Don't do what we did. We left for our 1st passage thinking it was going to be easy sailing. But, everything that could have gone wrong did. If we didn't have a super experienced friend aboard I don't know what would have happened. Sailing is amazing, but it gets scary fast. Thanks to Jamie and @ParlayRevival for buddy boating with us.

Rule #3 never leave the dock without a Victor Knox knife. It's made for cutting rope in seconds. I've fished offshore for 21 years and we never leave without atleast 3 knives on board.
@@darrellp8172I’ll pick one up, which one? The problem was the line was wedged deep into the small gap between the prop and saildrive.
This would be the best sailing channel if only David could get those videos out.
That’s the truth!
Give him time. He's a great ytber but has a lot going on
#truthbomb
The spirit of the channel is Epic Fail & Repair (with kids on board) which should have Ms of views.
He should slow down the editing, it's a constant shooting info for 30mn.
@@deepdivedelight He could have split it up into 3 shows but we would all get bored, so nah he's a freakin genius bro in his OWN RUclips class.
Am sorry, this may be fun to quite a few people, perhaps also to yourself, but this was a great video of HOW NOT TO SAIL. A boat that is basically not seaworthy, a crew that knows absolutely nothing, equipment that is failing, this is a disgrace. I worked as a pilot for the coast guard in the Caribbean for many years and flew countless SAR missions. Accidents can happen at any time and you (plus your boat) need to be prepared for that. You were obviously not prepared.
Do yourself and all others on the water a favor: get this boat in seaworthy condition, repair all the equipment, make sure it functions, get sailing lessons, get lessons in navigation, rules of the sea etc etc. Your life and that of your family depends on it.
I hope this was the low point in your sailing career. You and Mary have a good attitude, but you had your family out there. That boats condition was sketchy when it left the dock.
Came here to look for this comment and was shocked it's so far down, the ocean is truly dangerous
I’m totally appalled, taking children out in the open ocean with an unprepared crew and boat. These people should be prosecuted for negligence. FYI, I am an experienced sailor with thousands of miles of experience. Absolutely appalling!
Totally agree!
I've chosen to believe that this video was mostly filled with made-up drama for the camera and wasn't actually documenting all the dangers he put himself, Jamie, the crew of the Parlay, and his family in. I'm better off with 6 AGM batteries I have to constantly move around the cockpit instead of having an AIS! WHY BOTHER TO WRITE DOWN THE CHANNEL FOR THE RADIO OF YOUR ONLY LIFELINE OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE OCEAN?! I CAN PROBABLY JUST RUN INTO THEM OUT AT SEA!!!! WHY SHOULDN'T YOU WAIT FOR THE ONLY SAILOR WITH ANY EXPERIENCE TO GO BELOW AND DO THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF WHAT HE JUST SAID?!?!?! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Your story telling and way of splicing all the picture material together makes it worth seeing even a year after the facts. Enjoyed it!
Two years 😂 but who’s counting
@@Kenriko technically 2.25 😭😭😭
I don't know about everyone else but me, personally, you couldn't ask for a better friend, a better man then Jamie. He has done so much to help people realize their dreams - dude's just amazing.
David - I think you, your wife and kids are amazing. Your courage, insanity and adventurous spirits are to be admired and will see you thru this incredible journey!
aw thanks eric! and yes, can't ask for more than a Jamie!
David your fiberglass days are probably NOT over. Watch recent Parlay videos where the bow sail attachment points peeled back. Stay safe!!
@@timetravel6 not looking forward to it!!!
Where have you guys been? All of us love you guys, we really do miss you when you dont post a video for us. We all understand you guys are going thru some hectic stuff but we really need you to keep us posted, we thought you guys gave up on us.
will do joe! we'll never give up , we're no quitters
@@david_shih because of you and parley i finally purchased a 25 ft catalina and am learning to sail her, i want to get a much bigger boat in the future. I just retired and figured what the hey, ive always wanted to travel and ive seen just about everything on land, why not a boat. Keep up the great videos i love them.
@@josephkrumroy4730 dude. So good to hear! You’re going to love it. And the the Catalina 25 is the perfect boat to learn on! Happy for your brother!
David’s face when he realized the zip ties were holding and there was a path for success: just awesome. That’s what it’s about. That is the best feeling after hitting an obstacle . Way to overcome. Looking forward to more adventures. Fair winds guys
so true...there's a way! thanks tuck
Everyone needs a Jamie to get through the hard times…
hell yes!
HOLY SHIT HE'S BACK! ❤
hahahahha
Jamie is probably my favorite RUclips sailor. "Didn't want to kill the kids!" 😂
he's my fav too!
I've missed you Shih family!! Good to see you back!
Glad everyone made it home safely. I raced a 150 mile long race thru some pretty bad storms in the Gulf of Mexico. We finished the race and tied up the boat in a slip around midnight. A little while later I saw a friend's boat come in, so I walked over to see how they'd done. He said they survived just fine but one of their crew got severely seasick and had puked 28 times. About that time, we heard a noise nearby and we turned around to see that crew member puking off the pier. My friend turned to me and said, "29 times".
I’ve been following several sailing channels for years & a few for a decade.
The first minute of this video made me realize I’ve found another channel who understands how to make great content.
Well done, + one sub.
Wow, thank you!🙏
@@david_shih now if only somebody knew how to post regularly... ;)
@@david_shihu need to post weekly David...I promise u we will get you more subscribers....I will promote you everywhere....
@@legbreaker2762 lol
@@legbreaker2762 I second that though! Haha.
Always enjoyable to watch David turn a disaster into a funny time at sea
Little Coms Tip(actually it is a legal requirement), you should always be listening on Ch16, even if you are on an agreed channel or in this case misunderstanding 72 or 69 Ship to Ship Ch your VHF should still have Dual Watch and listen for any traffic on 16, or have a second VHF always set to CH16. If you both had 16 on you could of called up and moved to your chosen channel😉
yeah...we should have set the boat radio to 16...or one of the other handhelds...or just set it to scan
Jamie is a legend he deserves his own boat.. great content 🙏👍👍🇬🇧
im sure someone is just going to give him one 1 day.
Missed your videos so much.
I m so happy to see you posting again!
Great video, David! Thanks for sharing!
I really don't care that the timelines are now out of sync by at least 6 months! David, you have a natural way to tell your story and it is GREAT!!! Hope Beryl didn't affect you.
Hey thanks for the support. Definitely get a lot of mad people bc everything isn’t real-time! Beryl took our mainsails, but we are due for a new one!
@@david_shih Not mad, just hungry for more of your excellent vids
You and Mary are so entertaining can’t wait for you to be full time cruisers and RUclipsrs. Hope we see more of you and the family sailing into the sunset soon.
Glad you’re still alive, man. Great video. Your editing and commentary is on point as always. Keep up the good work, just try for twice a year at least. This once a year videos is a hrs one to wait for. 🤙
This is about the level of knowledge you would have on your first major cruise as a sailor. I actually think they did fairly well.
i agree, but most self proclaimed experienced sailors all seem to think everyone should be born with a lifetime of sailing experience...
Yet more proof that you're the ultimate human being and a super hero. Your kids are growing up so fast!
thanks brendan! too kind
David or maybe Marie is the best editor. Great job Jamie a true captain. David a captain in training on the fast track. This channel will grow as we all see what not to do. But the recap is most valuable. Kids safe job number one. You got this David.
maybe we should rename to channel to "don't do what i did"!
In the VHF course, they state that if you can reach each other on the dedicated channel, everyone goes back on stand by on 16. Safety, you know. You both must have skipped that chapter. 😅😅 oh, do you have a VHF licence?😂😂
what's VHF, we only have regular radios on our boat. 😂
At last, good to see you're still afloat, keep them coming David 😂
Wow, that was painful to watch. Fortunately no one was hurt, thank God Jamie was there. I recall Parlay's post about this 2 years ago, but I don't think they covered all the mechanical issues.
Hopefully you've spent the intervening 2 years making sure the boat was indeed ready to sail, and have had a chance to sail in less challenging conditions with some proper instruction. You've got good sense about mechanical things, and great enthusiasm, but any one of the number of rookie mistakes you made could have been tragic.
GREAT video, David. I think I was most impressed with your courage and determination to free the line from the prop. That AND all the cuts to different locations as you are talking about the same thing. Please explain how you do that so seamlessly in one of your future videos, please. And are YOU the person doing all the editing? Impressive!
it take a lot of planning and a lot of shooting and reshooting, but i feel like it makes the video go much more smoothly and more fun to watch. yes, i'm the one editing, that's why they take forever...i'm kind of figuring it out as i go! are you into videography?
Great to see you back, Dave! You're an inspiration!
Where ya been brotha?
Great video as always and very entertaining even though a lot of it was painful for you folks but that experience is priceless.
Jamie is a beast and a heck of a sailor.
You and your family will be to one day.
Take care and God Bless...
We sold everything in 2017 and have been full time rving ever since. Best decision we ever made. Good luck on selling and on your final move Dave.
This was like 'lets go sailing...how hard can it be?'. You should do a video on Jamies one hour debrief at the end!
haha exactly...how hard could it be?!
So happy for a new video! I've missed your incredibly entertaining story-telling style. Informative and never boring. Looking forward to more :)
Wow dude hell of a sail! We laughed out loud at the shot of the drone looking at you while it flew through the shrouds 😂
thanks raf! dude you guys are about to crush 100k! so stoked for you!
Welcome back! Love your vids!

Been missing you guys...glad you made it. Can't wait for the next one❤🎉
Dude...proud of you. So many challenges and you made it through. Seems like a rite of passage in both literal and figurative sense.
Smart move bringing Jamie
David, Mary, you are back !! Now You Tube will become interesting again, LOL. You should meet Rob. He is kinda accident prone as well. Jamie, what can be said? A life saver, a good friend, an excellent sailor? You can take something back with you from this adventure, or at least something 'off'. With all that David had you do i am sure you lost 10+ pounds ;). Take care everyone. P.S. Once the children become accustomed they will be of great value as crew.......
can't wait till the kids are old enough to help!
Wow, that's exciting knowing you're that close to such a life changing event. David, have you and the family planned your 1st major sail yet?
Another great episode Dave👏Hands down one of the most entertaining and charismatic RUclipsr’s out there. Glad you and your lovely family will be living the dream on the water. Look forward to your future episodes. 👍
aw thx brad! appreciate the support!
Awesome to have you and your family back. Great video
thanks tammy!
Great job!!! 🌴🌴
Oh my, kids look like they adapted well to boat life even though they didn't know they almost perished at sea. Thank God you had Jamie on board and thank God you had children on board so Jamie didn't kill you lol. Looking for to all of your families adventures be safe buy some more zip ties😅
more zipties!!!!! agree!
I hope you continue putting out these videos. You guys are a hoot and your editing is great. You'll definitely be one of the top sailing channels if you stick with it. We're rooting for you.

Hey Dave. Awesome video. As hectic as that sail was, it was very entertaining! Thanks for the ride! Now for a few more videos from you, and well done for arriving with all on board and nobody keeled! ;-)
glad you liked it! adrian! thanks for watching, more to come!
Wow that was pure improv man!
Hi David Jamie and crew wow, what a crazy journey. Good to see you didn’t stop smiling through the whole event. Keep up the good work. Really appreciate the videos cliff from Australia
yo cliff thanks for watching bro!
good to have you and your family back , at last some good entertainment after so long a absence ....... keep us all laughing please and safe passages
Jamie is a legend!!
so true!
Rough start, but all part of the process! I'm sure Colin was frustrated, but you guys are just starting out and he has the benefit of many years experience - all in time! FYI I've seen a lot of folks keep diving knives secured in mounted locations throughout the boat for just such emergencies; make sure it's in a spot you can access in rough seas, and in a sheath for protection. (Good opportunity to teach the kids some safety measures, as well.) All in all, really great video editing, and glad to see you back at it; important part is asking for feedback and not giving up, so you're well on the way! Fair winds. ✌
thanks gogo! we'll never give up...
David I watched you fix your boat and people will love your videos because you are 100% real people no BS and we can relate and want a slice of your great adventure ! Cheers Shih Family

I'm amazed how much footage you get in all manner of conditions and stress, and how well it's edited together. Excellent job man.
too kind, sometimes you really don't feel like filming, especially in those super stressful situations!
David, I appreciate you publishing this video you are the man🎉
thanks so much doug!
👍✅Love it Dave & Mary🤣Thanks for the video👏

Hello from the Clemons family, we met at anapolis boat show 2 years ago! We love watching your videos, we're hoping to follow in your footsteps and switch from RV to boat life! Your video is exactly how I feel our adventures go, chaos, unprepared but having fun and dragging the kids along! Please don't wait so long to post, we miss you guys and keep making the content man! P.S. Colin is going to be pissed all over again watching this! 🤣
doooo it!!!!! make the jump already!
Absolutely awesome on so many levels! So happy for you guys and do great to see Jamie and Colin! Your video quality/sound crispness/ editing and overall camera presence is next level. That goes for everyone! Cheers and big congrats!

Nice.. good to see you back.
HeY David Shih glad to have you back with another awesomely funny entertaining video. Hat's off to Mary for being able to put up with you and Jamie. Sorry to hear about Engines I bet that cost a penny or two to get the new engine mounts for both engines. It sure looks like you've a few issues that will be needed to be taken care of before actually sailing on full time schedule. I didn't hear if you stated you had a depth finder ? Oh yeah just to let you know PARLAYS in NZ lol. Hope all goes well look forward to you next video cheers
Another entertaining episode! Just wish it were more regularly released.
Love it! Laugh every vid!
Love the video style, have watched it twice, probably to late but fit captive engine mounts.
Look forward to the next episode.
twice? thanks so much warren! what are captive mount?S i'll have to do some googling!
I totally enjoyed this video. Waiting patiently on the next one. However long it takes. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
sooon...promise !
That was epic. Like edge of your seat stuff. Not sure I can hang when your videos have this level of turmoil! LOL. Hope things have calmed down.
luckly its not this crazy every time we sail! thanks for watching kim!
Oh my gosh! Best video ever! 😂
This was like watching a slow motion train wreck, I couldn't look away because something else would happen. "Sailing is about..." going to sea in a seaworthy boat. I am sympathetic to the fact that you had other considerations but you are really brave!
not quite sure our boat will ever be as fully seaworthy as i'd like it to be....but we've got a lot of backups and contengincy plans now.
@@david_shih Again, I am sympathetic as boats are NEVER 100% done.
@@Tillersweep and new things that i didn't even know existed keep on breaking.
