- Since sailing from the UK, down the coast of France, Spain and Portugal, to the Canary Islands, Cape Verde Islands and to the Caribbean, being fuelled by pretty much our sails alone, it is no wonder we get this comment a fair amount. And that is, if we bought new sails for our boat before leaving.

About Us
We are Becka and Zach, a couple who, in 2020, dreamt of sailing off into the big blue. Trouble is- we were in a pandemic, had a university degree to finish, on a student budget, only had ever sailed dingies, oh and didn’t have a boat. The dream seemed not only unrealistic but pretty insane.
However, we worked hard, finished our degrees, worked as many hours as physically possible, saved with all our might, got experience and in March 2022 bought our very own sailboat, Teulu. Having little sailing experience and being a young couple, we have encountered a tonne of hurdles and made plenty of mistakes! but for every downfall, there has always been a reason to dust ourselves off and carry on.

Could you guts do a video on some of the logistics that need to be considered... I do wonder how sailing channels get around things like paying income taxes, customs, medical supplies( things like contraception and even hay-fever tablets aren't available everywhere) and how you plan your next routes... would be a really interesting sit down video 😊
Kemp sails appear to have done a great job. Better to refurb than buy new.
They sure did! We are all about trying to reuse instead of buying new 😊
Hi Becka and Zach. Another great episode. Like the view of your hitchhikers. They'll need scraping off before you go much farther. Great to see that Kemp Sails give such good after-sales service to their products, despite the fact you weren't the original buyers. Had to laugh at Zach having problem fitting new sacrificial anode, because he was trying to screw it together, upside-down. Been there; done that. It always takes a few minutes to figure out, "Wot am I doing wrong?", before the proverbial Penny drops. Glad you were able to find a replacement Pawl, for the winch. I trust you replaced them as a pair, given the new ones appeared to be a millimetre longer. Looking forward to next week's episode. Fair Winds. Russ. UK.

Why you don't oil all you wooden exterior parts with linseed oil.
It's cheap and effective.
In the very old days even whole boat hulls are covered with linseed oil.
Every paint or varnish job on a boat will fail sooner or later.
The varnish cracks and water creeps under the paint work and make the timber to fai 0:13 l.
The other good thing with linseed oil is it save you all this nasty paint stripping. Just give it a sand and recoat with linseed oil.

You are probably right about the pawls sticking. You should only put light oil on the pawls for this reason something like three-in-one oil. Clean off the grease and lightly oil.
The smashed pawl is the effect, not the cause. What will have happened is the pawls got stuck in because of the grease then one popped out as the winch was spinning that's what caused the damage. Obviously, once the pawl was damaged you had very little chance of the winch ratcheting properly. You also have far too much grease everywhere else.
P.S Should have read some of the other comments first. 😁
I’ve used oil this time around. Last year when I serviced the winch I made the mistake of using grease instead, this time around I used far far less. Hopefully it won’t break again. Thanks for the advice 😊

20:38 Putting a new zinc on a fouled shaft is NG. Shaft has to be bright as you are making an electrical connection not just a mechanical one.
I gave the shaft a bit of a scrub before putting on the zinc, I think that it has a good connection (it was touching shiny metal) as it looks like it’s getting attacked at the same rate as the other one. Thanks for the advice Mark 😊
Kemp sails way to treat customers.
When servicing a winch, never put grease on the pawls, because they might stick in the close position.. if one does that, all the load will be in the other one and might break… grease everywhere, but heavy oil only in the pawls…. Also, when installing that kind of anode before the strut bearing, try to install it as forward as possible, because at speed it will create a big air bubble that might private the bearing from water going through it, which is what lubricates it and keeps it cool.. that’s why barrel style anodes are used forward of the strut..
Thanks for the heads up. We put Lewmar Pawl oil on the springs but will start putting that on the pawls too!
That monohull at 17:08 with the sticker "I love Poland" is interesting. It has twin daggerboards...first time I have seen such a thing on a mono

Just thinking about conductive anode connections, you recon the prop shaft should get a scuff up with a purple pad b4 clamping an anode to it, pretty sure I would.
Kudos to you guys again and again … I am going prop up behind you …. Who cares what you are eating when you are experiencing an adventure of a life time …I backpacked Europe for 6 months not once but twice and basically lived on bread, cheese, cured meats and vino … it made it even better … the adventure was what is was all about and when I did get in a good meal it seemed even better …. Keep living your dreams

I live near quarries. That turqois colour blue everyone falls in love with in the Caribbean meant "poison" in the quarry. It took me a while not to get queasy shivers looking at it.
It must seem strange, seeing this is water sailors over here seek out!

When adding the sacrificial anode place it closer to a bearing, it may not corrode evenly and thus cause an imbalance when place mid-point.

I was always told to grease the gears and oli the paws as the grease will thicken and stop the paws working properly. That might be why it shattered.
Could well be. I made sure to oil them this time round 😊
A trick for the Zinc, put the bolts into one side with a drop of super glue so you don't drop them and then with a turn of your hex wrench the super glue will break and in you go

14:30 Pawls are lightly oiled, not greased.
Thanks Mark, wasn’t too clear in the vid but we use the special Lewmar oil on the Pawl springs and now on the Pawls too ☺️
Currently going through the older videos. The format and content is excellent. I was never impressed with new boats and the essential parts that would break. . Well done with all the maintenance you both undertake.

If you join the anode with one screw before going down loosely you should be able to get it over the shaft on the first breath and it will stay... Then do the other screw hand tight.... then come back with the Allen key ;-)

Create a data base of your spare parts and tools. One field of the data base should be where on the boat the part or tool is stored! In this way, you are managing your inventory and saving time. Another field of the data base is the quantity of the part that you keep onboard. When a part is removed from storage and used, the name of the part is entered into a spreadsheet that is created to order new parts to replace what you have just used. :¬) Webhead USA

They sure did 😊 I’ve had a look at them before, but underwater jobs that require me underwater for long periods of time aren’t too common 😅 Thanks for the suggestion!
Keep an eye on that anode, as if it doesn't have a good contact with the shaft, it will not sacrifice itself, and the worn one will be doing all the work. I may have cleaned shaft first with emery cloth or 3M pad. Happy Caribbean sailing though.

Hi you guys. Have been watching all your vids sonce the start. The gooseneck barnicles on your hulll are super terrible. Must skrape off asp. Spread like wildfire. Look at GGR and the effects on participants. Some had to withdraw from the race because of them. Super big problem in the canery island area and south of that. Something new like the orcars to make things more difficult. Good luck going on.

And, FWIW... One should never "grease" the pawls. Use the recommended oil only. As you noted, grease is too thick and "can" cause the pawls to "stick".
I made that mistake last year. This time around I’ve just used the oil. Thanks for the advice!

Hi guys, I service a lot of winches at the beginning of each season, and the biggest fault I find is way too much grease. They only require a light coating brushed on and only oil the pawls
I definitely made that mistake when I first did ours. I ended up taking a good amount off this one before putting it back together. Thanks for the advice Mark 😊
When you do them again, clean them with petrol and a paint brush. The petrol will dissolve the old grease and leave a dry finish, unlike diesel, which leaves an oily finish, which will break down the new grease. Apply a light even coat of grease with a brush to all parts except the pawls, which should be oiled. Your winches were not that bad, I had a client last year who must have used a whole tin of grease and wondered why they did not move freely. It took me two days to do 4 winches 😱
Your shaft zinc should be tapered on both ends. I’m guessing that the one you put on is all that they had. Could not hold my breath for half the time you were under the boat. And I’m in a chair not struggling for position in the water. Good for you mate.

My sailing mentor and good mate has a Colvic Countess ketch very similar to Teula on which I've done many a mile round the UK. Very comfortable and safe boat although he has a problem with leaks around the windows. Are yours double glazed?

Being an ex medic May I ask what kits you have onboard for emergencies mid oceans etc? SV Delos did an episode sometime back looking into getting prescriptions, anti biotic with advice cards from doctors for infections, food poisoning, UTIs etc, I think they put out lists and a book list on the episode. I’m sure you have prepped for all this. Did you try the white vinegar fruit and veg soak.

About a month ago we posted on our Patreon about this, we included a spreadsheet of everything we have onboard including dosage and what each medication can be taken for. I’ve just tried it with some fruit and veg we got today, fingers crossed 🤞

All I have ever sailed has been a sloop rig. Is it a pain in the butt to sail a ketch rig? I would not know when or how to use the mizzen or not. To me it's enough to maintain the main and the head sail while underway.
We love sailing ketch rigs, it can be more work at times. However, the difference sail combinations allow you to get the boat more balanced in a wider range of conditions. Also, I think ketches look amazing with all their sails up!

Two things... 1, I guarantee you there were people looking at you thinking damn those rich people, and 2, no matter how expensive your boat is, you'll always pull in somewhere that makes you feel poor. Its a life lesson and best not to even notice, not that you look like you're going to lose sleep over it.
The boat isn't a proxy for you, and you two are two of the richest people I know of.
