Wow this is great, thanks Mike! I’m gonna redo my deck screens just like you did. I was totally stumped on how to fit a single screen in with the 2x4 handrail cutting across the gap in the middle. Use two screen frames, one above and one below the handrail, genius!

Thank you!! Just what I needed to know. I have a covered porch and plan on screening it in. My builder was charging a fortune to do this so, I decided to tackle it myself and save some money (have you seen the price of building lately?). I'm pretty handy and just needed some ideas on how to accomplish this. I have to do this from the porch side because the back of the house has a walkout and I'm not planning on getting on a ladder to reach the second story. And yes, that is the perfect stain color for your home, I love it!

@@tacobelle69 I'm still waiting for the builder to fix something on the covered porch so I haven't put it up yet. I should do it this week and I'll let you know. I'm not sure who will enjoy it more, me or my little cat :) The covered porch is open on only one side. The covered area will be about 9ft tall and 17 ft wide. I'm doing it by myself and I'm happy to provide the details.

It's not under the deck correct. We don't have much issue with bugs in there even with the bottom of the deck not being screened

Good video Mike, one questions about ripping the 2x6 to make 2x2, the actual size of the 2x6 is 1.5"x5.5" so is the final size after ripping is 1.5"x1.5"? or 1.5"x2"?

Hey, Mike! I’m excited about doing this to our large back porch! I have a few questions, before we get started:
1. We live atop a large hill, and we get covered in pollen each spring and summer. Will the screening prevent pollen from covering everything on our porch?
2. How would we clean the screening, if it did stop the pollen?
3. How will this screening stand up to animals and small children? There are several feral cats who love to take up residence on our porch each winter. Will this keep them from getting in, or will they be able to eat/claw their way through it? Is there a stronger material that stands up to these wild little animals (kids included 😂)?

Hi Jen!
1&2. Screening will not keep pollen out (ask me how I know lol!) and the best way to clean it we've found is to first use a blower to knock off the majority of the pollen and then follow up VERY lightly with a slightly damp magic eraser. Obviously cleaning from the outside is a bit more difficult. We honestly haven't cleaned the outside of the screen very because out porch is over 14' off the ground.
3. This screen will not stand up to cats or much impact as it's a lighter material (which allows it to not obstruct the view). They make bronze screening (amzn.to/2O6fxyU) which is very durable from what I've been told.

I love it. would you suggest treating termites first or after? I know probably first but my dad was telling me that treating termites would be a waste of money 😮 I sure wish i had all the machines and tools you have.
Thank you! I couldn't really give a recommendation on treating for termites before or after this. The shop has been a very slow progression since I was in high school.

Beautiful ! We want to screen an existing porch and wonder what brand/type screening to use… there are so many types, but we want durability and visibility too. We have beautiful views and would like to maintain a natural color. Can you recommend a good strong screening that isn’t too dark?

I'm living in a tiny house due to one of those wretched California wildfires, and we have a small porch we could probably screen in.
Does the screen help keep water out? The wind currently carries every raindrop all through our tiny patio- we'd like to be able to sit down and take our shoes off before entering as we are in the muddy middle of nowhere, but unless you want to sit on a wet chair and get your feet wet coming in, it really doesn't work. We have pretty hard winds, so I suspect some water would get through a screen but I'm hoping that surface tension of water might mean that more of it doesn't make it all the way through, or at least not as far into the patio. Its about 10x4, and if any of it could stay dry we'd be thrilled.
We can make some alterations, but they have to be fairly affordable and be aesthetically pleasing or the folks we are renting the property from won't be happy.
The screen does help some, but as you assume some rain will still come through. Not as much as without the screen though. It's fairly windy where we live at well.

What did you do between the very bottom rail and the deck? Did you add screen for the mosquitos?
There's a 2x6 that I trimmed to for under the bottom rail and the deck. There's no screening under the deck boards, just on the "walls" and it's done well. There are bugs that still get in occasionally, but nothing like before it was screened in.
Hey Mike did you have to add another section of wood? On the bottom of your inside porch for the screen to be attached with no gaps? My house has a porch but there’s gaps in the bottom so I was curious?

What was your time and cost? I have a similar porch area but on concrete instead of decking and I want to make it glassed in for a breakfast nook. I really liked the video.
Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I don't remember the cost since it's been a few years at this point, but time wise it only took an afternoon to make the frames, about a day to paint, and a few hours to wrap them with screen.

It's doing great! No signs of rot, but I primed and painted every surface before assembly with exterior grade paint👍
Good job Mike. Question, why did you make panels for the long wall but you attached the screen and trim directly to short wall?

Did I miss something? What abut that 3" gap between the railing frame and the deck? The mosquitoes will definitely find that opening.
Nope you didn't miss anything. I used a 2x6 between the deck and the rail to seal it up.

Thanks! You can screen the underside of the deck for sure, but then again there a small gap under the door too so it won't scrub on the deck. In all honesty I don't think you can block out insects 100%, but with the screening up we've never sat out there and have been bothered by bugs which was not the case at all when we first moved in 🤣
Did you do anything below the deck so that bugs wouldn't come up between the floor slats?
We thought about that but didn't because of the difficulty of then cleaning the screen below the deck. We thought of making some frames that would be screened, but opted not to and haven't seen a hug issue with bugs crawling up.

Nope, standard pine that was well primed and then given two coats of paint.

Did you end up using a skirt board around the bottom of the railing? I have cats, and I'm wracking my brain on how to close that off.
Yes I added a 2x6 that was notched around the original pieces to close in the bottom.

Thanks, we absolutely love the space now! I looked into that system actually, but didn't use it simply because the back of our porch is about 20' off the ground and I didn't want to deal with scaffolding or tall ladders for the installation. If we had a ground level porch I would have used it without hesitation! Cheers!

This is great Mike. Looking to do something similar for my porch. Would you recommend pressure treated wood for the screen frames? Or would regular lumber do?
Thanks John! If you're painting the wood go with southern yellow pine, cedar, or red wood. If you're staining then pressure treated will be fine, but it'll have to season about a year before it's dry enough to accept stain. Good luck!
How did you fill in the gap on the bottom rail?

What did you use for the trim pieces that you covered the screen with around the door?
If I recall I just cut some strips off of a 2x4 or 2x6. You could use some 1x2 furring strips though if needed, they would just be a bit thicker that what I used. Hope that helps!

It's vinyl, not siding though.

IMO it looks great. The screens are aren't noticeable so the porch doesn't end up looking dark.

How do you know we're to space the 2x4's
That's a great questions. Typically load bearing walls are 16" on center and non load bearing is 24" on center. Since this is a non load bearing wall, I ending up around 24" on center.
