Info is 100% spot on. I do one final step after the grass has stopped growing though. I wait about 3 weeks then throw 1lb p/k of N down. It goes straight to the roots as storage for the spring.
So I did this last year and since I've read a couple studies and have talked with some people who actually ran experiments on this. Both the studies and the experiments didn't show any differences between areas that got the final "winterizer" app and the areas that did not. Just things I've read, so your experience may be different. Thanks for watching BMac!
I live on Long Island, NY. Just did the NST on my lawn instead of overseeding. I put down Scotts winter fertilizer at rate of 1 pound per 1000 square feet every two weeks for 5 weeks. Last application was December 10. It is now the beginning of January and my lawn has never looked better. It is still lush and green. Neighbors lawns have already lost their color. Hopefully it continue through the spring and summer 2023. I last cut my lawn at 3 inches late November. After late November while still dark green there was no additional growth.
Wow thank you for the plan. I put down my first application on Sep 26 and a 2nd application yesterday. What a difference in my lawn already. I over seeded the lawn on Aug 20. I had a few bare spots and those spots are starting to fill in. Thank You.
Hey you got to enjoy crazy fast germination...It's only right that I get to enjoy my nitrogen push before you do. Haha. Thanks for watching like always bro!
@@sharpie132 Honestly, 2-3 weeks ago. You could still try but temps are dropping fast and the grass needs time to harden of before Frost. I am directly East of you and I overseeded KBG on 9/4. If you are overseeding with Rye Grass or TTTF than it will have a better chance to get up and semi matured before Frost, KBG is truly a full 3 weeks for full germination and 1st cut. Temps will play a big roll from now on with germination! Peace, From Upstate NY
I’m currently in Northeast Ohio. I overseeded with perennial rye back in 09/22/24. Its come in really good and thickened up my lawn pretty good. Am I safe to start applying this nitrogen blitz for the rest of the season?
Last fall, I did not do any type of lawn prep as I typically do. Coming into the spring, my lawn is not dense and thick. At the time of this message, it's April 2nd, 2023. My question is, can I overseed to thicken up the lawn and make it more dense at this point since it's early in the spring? If so, what products would you recommend? Today was my first cut, so I dethatched the lawn, gathered all the clippings in my lawn mower and now I'm ready to overseed and fertilize... Does that sound like a good plan? Is 46-0-0 too strong of a fertilizer to use on seed?
Hey Jesse, Want to ask this so I don't mess up my current progress. I dethatched and then scarrified my lawn about two and a half weeks ago. Then put down lime, seed, starter fert and topsoil about ten or 12 days ago. The grass is coming in pretty well but I'm wondering, since it's new grass, Can I still start this nitrogen regimen this year, or would it be too much for the new grass? would I run the risk of burning it? Lastly, how long should I wait before doing the first application of nitro? Thanks!
Thanks so much for your video. Can AMS be dissolved in water and applied with a sprayer? I'm looking for the amount of AMS and gal/water for 1000 sq.ft, please.
Question...And thank you.....just re seeded about 2 weeks ago after thatching and used a started fertilizer. Lawn is very think and green. Currently low 60's in North NJ. Can I use fall fertilizer now even with a re seed and started fertilizer having been applied about 2-3 weeks ago?
Great video... this year was tough on drought and summer... but i did perform core aeration+overseed+starter fert in late spring... didn't get good results i got infested with crabgrass... how ever i did follow up with milorgonatite and ironite before summer stress did ok for about 3 weeks... now i knew my last chance was this fall and sure enough august 1st i sprayed down tenacity... and end of august did core aeration+overseed+starter fertilizer.... watered it in good... and 3 weeks later got some amazing results compared to spring.. did my first mow mid September...now my question is.. Can i fertilizer with heavy nitrogen even tho my overseed just germinated... and if so do i need to water in the nitrogen to keep helping the germinated grass keep establishing..
This may have been mentioned in the comments, but since you created this video, Lowe’s has come up with its own brand or it’s an exclusive known as “Sta-Green” it says ammonium sulfate 20-0-0. And a 13 - 13-13. What’s your thoughts on that product line?
Hi Jesse, I just wanted to thank you for this video. I viewed it last year in the fall and followed your advice to the T and my lawn has really reaped the benefits from it during that season and into spring this year especially. I kid you not bro, my lawn was the one and only lawn that had early green up back in March of this year on my entire block. A lot of the small bare spots I had last year during the blitz filled in then during the process of the applications. I really can’t wait to see what you have in store for us this year man. I keep checking your channel everyday, though I’m subscribed and would receive notifications, to see if maybe you posted new videos 🤣
Hey Kasey. Thanks for the comment man. This is one of my favorite comments that I've gotten on this channel 😂. I'm glad it helped out! Where are you from? We've been dealing with shit weather all spring. I've been wanting to make videos but I haven't been able to do anything because of the weather. I'm actually going to film my first one tomorrow so hopefully content starts rolling in regularly! Sorry for such a late start to the year. I'm ready to start going! As for you being the only house with green grass on the block, that's what I noticed also after starting that fall blitz. Grass comes back stupid green in the spring!
@@Megatron_83 if you have any photos send them to lawnlifewithjesse@gmail.com I'm curious to see your green up. We're still getting occasional snow here right now..making things miserable to start the year!
I was originally going to rip out all the clumping coarse fescue and re- seed those spots and do a complete overseed on the entire lawn to fill in my thin lawn. So If I go go with the blitz method instead of overseeding, what do I do with the coarse fescue spots when I pull them out? Just spot seed those areas and continue with the blitz..?
I just planted scotts provista kentucky bluegrass 35 days ago. It is a dwarf kbg and slow to germinate and establish, 40% slower than normal kbg. The guy who sold it to me said that after it sprouts, hit it with urea nitrogen weekly. Do you recommend half lb of n per 1000sf(1lb of urea per sf) per week? Ty in advance.
I just dethatched and overseeded today...my lawn took a killing from army worms this year so I have lots of dead and thin areas ...can i fertilize right away or wait for the seed to germinate?
How often can you apply this to new fescue grass this fall? Seeded 7 weeks ago. Needed cutting twice already. Keeping it 4 inches. Applied starter and again 2 weeks ago when most of it was over 4 inches tall right after first cut. I have a bunch of urea granules. 30 0 0. 10% is slow release. Water with timers. But now deep watering.
I just overseeded my very patchy bare lawn two weeks ago with TTTF. It is coming in pretty nice now. Can I start this nitrogen program with new TTTF grass?
Can you go over starter fert vs regular fert? I'm doing an overseed on an established and from popular consensus it's best to put that down a week or so after seeding so the old grass doesn't out grow the new stuff. Does starter fert act the same as regular fert for already established grass or should I get something different for the established grass down the line?
What you're really trying to give the new grass with starter fert is the phosphorus that's in it. Phosphorus helps stimulate root growth, that's why people throw down the starter fert. If you've done a soil test and your phosphorus levels are ideal, you don't even need to put down the start fert. As for what to use for your established grass going forward, I would recommend getting a soil test so you know what you need or don't need. Otherwise you're just throwing down and hoping at that point (ignore the Nitrogen levels in the soil test though, you want to concentrate on everything else because nitrogen comes and goes so fast). I should just make a video on this like you said lol. Let me know if you're confused by any of this.
Startert usually has fast release nitrogen. For purpose of feeding the lawn with enough Nitrogen to get it through the winter you'll need a fertilizer that's slow release in Nitrogen that way you're not just pushing top growth but giving your lawn enough nutrients to withstand the winter and spring up nicely.
I'm in Virginia. In October I started a new lawn. I used Kentucky Bluegrass and I put down starter fertilizer because my nitrogen was low. Its now the end of October and the grass is about 3 inches tall but light green. I was told to put down a winterguard fertilizer but should I use the ammonia sulphate instead or use both?
Great video, thanks. Can we use the bags of fertiliser that farmers use on lawns? These would be far cheaper than the rip off merchants selling the same product in small colourful boxes..I’m new to this and starting a lawn mowing service here in Ireland. Thanks.
As of today, it's September 28 in the greater Detroit area of Michigan. Temps are starting to change. Is it too late to put down nitrogen to the lawn? I am on 4 acres of lawn.
Thanks for doing these videos it's super helpful for me in ND. Most of these are for grass in Florida. With this fall nitro blitz should I do an overseed in there as well, or is the nitro gonna fill in the bare spots all by itself
The reason I don't like doing that is because the max you can put down .2 lbs of nitrogen if you're putting it down foliar. Otherwise you need to water it in immediately if you're putting more than that down. It's risky business in my opinion
If you want to spoon feed it, I would do it that way. But for really pounding the N, I would use granular. Too risky to put on liquid N in large amounts without watering it in immediately
Should I wait to use these products if I just had my lawn aerated, dethatched and overseeded? It still looks like bare , dry spots after a week. We’ve been using our sprinkler system every other day.
I live in the DFW area and the temps are in the highs of mid 70s and lows in the mid 40-50s. Is it too late to apply 46-0-0 to my Bermuda lawn? @lawnlife
If I want to apply the urea or ammonium sulfate by spraying, how much water do you use to dissolve 0.5 lbs to cover 1,000 sf? A gallon of water, 2 gallons...? I've watched several videos of people mixing products to spray on their lawn, but all they show is their bucket of water and mixing in whatever they happen to be spraying at the time. They never say how much water they're using, or how much territory they're spraying. It's all quite confusing.
If you get a fertilizer with a slow release component is there a risk of burning your lawn or just wasting nitrogen since we are so close to winter? I’m in MN too and picked up the menards 3rd app fertilizer which is 30% nitrogen and like 9% slow release. I’m wanting to hammer my lawn hard to get it to thicken up if I can.
I will be getting my yard aerated mid September and then I will be overseeding with Kentucky blue grass. Do you recommend any specific nitrogen treatment while overseeding or should starter fertilizer be used instead? Thanks!
Stick with the starter fert or anything with phosphorus. If you have high phosphorus levels you probably do not need anything, but you can put down starter to be safe
It just seems there’s a lot of nitrogen from a lot of differ t products. You have great videos, but you talk about ammonia sulfate, urea, Sistine. You talk about granular vs diluted and being sprayed. You talk about different times of the year, when to, when not to. You have great knowledgeable video as. You should put together some type of grass planner, for different types of grasses or at least Bermuda. There’s so much about fertilizing, I’m just not sure what and when. Thank you, and once again great video
I just over-seeded my entire lawn with Kentucky Bluegrass from Gerten's ~3-4 weeks ago. Should I still start putting Urea down on it now? I didn't use a starter fert. after broadcast so I though I might do that now. Thoughts? I also purchased a soil test kit so I can check for N-P-K. That's never been done.
The starter fert recommendation is mainly for the phosphorus in it. So if you don't know your phosphorus levels, I would definitely put down to starter just to be safe. After that you can start feeding the grass small amounts of N every two weeks or so (0.25 lbs per K)
Hey 1st time view on your channel, great job! I'm looking forward to see what else you have been doing in this awesome community! this spring was my 1st lawn renovation, and its been great! A lot of work in the beginning but it's getting a bit easier now. I am also from this Great state of Minnesota (twins cities metro area). And it looks like you too survived the drought very well, great looking lawn! Great advise!
@@LAWNLIFE thank you! If we don't have a sprinkler system do you have to wait for rain in-between granular applications? Wouldn't the granules just accumulate and cause burn if it didn't rain for a month? Or will morning dew be enough?
@@LAWNLIFE Tried several times but YT isn't allowing links or even item number to be posted here. I'll send you the link via email listed on your channel.
Did a lawn Reno. Two weeks in. I will start to spoon feed with Urea in about 2 weeks since I put down starter fert at seed down. I just bought a brand new spray mate 2.5 gallon sprayer. How do I calibrate that thing? I have some tee jet tips I purchased as well. I’m new at spraying so don’t really know my pace or anything. Should I use the sprayer or just use something like my handheld seed spreader?? The hand spreader sounds easier lol
For young grass I would definitely use granular to start. I wouldn't spray anything on them for at least 60 days unless you're going to water in right away. The best way to calibrate your sprayer is to fill it up with water and practice going different speeds in your lawn until you're consistently covering your area and ending up empty or very close to it. You'll never be consistently perfect, but you definitely want to be close at least.
@@LAWNLIFE so my Scott’s seed spreader is fine for spreading the urea? I’m definitely going the hand held spreader route. I’m not about walk all over my lawn trying to get the settings right with the new seedlings.
Wait. You don't wait you're current grass growing out of control and smothering the new baby grass. Also you don't want to have to mow and potentially ripping out any new seedlings
@@hambocards6555 I need to make a video on this. Everyone is asking. Haha. I would start feeding it nitrogen shortly after the first mow. I went with 0.5 lbs to start and have been feeding it 0.25 lbs every two weeks after that.
I would wait until you've mowed once or twice before throwing down N. For young grass I would feed it 0.5 initially and 0.25 every two weeks after that. You don't want to push young grass that much. It still is just trying to establish at this point.
@@LAWNLIFE When would you recommend stopping this? I have been putting down .5 every other week. Today would be my day to put more down but with the temps getting lower (in minneapolis) im not sure if it will help at all. Also do you use urea as your winterization fert as well?
Thanks. Great Video. Would you recommend detaching and/or aerating prior to putting down the fertilizer? Just to add, i have a lawn that has a lot thin areas, brown areas etc.

When do you put down the Fall application for KBG lawns?
I will be getting my yard aerated mid September and then I will be overseeding with Kentucky blue grass. Do you recommend any specific nitrogen treatment while overseeding or should starter fertilizer be used instead? Thanks!
Stick with the starter fert or anything with phosphorus. If you have high phosphorus levels you probably do not need anything, but you can put down starter to be safe
@@LAWNLIFE Thanks!
Should you aerate and reseed after nitrogen? Or before. I really want to overseed. My lawn has a lot of bare spots and needs tlc bad. I am in NY.
Is this a good idea for hybrid bermuda? Yard looks legit
Thank you, and once again great video
do you have to water the lawn immediately or a bit later after each blitz? when I can mow after the blitz?
Does nitrogen stain concrete? Just curious.
Jesse, won't .5 lbs of nitrogen per 1000 sq ft burn if you do it every 2 weeks?
Great stuff! I am throwing fert every two weeks. My lawn is coming back nicely with water and fert. Can’t wait to see the real results in the spring
For how many weeks do I put it down in the fall....4 or 6 weeks total?
Awesome video man I just picked up some 46-0-0 should I use some iron with it?
Do you have a degree in agronomy or what is your back round?
Great advise!
what kid of mower do you have
Thanks for the advice and great content 👌 really appreciate the help
Great plan dude.
If we wanted to apply Urea with a backpack sprayer how would you go about doing that? Use 0.25 pounds per 1k per week and water it in??
Yes. After 4 hours water it in. You're safe from burn at .25 but don't go any higher than that. That's the max
@@LAWNLIFE thank you! If we don't have a sprinkler system do you have to wait for rain in-between granular applications? Wouldn't the granules just accumulate and cause burn if it didn't rain for a month? Or will morning dew be enough?
@@stealthcomp14 it definitely needs to be watered in by rain or irrigation for it to work
I actually bought ammonium sulfate at home depot
Weird, I've never seen it there and I can't find it on their website. Maybe they don't carry it here. Can you send me a link?
@@LAWNLIFE
Tried several times but YT isn't allowing links or even item number to be posted here. I'll send you the link via email listed on your channel.
@@spicemasterii6775 that works. I havent received anything yet. You can message me on Instagram also if that's easier. Lawn_life_with_jesse
@@LAWNLIFE Sorry. Just sent it to you.
Me too it was pretty inexpensive too 👍🏻
Did a lawn Reno.
@@tite732 yeah use the hand spreader. Worry about the sprayer next year after your lawn is established
Does starter fertilizer have nitrogen in it enough for fall growth?
If you have the extra cash just go buy the Scott’s fall fert
I'm going to dethatch and overseed this next week. Should i put down nitrogen down now or wait until after the new seed germinates?
Wait. You don't wait you're current grass growing out of control and smothering the new baby grass. Also you don't want to have to mow and potentially ripping out any new seedlings
@@LAWNLIFE Thanks. On years that you do fall seeding, would you wait until spring for nitrogen?
@@hambocards6555 I need to make a video on this. Everyone is asking. Haha. I would start feeding it nitrogen shortly after the first mow. I went with 0.5 lbs to start and have been feeding it 0.25 lbs every two weeks after that.
Can you put down a liquid nitrogen?
Def fluid for urea
i stick with slow/organic fertilizers. using the typical fast/synthetic fertilizers has always resulted in some lawn burn despite my best efforts.
It's very hard to burn the lawn when using rates of 0.5 lbs per 1000 sq ft and lower, but I totally understand if you're nervous about it.
I just overseeded my lawn, when would you recommend me putting down .5 lb of nitrogen per week?
Subscribed because you're in Minnesota!
