"The more the wind comes behind the more the sails are away from the boat" "The more the winds come from the front the sails are close to the boat" Do you realize in those simple layman terms, you just made my sailing life a WHOLE lot easier!
I learned in 20 minutes what I couldn’t learn in 2 years fallowing over 30 sailing channels. You nailed it. Everyone else show us how to repair a broken head, but nobody tells how to actually “sail” a sailboat. Thank you so much. 👍👍👍
What an amazing and marvelous tool the internet is, to pass information, see and learn almost anything at the tip of your fingers. I’m at the dinghy stage, so now I’d pausing your lessons over and over and taking notes. Never too old to learn or do anything. Thanks Dutch Seaman! Fair winds!
Thank you Javier, I added a few addings in the description of the video. Take those with you too. A good book is The Complete Yaghtmaster by Tom Cuncliffe. It's just a little hard to understand sometimes with all the terms. But it's a good bundle of all answers. I only disagree about the normal sail vs. roll furl mainsail :). All the best, Huub
Yes, me too. Pausing over & over. Partly it's his accent, but 2 or 3 viewings I'll get used to it. Plus he talks so fast. Should talk slow & pause after each statement, so the meaning sinks in. It's great. Big thanks to the video teacher!
Thank you so much Franz Explorer! It just drove me insane how difficult things were explained when I tried to learn it, as if they were speaking abracadabra to me (and I graduated university).
I got more out of this video than the entire Annapolis Book of Seamanship. Kudos. Wet need more like this: no long introduction, no crappy music, short and concise. WTG! 👏👏👏👏
No matter how many books we have read, something's don't sink in when you are trying to remember the terminology as well as the procedures. Your video explains it in simple terms! Thank you so much for making this and sharing it with everybody 👌🏼👍🏼
THIS IS WHAT I NEEDED. Just bought a 27' Catalina, and have been watching videos, reading, etc, but this was such a complete overview that it fit it all together. WELL DONE AND MANY THANKS!
Nautical terms existed well before sailing was a pleasure activity, and they exist so that people know specifically what you mean when it comes time to refit the boat, or change rigging mid-sail. They also exist so that instead of spending an entire sentence to describe a manoeuvre, or a component, you just use a word. It's unambiguous and fast.
Left/Port/Red - all the short words go together (Right/Starboard/Green, long words). This is the only thing I knew about sailing before watching this. Thanks for the education.
Funny to see the commenters who come across as criticizers and experts...Most of us the people coming to this video are new to sailing or want a refresher...the criticizers can keep it to the regatta...this was perfect for the new sailor or want to be new sailor...short and sweet and visual...Thank you.
Thank you Todd. Yes, That's just RUclips.. If people only knew how much work videos like this cost to put together :). On average I'm getting over 90% great comments, so that's a rate I'm very happy with hahaha.
Very nice and practical. But for offshore sailing, the sailing school is still really recommended... Knowing and understanding to act or react at the best time. In addition to sailing navigation, we also learn radio, administration, maritime law, mechanics, weather, dead reckoning and instruments navigation, etc... We avoid a lot of beginner's mistakes that spoil the pleasure of sailing and can be expensive (and dangerous), it's cool :) It's your life, that of your passengers and it's your boat...
Amazing. Haven’t sailed in over 10 years and this helped refresh my knowledge immensely. It directly covers all the small intuitive things you pick up when sailing.
Great job! The only thing I would say is when leaving the slip, put the bow line on the bow vs tieing it to the lifeline because IF (when) it comes untied it will go straight into the prop. One way to avoid that is to make sure it is always a couple of feet short of reaching the prop but hey, it's better to place it under the lifeline and on the foredeck (quick coil of course :-)
My pleasure. The best thing about boating is the people who are always willing and very happy to help in any way. Boaters are the best people on earth (except the pirates of course :-)
Awesome - clear concise documentation of basic sailing techniques and terminology! Well worth watching 10 times for people like me with no or close to no knowledge of sailing. Thanks very much. Keep them coming?
Thank you for posting this video. I'd like to see more sailing for beginners. I'm 45 years old, and I want to buy a boat and sail away. You are inspiring to me. You saw what you wanted and you went for it. My only problem is the I live in the mountains of northeast Georgia. I have to learn to sail in a lake. Once I get certified, I'm buying my forever boat and hitting the 7 seas. Thank you again. I look forward to seeing your new videos.
Very helpful. Easily laid out step by step. It is true that seamen developed those terms over hundreds of years but creating a reference character in teaching is widely used. There was no reason to criticize the technique. Thanks again skipper, great class.
Love the video and humer great job! Wanted to tell everyone the way my navy grandpappy taught me to remember left/port/red and right/starboard/green. Always match up the short words and long words! Super easy!
Great video, thank you! Some things my Dad taught me over the years, that stuck with me...Port = Left (Both have 4 letters)buoy position (red/green) while sailing? remember "Red Right Returning" back to the dockage.Cheers!
Kaptain Kid Thanks, you dug into it a little deeper than I was willing to do but you are right facing the front of the boat the left side of the boat is port and you’re right if I look at the Stern the right-hand side of the boat is port I was just using that as a reference thanks for correcting me
I found the best way to remember port or starboard was Port had the same amount of letters as left I was told this by a good friend Derek who was sailing from a young boy and took me on my first sailing holiday in grease greatly missed
Hoi Huub. Very good video. The reason why a rope turns into a line while onboard ( I am actually talking about all the specific vocabulary used on a boat) is that you have to make sure that any (new) crew member from anywhere uses the same word for every different thing on the boat. Being dutch this is not a big problem because this language is not spoken in so many regions. But take Spanish for instance. There are dozens of different words for rope depending if you come from Spain, Chile, Mexico or wherever . In other words, on board there should be no room for doubts or misundertandings . In the very beginng I also had the idea that sailing people were kind of snobish but after a while I understood that using a common vocabulary is a must. Vriendelijke groeten uit Montevideo, Uruguay
I chuckle when I read comments about where the terminology came from. I'm certain the OP knows this...he did post an outstanding video on the basics of sailing in 25 minutes, after all. Well done!
I've never been on a sailboat in my life (just curious and bored) but I'm totally overwhelmed and need some of that Rum you mentioned. Whew. sailing sounds exhausting.
Haha hey Matt, Rhum is always good :). I can image if you’ve never been on a boat it’s a lot to digest, but if you want to, it’s pretty easy to start doing it! All the best! Huub
Actually sailing's very relaxing unless you're racing. Look for a local sailing club if you'd like to try. The American Sailing Association is associated with good schools and clubs if you're in the U.S. There are schools and clubs world over.
Easiest way to remember port/left/red and starboard/right/green is the fewer letters are left and the larger words with more letters right just as left has fewer letters and right has more letters.

I literally watched hundreds of sailing vids both for pleasure and instructional reasons. I have to say, even though some of them were good, this one is exceptional!!! I feel confident that if someone watched this 5 to 10 times, they would have most if not all of the terminology down PAT. (who is this PAT person anyway...Ü) BRAVO! WELL DONE! PEACE OUT! Ps, what kind of drone did you lose? All the viewers of this vid should chip in and buy you a new one! Ü
Wish I had seen this video years ago. I have just retired after almost 20 years as a RYA instructor. I could have just popped this film on my laptop for the students to watch whilst I took to the deck- hammock and drank rum!! Excellent instructional video - many thanks.
Hahaha, that's so funny! Thank you Peter! It would've been a good video to give students an overview idea of the basics before taking them out sailing and into more details maybe... I appreciate you comment a lot as an RYA instructor! I'm thinking about doing my RYA one day too as it seems a good thing to have if you want to work on a boat (if I need money again :) ) All the best! Huub
I recently co-own a 42 sailboat with my fd, I have no idea and no confident to sail, after watching this video and I finally know how the ropes work. Thanks so much
when the wind comes from the back you can sail too most effective in this case is a tecnique called butterfy where the sail in the front is on one side and the rear main sail on the other
I bought a 30' Dufour Arpege about a month ago and am about to take her out with a friend for the first time. Thanks for the crash course, very informative.
Huub, this is a brilliant video, really well made and edited! We can appreciate how many hours work it must have taken you to put this together. [not to mention the loss of your drone...] The saying, 'give, and you will receive' springs to mind: you will reap the rewards of this video for years to come (and rightly so!) Fair winds! Chris & Rossella 👍
Hey Chris and Rossella, thanks so much for your comment! Yeah it was quite a shot list. I made it out of frustration that it took others so long to teach me something that really isn’t so hard to at least learn the basics. Fair winds and all the best! Huub
I know you posted this a while ago but thank you. I am teaching my wife and oldest children and your video is a HUGE help. We look forward to watching your other videos.. Keep creating beauty in your journey...
Such a perfect basic introduction. I was going to create something similar once I learn how to sail my larger boat because I couldn't find a video like this. Thanks for going back and forth from technical terms to, you know "left" side of the boat. :) Looking forward to exploring your channel to see if you have more great content.
Thanks! this was the best instructional video I've ever come across,, Buying my first boat, and nervous about it, will keep re-watching,, so much great information in 20 minutes. Cheers, and good winds
Thank you! Just motor to a place without boats and with moderate wind and you’ll be fine trying everything out. There are always people in the sailing community who like to join for a day for free and can show you a lot. You’ll meet people in the anchorage or in the marina once you have the boat. All the best!
Well done, I was put off a few years ago by someone making it out to be a big deal. I understand you have to be careful but just getting on and giving good simple explanations is the way. 👍
BRAVO!!! I just decided on pursuing my dream to own a sail boat and sail...! Thanks for this easiest tutorial ever! In less than 10 years, I'll own a boat!
@@HuubVlogs were you from and where have you sailed? I'm beginning and newish and only thing I wanted to do for the rest of my life before I die on what already short life we all have on this earth! 🌬️💨⛵🤙
Top video. I have read a number of replies to your video and I am sure they are all correct in saying you haven’t explained everything but I think you have done an excellent job in a reasonably short 20 minute video. Much longer and, in my humble opinion, it would be too much to absorb.Think I will be viewing this video a number of times and then looking for another explaining all the areas others have pointed out. Very informative and great job in drawing out replies from some very experienced sailors. I believe your video and all of the comments from others has made this an excellent introduction and starting place for the beginner. Thank you Dutch for taking the time.
Hi Andrew, thank you very much! Yes indeed, I made this to give people a base. People always tried to explain sailing to me like it's magic and I never got it. After a year of living on different boats and reading many books, I finally got the basics. And they are not that hard to learn. And luckily this boat owner was very willing to cooperate on it so it didn't cost me a lot of money to make it... All the best! Huub
I just found your channel from the interview with Adventureman. I really like your content and that you are yourself without acting. Keep it going man!! Thanks!
Good summary of the basics. Dank u wel! For someone who would like to try sailing, look for a local sailing club. You can sail (including cruising boats, racing boats, dinghys, etc.) with a club for a tiny fraction of the cost of owning a boat. In the U.S. many good clubs and sailing schools are certified by the American Sailing Association or US Sailing (United States Sailing Association). The ASA class textbooks like Sailing Made Easy are very clear and concise. If you'd like to learn the basics I recommend it along with its associated class, ASA 101 Basic Keelboat Sailing. I'm sure other countries have similar clubs, especially in Europe. Sailing is great fun! If you get seasick try ginger root pills with lots of water or food. Sailing more usually makes the seasickess go away as your body gets accustomed to the motions.
Excellent!!! For anyone starting out this is the video to watch and then keep building and experiencing as much as possible. You will make some mistakes over the years but hopefully they will be minor and not really hurt you or your pocketbook too much.Thanks...Al
Best way I found to remember what side of the boat was what, is a saying that was taught a long time ago. "When we left Port, starboard was on the right. Port left, starboard right.
At first I thought from your accent you were french, but the more I watched and listened and noticed you not sticking your head up your arse but talking the talk and REALLY were walking the walk. And then discovered you were from Zeeland (sort-of) . I REALLY hope you earn from these most instructive videos. I have been waiting so so many years for such useful information that most "boaties" WILL NOT SHARE because they're snobs.
This is a great video! If you are still making them, it would interesting to get a bit more of a demonstration about the use of the whisker pole and as well the additional line you affix to the anchor line to take pressure off the Windlass.
Port and Starboard are called because whoever invented these names as a usual route, had land on left site and stars to guid on right side. Its not just out of the blue. Portboard left = land board, star board right = stars and open ocean. Mainly came norm from Portuguese and English sailors.
Huub, I have been reviewing your lesson to make sure I’ve got it. Your suggestion about “ you might as well continue to sail around the world,” sounds good! Lol R/ Jim
LOVE this. Now can you do one using a sailboat that regular people have? Like a stripped down 22' tanzer with an outboard, no expensive extras, and no autopilot or expensive rigging. Lol
I already know how to sail but i still thought this video was great... I don't use all the same sail plans on my small boat that larger yachts use so it is still good to review and refresh that knowledge. Great job! If I want to show any of my non-sailor friends a quick tutorial I will send this this link.
Huub van der Mark aka HulaHoop Enjoyed Your Excellent Video , Sharing with my husband, we would like to join a club..not likely we could buy a boat. If your Young..follow your dreams, so maybe share here on utube.⏰❤️🥰

If I'd found this 4 months ago it would have saved the 2kl grand I spent on my skipper course and 2 weeks of my life. Awesome tutorial.
I'm glad it helped :). I think these days everything is out there for free, just gotta find it :)
Your enthusiasm is overwhelming
Thanks for the knowledge
Thanks Kyle :)
Huub
Easy way to remember port and starboard, stand at the stern (the back), face the bow (the front). Imagine your mast is a big POST, POrt and STarboard.
OMG!! So good and so funny! Best; Confused face, being knocked overboard by the boom, and Damn you Screwge!
Haha thank you Taoelvenmage!
Thanks for you comment Loanword Eggcorn! All the best, Huub
It’s doesn’t get much simpler than this. Well done.
Thank you Patrick!
Excellent!!! For anyone starting out this is the video to watch and then keep building and experiencing as much as possible. You will make some mistakes over the years but hopefully they will be minor and not really hurt you or your pocketbook too much.Thanks...Al
haha, yeah, sailing is already expensive enough!!
Awesome channel. I recently went from vanlife to sail life. Keep the awesome context coming
After seeing this i just bought an old 1965 nicholson 32 sailing boat and go try it out.
Best way I found to remember what side of the boat was what, is a saying that was taught a long time ago. "When we left Port, starboard was on the right. Port left, starboard right.
Nice one!
Kwam deze video tegen en heb toch nog wat van je geleerd, over het trimmen van de zeilen, bedankt daarvoor⚓👍😊
Super leuk!!!!
Thanks Wayne! Yes, from the Netherlands. Wish I had some sexy Italian accent, but no haha
This is a great video! If you are still making them, it would interesting to get a bit more of a demonstration about the use of the whisker pole and as well the additional line you affix to the anchor line to take pressure off the Windlass.
Brraaaaaaavvvvvvvo! Finally someone put a clip together that makes sense of some of the basics of sailing for a newbe like me. Cheers!
Hey Nicholas, that's why I made it! Thank you so much for your comment! I appreciate it! All the best, Huub
man Im left almost speechless... lve always said keep it simple and to the point if you can and you did. luv it..!!!
Thank you so much toddmellott!!!! All the best, Huub
Port and Starboard are called because whoever invented these names as a usual route, had land on left site and stars to guid on right side. Its not just out of the blue.
Portboard left = land board, star board right = stars and open ocean. Mainly came norm from Portuguese and English sailors.
You are a great teacher! Thanks a lot to you and to Scrooge! 😆
Dutch Seaman rules!! Thanks. Just shared the link with my wife and kids!
Thank you very much Alexandre!
Once you cut out the Scrooge, it's pretty simple. Well explained and very entertaining👍
port is the side of the boat that docked to the land
starboard was the side of the boat that had the steering board for steering the boat
Wait? You mean sailing is not taking drone videos of your $500K catamaran anchored in the Bahamas as you snorkel?
You're referring to the channel Zatara...ughh!
Huub,
I have been reviewing your lesson to make sure I’ve got it. Your suggestion about “ you might as well continue to sail around the world,” sounds good! Lol
R/ Jim
Glad this was the easy on. I am now a convinced landsman. I have a headache. Loved the video.
Hahaha, well, at least you learned that! Thanks! All the best Huub
Thank you Luke!!! All the best, Huub
Very well done with a lot of humor. Thanks.
Thanks Jeff :) One day I'll return into sailing
The best training video Ive seen
Awesome, I think I will go and buy one of thoses boats with a big pole in the middle
I think they call it the "Air Oar"? As in "Hang the bedsheets on the air oar".

Hi Hans, currently I’m driving around Central Asia with an oldtimer campervan. I’ll keep it in mind when I’m back into sailing

Excellent job. I'll be watching this a lot. Great instructions.
Thank you Richard!
Wow! Thanks You are now one of my faves. You have a unique ability to explane in the most simple terms how to sail.. Thanks
Hey DANW, that's very nice of you! Thank you very much! Huub
So awesome but a lot of life risking effort. Hope I can sail to my doom or adventure someday. Thanks
I hope so too for you!!
Perfect I only need to buy a boat, thank you.
Thank you Mario! Good luck on the boat buying! All the best, Huub
If you haven't already, consider joining a sailing club. You can sail for a tiny fraction of the cost of owning a boat.
Huub van der Mark aka HulaHoop Enjoyed Your Excellent Video , Sharing with my husband, we would like to join a club..not likely we could buy a boat.
If your Young..follow your dreams, so maybe share here on utube.⏰❤️🥰
