@@JoshPostVlogs Yes. Thank you! Youre a great teacher because you can put yourself in the shoes of your students. Something most teachers here on youtube forget about. Theyre not mean spirited but theyre so used to sailing and its terminology they forget whats important.
Good video, Josh. One tip is to attach the topping lift before you detach the pole from the stanchion. In this way the pole remains attached to the boat and won’t disappear into Neptune’s locker if you find yourself imbalanced and letting go of it - a more likely situation when you are first learning or sailing offshore.
You are the bees knees when it comes to explaining everything! Interspersing one camera angle with another and the add in diagrams all help first timers I often wonder if youve had a teaching background(?) AND all done without the imbiquous click bait. Excellent vid. You are the man!!
Spyglass Freo West Aus - Many thanks! I don't have a teaching background but I'm a trial lawyer so I learned early the importance of plain speaking to engage the listener (jury). Otherwise, people will tune out with too much legalese. I think the same applies to sailing, or anything really. Plus, I'm from Missouri - the "show me" state and the home of Harry Truman who was known for his "plain speaking." Cheers and happy sailing!
I sailed with my dad as a kid. But now 30 years later I've forgotten as much as I remember and am trying to catch up while I shop for a boat. And your stuff is the best I've found on RUclips. I appreciate the time and effort you put into these videos. Dad never flew a Spinnaker, so this is all new. But it is useful because I won't be waiting long to pick one up. In my mind they will always be THE sail that represents sailing.
I am just coming to the end of a five year recon of a 1970 33' Ranger sailboat...my new sails and rigging is going on this week, I've always been a power boater ( this is my fourth complete hull up recon boat) and being a Navy veteran I have a special love and romance for the deep blue, and have always wanted to try sailing. Though I have enjoyed "Summer Wind" on engine power, it's now getting to the "sailing" phase ( I acquired it without sails) and I have arranged to have lessons, but with Josh's videos it seems easy, the instructions are simple and easy to understand, and although I will still take a lesson, I feel confident after watching the Josh Post sailing videos...a very good instructor...."fair winds and calm seas Josh!"...
The video is a bit older but oh boy it's the best instructions I have seen!! Signed up for a two day spinnaker training on Lake Thun, Switzerland this weekend and I'm ready to make all the mistakes with confidence.
Though sailing since 12 yrs, use of a spinnaker & racing are new at 58, having recently joined a crew “down the road” in the West River. Thanks for decreasing worldwide spingnorance. Best wishes. Charles / USAF & SWA Pilot.
Thanks. The spinnaker is definitely the most intimidating part of sailing, especially if racing since you have to work fast. You are similar to my friend Sam who was in this video. He’s a former USAF and Delta pilot.
Oh boy, enjoyed this how-to video. It brings back my PHRF racing days. I was backup fore-deck crew but got many opportunities without ever a foul up. When jibing, the boat turns “under” the symmetrical spinnaker also in a good jibe the crewman will feel the pole gets “light” like its floating. That’s when it’s easiest to release it from the mast. When the asymmetric spinnaker boats became popular I didn’t enjoy racing as much. They changed the courses to have longer reaches and shorter runs to favor them.
Thanks Josh! Went on a sailboat second time in my life today for a lesson and did the spinnaker. We did couple jibes,i got to change the pole, it was fun, felt like doing something. I should have rewatch this before the lesson :-D
It's unsurprising that just like 3 years ago when the best introductory video to sailing was yours, now as I'm getting on an amateur race team the best one for learning the basics of symmetrical spinnaker is Josh once again!

Really good information. I just took a Sonar 22' class where we put on the Spinnaker however we made it simpler and did not use the pole. Our instructor teaches at Annapolis the Navy academy cadets. He want to show us you can fly a Spinnaker without a pole and still do just fine. I hear of people losing their pole and thinking all is lost. Thanks, Tim. Yes, the spinnaker is intimidating with lots of extra lines and components. I was equally intimidated until I made this video with Sam. I realized after the fact that it wasn't' too crazy. You definitely need two people though. Good luck!
Great video! This is my first season racing, and I am the bowman on an Olson 30. My skipper sent me this video to review before a race. One suggestion about jibing: the way you demonstrated requires the bowman to hold and flip the pole 180 degrees - difficult to balance on a pitching foredeck, and damn near impossible on a large boat with a long and heavy pole. The way my skipper teaches is to first grab the active sheet and bring it to the mast. In one quick motion you can open the jaw, remove the mast ring, and insert the old sheet (now the new guy). Then instead of spinning the pole, simply slide it outboard and bring the other jaws to the mast. Reverse the process again in one motion by removing the old guy from the jaws and putting it on the mast. It helps if you have an extra crew manage assist by adjusting the topping lift and downhaul tension during this process.
I’ve watched two of your sailing videos and I must say they have been excellent. I have my ASA certifications and have sailed an O’Day 222 for three years, and your videos still have taught me some nice techniques. Keep up the lessons. Thank you.

Thank you so much for this. Very well made and engaging. I am a solo sailor and have always been too intimidated by the spinnaker to ever use it but have heard from many other single handers that they use it in light conditions. I'll have to give it a try after giving it a shot with a helper.

Well done. Double handed it's pretty tricky to do it. One tip while hoisting it up. The halyard and the sheet should be pulled at the same time, to make sure the sail fills nicely and does not curl.
Hello. A little tip from me: If you gybe with the spinnaker, do the pole first into the jackring of the mast, then into the rope. It prevents you from pulling you the pole out of your hands, when the wind comes stronger.
Really excellent tutorial Josh. Many people rush these things, assuming more experience and knowledge of jargon on part of viewer than we may have. This really is step by step, and something I feel I can put into practice. Thank you.
Your tip on pre-feeding the guy and keeping some tension on it (or at least cleated with no slack) so the spinnaker pole doesn't smack the forestay is valuable. Good vid.
When I watched your other video, rhe part one, I had no clue about anything and was so grateful for the dumbed down version of everything. I have never been sailing at that point. When I watched your other video, rhe part one, I had no clue about anything and was so grateful for the dumbed down version of everything. I have never been sailing at that point.
Now I am looking at spinnaker sailing, and I was a bit scared because you hear all those horro stories of people capsizing and such. But it seems faily simple.
Useful. Thank you. M
You are a wonderful teacher! I am taking my ASA 101 in San Diego in a month, and I feel that I will have gained some ground already with your teaching! I will keep watching your videos!

Thanks for sharing this lesson on how to rig and fly the spinnaker. I'm going to crew on a friends 24 ft yatch tomorrow and he is going to train me up on how to rig and fly the spinnaker on Cardiff Bay Marina Wales UK.
Merci ! I watched many videos on basic spinnaker training, and this one was one of the most clearly explained. Thank you! I will comment again after i try on my own. Next month?!?! Cheers.
Thanks for the instruction. Now for the first time l know what the
spinnaker is and does. Great stuff.
You are a gifted teacher. I'm very impressed and grateful.
Thank you for this excellent video. A very handy piece of advice for short-handed crews. Love it!
Great instructions video for a first-timer like myself.
Just wanted to add another thanks ! Especially for just getting right to the content instead of all the fluff. Very informative and well done, sir.
I love your videos Josh. Want to start learning how to sail this spring. I mean, actually on a boat and not just watching videos, although they're great.
Oh wow. I just discovered your videos and I live in Newport Beach and am taking lessons at OCC and just joined the Oasis sailing club.
Awesome. Thanks for watching! Let me know and I’ll take you out for a sail. ⛵️
