    Sheltered waters only for Cats. Years ago I crewed for a coupla years on a 41 double-ended steel ketch that displaced around 21 tons. When was the last time anybody saw one of those things?This guy had a 19 foot beam and drew about 6 feet. BUT it could go anywhere and in fact had been around the horn in both directions. I saw what was estimated by the captain about 15 meter waves in it in the North Sea. He did not care what time of year it was either. This boat had an inside steering position that was domed with half a glass sphere. It musta been at least an inch thick! This boat had tiny ports many which were below the waterline on the weather side. They opened outward of course and would slam shut if they got hit by water from the front. all of these ports were only about 20cm diameter. It did have a large hatch though in the forcastle. Musta weighed at least 25kg. What a beast this boat was. however it carried a LOTTA sail with two jibs and of course a huge main & mizzen. He even had a storm jib up during a hurricane did not even bother to make any attempt around it even though it was reading about 940mb. This was in the days of sextants too, sir. this boat had more room below deck than that 50 foot cat. All bunks were gimbled and there was NO V birth.. Ironically it only had a 40hp diesel that pushed it only about 4 knots and the captain outright hated to use it at all. He generally only did that when approaching a dock because if this thing hit it that dock was probably gonna be toast! He preferred to anchor out as mooring was also difficult due to any way it may have been carrying especially during a following sea or wind. yeah it carried about 100 meters of really heavy chain. As stated what a beast! the boat was built in NZ in the 30's. Interesting, huh? Oh one other thing.. wooden masts very heavily stayed. The masts actually looked like they were tared!

    Interesting that you were sailing with only the genoa- I thought that was not aligned with the Lagoon sail operating procedures? I have recently spent 5 days on a Lagoon 51 and my thoughts were fairly negative. The noise from the engines in the rear cabins was so loud I felt it was a health hazard. Imagine spending €2,000,000 and needing ear defenders to sleep? Also, the access (particularly down) to/from the flybridge was hazardous because of the lack of handholds. I also think that stainless rails are needed on the coach roof near the steps so there are always hand holds for both hands and the protection from falling is somewhat higher than shin level. My suggestion to Lagoon would be to install a dumb waiter to make transporting drinks/food from the rear cockpit up to the flybridge.

    • @IgorStropnik

    Lovely video Igor, very enjoyable plus your insights. I’m very surprised at the shockingly bad sailplan and bad sail handling setup, not helped at all by going with a classic mainsail Mast instead of in Mast Furling, which would have removed the roof problem amongst other issues at a stroke? Best Wishes Bob in Wales who really likes the potential of Catamarans but unfortunately Catamarans really hate me due to the bucking bronco Motion you get when the two hulls connect with a wave at different times- that really does my head in, and has almost thrown me overboard. So for me, no option but to stick with Monohulls, which is ok.👍🌟🌟🌟🙂⛵️❤️

    • @brownnoise357

      @@IgorStropnik I’m a convert to in Mast furling Igor primarily due to the ease of handling due to my physical disabilities which rule out the Classic mast and Stackpack mainsails. But a. Very important benefit of in mast furling with an aluminium mast is for preventing excessive damage to expensive Sailcloth taking place from UV light exposure, which doesn’t just happen in the Tropics these days, due to the damage Solar Emissions have done to the Ozone Layer. By the way, I agree 100% with B&G having the inexcusable failure to address the auto pilot taking unauthorised breaks by them dropping out with no warning. Raymarine Was suffering from exactly the same problem, but I took Raymarine Customer Support to task for it, and warned that I may not be able to have Raymarine installed on my next Sailboat if the problem wasn’t fixed . So fingers crossed, that problem is over, but a new problem is the top spec displays appear to be very sluggish and laggy, which points to very poor coding and optimisation imho. So right now, the new Garmin gear looks like being the best option ? Raymarine may be having a problem with substandard or faulty graphics chips , as Ire ember simething similar happening with top of the line Nvidia graphics chips, that were seriously flawed, Nvidia knew, but still supplied them to graphics Card manufacturers. I was a Custom Computer Builder at the time, and luckily had a policy of only building with recent generation gear, that had been in the market for at least six months, so all the bug fixes and driver updates, were available, so dodged a bullet, but huge numbers of other makers customers and games developers, were ripping their hair out trying to fix problems that they didn’t know were arising from faulty hardware. At the same time, there were serious faults with AMD processors, and Microsoft had to do an update that declocked them as running at design speed had the CPU outputting garbage - that resulted in AND complying with Microsoft Certification standards, resulting in AMD being pretty good today - perhaps as well, mainly forcing AMD notherboard chipset compliance, as prior, I just couldn’t trust them enough to even offer them to customers.🤣🤣🤣 Best wishes for Fair Winds and Safe Travels. Bob in Wales.🤔🌟🌟🌟👍❤️

      @@IgorStropnik In addition to my Sailboat network being hacked by the wrecking Gang working New York Harbour, the iPad and Android Tablets were hacked as well, so like the GPS Chart plotter the heading was all over the place, and when I rebooted everything all my Charts were deleted as well. So I’m working on a Network backup image for a couple of options with Raymarine. For a Basic Recovery, to get out of Dodge to somewhere safe fast, plus a full restoration umage to install when safe. New Jersey State Police were hand in glove with the Wrecking Gang, with all the equipment to do it installed in their Helicopter.,NJ Local Police were brilliant, when it all sank in with them, I was provided with an armed Policewoman Bodyguard, believe it or not. It looks like I was the first person to survive an attack by that Wrecking Gang, thanks to me having a long keel shallow draft boat,tough enough to get me through it alive,before the boat sank and was a total loss off New Jersey- brilliant beach lifeguards got me off it, and into an ambulance to the local hospital. I met a lot of wonderful people in New Jersey tbh. Best wishes. Bob. 👍🙂⛵️❤️

      @@laurence9695 I think construction standards have improved a lot tbh, but I would seriously advise trying catamarans before buying one tbh, because much as I’ve liked the potential with Catamarans, they positively hate me, as the Bucking Bronco type motion resulting from the hulls connecting with a wave at different times, I found impossible to cope with, and the four to five feet vertical faced waves that are common in the Irish Sea, almost had me catapulted over the side of the boat of a Prout Catamarans I was interested in buying, back in the 1980’s. Owning one seemed very attractive after reading Rosie Swales book (she lived up the road here at the time). Back then I was young and Superfit, but that Motion really did my head in. So No option but to stick with Monohulls for me. I may well be in the minority of people badly affected though. As Frik and Pietru seem to manage fine with that motion when it visibly hits on their Leopard 45 and their Sailing Sisu channel on RUclips? Fingers crossed, you’ll nor be affected. Best wishes. I really like the flybridge on cats but its not a must have for me. I was looking maybe for something like the lagoon 500 but it also doesn’t have to be a lagoon. Igor - wont the mast moved forward make it bear away more in a gust and pitch that pointy hull downwards too? also shouldn't the fly bridge come forward up to the mast to close up the horrible hole under the boom to improve the sail's efficiency?

    • @IgorStropnik
      @IgorStropnik  6 месяцев назад +1

      With flybridge you want classic genova ( no self tacking) and mast forward with long boom to keep centre of effort low. It’s not racing boat. It just works better like that from my experience. Hulls have plenty volume so no problem pitching. It’s vacation boat so comfort first.

    Lagoon, oh no! Poor workmanship, not a blue water vessel. Seems decks are just glued on, not even fibreglassed. Same for bulkheads. Great for charter, as they can last 3 seasons, then start falling apart for the owners to take over. So many awful reviews. A shame for Beneteau nuilding them. 😢
