Great information on you series on Catamaran's, I plan on purchasing on in the next year and the anxiety of going from a monohull to a mutlihull has been lessened by watching your vids. Thank you Sir and keep up the on boat sailing adventures!

    Ok , I just binge watched all of 6 hours of ‘catamaran sailing’ with Capt Igor , and as Igor used to take care of ‘our’ boat (before we bought it from the active cruises company) I now know where all the little smart things come from ! Dinghy fenders , carabiner hooks , down haul lines , added blocks etc . Igor added them and they make life so much easier !
    I just need to learn how to sail because even after 2 years (from Croatia to panama) I dislike how slow the boat is ? But it’s probably sail trim as Igor says the L42 is / should be just as fast as the L46 !
    Anyway , Igor practices what he preaches and I love his down to earth approach incl the spaghetti and what typically goes wrong
    Blue Pearl Too prev ‘Mala Kate’
    Ps were taking good care of her just like you did 😊

    Remember that the KEY for catamaran cruising and making effective passages is V>M>G. Velocity made good (not necessarily only to windward) and includes tacking both upwind and downwind... Most cats have a preferred angle related to wind angle, so always look to your instruments for best VMG to your destination, and tack according to best VMG.

      Exactly 👍 When racing Lagoons I always get the best results sailing sharp upwind and butterfly downwind.

Which is a must but the last 15times over this bar the boat was on autopilot and wonderful conditions all because of planning. Astoria is great and illwaco is a nice little town with a gas dock and England marine . It is a tight entrance so stay within the bouys and follow the chart.

    Good video. Look up how to properly attach the chain to the anchor. You want it attached with high strength zip ties at the end where you have the chain now and chain it to the other eyelet closes to the plow. That way if the anchor gets jammed when trying to retrieve it, it will break the zip ties and lift straight up on the plow

  • @ColGadarby
    @ColGadarby Год назад +4

    Most people don't let anywhere near enough chain out - even experienced skippers. If you can free dive or snorkel it's worth taking a look and seeing how the chain ended up...

    • @mvakleko
      @mvakleko 2 года назад +2

      Yes very smart to catch that wind off the main with the head sail 👏 my question on that set up why not the genoa vs the jib. Was the wind too strong? It didn’t look that bad. Then he switched to wing on wing with both jib and genoa which is probably better to deal with changing wind and don’t put too much strain on the main preventer. That thing could also snap in a huge gust and lots of force there.

    with the 3-5 times depth rule you should include the distance form water to the attachment points of the anchor bridle for the depth.
    so: 2 meters of water would give 6 - 10meters of chain (theoreticaly)
    but with an attachment point of the bridle say 1m above water you will need 3x(2+1) = 9m --- 5x(2+1)=15m of chain out.

    • @IgorStropnik
      @IgorStropnik  Год назад

      It is about chain laying on ground near anchor which depends from wind strength. Also how well anchor is holding. With bad hold put much more chain as friction on ground will help. Practice and observe anchor with mask.

    We don’t say a boat has “right of way”, the “stand on” boat should keep straight and keep speed. 😁 loving the videos. Have been to Croatia a couple of times - wonderful sailing.

    We just did this route (July) and watched this episode in preparation. Unfortunately as we rounded the bend and were just 10nm from the anchorage we lost our steering gear and drifted for a day before being found by Yemeni fishermen who towed us 50nm back to socotra. I remember those waves and wind speeds well! Our boat is still anchored next to the wreck, awaiting to be fixed!

      Cruising cats and tris are all plenty stable. Tris have little more side movement than cats.
