Drumset fundamentals, really really cool visual here this will help out a lot of young drummers. I hope there hip to what's going on here and take advantage of it. I wish I had this 50 years ago...
Hi Vaughn, Thank you for your encouraging comment !! There's so many peoples out there, sharing amazing knowledge. I believe i had to give something for all the knowledge i received in my life.
The legendary Purdie half-time shuffle, and this is a great way to practice all the tricky ghost notes with the snare while maintaining the hi-hat rhythm followed by the kick drum in between. It's such a clever and relaxed shuffle, which only Bernard Purdie can do it on his own unique way. It took me 3 days to master this one little tricky groove. Once mastered, it really plays and feels wonderful on the drums for a fairly long time.
Wild!!!!!!! I've been a professional musician for year's playing guitar and keyboards. This channel has opened my eyes to the world of the drum set. All this time, I never knew what it was that made drummer's so special, now I know. Thank you so much for this channel. I'm 60, but feel like getting a trap kit, now. LOL
Hi Jack !! Thank you very much for this encouraging words !! I believe that some simple geometry like this can really worth a thousand of words... I'm really happy to discover that it help a lot of peoples... Please don't hesitate and buy a drumset, it's a lot of fun :)
Hi there, great presentation of basic stuff. Suggestion: play each part alone for 4 bars each, then begin with bass part, add hihat after a few bars, add snare and so on. Would be helpful.
Hi Minunmaani, Thank you very much. I'm glad you liked it ! It's ok for me as long as you are not just re-posting my original videos, you can use my content for your tutorials etc..
Hi Cyberfit, You can surely accent the 3rd triplet, I believe, the way you accent the groove, is really a personnal thing. So this series is not design to be the "truth" but just showing the general feel of a particular groove. There's really no right or wrong way in my opinion. Thank you for your comment !
@@DrumsetFundamentals I understand what you mean, but I feel like accenting the third triplet using the Moeller method is close to the heart of the half-time shuffle since the 3rd triplet sort if "is" the shuffle (i.e. the 1st triplet could belong to any groove). I thought it might be worth pointing out since it really changes a lot of the feel, and I think that's how Purdie, Porcaro etc. does/did it. But I'm a rookie so I may have gotten it wrong as well.
@@DrumsetFundamentals It absolutely has to do with "what" is played. A shuffle beat in 6/8 is different than one in 4/4, it has two more beats. It's why this doesn't sound like the famous video of Bernard playing it. A circular diagram of a shuffle in 6 would need 18 dots (3x6) instead of 12 (3x4). I figured out what was going on watching Josh Merhar's video. ruclips.net/video/RynRw-7ziAI/видео.html.
No. A two bars of 6/8 contains 12 "pulses" like a bar of triplets in 4/4 containts 12 "pulses". time signature got nothing to do with "what" is played. You can write anything in any time signature. But usualy we choose to write in the most logical way. For this groove it doesnt matter if it's 6/8 or 4/4 for you, the pattern is the same, only your "main" beat is slower or faster in your head. Thank you for your comment
Hi Jerry, I don't need to do any research about this in particular. Time signature got nothing to do with "what" is played. If what you play "loop" over 12 pulses, you can consider it to be one bar of 4/4 in triplets, or one bar of 3/4 in 16th, or even 2 bars of 6/8 in 8th notes. But you can also write it in 5/4 or 11/8 whatever you like, it'll just not be a "one" bar loop. If you listen to anything you can guess what is the most logical time signature, but there's no right or wrong about it. If you play the 12 pulses pattern of this video in a 3/4 context, it'll sound unusual, but it's perfectly ok, an even a cool experiment to shift the listener perspective. You can disagree, but it's just facts. Thank you for taking time to comment and happy practicing !
Its nice, but why don't you actually match up there sound with visual? For instance, you have the right number of bass notes, but it clearly does not match up with the visual
@@DrumsetFundamentals Oh.. how strange. Now I see it as matching. Hmm. that is so odd. I've noticed it before . I bet it is a latency thing. I don't know how else it could happen
@@kilmoturtles1 Sometimes happens that the video and audio go slightly out of sync, depending of a bunch of factors (network, video, browser, window size, wind direction, air humidity, LOL), and it's completely maddening when you're watching drum videos. Sometimes reloading or opening on a new window fixes it.
This visual is less helpful than just simple notation. Feels like they tried to reinvent the wheel but, came up with a triangle instead. I literally just listened to it and plugged it into guitar pro. This visual is unhelpful as it is ugly to look at. If there was something better than standard notation we'd be using it already.
if you brushed up on your knowledge of mr purdie, you would realise that he doesn' read a lick of notation. for sure, mr purdie would condone this method.
Don’t worry about them ghost notes! Ain’t nothing but rebound! 😂❤️🙌
Ha! Nice.
I’ve remembered that forever lol
Haha ! It's a Purdie's saying!
😂😂🤣🤣😂💙🥁💙
So true haha
I've watched lots of 'how to play the Purdie shuffle' videos but this is visually the best
Hi electrosnerd ! thank you !
Yes, I got the grove in no time

And this video is heaven for bass players.
If you made this into an interactive app, you'd sell a lot of downloads. This is a great way to learn!
Play it x1.25 you get Fool in the rain 😍
Play it at 2 and we're into industrial or something.
OMG!😍
OMG!😍
More like 1.5
Play it like Purdie, and add innumerable swinging ghost notes, hi hat barks, and a ton of soul. THEN you’ll have it.
The sound quality here is excellent. Helps so much!! Thank you!!!
I can genuinely say this sped up the learning process for me dramatically. Thanks for this!
This entire youtube channel is a masterpiece of information design!!
Hi Avalon, thank you for your comment !

I love the velocity=radius mapping in the viz. this is tasty
please make every video ever with this visual aid. you're really awesome for thinking of this
Hi Mark, there's a lot more coming :) just need a little bit of time to do it correctly
Great !now I can go play fool in the rain 🌧

Using this as a backing track for almost anything... just seems to have the subdivisions that allow for a lot.
This is great,i just went thru your playlist its such a good way to learn these grooves.Keep them coming please 😭

This visual method for learning a rhythm is exactly what I needed. Will you be making more of these? Thanks for sharing!

My dad played with Pretty Purdie!!
That's amazing !! I believe it was a lot of fun, Bernard seems so cool :)
Also have you thought of designing an app that has the patterns pre-set in it? I think it would sell
I love your work ! I have shared your page few times now in my videos, I hope it is ok. Greetings from Finland !

real helpful channel! I am working on my speed and the 16th note metronomes help out a lot! Thanks for that! :-)
Thank you ! i'm happy you find them useful ! i wish you a productive practice time.
You too!
Great!
Play this groove at 1.5 speed and you've got Rosanna!
hi thank you so much , can this shuffle be used for a waltz ? could you please do one for waltz, thanks
Isn't the hi-hat accented notes supposed to be on the 3rd triplet rather than the 1st? Like when you play it using the Moeller method.

would you do one for the motorik variants?
Hi Walking, I don't know the "motorik variant" do you have a link or something about it ? thank you for your comment
what is the basis of the shuffle?
1.5x speed
WHAT A COOL F'ING RHYTHM TO JAM ON
where is the hh open/close ?
Hi, You can play some open hihat where you want to. This is a framework for experimentation.
may be cool to chuck it sofly on the quarter notes
Put it at 1.25x speed. Start singing Something by the Beatles. Or Home at Last be Steely Dan.
4/4 ~100 bpm triplet notes
❤
I believe Mr. Purdie's version is in 6/8. This version is in 4/4, so I wouldn't consider this the classic version, but the Bonham version.

I fuck up when I do the ghost notes and the bass drum. My brain is fucking stupid.
kkkk
-2/3 polyrhythm-
This beat is devoid of feel.
how would you have looped it?
@@JM-co6rf With a real human drummer. Not everything is supposed to be dead-on time.
