  • We are really doing it! We are crossing from the Canary Islands to the Carribean. Now we just need to get through the thousand and one boat jobs and stock Teulu up with enough food to last four people a month and we should be all set. Right! Right?

    About Us
We are Becka and Zach, a couple who, in 2020, dreamt of sailing off into the big blue. Trouble is- we were in a pandemic, had a university degree to finish, on a student budget, only had ever sailed dingies, oh and didn’t have a boat. The dream seemed not only unrealistic but pretty insane.
However, we worked hard, finished our degrees, worked as many hours as physically possible, saved with all our might, got experience and in March 2022 bought our very own sailboat, Teulu. Having little sailing experience and being a young couple, we have encountered a tonne of hurdles and made plenty of mistakes! but for every downfall, there has always been a reason to dust ourselves off and carry on.
We hope you can join us as we sail around the world and keep #bloodydoingit
    #sailing #boatlife

Me and my wife can’t wait until we have our boat. The part she’s looking forward to the most is lists ….. she loves a good list to check off. Seriously on a Smonday ( the Sunday that should be relaxing but you’ve got school clothes to wash and lunch boxes to prep so you have at least half a chance Monday morning ) I get them all over my fridge. I made the mistake of filling in the ticks in for her once 😔 … I’ve learnt my lesson since

Watching you prepare for the crossing was amazing. Such organization and such a long list of things to do. La Vagabonde was the first channel I started following 8-9 years ago. They just didn't have the stuff that is available today. More seat of the pants. You guys have done a wonderful job, just what you have for safety is excellent. And of course Becka up the mast 3 or 4 times. 🙂

A real milestone. Congratulation. I must admit I thought you had a water maker aboard. Hope that is in the plan. BTW, electrician's side cutters are better at zip ties than scissors. Also, never buy cheap zip ties. Be sure that they say on the packet UV inhibited, outdoor installations etc. You usually have to buy them from a proper electrical supply shop not just the local ironmonger.

Pro tip never use cable ties for nets or other long term out door load bearing things if you have to for some odd reason use at least 2 on each end ,one being slightly looser than the other. it is better to use 550 or small spectra to tie things up and also for hard things like the caribener to the mast if soft shackels are out of the budget just use a loop doubled through the mast hard point then clip the caribener to that so it makes a shock absorber. also for every hose possible and every seacock hose use 2 hose clamps (jubalees) and if at all possible put them 180 degrees out and reversed from each other for max durability that way one clamp failure does not make a crisis at the worst possible time.

The fastener on your furling drum is a Torx, not an allen. I know, sometimes you have to use what you have on hand.

Soooo much Oat milk. That's crazily expensive. I'm pretty sure I saw a nutribullet on your boat. You should make it yourself. Just oats, water, blended in your bullet and a muslin cloth. Nothing is wasted as you can use the oats after.

Luckily the oat miles were only 0.80c each! We do this occasionally but it’s not something you want to be doing all the time on a crossing.

Storing potatoes and onions together isn't the best idea. Onions produce a high level of ethylene gas, which will cause potatoes to ripen - and go bad - before you're ready to use them. However, those spuds aren't completely innocent, either; potatoes' high moisture content can cause onions to liquefy and leak.
