It's a wonderful technique,Benny Greb also utilises this technique it adds a while other dimension to ghost notes while also allowing to play the snare with cross stick with tremendous ease
1:34 What a great shot of his cross stick finger ghost notes. That is an underrated and truly innovative feature of his playing. Next to nobody uses stick and fingers like that.
Pretty, Purdy ! The groove master !The Purdy Shuffle, my favorite beat ! I think that's one of the things I strive for most, it's getting that perfect feel ! Thank you Bernard, for the constant inspiration ! Groove on my man!
Met him in Las Vegas, having a coffee asked me about my t-shirt it had Manchester printed on the front, he asked me which state, I told him no it was England UK, he told me he was a drummer and gave me his card...OMG I checked him out when I got back home.... This guys a living Legend.... wish I could turn back time and meet him again....."Your Amazing" Bernard" Pretty" Purdie.
my comment was kind of a joke, but regardless of that or why you're so mad about it, it doesn't matter if you know who he is or not. just because it's someone's preferred style of drumming doesn't mean he's not an amazing drummer, and you can conclude that just by watching 5 seconds of this video. i'm personally more impressed by someone who has timing and groove than someone who sprints on a double bass, and uses that as a crutch. fyi, i own a double bass pedal. cheers.
Man o man thank you for posting this. Bernard Purdie has been a huge influence to me as a drummer. Amazing talent! I never knew he was on so many records either, amazing. Keep shuffling!
His last sentence was so freaking spot on. Songs have to groove. The most important thing. We kind of do a disservice to drumming first timers by teaching them the 2,4 snare rock beat as their "home base" first groove.
that sort of "brushing" with the right hand (a kind of moeller) helped me to keep triplets (2R 1L) against the kick that come on 1 / 1and / 2and / 4 (counting in 6/8) This saved my life :)
Bernard's groove is simply impeccable, it's the most relaxed yet "here it is mofo!" you'll ever hear, no person with a pulse can help but be taken in by its complete authority & charm, just like the man himself, there's no other way to put it.
I'm all into speed, which was a mistake when I started learning to play drums. But now I realize I gotta take a step back and play simpler stuff tightly first.🥺
God Bless you Purdie! Home at Last is still my favorite song to practice to for feel and timing. Being able to lay down a Purdie Shuffle is essential to being a complete drummer. Two other essential grooves to know are Kid Charlemagne and Green Earrings. Green Earrings being the more difficult of the two but also slightly more fun. Not to take away from Purdie but also check out the “in the cracks” feel of James Gadson on Use Me and Kissing My Love from Bill Withers and lastly there’s Cissy Strut and I Just Kissed My Baby by the Meters. Now that’s a drumming toolbox!
Beatles to Bernard “ Ringo cant make it- we need a drummer for Yesterday-“ Bernard “ Purdie shuffle- perfect for that tune”. He would have made it work. Brilliant.
I started playing the drums at the age of 10 in the 4th grade school band, and I wish that I got paid money just like Bernard did. I still play the drums today as a high school student. I been taking drum lessons once a week at sam ash music stores since I started 7th grade. I got my first drum set when I was in 5th grade on Christmas Day. I was super excited because I’ve been dying my whole life to have a real instrument in my house. The drum set is like a dar blue ludwig and it has 2 cymbals. My godmother got me a splash cymbal when I was in 6th grade because I wanted to have more. I am thinking about getting myself another 5 piece drum set that is light blue with 5 cymbals. I don’t play the drums in the school band anymore because I learned to play a woodwind instrument. I learned how to play the alto saxophone in 6th grade because that was another instrument I wanted to try. I switched to the bass clarinet in 7th grade, and I played the tenor saxophone in 8th grade. Now as a freshman, I play both the alto and tenor saxophone in my school band. In my high school marching band, I play the alto saxophone. I didn’t choose to play the drums in marching band because they would be too heavy on my back. So I stick to the saxophone instead. I will learn how to play the trumpet for jazz band when I go back to in person learning soon. I am thinking about switching back to the drums when I’m a junior in high school because I always wanted to play the drum set in a real band. I hope that pretty soon I would get to have a drumming career like Bernard!
@handidrummed You are correct. He is using his hands for the ghost notes. Bonham did it with the stick though. Not saying he's better or anything just did it a little different.
People who tend to despise what they don't know ought to spend some time researching and understanding "that thing" they don't know or understand, and only after that start voicing their educated (or at least somewhat informed) opinions. One doesn't hear of professional drummers bashing each other's playing styles or chosen genres, right? But yeah, I agree with you. ;) Groove talent is magical.
never realized that tapping on the snare w his fingers was part of the beat but it adds so much
It's a wonderful technique,Benny Greb also utilises this technique it adds a while other dimension to ghost notes while also allowing to play the snare with cross stick with tremendous ease
I have to try this out! Never thought to, super interesting technique
@@theflyingcrud it takes a bit of getting used to but once you do the possibilities are endless
@@hectorsanaifric343 seems like it! Definitely want to try it playing along with some Lynn Taitt and the jets
I learned about it from Gavin Harrison, it was cool coming here and seeing it
1:34 What a great shot of his cross stick finger ghost notes. That is an underrated and truly innovative feature of his playing. Next to nobody uses stick and fingers like that.
It sounds amazing
Listen to Babylon sisters steely Dan wicked!
Oh snap, that's amazing. I gotta try it
Luke Holland does that in some of his clips, I also do that when playing rim/cross sticks.
Adds a different texture and sound for sure.
John Bonham uses the Purdie shuffle in “Fool in the rain” fits perfect with the song ❤
Yup. Love it!
That was literally the first thing that came to my mind
To great effect.
He's a drumming angel
"You also got to remember that song has to groove, hehehe"
Man, he got the point.
Listen to Jeff Porcaro's drumming on the Toto hit "Rosanna." It's the Purdie Shuffle...and the late great Mr. Porcaro acknowledged it as such.
It's great. He used the Purdie Shuffle combined with a 3-2 clave on the kick to give the track a really unique groove.
@@dinglepringle1380 The kick is the bo diddley groove. jeff even said so.
Purdie has gone on the record that young Jeff P used to sit/stand behind Purdie when he was working with Jeff's dad watching and learning from Purdie
Dude I love this man! I get chills by just hearing his laughter. He inspires me.
me too!!
He has such a sweet and happy soul. God bless this man!
bonham and stweart copeland,,learned from this guy man.
yup lol
Rosanna
Include porcaro in the list
Big facts! @_o
So did Steve Smith and Jeff Porcaro
The best part is he is so graciously humble. He deserves to hold the record for most recorded drummer.
I've a feeling Hal Blaine holds that title
what an entirely wholesome human being! 80 this year, let's hope he makes it into the triple digits
If anyone deserves to make it to the.... triplets, its Purdie. Ok, I'll show myself out.

Masters of their art make it all look so easy - keep on truckin' young man.

@gyro62 Easy there, with the exclamation marks young man.
One of the most honest and soulful drummers I have ever heard. He plays exactly what he feels, and feels exactly what he plays. Such an inspiration.
ok Im convinced Bernard Purdie is the king of the badasses; he deserves the title of most recorded drummer.
I love this drummer. He distills joy when he plays.
I watch this every week. He aligns my metronome every time :)
even john bonham used the purdie shuffle in "fool in the rain"
everybody knows that Bruh
it’s how i learned the shuffle!
Man... Last of the Iconic Drummers 🎉🎉🎉
Thankyou Bernard.
And thankyou.
Thankyou.
xoxo
He's such a fun, lovable guy and is also an absolute beast on the kit. immense respect for Mr. Purdie.
We love you, Mr. Purdie. THANK YOU, for ALL the wonderful music, you've given us, over these many years! God Bless, You!
Love for Havve
This guy is so inspiring. Truly one of the greatest ever
the drummer with the best smile😁
I never thought I’d legitimately love a good shuffle groove, glad to have made time to learn this one. 😊

Kudos to the NY Times for reporting on a genuine and innovative musician who isn't the product or marketing.
Man o man thank you for posting this. Bernard Purdie has been a huge influence to me as a drummer. Amazing talent! I never knew he was on so many records either, amazing. Keep shuffling!
Hope I can see you again in San Diego blessed love , Bernard
Keep drumming Bernard! We need to keep the groove in the world!
what a pleasure it was to meet you .. can't tell what an honor it is to know you
Amen! Ja, det er viktig å tenke større. Gud velsigne deg, Purdie!
ALWAYS will be grateful to his shuffle. 💗
What a great spirit he has. Incredible man. Awesome!!!!!!😆😆😆
His last sentence was so freaking spot on. Songs have to groove. The most important thing. We kind of do a disservice to drumming first timers by teaching them the 2,4 snare rock beat as their "home base" first groove.
You can make a 4/4 rock beat groove just as deep.... Feel overrides everything....
And Mr Purdie you are the greatest groover of all Drumming Time, Right in the pocket, Absolutely love your Drumming 🥁🔥🥁🔥🥁🔥🥁🎼
This man is drumming history!!!!
All the best...
Late Night with Johnny P Show

I love How Humble he is.. 😭
i love how he plays the ghost notes with his finger tips
It's badass
God let him live this long because he knows that he'll have to give his seat back to Purdie when he passes on
Bernard's groove is simply impeccable, it's the most relaxed yet "here it is mofo!" you'll ever hear, no person with a pulse can help but be taken in by its complete authority & charm, just like the man himself, there's no other way to put it.
Bernard likes to name drop when all he needs to do drop his own name in . The man !!!
What's not to absolutely love about this man?
'Songs have to groove".
Never a truer word spoken.
When I think about the word "groove", I see Mr. Purdie in my mind.
Bonham and Pacaro have this man to thank.
OMG amazing love this guy!!
yeah baby....groovin al the way...A true master of the instrument!
I'm all into speed, which was a mistake when I started learning to play drums. But now I realize I gotta take a step back and play simpler stuff tightly first.🥺
Absolutely an iconic shuffle-timeless!
Congrats Purdie and keep on going!
The Lord of groove, and such a lovely man too.
With that being said, I wouldn't expect Jeff to play Bernard's groove better than him...or vice versa. Each has their own feel...
Off topic, but I love that Epifani 410 NYC bass cab in the background. I own one and it sounds incredible, favorite speaker cabinet of all time.
I want to be like this, when I grow old,,
Beautiful soul!
You are a tough guy, aren't you? A real hero.
GROOVE ON Bro. Purdie
That shuffle feels so good.
I love this guy
Watch it again and look at his left hand. He's tapping the snare head with his fingers on the second beat of the triplet.
cross stick ghost notes with his fingers. incredible
LOVE HIM!!!
What a great accomplishment!
Your my drum inspiration

What a lovely fella
And it's a thing of BEAUTY! Prominently featured on "Home At Last", at least - the slightly slower variation. Gotta love "Pretty" Purdie.
If you all wanna hear his greatest work, listen to him on "Oh Child" by the Five Stair Steps. He started it all.
One of the greatest drummer ever
So now I know where John Bonham got half of his stuff.
Mainly just one song. "Fool in the rain"
Now that was Purdie cool 😎!!
