On this 7th leg of our Northwest Passage attempt we get intercepted by some awfully nice Canadian police officers. Yes, "Federal Arctic Unit" is just a fancier way of saying police up in the north. We also encounter a beluga & huge amounts of wildfire smoke as we sail around 800 nautical miles to Cambridge Bay...

PS. Canadian police are awfully nice!
And yes "Federal Arctic Unit" is just a fancier way of saying the Canadian police (RCMP) up north 😆
Great video as usual. I follow you with interest because I once stood on the shores of Beaufort Sea near the point you rounded before heading to Cambridge Bay. I was near the mouth of the Horton River were it erupted into the bay years ago. You can see it on a good topo.
Recently discovered your RUclips channel and have spent the last month watching all the films from sailing in Norway to your last crossing to Greenland. It's inspiring to follow you through the various challenges that arise along the way. Much can be solved through good planning, but it's how things are resolved along the way that shows how well prepared you have been for such a trip. I look forward to following you further with films on RUclips and updates on Instagram from Greenland. Safe sailing ahead
@@AlluringArcticIt's wild how that area is almost tropical, with ice beforehand and even more ice after the eastbound route past Cambridge Bay. I could see without you saying your concerns with climate change. It is our Earth changing , Carbon from within as well as the carbon man is creating BOTH doing a double whammy on the environment. However it is inevitable and the warming trend cannot be stopped. I love that area where the Dempster Highway meets the Arctic. Those sand beaches you enjoyed were some excellent scenes. Thanks for sharing this Juho/Sohvi. BTW are you guys still locked in ice right now in GLand ??
I wish I could spend New Years there with you guys , that would be Epic.
Are you running low on beer/booze yet ? 😂
Take Care my Friends.
@@havardforde Same here. The more we watch, the more we admire Juho and friends. 👏
Your intuition about the Mounties looking for something to do is bang on.
😂 So Canadian
Arctic Canada friendly 😂
"Hey guys, there's a GIRL on that boat!" - sound of outboards starting...
there's that, and it is legitimate training.
The RCMP must be seen to actually doing something by way of scrutinizing who enters Canadian territory. TRUMP demands it.
You can't blame the Coastal Police, it looked like a magnificent day to come and check you out.
We received the two aluminum prints we ordered, and They. Are. Awesome!! Highly recommend!!
Ha! The RMCP knew it was you guys and knew they'd get in the vid. This has been great following your trip. Thank you!
I love that you exude such a quiet confidence. While I'd worry about other vessels undertaking such a remote and treacherous journey, you calmly manage the challenge, always have a backup plan, and relate extraordinarily well to all us land lubbers. Thanks for sharing your incredible adventure!
It's nice to see that people are checking in on each others. I guess when the tanker heard that you're Finnish, he knew that 1. you *are* crazy, and 2. you'll be fine :) Have a safe trip!
Adriaticborg is not a tanker. It's a general cargovessel of the Dutch company Wagenborg. Tankers usually don't have cranes like this vessel has.

@@felixfeleus510 Thanks for the info, even if some people don’t. She is currently approaching the U.S. East coast.

Elder Northern Canadian = Thank you for sharing and making my day with each blog. = Your hands-on voyage is making history for all that watch!!
Tack!
Your videos in my opinion are the best sailing videos on the internet, thank you.
One of your best videos for drylanders to experience the sea and real life sailing. And as always, the calmness of your intelligence puts the cherry on top!
You make it look so easy but I think it is such a huge task doing what you do preparing the voyage and making the passage every single day with all the potential surprises ahead. Respect to you and your team.
You look so happy and proud of Lumi cruising along at 8 knots.
She was hauling the mail! 👍
That means going really fast
His smile at this moment jumped off the screen
Some of the shots taken in the smoke haze were like a Turner painting...amazing.
The absolute BEST content on RUclips… so raw, real and incredibly beautiful photography, plus there is always something to learn. Keep them coming, just amazing content.
Admittedly, knowing you’re already in Greenland takes a bit of that “suspense factor” out of it, but does NOT take away from the experience at all! 🤣👍🏼☮️
Wow fantastic sailing from the best YT sailing channel by far - none of the others even come close. Our sympathies to you for enduring the smoke not fog, and mixed feelings about the balmy weather with so much melting of tundra and lack of big ice floes for polar bears, seals, Inuits and belugas, but it must mean full bellies for the orcas. That smoke got really unreal and your headaches must have been quite terrible. So much new stuff at the Co-op grocery it must have been hard not to buy the whole store out! Keep it up with the greatest sailing experience vids on Earth! 🙀
Your videos are exceptional and captivating. I so much enjoy spending and hour on Sunday travelling with you brave adventurers.
Another amazing episode! Seeing and breathing that wild fire smoke, then hearing of record warm temperatures must have been a very profoundly ominous feeling in regard to the state of our planet. Then as days grow shorter with challenging ice conditions ahead just watching from home there is a tension building. But you are so calm and well reasoned I couldn’t imagine anyone I would rather be with on this journey. Thank you so much for sharing this extraordinary adventure.
Well put! 👍👍
Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada, U.S.A.
Coming into a new harbor at night... "the mainsail is stuck. That's a little unfortunate."
I *LOVE* Finnish Stoicism.
I could watch extended cuts of this. It's so amazing
Thank you for taking us along for the adventure! Best wishes for the new year!!
Thanks! Incredibly interesting! Great job putting the video together...Dave
Another awesome episode. Great to see the radio operator of the tanker checking in. Amazing adventure. Thanks for sharing.
Tanker reported bad ice conditions , worst in 50 Years. And You experienced climate change in Your first visit there.
Good Luck!
11C water is about 52F, which is about what the water temp is off Northern California most of the year. Crazy that the water is so warm in the arctic that time of year.
It's happened so many times before man was even on this planet.
@ws102 - 11C struck me as super crazy hot for that latitude! I am wondering if the relatively shallow waters up there capture the sun's heat and have no cold deep waters to offset it. Very disturbing.
@@MichaelLyons-h4i has it? Do you have arctic sea surface temperature data from prehistoric times?
11 degrees in the shallows where the sun warms the ground.
@@MichaelLyons-h4ihuh? How would you know this?
The word epic is used so liberally these days that it has lost a lot of its intensity in meaning. This adventure you have all embarked on is truly deserving of the historical depth of the meaning of of the word, epic. From the initial preparations to set your beloved boat up to best handle the harsh conditions, ensuring back up systems and equipment, to the initial adventures up and down the western coast of Canada and Alaska. It's one heck of a beautiful journey!! It's such a privilege to join you through your blessed gift of capturing through video and sharing these stunning endeavours!! 😍
Thank you so much!! Happy New Years to both of you and the beautiful new fur baby you both have adopted. 😘💕
Very enjoyable episode and the folks from RCMP appeared to be professional with some good vibes. The smoke was surreal .
Happy New Year to you and the crew and thanks for all the wonderful footage you provide. -
You are so fantastic, I love watching you tackling the seas. Good Luck and take care.
I received my art today, Downwind in Victoria Strait. Beautiful quality and it’s waiting in my office as the first job to do when I return from Christmas break. Really happy with it. Thanks.
So impressive! Thank you so much for publishing your epic odyssey!
This is so amazing! Thanks again for allowing us to come along on your journey. Hopefully, the natural beauty and ice are still there for my own children to enjoy years from now. Of course, by then, it will be 80F, 7 months out of the year and half the wildlife will just be stories and bones in a museum.
A safe pilot, a tired pilot, and definitely the cutest pilot....
Fantastic. Thank you for this reporting. Plus it is joyful and happy.
Danke!
I'm thoroughly enjoying each & every video of this real-life adventure.
Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada, U.S.A.
Very enjoyable story video. Fair winds with smooth clear seas
Thanks!
Like what you're doing AND had my Sohvi(?) fix, too. But seriously, this is so much better than the usual sailboat adventure piece....you are so well suited to this mission and it's awesome to see our north coast through this lens!
"we enjoy this (warm weather in a polar region in December) with mixed feelings"..... THIS speaks volumes. Carry on, I for one am always happy with the next installment from you guys (and gal!).
FYI, this was August weather; the videos are posted with a delay. Still troubling.
It clearly said on the screen 27/August🙄 😒
Sun shine & No Snow 😅
@@LondonCarnaval My bad, I get caught up in the story and then after the video I feel like it happened yesterday, or last week at the latest. Still though, far too warm for that area even in late August.
I smile once per minute during your videos. Thank you 😊
That's one of the great things about this channel he's always smiling. 👍
Bedankt
This passage is captivating. Can't wait to see the next one.
Another great film, better than just about everything on the telly.
Epic passage, half way to your destination. The Canadian wildfires have bothered us in Maine for nearly 2 years now. Happy New Year to all and enjoy the passage.
Great show- probably one of the best- really enjoyed the sailing segments-- Thanks😀
Fab content as always. Best sailing channel out there by a nautical mile. Ordered a print. If there was a smaller size I might find a place for one on my boat. Happy new year to the crew.
Really enjoy watching your journey and documentary! Thanks
this is good cinema so hope you recovered quickly from the trip passed the fires and happy to see you aboard one of the finest working cutters iv ever seen and sure wishing youu a safe journey thru the poor viz ahead
I now own one of you "Downwind" prints and it is stunning. Best to you and your crew.
I was never a cold weather sailor, tropics always for me. It is good to see the other side.
Great video not only because of the amazing filming of arctic sailing, groovy life on board and impressing landscapes, but also showing the radical consequences of what most def looks like a significant climate change. The weapon training was entertaining a lot. Cannot wait to see the next episode. Wishing you all the best for 2025!
It's really great to follow your journey, the videos are well made and interesting. Stay safe!
Great and diverse content; the addition of extra crew certainly adds a particular social dynamic. That said, I like your "adventure" focus! There were so many fantastic shots, sailing through the smoke, capturing a unique quality, and I sensed the joy of the 8kt stretch. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for another great portion of your passage. The image of Lumi traveling with the amber light bouncing from the smoke over the water was both eerie and beautiful.
Loved the sound of the wind when you docked at the end.
Jeez, the temperatures! That's crazy. It must be with very mixed emotions that you're experiencing this first hand. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this!
Water at 11 Celsius indeed gives mixed feelings.
Well, this is a really good one! Did see a lot of different things happening. When I was in Wisconsin many years ago, I could smell the fires which were coming from Minnesota. It was a haze around Milwaukee.
Of course, more recently, the smoke from the Canadian fire have been much more prevalent across the Midwest and Northeast United States
I'm very fortunate to be able to tune in to your videos. Thanks so much for sharing your adventure.
I'm sorry to say it, but I have a mad crush on Sohvi. So chill, so beautiful!
Another amazing video, thank you!
So fun watching you guys make your way to Greenland! Looking forward to the next video!
Nice. A stranger on the VHF and suddenly Sovie becomes very talkative! 😂
More English practice :)
My earliest childhood friendship was with a girl born on Baffin Island. Her parents worked there. Your video today brought back that memory. I enjoy your videos.
As a Canadian who grew up in a small town, the "Canadian small talk" caption was hilarious!
thank you so much as always! amazing footage but also so important to rise awareness of the changes happening with the planet which affect even the most remote places.
Wow, another exciting episode, that smoke was unreal!!
Thanks for sharing your Finnish humor with us all! 😂
Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I am from Canada but will probably never see the places in Canada where you are visiting as Canada is such a big place and Cambridge Bay is so far away from me at around 3k miles as the crow flies. You guys are lucky to have such an experience. Safe travels.
Always relieved to see you safe and sound. Safe sailing further! At least you won't run out of 🧊 for your drinks.
How lucky you all are to have made such a fantastic voyage!
Nice adventure, enjoying your journey!
Had a rigging thought to pass along to you on your mainsheet block on the boom - I saw the sheet twisting because the block on the boom is twisting. You should be able to lock the orientation of the block, usually by engaging a set screw to prevent the post the the shackle attaches to from rotating. This will reduce chafe and make sure you can trim and ease when you need to.
Thanks again for the great vids, I know you made it through but looking forward to seeing more. Happy New Year!🎉
Sailing through fire smoke is so surreal. I experienced while sailing through the Java sea many years ago. There were extensive fires on Kalimantan to the East. We were also passing through the doldrums, so our progress was very slow.
Have been finding your Canadian portion of the voyage most interesting. Best wishes to all.
Alltid lika inspirerande att titta på erat äventyr !! Helt auto off order 👍. Lycka till !!
I am speechless WHAT A COOL ADVANTURE !!!
Thank you for inviting us along on this part of your journey. Excellent!!
Great to see this, followed various yachts through the NWP about 8 years ago but haven't in recent years. 11C is warm for up there. We had such a cloudy summer here in Scotland that I don't think the sea ever got that warm here.
After watching the video again Juho I realized that you were playing Tag chasing Sohvi on the beach, and she obviously seems very shy being directly on camera, but with you playing with her she was having fun so that’s why her yelling like that was so cute.
Happy New Year - I am enjoying the Sunday rendez-vous with your adventures
I lived in Cambridge bay for most of my life! Enjoy!:)
Thank you for sharing your adventure with the rest of us.
Suho, might be the best video, this series. Really good. Thanks
Another great episode!
Happy 2025 🥳
thanks! Happy New Year!
When I sailed to New Zealand from Vanuatu on my buddies KP44, I slept like a baby in the V berth, pounding along didn't bother me at all. Listening to water pass by the hull knowing I only had about 3/4 of an inch of fiberglass between me and the ocean was interesting to think about. Watching your video is so familiar with all the things we had on board, good job, I look forward to the next video.
I wonder if the bobbing of their vessel is because of a different layout or design. They said in a previous episode that they have a flat bottom boat which they like because they can beach it.
Anyway, it’s really great experience you had.😊
That's a tanker from Dutch shipping line Wagenborg that specializes in using the Northwest Passage to avoid the Panama Canal
Wonderful series. Wish you Safe travels.
This is real adventure - your channel is awesome!
That smoke looked horrible! I live in south central New York State and in June of 2023 we had that smoke down this way. I didn't feel any real negative effects, but some people in the area did. I am waiting for your next episode so that I can see the bad ice ahead of you.
Thanks
wauh, that shot with the golden light was divine! You are so lucky!
I suggest practicing the Stan Rogers song “Northwest Passage” for the next time the Mounties show up. By Canadian law, they are required to sing it with you.
@johnsrabe Yes but a prerequisite for joining the Mounties isn't being able to sing! They flout the law like that!
Otoh, if they play any Nickelback, do NOT sing along; it's a trick. Responses may range from derisive scorn to fisticuffs.
I thought it was "Barrett's Privateers."
@@willianparrish6284 That’s for when they get to a Halifax pier.
@@johnsrabe I sure wish I was in Sherbrooke, now.
I personally prefer the tropics but this channel is becoming my favorite. Thanks guys. 😊
Beautiful as always, tack
Amazing content. I will try to share these videos with more people to help get the views up.
These videos are a gift to future generations.
This way they can see what Nature was like in the climate transition period of the 20th and 21th Century...
All the signs of the big change are there for all to see... and for those in the future to reflect back on.
What about acting now and reducing your co2 emission before it gets too late?
Awesome video as always! Love exploring my homeland with you guys, I hope I can get that north in my liftetime! Relieved to see the RCMP doing good work up there an being nice, semi professional 🤣🤘👌🇨🇦🇫🇮
Fantastic video as always!👍
Got to love it when a fix is that easy ! Doesn’t happen often but so nice when it does 👌😊
Such interesting content, I love these remote wild places, and especially the places that get really cold in winter.
Loving the content and thank you for the effort. I hate politics however I'm a school teacher who encourages students to descibe it as 'global warming' not 'climate change'. Climate change was coined by the oil industry because it sounds less threatening.
Thanks again.
