Here in the U.S. you can buy sifted top soil that is also dried and kept dry before and after they bag it..Most of best top soil companies use this method as the sifting helps elimate weed seeds from the top soil also.
I've a compost spreader like that, when the compost/soil is damp it does sometimes ball up as it rolls, so not all those would have been stones some would have been wet balls of soil. Even so you want a fine spread and not clumps, those I'd just put on a flower bed or under a hedge.
Where I work were throwing lots of the mat you use out so I bagged myself one 👍🏻 Did all the steps in this video a couple of weeks back but used a top soil, sand and seedling compost mix. Hi Robbie another great and informative vid. What agreat tip to throw seed into the roller with the soil. This is the first time I have saw you do this. I will defo be using this tip at the end of the year. Thanks Robbie.
Thatch is a pain in the A for St Augustine yards. I usually just mow extremely low in early March with the catch bag on. I use that brown dried thatch in my compost pile. Use scotts 3 day and mow every week raising the cut a notch every week until you have a 4 inch cut. Remember St Augustine yards do great when kept about 3 to 4 inches.
Why would you aerate prior to dethatching. Doing it that way could drop weed seeds into the holes you just opened up? Here is the U.S. Poa Annua and Poa Trivialis runs rampid even when you spray pre immergent and post weed killer... Crab grass is bad here also in Upstate N.Y. where I live..

Hi! I'm new to the gardening journey and doing loads of research on lawn care - what month are you doing this in? Now in March, I'm waiting for a dry day to scarify then looking to put down iron sulphate then seed 2-3 weeks after this. Will the iron be out by then do you think as I know it effects the seeds. (Or should I just forget about the iron stage?) Thanks a lot!
Thank you very much for your video. Since watching it, I have gradually learned a lot about lawn knowledge, which is very helpful. Only slowly did I realize that my lawn had been encroached on by Poa annua. The area is very large, and I always thought it was normal before. Now I would like to ask, how should I choose to replant grasses that are more ornamental according to your video. I am in Birmingham, the lawn is about 110 square meters, most of it is well lit, because there are trees around it, a small part is shaded. The soil drainage is relatively good, there is no water accumulation, and a small part has green moss, which I think is too acidic. Can you give me some advice on grass seed selection for my situation? Thank you so much.
@@Premier_lawns_official Follow your video step by step to learn, there are a lot of places that need to be replanted, do you have grass seeds to recommend?
I wouldn't get too hung up on the size, wide is good and you will get done faster, it you buy something small its not going to have the weight behind it to get the job done
How do you feel about pregerminating the grass seeds. I recently came across some videos of people soaking the seeds for about 3 days (draining and refilling every 12 hours) before spreading them. Seems to make sense to get them going before placing them in the a yard.
Hi Robbie, great video as always. If you had the mat, would you use it before or after the lute? Will just using the lute give good seed to soil contact, or should you press it in with your feet after?
I have topdressed my lawn with sharp sand and topsoil and seeded it as it was very patchy after this winter (the worst state it has ever been) but what I have ended up with is a load of small stones on lawn from the sharp sand , looking for any advice here shall I leave them or try and get them out ? Will they affect the growth of seed ?
Small stones that make their way into your lawn will help with drainage Just be careful not to leave bigger stones on the lawn that might break a window or fly in all directions the first time you mow the lawn That's not advice I can give, so just use common sense and you should be grand
Great video. You make it look too easy lol Can you tell me the name of the "open roller" you put the seed and top soil in (then pushed around the yard)? It's a little bit different of a spreader than what I've seen.
Hi Robbie, scarified, seeded, top dressed and watered in seaweed this weekend just gone ) last weekend in Sept. Live just so London so hopefully no frost for a while. i made one of your fancy mats… brilliant My only worry is I used Jacks magic for the top dressing instead of top soil. Do you think that will be ok or do 8 need to put some top soil on now also. Cheers Bob
Hi Robbie, you say on your website that you use a grass seed from barenbrug that's a 30 30 20 20 mix but do you know what it is called? They have so many blends! Thanks and keep up the good work!
Robbie thank you for another excellent vido. will be great to watch this grow and mature to a fine lawn. I have a miners lamp for your next job if you need it mate!
I do all of this but I get little results. Very patchy. A soil test shows my fertilizer levels are fine, organic content 3.5%, and a 60% sand, 6% clay, 34% silt mix "sandy loam" designation My lawn gets a lot of shade, about 6 hours direct sun Seeing lawns like this makes me so jealous, I wonder what I could ever do
Maybe not getting enough water to get the seeds to grow. Choosing the wrong type of grass. Over or under fertilizer Cutting at the wrong height or not frequently enough, could be any one of these or a mixture
Excellent but I would have used a spreader for the grass seed only, so you know its 35 or 50 grams, then used the Lanzy to spread Jacks Black compost on top. Otherwise brilliant.
Why did you scarify when you said there was the right amount of thatch in the plugs? Should I scarify if I dethatched and overseeded in Autumn and now it is a bit patchy?
It's about maintaining a healthy thatch layer, it also helps control the moss. Scarifying in itself helps a lawn to thicken up, you can 1000 percent still scarify now, though if we hit a dry spell in for a week or too you will have to water
Any advice for a yard that suffers from 4-6 dogs trying to dig to China? (Or just the wear and tear of that many dogs)??? My daughter (with her dogs) is tearing the crap out if my yard... My FRONT yard.
There isn't much you can do. Maybe fence part of it off one week and then the next week fence another section off to spread the wear if there is enough room
@@Premier_lawns_official what about things other than "grass"... Clover, or other ..... Something? Would anything hold up better? It so bad I'm considering laying hardware cloth (half inch square metal fencing like chicken wire but stronger) and reseeding in top of that. -after filling in and leveling it back out. She's taking them on vacation for two weeks but that no where near long enough for any new grass to establish or recover.
I had dogs that did that. I just kept piling large limestone rocks on top of their favorite dig sites. Eventually they gave up digging but now my yard is totally covered in limestone. 😆
Assuming there is growth you can apply weed control all year around However, a general rule in the UK is March to October The earlier or later in the year it should still work but if there isn't much growth it takes much longer to control the weeds and the lawn looks worse for longer as they die off
My yard would take LOTS of work to get it to even grow weeds. As it is, nothing grows in the front yard. It's heavily shaded, and not even weeds will grow in most of it. Also, the "soil" is basically just clay with a tiny bit of dirt mixed in. Digging in it is very much a chore. I once rented a gas-powered, 2-man auger to dig a hole so I could move a tree. That auger even had trouble getting through that ground. I fear making it so grass would grow would cost way too much.
Biggest name for them is from landzie, they are the original one but if you look there are many other manufacturers out there mostly Chinese knock offs but if had luck with a few different ones just do a search on top dress spreaders
Just regular top soil as opposed to compost? No value seen in adding organic matter subsoil post aeration? Also seems interesting that scarification occurred after aeration as opposed to before. Genuinely curious about the decision-making here.
It is argued that by scarifying/dethatching first, it removes the thatch/debris layer and provides a clearer service area for the aeration@@Premier_lawns_official
Think of all that life (micro organisms) that live in that soil. I'm returning it to the lawn. A lot of people leave the cores on the lawn for this reason That looks too unsightly for my liking so this is a compromise
What i hate about detatching is how awful the lawn look in some areas. all yellow and stressed out for about 2 weeks :( but afterwards it looks the best
Depends on your weather conditions. In Spring soil temperature need to be above 55 degrees to germinate. If you seed too late in the Spring hot temperatures could burn up your seedlings if your don't water a few times a day. Fall is the best time as temperature are warm not hot and the soil temperature should be well above 55 degrees. Depending on grass type you should try to get atleast 1 inch of water a week into the ground but if not definitely get a good misting of water on the seed 3 times a day if possible for best germination. Good luck...
I'm in the UK, well Northern Ireland to be exact. I do a lot of seeding in May, a lot of places in the UK start seeded in march or April but we can still get a good frost right up until may here in Belfast It will really depend on your local weather, I seed lawns but will also have to water them if we hit a dry spell. As the op said above, fall is a great time to seed lawns September is my favourite month to seed lawns
If ive used Weedol selectice weed killer, a week ago in the north east of england. Do you think i'll manage an overseed in another 3 weeks or should i wait longer
How about you first throw some seed around on the ground and then you pass over with that roller ? 😕 Your seed will be more evenly spread and then covered with a layer of top soil
The landzie does make the renovations easier on the back as well as top dressing. Every time I see it used the more I want to get one. Just got to convince the other half sadly 😔😆
I bought the equivalent from The monster shop, I liked it more because the clips are on the sides and less likely to brake. I wouldn’t be without it now and it’s slightly cheaper.

It will depend on the grass, I don't think you can renovate warm season grass the same way, this is a fescue, AMG, rye lawn
Do you ever recycle the core plugs and mix with the top soil?
seems like a waste otherwise
One of the reasons I'm hollow tine aerating is to remove thatch, there is no point adding it back in...

Getting rid of the shade or reducing it would make the most sense by the sound of it
How much top soil kilograms per m2 top soil do you use?
I was hoping to see the results.
Hello! What is the name of the tool you use to appky the topdress? Can’t find anything like it!
Biggest name for them is from landzie, they are the original one but if you look there are many other manufacturers out there mostly Chinese knock offs but if had luck with a few different ones just do a search on top dress spreaders
When ever i seed the lawn it becomes a bird buffet, how do you keep birds away?
The birds will always get a few. There is plenty to go around 💪🫴
Just regular top soil as opposed to compost? No value seen in adding organic matter subsoil post aeration? Also seems interesting that scarification occurred after aeration as opposed to before. Genuinely curious about the decision-making here.
What's wrong with doing the aeration first?
The soil I used was a premium mix.
It is argued that by scarifying/dethatching first, it removes the thatch/debris layer and provides a clearer service area for the aeration@@Premier_lawns_official
Think of all that life (micro organisms) that live in that soil. I'm returning it to the lawn.
A lot of people leave the cores on the lawn for this reason
That looks too unsightly for my liking so this is a compromise
Fair enough, that is very much how I rationalized your processes in my head as well. Thanks for the reply @@Premier_lawns_official
@@user-kr9wy9oo5s I have done probably close to a 1000 lawns like this
What shrubs are those? Or hedge I guess.
What i hate about detatching is how awful the lawn look in some areas. all yellow and stressed out for about 2 weeks :( but afterwards it looks the best
were you from sham? watching from ballymena hi

When do I do this? Early Spring or late fall?
Depends on your weather conditions. In Spring soil temperature need to be above 55 degrees to germinate. If you seed too late in the Spring hot temperatures could burn up your seedlings if your don't water a few times a day. Fall is the best time as temperature are warm not hot and the soil temperature should be well above 55 degrees. Depending on grass type you should try to get atleast 1 inch of water a week into the ground but if not definitely get a good misting of water on the seed 3 times a day if possible for best germination. Good luck...
I'm in the UK, well Northern Ireland to be exact. I do a lot of seeding in May, a lot of places in the UK start seeded in march or April but we can still get a good frost right up until may here in Belfast
It will really depend on your local weather, I seed lawns but will also have to water them if we hit a dry spell. As the op said above, fall is a great time to seed lawns
September is my favourite month to seed lawns
The first time I scarfed my lawn it was the best thing I ever did, the second time I did it it was the worst thing ever I did.
@@Moondoggy1941 the weather can play a big part, ideally you want it to be warm and damp...
If ive used Weedol selectice weed killer, a week ago in the north east of england. Do you think i'll manage an overseed in another 3 weeks or should i wait longer
You could try... Might take, might not
8 weeks according to the lawnsmith.
@@petertr2000 Thanks for this!
I would have thought that if you bought screened top soil it would be free from stones Etc. I have had all sorts in my bags of compost.
It's really difficult to get a good screened topsoil where I live and also a ton bag would have been way too much
How about you first throw some seed around on the ground and then you pass over with that roller ? 😕 Your seed will be more evenly spread and then covered with a layer of top soil
what do i do if i dont have lawn mowrr
Scissors? ✂️ ✂️
What was step 8 again?
What if the seeds doesn’t match, it gonna mess up the yard
Awesome video. How many more years of busting your butt? You are a beast 🤛👊🏽
do the seeds attract mice etc
The landzie does make the renovations easier on the back as well as top dressing. Every time I see it used the more I want to get one. Just got to convince the other half sadly 😔😆
Not a matter of who’s gonna let you, it’s who’s gonna stop you.
Graham, you need to start your own channel mate.. you've plenty of knowledge.. and you might get given one to review ;-)
@LawnRight Lawn Care Never say Never, but quite happy for you and Robbie to lead the way for now 😁
I bought the equivalent from The monster shop, I liked it more because the clips are on the sides and less likely to brake. I wouldn’t be without it now and it’s slightly cheaper.
It's very satisfying to use. Saves my back no end
