower. Definitely should help!
Would it be terrible to try and do some overseeding in the spring? Midwest area
I'm overseeding my neighbors house tomorrow. We'll see how it goes
Thoughts on the st paul specific NTEP ratings having Fireball as number one but Hattrick not so great? At least that is what i saw using the UMN NTEP search for genetic color. I was considering this same combo but ultimately chose to just go with monostand of FB just for fun and curiosity.
Monostand will work just as good. I have test plots in my backyard of both and the fireball is a little bit darker. When did you put it down?
@@LAWNLIFE 8/6 was seed down. A little early but its doing just fine in the heat so far. I have a lawn journal at TLF under the same username with pics if you are curious.
I'll take a look. Love reading the lawn journals there
Wow good job with the undercover Reno. I'm excited to see the color when it finally matures!
Thanks! I had to play it cool when my kids were out playing in the yard so there was a lot of reseedings in various areas but I got it done!
Can you please make a video on how to keep fire ants off of lawn? Subbed and thanks
Thoughts on pre-germinating the seeds?
You can, but seems like a lot of work for only 2/3 days faster germination. Mine germinated in 5 days
I have Kentucky bluegrass currently…will there be any issues if I over seed with your recommendations on my existing lawn?
No issues. I had 100% Kentucky bluegrass and just overseeded with this.
Too bad you can't post pics, here. I would show everyone MY perennial rye lawn. 👍
Do you suggest any changes to mowing frequency or height of cut after overseeding, or just keep mowing as needed?
I would start mowing where you want to keep the height of cut at it. Mowing more is always better for grass, young or not.
Will mowing too soon disrupt germination though, or will seed be ok if it’s in close contact with soil and with sufficient moisture?
I would wait until the seed germinates and grows to your desired height
Will this mix work in nashville with no irrigation?
I think TTTF would be a better option for you. Troy has a very dark TTTF cultivar named Thunderhead. Contact him at troy@baileyseed.com
Are your blackout grass seeds a sun and shade mix
The tall fescue and perennial ryegrass (fireball and hattrick) will both do well in sun and shade.
Silly question I suppose ...what was number 2 and why was it skipped to mix #1 and #3 wouldnt mixing the 1st n 2nd most dark PR make more sense? Just curious
It's a seed that's unavailable to the public. Not sure the reason
@@LAWNLIFE awsome thanks for the response now I gotta find that seed curiosity will kill me lol
What’s your recommendation on detaching 1-1.5 acres, also racking the seed in?
A pull behind dethatcher would be how you would dethatch it and rake in the seed imo.
@@LAWNLIFE thanks for the recommendation!
Wait. So during a reseeding, you throw down the starter fert like a week or 2 later after seed throw down?
..You mentioned after germination.
Yes. So the established grass doesn't outcompete the grass we just overseeded.
Is it possible to mix fireball and hat-trick with Bermuda grass? Have you ever done that?
bermuda will likely out grow the other two but doesn’t hurt to do a patch test
The 10:49 wide shot of your side lawn looks photoshopped - so green! You overseeded the PRG into your KBG, right?
Yes I did. It was hard to do but I want it darker and was having issues with the shade over there. There is a lot of baby ryegrass in that wide shot. Greened up it super well. Still is looking good now!
❤ where can you get it!!
email me at lawnlifewithjesse@gmail.com
Does this grass do well in GA?
Also im assuming paying companies to get something like this doesn’t work. I’ve spent and changed companies numerously and im tired of it. Always just mediocre grass and still nothing to show for the tones of money spent.
Very curious to see how this holds up over time. Are you anticipating needing to over seed every year or so with extreme summers and winters there?
If I like the way it looks, I may overseed every year just to get the prg to be the dominant grass in my side lawn.
I don't think ryegrass gets enough credit for being as hardy as it is. Yes there will be some die off in winter but I don't think it will be on a mass scale. I have plenty of prg in my backyard that has survived since the house was built.
