what gets me going about sailing is the peace and tranqility, combined with the absolute freedom of not relying on man made and corporately provided fuel to get where im going. and of course the thrill of being at the mercy of mother nature and her renowned unpredictable moods. becalmed one minute, squal with 30 knot winds the next. never a dull moment.

Thanks for this post . I have yet to ever sail , but learning what I can , should I get on the water someday . Regarding Port and Starboard , I found it a lot easier , ( after trying to learn that Port was the left side ) that starboard was a lot easier to figureout/remember , as pronouncing " Starboard " the letter R is strong , and of course ...R is for Right ...so for me Port = Left ( the other side ) But I guess the point is ...what ever works Had I heard " There's no Port Left in the bottle " , that would have made things easier . Pretty good summary. A correction: they're lines when they have a specific purpose, not ropes (not sure why this guy keeps calling them ropes in the video). Referring to lines as ropes on a boat makes people sound like they don't know anything about boating. Another mnemonic: PORT = LEFT (four letters each).
The 3 corners have been mentioned above. But the 3 sides of a sail also have names. 1. The vertical stretched side (on main against the mast): "luff". 2. The loose side (on main diagonally): "leech". 3. Bottom side: "foot".
I have never been sailing and doubt if I will ever get a chance to do so. (I am 76). I often wondered how sail boats and ships can go in almost any direction regardless of the wind direction. After and while watching Vickings and The Last Kingdom, I just had to become more knowledgeable about sailing. I believe this is an excellent video on the basic of sailing. Thank you so much! Nando
When i started to feel a sudden real interest on sailing after watching some other cruising channels - around 9 months ago - this was the first instructional video i saw, first just out of curiosity, in order to have an idea of what i was getting into, and if it would be a feasible aspiration to someone with no experience like me. I was suprised on how simply you explained the whole theory, which i thought would be impossible to learn in adulthood, since most yachters grew with it since they were children. I was thrilled to discover through this video that i could easily learn it, and thus a crazy idea became an objective, thanks to watching this video. 9 months into it, i am now on my RYA skipper theory course, but also acquired a 28 foot sloop (Fellowship 28) this January, which became the healthiest decision of my life... so here’s what i have to say to you Josh: THANK YOU! I should have left this comment longer ago. Today, while sending this video to a friend as an essential tutorial (in her case refreshment), i realised that i should have written this already months ago. Just so you know the impact of this tutorial on my life - and probably many others!
@@windfal7 A local sailing club is a great place to take lessons and get started sailing at minimal cost. It's much cheaper to use a club's boats than your own, to begin sailing.
i've been hit with a boom 3 time in one year because when i had started i was very short so the boom didnt reach me, I quit for two year and then I went back but I didnt realise that I have grown taller and every time I was tacking I would get a hit of the boom
In just 25 minutes of watching this video Im now confident I can sail across the Pacific. More info here in 25 minutes than reading 10 sailing manuals. GREAT VIDEO.....
Hi Josh, Thank you for the clear instructions and encouraging approach "it's not that difficult". The video has made a difference... This is what happened to me: 1) watched your video 2) started dreaming about sailing 3) bought a boat 4) started to learn sailing based on your advice 5) after two seasons still happy + learning more and more every time going out to the sea I wish you all the best on your sailing trips. Stay safe and take care! Br, Otto "Rookie Captain from Finland"

good luck to you two! and i know this is off topic but I've gotta say this every time i meet a Norwegian in the wild - your language is the most beautiful language I've ever heard and I'm doing my best to learn it :)

@@JoshPostVlogs Thank you for taking a lot of your times to make this video for 360,223 viewers as of today. I have done boating for a couple years and now seeing your sailing tutorial video I am so interested in saling a sailboat. This video is a great encouragement for me to go sailing someday.
Rob Sheldon I sail a piper o.d class 24ft racing/daysailing keelboat and I know what I’m doing but I watched this video for no reason and this is just exactly the same except this boat has an inside on a piper there’s no inside apart from a deep cockpit with space upfront and back for racing sails and repair kits for the bilge pump because they break all the time but it’s expected from a 53yo boat being the first built aswell they’re all a little different no.1 being stormpiper(mine) no.2 being Peter Piper(my friends dads) and 57 others sorry if this didn’t make sense I’m 13 and have just got onto summer break and my brain is resting
This is fantastic! There's nothing like learning from someone who knows it well, but hasn't forgot what it's like not to know. Your presentation follows the natural progression. I, who have sailed a bit, just learned a ton. Thank you Josh!
Can you assist me please supposedly your.course 90 °east the course of the wind is 225 °west mean totally facing the wind what do i to go forward which I'm facing the wind please assist me for this situation please
I’ve just bought a used 1971 Vivacity 20. Paid a bit more for it than I should but it came with everything for $2000 and I’d just stupidly fallen in love. Probably would have paid double once I saw that cabin and pictured the adventures we’d have. A newer outboard, sails, GPS. But needed a LOT of work. No doubt I will be into it for double what I paid for it before long. Bought new trailer tires, re-wired the trailer and am currently prepping the hull for new paint.
SAME me and my brother are fixing fiberglass blisters on the boat he got off of ebay for 870$ XD it doesn't have any ropes so we have to figure out where everything goes, and learn to sail in the next couple of days lmao good luck to you!
This guy is so down to earth and such a great teacher, it’s a blessing to have these videos publicly available, thanks so much, I learned a lot more than just sailing from watching your videos! 🙏
Watched this over a year ago without knowing anything about sailing, bought my first boat, a 15' Chrysler Man o War dinghy, and needless to say I did learn a lot from this video and it lent well when I actually took it out.
Thank you Josh! I've been a motor boater much of my life, have sailed in friend's boats sporadically for many years; but finally, after being in a yacht race last summer, I'm going through my sailing courses right now with the intent of sailing the seas when I retire in 5 or 6 years. This is the best video I've seen on the basics of sailing anywhere. You are a natural teacher - calm, explanative with an ability to take complex terminology and ideas and make them simple, and with a soft, yet enthusiastic inspirational tone - and I've been a teacher/professor since 1988. Well done! Much appreciation...
OH MY FRICKN GOSH!!! You are so amazing. I've purchased books and studied and that wind, water and ice example just made me blush! I am looking to buy my 1st boat / home, a 1985 Hunter Wish me the best!! And thank you SO SO SO MUCH!!!
I watched this video years ago when I got my first beach cat and now I send it to anyone thats interested in sailing with me. Fantastic video that I keep coming back to!
I know this was put up 5 years ago or so but I just shared it with my son who lives near the Gulf in Tampa Bay and I also intend on watching it again tonight with my husband. Great information in just 25 minutes. Thanks so much for your quick and determined lesson on the water!!
Thank you, the best video I've seen yet!.I'm 62 and have always want to learn to ⛵ so I've purchased a 30ft fisher motorsailor here in New England and am going for it! so much to learn but I have a safe comfortable seaworthy vessel. thanks again very informative.
You rock man!!! I am coming back to sail after 40 years of living in a country with no sea and you definitely made my day. I live now in Miami Beach and I came to live where I used to sail. You are such a cool teacher, so relax, so chilled you made me sail with you!!! Thanks! I will be in the water very soon!
I've just completed my RYA Competent Crew course with no prior experience of sailing, and this video explained more than my tutor did in 5 full days! Wish I had watched this before I went!
Josh, you're a good communicator. Enjoyed the video. Appreciated your explanation of courtesy/safety warning about not getting hit by the boom. When she was single, my wife actually got a concussion from being hit by the boom when sailing with a former boyfriend. His loss, my great gain.
Awesome! I recently took sailing lessons, so I understood everything you were talking about. Though for someone who hasn't sailed before they might appreciate a small thing in the corner of the video showing where the boat is in relation to the wind. So they can see in realtime what tacking and jibing is. Like the drawing you did earlier. Awesome video!
Good job. Videos like this will grow the sport and the culture and allow more people to enjoy what sailors already know. It's a feeling like no other. Well done, Skipper.
I watched this before I had even touched a sailboat. Now having done my RYA and my own boat for a year I have to really thank Josh for a great and comprehensive video
I learned to sail as an 11-year-old at summer camp in Wisconsin but never bought a boat nor took the helm of one since. Forty years later my passion was rekindled when I bought my neighbors Laser. Like riding a bike the basics were never forgotten. A few capsizes at first but not any more. It's a small, simple, one-man boat but so exciting to hear the dagger hum at speed on fast, windy days; to hook-up and hike-out, hanging on for dear life, hoping the sail won't shred and nothing breaks. On calmer days the kids like to hang their feet over the bow and ask me to capsize on purpose.
Had a laser as well back in the 90's. Great boat! The "motorcycle of the water", they call it. Fast buggers! Used to do circles around all the sunfish's out on the lake. sold it for the same price I bought it for after 7 years. Can't beat that!
This is awesome Thank you! I watched it once, didn't understand most of it, it was fun to watch. I will watch again and again to help me learn. I am a beginner and can't wait to go sailing! I will probably take some classes or hire a private teacher.
Solid video! I am a Navy Vet, Shellback, salty dog that has spent 62 days at sea. My family owns an oyster farm which I just spent 10 hours on the water working. I also scuba diving, water ski, crab, and fish on the water. I have spent a signification amount of my life on a boat. I must admit I learned a few things. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge. Great job with the video editing. I just shared your video with C-dog who is going to sail the seven seas. I know he will appreciate the tutelage. Thanks. May the wind and your lover always blow you in a good direction.
I enjoyed every minute of it. I would like to point out the you were exceptional in mentioning the hazard of going to the bow. Nothing is as funny in hindsight as being tossed do to judgement errors, I know I would enjoy seeing some different sailing safety gear presented for single hand sailing.
This was brilliant! Perfect prep for taking my weekend sailing class next month. The vocabulary and physics were great and you explained things so well as you did them on the boat.
Sailing is easy. Docking is difficult..... Thanks for sharing! With all of that said, several companies offer inexpensive sailing classes, ASA (American Sailing Association) is the one I've used. As noted, there is much more to sailing than this video, such as rules of navigation, Coast Guard regulations, docking manuvers, and much more. I didn't find any of it difficult, but as I discovered when I took motorcycle lessones after 30 years of riding, just because you can move a boat or a bike doesn't mean there isn't a better or safer way to do it.
You did an extremely good job with this video. I know how long this took, especially with all the post-audio and caption work that you did. Very very nice job -
Thanks a lot I’ve just retired and thought I would start sailing, never done it before great introduction I will join a sailing club appreciate your time and effort John I can’t wait to get sailing
This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you for your wonderful explanations! Ive got boating down, but sailing specific terminology and methods have always been a gray area for me.
I just started taking lessons on a 25 foot keel boat and your video is just perfect. It really helps me memorizing the vocabulary. I have watched your video twice now and will do it again. Thank you for putting together a great instructional video.
Without question the best intro to sailing I have found 30 min with Josh and it all makes sense now. Wind to water relationship and the terms. Your level of confidence as a sailor combined with the ability to explain sailing to newbees is amazing, thanks.
I just returned to San DIego after a thirty plus year hiatus and am living on Sail Bay. Wanted to develop a relationship with the water so am signed up for Laser sailboat lessons at the Mission Bay Aquatic Center. But first wanted to brush up on sailing vocabulary. Took me a while to find this video but well worth the effort. Comprehensive review of the basics and I feel entirely grounded in the basics, without all the terms that create beginners anxiety by overwhelming the learner. I plan on watching it again before the first lesson. Thanks for giving me a firm footing as I return to the water!
@@4x4overlandingwithMitzy hi there! going really well. Learning as I go about plumbing, mechanics, and electric work but thats all part of the fun. Have done a few sails now and its great. Catalina's are really great beginner or expert boats and are designed / built so well.

Dude, I've often wondered just how it works. Great intro! I'm not quite ready for a solo trans Atlantic in a fifty footer just yet. After watching you I'm sure ready to day dream about it! Thanks for the time and effort!
Very informative and easy to follow. This is the first "sailing 101" video I have watched and I got the concepts down. You make this very easy to understand. Thank you.
I'm a total layman but sailing is the most beautiful relationship between nature and physics and engineering. The boats and ships look beautiful to the eye, but then there is even more beauty in realizing they are crafted in such a form for a skilled sailor to make the most out of nature and the water and the wind to propel them. It's so inspiring when knowledge, either on the physics/engineering side or on the being out in the sea side combine to make it so a human being can travel around the world. The sheer amount of different elements and specific vocabulary to them goes to show how advanced and deep all of it is. Thanks for this video.
I spent 4 years steaming away on the ocean while in the US Navy, and I've been missing the ocean. I've considered taking some sailing lessons (and become a true sailor) so I looked up "Sailing 101" to find this video. Thank you for putting a straight forward (no pun intended... ok maybe a little) video that I'll be studying until my wife lets me take some sailing lessons.
Sean.......I was in the Coast Guard as a 18 year old kid....2.5 years sea time...Alaska and Florida...Finally pulling the trigger tomorrow....ASA 101 class......... (PS...58 years old now....never too late to fulfill a goal)!
You know something? I never thought I would understand sailing, but I believe it's not impossible anymore. Like you said, though, it's the jargon that makes it so scary at first. The basic mechanics of it seem within reach now to my little brain. Thanks for this great explanation. I find it endlessly fascinating that you can use this free fuel (wind) to travel the world.
This was the very first RUclips video that taught me to sail. After seeing this I bought a boat, then learned to sail it in Tampa bay, kept at it then sail it to the Bahamas and cruised for about two and half years. Thanks so much for my first lesson!
Thank you for the clear and concise explanation of it all. I've worked on boats, river running and commercial fishing, and have been curious about sailing for a long time. You've made sailing approachable and dispelled some fears, and filled in a whole lot of blanks on the basics for me. Excellent video!
First video I saw of this sort and glad!! Great teaching! My notes are three pages long and that's concise enough for my handy flipbook. The basic moves you demonstrated were clearly essential and digestible. 🤓💯💯💯💯💯💯
So I acquired a 12’ Newport Lockley surprise from a construction job I did. Watched a dozen videos on how to sail, this video has been a tremendous help to say the least!!!!! Made it out on my lake today and sailed for a couple hours using your steps and damn it was awesome!! Thanks for a great single person video
Hey Josh...really good video!!!. I have watched many vids (500 hours worth) and you finally filled in some of the gaps where I had questions! So, I learned a few things and now they make a bit more sense. And I can honesty say after watching you video, I could sail the boat you're on and even do it solos! AND, I've never stepped foot on a sailboat in my life. WELL DONE and looking froward to many more! PEACE OUT!
Best sailing explanation I've seen! I really learned a lot. Combining just enough theory with the demonstration of how it plays out in practice was very helpful. Thank you so much!
Fantastic. I’m heading out tomorrow morning for my first lesson on the water. It’s been a lot of theory and imagining so far, and this video helped put all the pieces in place. Also appreciate how you pointed out your mistakes - I’ll be watchful for the under steer and loose aft stay. Thank you!
What an absolutely great video! I dare say......no, I do say, this is the best intro video to sailing that RUclips has to offer.......and believe me, i have watched A LOT! Well done Mr. Post. I have subscribed, keep up the great work!
Hey Josh I just wanted to say thank you for giving me my first sailing lesson, for demystifying what it means to sail. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
That was an exceptional video! I took sailing lessons 15 years ago and it was a great refresher course. I will definitely watch this a few times to catch up on my vocabulary and technique. Thank you.
Ed, I’m Bill Stapleton from VA (!), no relation I guess, but I also enjoyed Josh’s terrific video and subscribed to see more. Maybe see you out on the water sometime!
Super Nice video! HOWEVER: it stings in my heart to see you walk around alone WITHOUT a life jacket. Safety comes first and starts BEFORE you even leave the harbour and is THE most important thing to learn when you’re a beginner. Apart from this huge mistake: SUPER good explanation and super way of turning something relatively complicated into something relatively simple. Also good angle of recording.
An excellent video in every way but since it's an instructional video for beginning sailors, wearing a vest seems to me a small concession to make to stress the safety aspect. The ones we wear on our boat are so compact & unobtrusive--it's surprising he wouldn't opt for something like that.
Ditto. Your content was clear and well demonstrated, but, when you repeatedly comment about single-handed dangers of going aft without wearing a life preserver (not to mention a clip in to a safety line), what message are you sending to new sailors about these safety precautions--are they just for "sissies"? I don't think you should demonstrate your aft work without demonstrating the precautions "real sailors" use.
Three years ago I was a total greenhorn heading into my first experience onboard a sailboat. This was the first video I watched and, oh boy…!!! it provided me with all essential info I needed back then. I thought I had written a comment thanking you for such great help; but, apparently I didn’t. Today, as a skipper at my sailing community, I emulate what you do here, providing the greenhorns that come onboard my vessel with this very basic knowledge that you, so elegantly, do dispense on this footage. Thank you a lot!!!!

I had been watching sailing and now this morning came across this video and this comment. I'm now on the search to take sailing lessons - God willing!
@@windfal7 A local sailing club is a great place to take lessons and get started sailing at minimal cost. It's much cheaper to use a club's boats than your own, to begin sailing.
@Jaime Paiva great story! Fair winds, mate.
Just yesterday I passed my sailing exam and now I just waiting for the arrival of my license. 14 btw.
How's it going a year on?
I've literally never learnt so much in 25 minutes my whole life - Great beginners guide to some basics. Thank you.
You need to learnt English.
They call it a "boom" because of how it sounds when it hits you in the head.
Coming about...duck
Lol, for real?
It does make sense tho.
@@elF3RCH0 no idea if it is for real but I always thought this too
i've been hit with a boom 3 time in one year because when i had started i was very short so the boom didnt reach me, I quit for two year and then I went back but I didnt realise that I have grown taller and every time I was tacking I would get a hit of the boom

In just 25 minutes of watching this video Im now confident I can sail across the Pacific. More info here in 25 minutes than reading 10 sailing manuals. GREAT VIDEO.....
😂 .. You can't learn to sail by looking or listening.

Hi Josh,
Thank you for the clear instructions and encouraging approach "it's not that difficult". The video has made a difference...
This is what happened to me:
1) watched your video
2) started dreaming about sailing
3) bought a boat
4) started to learn sailing based on your advice
5) after two seasons still happy + learning more and more every time going out to the sea
I wish you all the best on your sailing trips.
Stay safe and take care!

Basic but brilliant. From an old sea dog, you've saved a lot of people a lot of money and they should be very thankful.

Man this is such a great and well explained video. You found the sweet spot between simplifying and still using the traditional vocabulary

@@williamelica4522 You're asking me? I'd say tack 135 degrees close hauled and eventually come about and head north.
Crisp, clear, clean, with no fluff.
That was really informative - thank you.
As a novice sailor who’s stupidly just bought a sail boat, that has helped me a great deal. 👍🏻
Did you buy a new or used one? How much, if you don't mind me asking, for the boat and repairs before it's sailable? :)
Gotta start somewhere
SAME me and my brother are fixing fiberglass blisters on the boat he got off of ebay for 870$ XD it doesn't have any ropes so we have to figure out where everything goes, and learn to sail in the next couple of days lmao good luck to you!

This is the clearest explanation of sailing that I’ve ever seen. Thank you

I am looking to buy my 1st boat / home, a 1985 Hunter
Wish me the best!! And thank you SO SO SO MUCH!!!
I watched this video years ago when I got my first beach cat and now I send it to anyone thats interested in sailing with me. Fantastic video that I keep coming back to!
Thank you for the kind words!
You have no idea how happy I am to have found this video on my first search!! Comprehensive and to the point.

Thank you for over dubbing the voice
I've just completed my RYA Competent Crew course with no prior experience of sailing, and this video explained more than my tutor did in 5 full days! Wish I had watched this before I went!
Thank you for this great compliment! Good luck to you in your new sailing adventures!
You are a gifted teacher young man. You repeat the basic comments as you introduce new ones. Very comprehensive and thorough! Well done.
YES!! The only thing missing and what I was really wanting to know. GREAT video!
That and more on how the tiller is corresponding to the movement.
Good job. Videos like this will grow the sport and the culture and allow more people to enjoy what sailors already know. It's a feeling like no other.
Well done, Skipper.
Hear hear well said
I watched this before I had even touched a sailboat. Now having done my RYA and my own boat for a year I have to really thank Josh for a great and comprehensive video
The amount of knowledge you were able to pack in 25 minutes, with demonstrations, is simply spectacular. Thank you!
Finally! I found a video, that I can recommend the person I sold my sailboat to. He bought it and I have never had a moments peace. Thank YOU!!!!!

By far the best video for beginners about to start sailing in RUclips, hands down so applause Josh, perfection!
You had me at “Is sailing difficult? Is sailing expensive? No” Great video.
LOL same!! suddenly out of nowhere I may have a new hobby.
I enjoyed every minute of it. I would like to point out the you were exceptional in mentioning the hazard of going to the bow. Nothing is as funny in hindsight as being tossed do to judgement errors, I know I would enjoy seeing some different sailing safety gear presented for single hand sailing.
Great video. You hit all the key pints and then demonstrated them to us. You have a great instructor voice. Nicely done!

Allo Josh, I know it 5 yrs old but, without doubt one of the comprehensive basics I’ve ever seen.
Thanks so much.

Very informative and easy to follow. This is the first "sailing 101" video I have watched and I got the concepts down. You make this very easy to understand. Thank you.
This really is the best sailing video on RUclips! I am finishing the ASA 101 sailing course and this helped me a lot at the beginning. Thank you!
How much did ASA 101 cost?
I'm a total layman but sailing is the most beautiful relationship between nature and physics and engineering. The boats and ships look beautiful to the eye, but then there is even more beauty in realizing they are crafted in such a form for a skilled sailor to make the most out of nature and the water and the wind to propel them. It's so inspiring when knowledge, either on the physics/engineering side or on the being out in the sea side combine to make it so a human being can travel around the world. The sheer amount of different elements and specific vocabulary to them goes to show how advanced and deep all of it is. Thanks for this video.
I've always been a power boater. I'm in my later years now and sailing appeals to me.
Please take a lesson! I used to teach sailing and the horror stories I could tell you about inexperienced people 😬
But sailing is so much fun!!! Do it!!!!
I too spent 4-4.5 years at sea in the Navy, and have recently been on a sailing binge.
Thanks for checking back in. Great to hear of your progress and adventures.
Thank you for the clear and concise explanation of it all. I've worked on boats, river running and commercial fishing, and have been curious about sailing for a long time. You've made sailing approachable and dispelled some fears, and filled in a whole lot of blanks on the basics for me. Excellent video!
You may be the best teacher I've ever seen, just loved it !!! Thank you for this amazing guide.

Thank you!
Tremendous. Concise. Clear. Comprehensive. Worth watching again.

Josh,
Your vlogs are fantastic! Well produced, sometimes funny, but always informative. Keep up the good work.
Just came back from a few days of sailing lessons and this video basically summarizes everything. Great walkthrough
Feel like a whole new world just opened up.
Dunno why I thought this stuff was so unapproachable.
Thanks man.
You were at the no go zone, now you are at a close haul
Super Nice video! HOWEVER: it stings in my heart to see you walk around alone WITHOUT a life jacket. Safety comes first and starts BEFORE you even leave the harbour and is THE most important thing to learn when you’re a beginner.
Apart from this huge mistake: SUPER good explanation and super way of turning something relatively complicated into something relatively simple. Also good angle of recording.
@Will Hunter famous last words lol
@Will Hunter lmao my name actually worked!! Lol
Just to clarify I live in indiana and don't have to sailboat mor could afford one lol
Had me a little nervous as well, especially since his boat seems to hold its course pretty well.
An excellent video in every way but since it's an instructional video for beginning sailors, wearing a vest seems to me a small concession to make to stress the safety aspect. The ones we wear on our boat are so compact & unobtrusive--it's surprising he wouldn't opt for something like that.
To be fair he DID point out that a life jacket should be worn.
I.e. Do what I say and not what I do.
Good video just make sure particularly when you're solo sailing to wear a life preserver and when off shore to wear a safety line.
Excellent sailing 101 class. Highly recommended!!!
Many thanks!
The best video on how to sail on RUclips that I have ever seen. Recommended! Thank you Josh Post!
