The trouble with grass the roots don't go far down, hence in dry weather grass will go yellow fast because the grass can't send its roots down to find water. Also corse grass don't like getting cut short say less than one inch before they get stressed. Fine grass like bent can be cut short like a bowling green. Meadow grass seeds it's self very quickly and needs cut ofter and cut short.

Hi! So, if i do the 1/3 rule, but my lawn is a bit overgrown is areas (need to start a good routine!), then so i only cut 1/3 and leave it, and cut the next day 1/3 more? How can i even out / get my lawn to the desired height followingg the 1/3 rule. What schedule should i mowe it? IMPORTANT: i mowe usingn a hand roto-trimmer. Just so you have all the relavant info! :) Thanks! Live the vid, hoping to make my gardens lawn look as beautiful as yours!!
I've taken on mowing a lawn that has a base that's pretty much flattened building land. It dries hard and has very little goodness in it. The lawn is poor quality generally quite yellow, tends to harbour unwanted growth and has a number of ant nests on it. I've tried to make some improvement on a part of it (sprayed off, tilled, levelled and re-seeded) which has helped on that part a little, but what should be my main step. I was intending to recommend heavy aeration (hollw tine aerator) followed by top dressing with seed included at say 50/50 sand and topsoil. But it's expensive and I'd love to know its the correct step before charging for aerator hire. Re ant Hills, I've started using a post auger to pull out the nest then fix around the hole for level with the same mix. Hoping once the base gets better, ants will be discouraged. Any thoughts?
If the highest setting on my mower, results it more than a third being removed, what is your advice, besides not letting it get that long in the future?
Hey Rob, what do you think of robotic mowers? Surely they dont stripe anywhere near as good as a cylinder mower, but from my experience it helps me when I am not able to maintain my mowing schedule. Another thing to mention when mowing is surely to not trust the height adjustment printed on the mowers - my mower goes down to 25mm on the 35mm setting - so rather double check by just mowing a small patch first than risking scalping everything. :)
Robo mowers are the future unless you want stripes. The best way to measure the height of cut is to use a ruler or tape measure and drop it into the lawn
Hi Robbie, great vid again. The one third rule is a good one. My question is, if the grass is quite long, how long do you leave it between each cut to get it down to the height you want?
Hi Patrick, good question. Leaving it 2 or 3 days should be good. However, we all live in the real world and it's not always possible... Just don't make a habit of breaking the one third rule and you will be grand
Weeds do aereate you lawn so they are not bad. Having strictly grass leafs is not an easy task and it becomes hyper high maintenance. Plus is no good for anything. Pollinizers are good for your whole garden, so I´d say let some "weeds" around long enough but under check :-)
To get the length of lawn down from long to short, and following the one third cut rule, how soon after the first trim can I cut the next third off and so on until I get to the lawn height I'm after? thanks
Chris, the shorter it is cut the more often it needs cut. Take a golf green, it's cut every day at a height of 3-5mm A lawn that has been fertilised, you might be cutting it every 5 - 10 days, an average lawn might only get cut every 14 days. Cutting heights for something like this might be 25-50mm A lawn that never gets any attention that might be even more. 80mm It depends on what you are cutting it with and the height of cut.
Okay now I got it!... *_To produce a bountiful crop of and distribute weed seeds throughout the lawn, make sure to cut less often._* Mower can be turned into a great weed seed spreader by operating with the shoot bag fully detached. Also after rain, heavier the operator and more total scale weight wheeled equipment measures. The more shrinkage of soils potential moisture porosity will be caused under wheel ruts and footsteps. And a well compacted soil is the key forcing tripping tree roots to grow on top of ground level. As a result of deprived oxygen levels below grade. This way the most difficult weed management level is easily obtained by allowing taproot a winding path butting right up against shallow thickening tree roots. Further anchoring a trusty dandelion or weed tree sprout faithfully guaranteed to return postage due...Enjoy!
Hi there, I’m all new in lawns. I have the seeds and soil . And lawn food. I added the lawn food and the seed and the soil. Some parts are lovely greeny and others totally deserted. What can I do?
Sir, currently my lawn grows with pace 2cm per week. In order to get from 8cm to the 4-6cm it means 3 cuts per week with the 1/3 rule. This is ok I guess?
That will depend on the type of grass and what you are cutting it with and how often Go onto any local council site, parks even by the road. How much thatch is on that grass? I bet they aren't lifting the grass.
Robbie thank you again for your wise words of wisdom. I have to say I am really looking forward to this year as my lawn is looking great thanks to your advice. Oh yes the force of the mower is strong with you my obi one. We all would have Succumbed to buying artificial grass, but no the force of the mower is strong!!!
Another great video, Robbie. Curious as to the reason why you're not a fan of the automowers - wouldn't they be perfect for the "little and often" way of cutting grass? With a traditional mower, I might only get out to cut the lawn once a week (thereby having to take a bigger cut) whereas with an automower, it could be programmed to cut every day and in doing so, only take a very small cut? Thanks for your advice.
Instructions unclear, I smashed the like button using a hammer and now my phone is broken. Will gently tap the like button in future 🤣 Great video, thank you.
Hi Robbie love your videos and making slow progress on getting my lawn looking good . Having a major problem with dandelions been digging them out but they are getting out of control. Any advice on a good product to control them have about an acre and a bit thank you
My mower even on its highest setting takes off waay too much. More than half I reckon. I feel like it's because the wheels sink in too much. Too much thatch maybe?
I love letting the wild flowers and local garlic grow wild. My backyard is basically a field until I mow it. No watering or fertilizer. I'll cut it at what ever height. My neighbor does the "lines" and just BLASTS it with fertilizer and cuts it so short you can't see where your mowing. I don't do a damn thing except mow and edge and my yard looks great. Makes me think he's got nothing better going on 🤣

Thanks Robbie 👍
Cheers Chris 👍😁
Another great video. Happy New Year Robbie👍🏻👏
Happy new year to you too 👍😁
Wow thanks,,I learned a lot from this dude,,
Thanks for the comments 🙂🙏
Thanks! Live the vid, hoping to make my gardens lawn look as beautiful as yours!!
What a good lean seed mix I want a fine lawn but have kids so need something tough any suggestions
To reduce overall height when can you mow it again after taking off the first third?
Beautiful accent ❤️
☺️☺️☺️
Hey, great video! If your grass is long and you follow the 1/3 rule, how long must you leave it before you cut another 1/3? Thank you 🙏🏼
Occasionally not following the one third rule won't harm your lawn if for example you go on holiday and come back to a really long lawn
Our lawn is not level. It has pockets here and there and is very uneven. What are the best tips for 1/3 rule when the grass length varies so much?
Great tips …Happy New Year. 🍻🍻
Happy new year Peter ❤️
Hi Robbie, great vid again. The one third rule is a good one. My question is, if the grass is quite long, how long do you leave it between each cut to get it down to the height you want?
Hi Patrick, good question. Leaving it 2 or 3 days should be good. However, we all live in the real world and it's not always possible...
Just don't make a habit of breaking the one third rule and you will be grand
@@Premier_lawns_official cheers Robbie. Keep up the excellent postings.
Great question Patrick - that is what I was going to ask. Cheers
Leave it about knee high just take off the top never get brown
Brilliant, thank you 😊
Glad you enjoyed it
Good advice as always Robbie.👍
Thanks Neil, I always like to start the year with something easy 😊
Another great video Robbie! I wish more of my customers would stick to the 1/3rd rule, the lawns I treat would look much better for it!!
Sometimes it's hard to explain to folks 😂
Good advice.
Glad you enjoyed it!
My problem in Oz is black beetles eating the roots and 40 degree summers! Lawn seriously stressed! 🙄
That sounds a nightmare, luckily we don't have anything like that in Northern Ireland!
Yup, White bettels don't
Weeds do aereate you lawn so they are not bad.
Having strictly grass leafs is not an easy task and it becomes hyper high maintenance. Plus is no good for anything. Pollinizers are good for your whole garden, so I´d say let some "weeds" around long enough but under check :-)
Was looking at a robot mower but I love mowing too much 🤣
Me too!
You still have to cut the edges!
To get the length of lawn down from long to short, and following the one third cut rule, how soon after the first trim can I cut the next third off and so on until I get to the lawn height I'm after? thanks
Chris, the shorter it is cut the more often it needs cut. Take a golf green, it's cut every day at a height of 3-5mm
A lawn that has been fertilised, you might be cutting it every 5 - 10 days, an average lawn might only get cut every 14 days. Cutting heights for something like this might be 25-50mm
A lawn that never gets any attention that might be even more. 80mm
It depends on what you are cutting it with and the height of cut.
Okay now I got it!... *_To produce a bountiful crop of and distribute weed seeds throughout the lawn, make sure to cut less often._*
Mower can be turned into a great weed seed spreader by operating with the shoot bag fully detached.
It is best to cut 2/3rds off. This way you won't need to cut it as often. (JF)
😂😂😂😂🙂
Happy new year robbie
Same to you Joseph 🙂
Hi, can you suggest the best way to kill flat leave weeds in my lawn?
A selective broad leaf weed killer 👍
Hi there, I’m all new in lawns. I have the seeds and soil . And lawn food.
I added the lawn food and the seed and the soil. Some parts are lovely greeny and others totally deserted. What can I do?
Great video. After you've cut your grass by one third how soon can you gut it again to get it shorter please?
Sir, currently my lawn grows with pace 2cm per week. In order to get from 8cm to the 4-6cm it means 3 cuts per week with the 1/3 rule. This is ok I guess?
I have to correct the photosynthesis formula here... Its not Co2 & water but Co2 & light that Chlorophyll uses to create carbohydrates... 👍
Thanks for the feedback 🙂 👍
Cheers Robbie. How is mulching supposed to improve a lawn? Doesn’t mulching also encourage thatch build up?
That will depend on the type of grass and what you are cutting it with and how often
Go onto any local council site, parks even by the road.
Hahahaha Dave very good 😂😂😂😂
Thanks for the information mate very handy to know Jimmy d , Australia
Australia, wow. Thanks for the comments 🙂😊
The one Reel mower looks like a Jacobsen 22” tournament cut…
I’m looking for a repair part for mine and can’t find a source.
Can you help?
Old.mowers are hard to get parts for at the best of times. Mine is around.30 years old
It's as if he's getting paid every time he says 1/3... 😉
Seriously, great info and thank you.
😂😂😂👍
When do you verti cut while keeping the 1/3 rule in mind?
Verti cutting is different to mowing
Another great video, Robbie.
Curious as to the reason why you're not a fan of the automowers - wouldn't they be perfect for the "little and often" way of cutting grass? With a traditional mower, I might only get out to cut the lawn once a week (thereby having to take a bigger cut) whereas with an automower, it could be programmed to cut every day and in doing so, only take a very small cut?
Thanks for your advice.
Instructions unclear, I smashed the like button using a hammer and now my phone is broken. Will gently tap the like button in future 🤣 Great video, thank you.
😂😂😂😂👍🙏
What kind of grass that when you use the ruler in this video??????
Dwarf rye and fescue 🙂👍
Great video very helpful , liked and subscribed
Hey Dan, welcome to the channel :)
@@Premier_lawns_official thanks i do garden maintenance work myself so this vido has been amazing thanks ,keep the great videos coming
@@dankmdunn4725 👍👍👍
Hi Robbie love your videos and making slow progress on getting my lawn looking good . Having a major problem with dandelions been digging them out but they are getting out of control. Any advice on a good product to control them have about an acre and a bit thank you
Farm shop, ask them for some selective weed control
My mower even on its highest setting takes off waay too much. More than half I reckon.
I feel like it's because the wheels sink in too much. Too much thatch maybe?
That is the most likely option 👍
I love letting the wild flowers and local garlic grow wild. My backyard is basically a field until I mow it. No watering or fertilizer. I'll cut it at what ever height. My neighbor does the "lines" and just BLASTS it with fertilizer and cuts it so short you can't see where your mowing. I don't do a damn thing except mow and edge and my yard looks great.
Makes me think he's got nothing better going on 🤣
Sounds great 😁
