- Maintaining a lush, green lawn can be a daunting task for many homeowners. Despite their best efforts, many people still struggle to keep their lawn looking healthy and vibrant. There are several reasons why people fail at lawn care, and in this video, we will explore those reasons and discuss why a soil test is one of the most important things you can do for your lawn.
One of the main reasons people fail at lawn care is that they do not understand the soil their lawn is growing in. Soil type, pH, nutrient levels, and other factors can greatly affect the health and appearance of your lawn. Without knowing these details, it can be challenging to provide your lawn with the proper care it needs.
Another reason people fail at lawn care is that they do not fertilize their lawn correctly. Fertilizing your lawn is essential for maintaining healthy growth and preventing nutrient deficiencies. However, using the wrong fertilizer or applying it at the wrong time can do more harm than good.
Now that we have discussed some of the reasons why people fail at lawn care, let's talk about why a soil test is one of the most important things you can do for your lawn.
A soil test is a simple and affordable way to determine your soil's properties, such as pH, nutrient levels, and organic matter content. This information is critical for providing your lawn with the proper care it needs. Here are some of the positive things you can expect from a soil test:
1. Saves Money: Knowing your soil’s properties can help you save money on unnecessary fertilizers and other lawn care products. By understanding what nutrients your lawn needs, you can avoid over-fertilizing, which can be expensive and harmful to your lawn.
2. Saves Time: Without knowing your soil's properties, it can be challenging to diagnose lawn problems and determine the best course of action. A soil test can save you time by identifying any issues upfront and providing a clear path for proper treatment.
3. Promotes Healthy Growth: A soil test can help you identify any nutrient deficiencies and pH imbalances in your soil. By correcting these issues, you can promote healthy growth and improve the overall health of your lawn.
4. Improves Resistance to Pests and Diseases: A healthy lawn is less susceptible to pests and diseases. By providing your lawn with the proper nutrients and care, you can improve its resistance to these issues.
5. Better for the Environment: Over-fertilizing or using the wrong fertilizer can be harmful to the environment. By understanding your soil's properties, you can avoid these issues and create a more environmentally friendly lawn care plan.
Maintaining a healthy lawn can be challenging, but a soil test is one of the most important things you can do to improve your lawn's health and appearance. By understanding your soil's properties, you can provide your lawn with the proper care it needs to thrive. So if you're struggling with your lawn care, consider getting a soil test to identify any issues and develop a proper treatment plan.

Your only testing the soil that is between 5-6” deep??? Did I miss something?
I must say I really appreciated the ease you made for getting a soil test. Lots of other people’s videos just mention it, but don’t give any help in figuring out where to go for it. I want it!
Great video! You’ve convinced me to finally do a soil test this year. I want it!
Glad you're back! I missed your videos this winter.
Thanks Michael. Feels good to be back! Well at least making vids. The lawn will have to wait a while still.. thanks for watching!
Just came across your page, your doing great, your page is going to blow up! Your positive energy and editing skills are great!
Thanks Joey I appreciate that!!
Awesome video, my friend! I hope the sunshine and warmth makes it your way soon.
Finally some information regarding a lawn and area relatable (I live an Ankeny too). Thanks for the information
i've been watching your channel and man you are dialed in! love the content and keep it coming!
Just used your promo! Thank you for the guidance. First full season this year with my lawn. Can't wait to get it looking good!
Thanks for watching! The soil test should give you some guidance on where to start. Let me know if you have any questions about anything going forward. Good luck!
Nice to see you comeback from snow storm
Great job on the video Jesse!! Winter looks like it might finally be done here in Eastern Washington. I'm hoping to start the season next weekend.
Thanks! Glad someone gets to start soon! I have a few weeks at least still 😡
Ayeee been waiting for a lawn life vid! Love to see it! Good work brother!
Feels good to be back! Too bad I had to drive 4 hours away to make it happen 😂 thanks for watching like always man!
Awesome video! Surprised to see my hometown here, I live about 3 miles from Sam. The weed pressure in this area is ridiculous, glad to see another good looking lawn!
Watching this at work and you drop the that's what she said...oh man that got me hahaha! Thanks for the tips just bought a soil rod and really getting into lawn care this year. Lawn Life is my go to!
Man the dual functions of the probe were great 😂!
You never know when you're gonna need it! 🤣🤣🤣
My yard needs 101 school. Starting baby steps. Today used Celsius + certainty + 24d. Thank you for your channel. Subscribed

Soil test results back yesterday going to be lowering PH and increasing P snd K. Great content as usual thanks!
Awesome! I've seen a big difference by getting my macros closer to optimal. Thanks for watching!
Big Jes is back.. It's GO TIME in ATL, GA
Hell yeah Ced! At least someone's enjoying the spring!
Your videos are the best out there, Jesse. Editing is beyond what the others are doing. That dude's house is money, you made the right choice by heading down there. 😂 Thanks for the great content! Also, I want it!
Thanks for the awesome compliment Chris!
Thanks for the insightful information. I want it!!
I second this soil probe for anyone that is curious. It's very well built and does the job well.
Love it! Always informative watching your videos J man. Do you soil test every year?
Jesse, really enjoy your content. I have 2 questions. Why only the bottom inch of soil from the probe and not the whole profile? And curious how the TriCure AD impacted the amount and frequency of irrigation? I know, the last question is from an older vid. Thanks, from Fairbanks, Alaska.

Great video. Soil test at top of my lawn care list.
RX soil test ordered. Thanks for the code.

Great video!! Great information!! Damn Sam the super sub has his lawn dialed in and ready for the season well done! Damn Jesse that's a ton of snow man! I'll stop complaining about our 39 degree overnight temps 🤣🤣👍🏻
Thanks bro! We just got hit with 8 more inches the other night!!! I'm never going to be able to start 😭😭

Great video. I have already put down my first app of fert and pre-emergant. How long should I wait to take a sample
He's alive! Good deal.
Thanks for coming back and watching man!
Aye! MN here! Super spotty lawn here.
Up here in Little Falls man, you are setting your self up for disappointment with that Viking sweatshirt. Okay with the joke out of the way, when is spring coming 4 real!

What type of seed / grass do you recommend for central Indiana? We are starting over this year with a new lawn with irrigation and want to start it off right. We have heavy clay in this area.

Sending good vibes your way. It's not gonna be an overnight success, but have some patience and try to enjoy the ride.
Great video man 👊👊👊
Thanks for watching brother. Had to try making a soil test video as entertaining as possible. It's not easy 🤣
@@LAWNLIFE I hear ya...finishing up editing my own right now 😂
You could've just cut over to Newton from Ankeny! My lawn needs help 😢😂 Good vid, man!
I just found you going to take your advice because my lawn is a disaster and it’s embarrassing so wish me luck lol
SpringBreak here in UT... and it is dumping snow right now haha (I feel ya).
I did a soil test last year and it was super helpful to have data driven direction for my yard. Question: Does it matter when I take the sample? Should I wait for the lawn to be growing, or can I take it anytime, like right now when it is barely coming out of winter dormancy, and in-between snow storms in April!? I'd like to get this done as early as I can.
You can do it anytime. Just wanna be in that 4-6 inch range. It's best to do it before you put any fertilizer down. So definitely get at it if you want to!
I want it. Fellow Minnesotan here
If I was retired I would do this, but I have a trillion other things on my plate that need to get done.
Nice video. Would like to know what type of grass seed are you using. I like the low cut look. Is it perennial ryegrass?? Thx in advance with your input
Hey Gary, thanks for the comment. It's actually 100% Kentucky Bluegrass. Definitely pros and cons to having 100% KBG. I'm thinking about overseeding with perennial ryegrass this fall. We'll see.
Okay I have the lawn dethatched, seeded after that and then leveled it all with sand. Question is how long to wait for the first mow? I dont want to make ruts in it from the mower.
+1 for Waypoint soil test. So many youtubers recommend cheap, inaccurate soil test companies but Waypoint is legit.
I didn't want to start throwing people under the bus, but I know exactly what you're talking about and it's why I go with Waypoint. Thanks for watching!
Should I do two separate tests for a front and back yard? Thanks
Love your content! I'm lamenting this never ending winter here in Minneapolis (Shorewood) as well. I did a test on my lawn in September '22 before the deep freeze and I had a pH of 7.02-ever so slightly high. Do you think the test results are still good from September or should I test again? Also, do you think it makes sense to add Sulfur given my pH is only slightly above 7?
You're probably good to skip the test and sulfur if you wanted. Save some money and test in the spring of next year and reevaluate. Thanks for watching man!
@@LAWNLIFE thanks bro! I’ve learned a lot from your channel. Keep up the great work!
First Aussie 😁. Jesse, Spring into action. 🤠
Jesse, send that up here to Massachusetts

Great info. Immediate thumbs up after snatching the toilet paper... would give a 2nd 👍 if I could for the Micheal Scott line😅
😂😂 had to make it somewhat entertaining. Thanks for watching man!
Seems like all fertilizer here in Canada is high in Nitrogen but not much else. Second number (Phosphate) is always 0 and I have very rarely seen the third number (Potash) in the double digits. I thing the highest I have seen is the Scotts Turf Builder Fall Fertilizer which is 32-0-10. Severely limits what we can do here in Ontario
You can get 16-16-16 and 5-20-20 at peavey mart
Finally!
To bad you had to drive to Des Moines to make a video.
I agree, the soil test isn’t the “sexiest” thing, but why waste money shooting in the dark, hoping to hit the right product combinations.
Hope y’all defrost up in MN soon.
Thanks man. It's really hard to make a soil test video interesting but I tried my best 😂. The trip to Iowa was a nice change of pace actually. I didn't mind it. Thanks for watching brother!
Just bought a new house in December and the lawn is in rough shape. Biting the bullet and ordering a soil test kit. I want it.
Congratulations! Let me know if you have any questions along the way! Thanks for watching
What does the lawn have stripes on it, grass looks like lines are darker green and lines are lighter green?

As always great video Bro
Did Rx test last summer. PH @ 7.6
Going to do another test this week, how long does it take to drop PH?
Thanks bro! It takes a few seasons for it to really get the needle moving but you should see some improvement on your next test if you put down some amendments. Thanks for always watching man!
Dope video bro! i want it!
Thanks brada!
How old is this channel and why is this the first time I’ve seen it?
High quality camera and audio? Check
Clear and con I se information? Check
Minimum product selling? Check
Walking at the camera while talking with your hands? Check
I see you’ve found an area that needs high quality videos and you’ll do well - but your audience is limited to mostly male American home owners.
You could use gardening as a channel since skills are transferable.
Good luck and be patient - you obviously know what makes a channe successful so see you again at 1 mil subs

Nice.
"over the years I've suffered many defeats, dealt with a lot of frustration"....me too--I'm also a Vikings fan!
I feel this one in my soul. Just give us one damnit!
Good to see you keeping up with the content! Only other thing I'd mention (which you did correctly using plastic) is to not use a galvanized or rusted buckets/tools to collect soil cores, as that can contaminate your sample and throw off some of your micro readings. I want it! But I don't really need it, so if I win, draw again!
Thanks Jake. It's hard to remember everything, thanks for posting this in the comments to let people know what I may have missed. Appreciate you always watching!
OK, so I got my soil test results... Can you tell me what to do next? Or, perhaps make a video on how to read the soil test results and use the information to come up with the best plan for our yards? I'd send a copy of my report, but unfortunately I can't add a picture to the comments section.
How's it going? Quick question for you, grass is green as hell, applied lesco with dimension like 2 weeks ago, had no crab grass, now it's popping up, never had crab grass before, I spot treated with tenacity today, any thoughts? Ur tips have always been on the money, any thoughts? Thanks 🙏
Send me an email with pictures to lawnlifewithjesse@gmail.com
Let me know your location and grass type also.
“I’m going to save you from the domestic violence call”😂😂😂
I want it🫡. Great video as always! I graduated back in 98 with a turf degree from umass and entomology. Been managing pga golf courses for 25 years in massachusetts. Soil tests in my opinion are huge. Like Uve said many of times. I know some ppl get freaked out by turf science. I can appreciate RUclips guys that keep it simple and the guys that dive into the real science with literature from universities. My back lawn I manage with dethatching. Aerating overseeding and granular ferts no soil tests. Front lawn. The big program. Liquids diatenacious earth. Micros biostims. Whatever my soil tests says I should be correcting and my triple ryegrass looks like my green surrounds on my golf course. Keep doing what u do. Have a great season. Like ur lawn life logo. Hats and tees
Thanks for the thoughtful response man. I 100% agree with everything you said. I try to keep it simple and I really do soil tests are the best thing you can do for your lawn. Sure if you throw the kitchen sink at it, something is bound to help, but why waste the money? I could go on for hours talking about this and some people still will disagree with me. It is what is though! Thanks for all the compliments man and watching the whole vid. I really appreciate this comment!
Why only the last inch of the 6" sample?
A 9+ Minute soil probe ad … sweet
If that's what you got out of this video I don't know what to tell you
If I went down about 3 feet, would the sample still be ok?
haha. If it's any consolation.... we here in Texas also do not have a Spring. We have HOT HOT HOT almost immediately after a lovely winter.
We both can't win lol
Great video Jesse. Can't argue with your success. I won't be doing anymore soil samples for a while but do have that probe and it does come in hand for many other uses lol.👍💚🦸
Found a lot of uses for it around the house 😂😂
Really impressive especially since you are a Vikings fan. All kidding aside bravo!
After I pull out, should I push it back in ?
8 to 10 more times and you should be good 😂
I want it!
I love your videos and feel sorry for your neighbors. Why do you strip your lawn?
You mentioned needing to go 4 inches down with a probe. I’m wondering if I could kill 2 birds with one stone here and mix up the plugs from aerating and send that in. Aerator only penetrates about 2 inches, but that seems to be deep enough that it’s past the root system. Thoughts?
When will YardBrah be visiting MN for a collab with LawnLife?
lol. this is one of the best lawn vids I've ever seen.
That's some praise 😂. Glad you enjoyed it man!
I just wanna know how to get the lines in the yard

how do you effectively lower PH? mine came back at 8.1. Also low on iron, sulfur, and potassium.
Use ammonium sulfate for fertilizer (21-0-0) to lower pH. Sulfate of potash to get your potassium up. There's a lot of products out there for iron.
@@LAWNLIFE appreciate it! If my lawn is crappy right now can I nitrogen blitz it in the spring or will that stress it out too much before summer? I have a cold season lawn. Temps are still in the 70’s where I’m at.
@@masonp5083 wait til fall. I know it's hard to wait but you'll reap the benefits by waiting, just me. Good luck man. Let me know how it goes!
