South Windsor, CT, December 2022 -- The legendary Bernard Purdie recently visited TELEFUNKEN Soundstage in South Windsor, CT to participate in a tribute concert in his honor. The event was produced by Friedman, Kannenberg & Company, P.C., whom previously brought The Immediate Family to TELEFUNKEN for a similar fundraiser, with all net proceeds for both events being donated to The Asperger/Autism Network (aane.org).
Bernard “Pretty” Purdie, world’s most recorded drummer, has worked with some of the greatest artists in history, including James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie, Wilson Picket, and Steely Dan, to name a few. His unique style is so often imitated, that he even has a groove named after him: “The Purdie Shuffle.” This beat can be cleary heard on classic tracks like Steely Dan’s “Home At Last” from the iconic album Aja.
Purdie’s performance and concert were filmed and recorded live in high-resolution audio and video at TELEFUNKEN’s purpose-built microphone testing stage and laboratory. TELEFUNKEN had the exclusive unique opportunity to have Purdie break down his famous “Purdie Shuffle” groove, while capturing the performance exclusively with TELEFUNKEN microphones. In this video, Purdie gives a beat-by-beat explanation and demonstration of his famous shuffle, breaking down the independent parts and offering a fresh take on his funked-up creations.
TELEFUNKEN mics featured on this exclusive session include: The M82 on kick and M80-SH on snare from the Dynamic Series., The TF51 on toms, TF47 outside kick, and TF39 Copperhead Deluxe on center kit from the Alchemy Series., the M60 on cymbals and snare, and the ELA M 260 in a Decca Tree configuration from the SDC Series, with a pair of C12s on overheads and a pair of ELA M 251E as room mics from TELEFUNKEN’S Diamond Series.

I've had the honor and privilege of playing with Purdie for the last 35 years or so. His is the deepest pocket I've ever encountered. God bless you, Bernard.
Did he ever do his little scat humming while drumming with the band? 😂😂
@@Prodby3128 He did, and every once in a while he'll actually sing a tune! He's a pretty good singer, and his musical instincts are second to none.
Definitely Blessed. Deeeep POCKET
His pocket is *so* deep, James Cameron wants to explore it with a sub.
Thats amazing, can you tell him we love him next time you see him x
Dont get me wrong, gospel chops are awesome, blast beats and fast playing are impressive, jazz grooves are amazing but this here.......this. this is why I still play drums and have done for almost 30 years. My favourite drummer of all time, and anyone reading this who plays and has never tried to nail the Purdie shuffle....when you do try, it will make you realise actually how amazing this legend is. I've been practising that groove everyday for 3 years now, and have only just started to get a bit smoother......another 30 and I still wouldnt be any where near as smooth as Bernard hahaha!
Man I feel you. I've been obsessed with the purdie shuffle lately, playing it all day long, not getting bored one second. That shit puts you in a transe. Purdie is a treasure :)
Get the shuffle on a loop and just see how many different bass lines you can write to it. It's endless.
Great idea 💡 👍
That’s awesome, Shitty Bill! You should jam to Carter McLean as well… Carter is a phenomenal player and has tons of videos of just drums.
just did that. Always learning.
Remarkable. This is a drumming genius. His work with Fagen and Becker is incredible. What a treasure - 9 minutes plus of this and not a single beat less than perfect.
That's the essence of drumming, a pure feeling
This guy has more grooves than a fresh set of tires. More pockets than a trench coat.
More class than all the schools of the world!
How could anyone not love this cat, Mr Bernard Purdie 💎🌟🎵❤️
This is not a drum class, this is a sermon about drumming! You can feel the energy, you can feel the attitude. I could listen to his shuffle all day long, almost like a guided meditation.
Incredible drummer.
"I could listen to his shuffle all day long"... Amen, Brother!
Amen. 8:40 (Just a thought but) "Attitude. Keep the tempo slower (put a smile on your face) , Don't be angry when you're playing the Purdie Shuffle (following God's beats and make everyone see it), because the Bass player (God) we'll carry you right along, and the next person carrying you is going to be the Keyboardist (Jesus) Getting ready in the joints and of course, the guitar player (The Holy Spirit) they comes a little later and satan will stay out of the way.... thank you"
It has nothing to do with The Gospel except for the part that got you to admit you have an innate capacity for worship
@@einarabelc5 Neither does farmers, seeds, or fish, but Jesus used parables to say deeper things. Don't be so quick to miss the meaning behind things.
we are all in the choir!!
He even talks in time
Such a legend
Home at Last.😊💯💗
Master
Babylon Sisters....Shake it...
What a treasure he is!
Long live Bernard Purdie
That snare sounds absolutely fantastic
well, yes, but let's be real. it is not the instrument, it is absolutely the sound of genius Bernard Purdie!
His hands sound fantastic lucky snare
@@bradlloyd6261 definitely
Rick Beato did an interview with Purdie and they cover his setup such as high hat clutches, cymbal tape, snares, where & hot to hit, etc.
Gorgeous snare. Ideal.
could it be that I have found my home at last?
I see what you did there... 😏
I wish a can see Mr Bernard playing with Abraham Laboriel, will be epic
Nobody plays like him, absolutely amazing... I love progressive metal drumming, but nothing can beat an honest Purdie Shuffle.
Thats FEEL young drummers out there! For real! Peace from Detroit MI.
This man is a legend
just imagine, he's a man that influenced both John Bonham & Jeff Porcaro. a living treasure of music. just wow.
😂❤❤❤❤❤❤cool groove your spirit with in
When Purdie starts playing it's like shut up sit down and listen time for me,I absolutely love this guy!!God bless him!♥️🗽🥁
I had the honor of watching this amazing talent at one our local clubs in NC. Then had the pleasure and honor to meet him after the gig! What an amazing man and talent! Bless you, Bernard!
The best drummer to put his foot in the world! He's the DNA of everything, he is music, he is history, he is Bernard Pretty Purdie
P.S: Jeff Porcaro thanks for telling me about him
stop with that childish "best' stuff. It isn't real. .. and if it was, he isn't.
@@morbidmanmusic for you brother, for me, he is the best
He's not just a drummer, he's the whole band!!!!
I've done deep dives into drummers like Neil Peart, Thomas Lang, Jimmy Sullivan, and Mike Portnoy. My dive into the drumming of Bernard Purdie has improved my drumming as much or more than any of them. He's helping me put some swing and much more groove and feel into my drumming, which is opening a door to many more different types of music that I didn't think I'd enjoy playing as much. Yesterday I was playing a bunch of Sade songs and hypnotizing myself into a state of pure bliss : )
Damn, what a groove. That kick-drum is speaking to me. Dat RIDE-CYMBAL!
Beautiful! What a Master!!! Long Live Sir Bernard Purdie!
This man has such a great energy to him
Amazing!
I could watch this man for hours... always amazing!
Mr. Purdie's high-hat chops are simply phenomenal!
- Solo Con A - Thanks Master!!. Desde Argentina
Legend 🙏🏻
God bless you 🙏
This is refreshing to see ❤
Thanks god this is filmed …. What a genius. So much attitude
yessir
Damn, bringing a tear to my eye over here… What a legend and a beautiful person 🖤🖤🖤
This satisfies every requirement my bassist musical mind wants. It’s amazing.
I love this.
I got hooked on that beat my whole life. That's all I need to groove. Thank you. You own it all. Man, I wish you were my teacher.
this beat is life. It's very hard to master, but the quest to get there is very joyous, and when you finally get the train going steadily, it feels like the beat lives (leaves?) on its own. So rewarding :)
@@PiwaiGee Been working on mastering this beat for a very long time. Mr Perdie makes it look so simple. Such a joy to watch this happy human metronome work his magic. Absolute legend!
Try playing it at 1.25x and even 1.5x this shit GOOOOOO
His ghost notes are the cherry on the sundae!
Groove, Groove, Groove.....
Pure Gold!
My favorite drummer of all-time
He is a Album all by himself. That's amazing! Thanks for posting.
His playing is Swiss watch precise, and he makes it seem effortless
With his eyes closed. Amazing.
Eyes closed and having a full on conversation at the same time keeping perfect time on the shuffle. That's what mastery looks like
I wish Bonham and Porcaro were still here to watch, learn and join in.....
That is an onboxious amount of microphones for a drumset of this size.
Purdie's swing plays around within the beat so much. It's just oozing with soul.
Best video on RUclips! 🔥🔥🔥
One of the COOLEST KATS on the Planet.
This is what drumming should be about. Joy. He is smiling and laughing while locked in the pocket. I hate to say it but too many Drummers I have come across have bad attitudes especially if they feel like they have more or better chops than you. Just have fun, music is supposed to make you feel good
a true master of his craft and a leading example of what is known and respected today ...excellent!
I wonder how the sound engineers have always managed to exclude his accompanying valuable comments from the recordings...😅
Bernie has been counting out his heartbeats since he was born.
That’s Bernard in the pic with me on Beale Street.
A gracious legend.
Man, he is 83 years old! Amazing!
8:3
I’m a better person for having watched this video
I was waiting for him to say "yes lawd"! 😆
Dude is grooving!!!!
Anyone who thinks the half time Shuffle is easy to play is Wrong!! I am still practicing it and Although I have the hands mostly down, adding the kick had proven troublesome!! Same (Similar) groove in Fool in the Rain by Zeppelin and Rosanna Shuffle by Toto (Porcaro)
Best drummer ever. He really is!! This man has a tremendous spirit and gets you engaged with the rhythm like no other drummer.
Bonham used it for. "Fool in the Rain" and Porcaro used for in "Rozanna"
We know.
he tells his watch what time it is
Pretty Purdie is the GOAT!!
The man with the never ending style.
Even the great Jeff Porcaro stole the drum beat for Rosanna (Toto) from the Purdie shuffle. NOBODY grooves like Bernard!!!!
I wish Mr. Perdie taught Algebra.
Magnifico.💯💯💯💯💯💯
This is it’s done with east coast drummers they play with attitude and more rhythm control with a definite beat and control in timing personally as a former east coast drummer I couldn’t never understand while drummers beat the hell out of drums all over the place with no rhythmic place to go upbeat with funky downbeats dropping off beat bombs in timing and double clutching on minor breaks going to and from drives that’s what I call being in the saddle and hey drummers what ever happened to rim shots in the back beats isn’t that we’re the real funk used to be ?
אתה מותק חזק
I don’t play drums, but I sure loved this video.
I’m a beginner and the first shuffle I’ve started learning is the Rosanna shuffle (stupid thing for a beginner I know) but seeing this video makes me realize I need to learn this first
I had a feeling the keyboard would be the 3rd to carry the groove, then guitar, just makes sense🗽🥁
Be honest Telefunken, Ringo came in and sweetened these tracks didn't he!? jk Both still drumming legends!
I wonder just how how many time that Mr Purdie has performed the fragment of his incredible career?
i skip along through so many youtube videos because ADHD but this one i watched start to finish because it was so hypnotizing. also did he drop the beat at 2:25 and not pick it back up on the 1 on purpose?
Because ADHD? What does that even mean?
You can definately hear the roots of the drumstyles of many other genres
This man is a fkn stud
Wow! Using finger taps on the snare for ghost notes while cross sticking. Incredible! Learned something new!
So sympathic! Love this guys energy and his feel for the music🧡
once in a while you have to come back to this, absolute legend.
Honestly, I can't think of another beat that I'd spend as much time listening to as this one.
Thanks for the free multitrack of this! So much fun to play around with.
This man's face needs to be on one of our paper bills! At least a stamp!
May GOD Bless you always Bernard.......
And Forever!
He talks so grooooovy.
Love this man!
It doesn't feel as good when I play it. Gotta' work on my attitude.
I beg to differ if there is anyone on earth anywhere close to this groovemaster
パーディシャッフルみたいでかっけえ!
Absolutey an amazing experience!
I'd be happy just to mumble as groovy as this guy does as he plays
Pure Genius! no gel on those drums let them sing.
Outstanding Orignal Style Thank you Pretty Purdie for being a Super Funky Gentleman 👑👑👑👑👑👑🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🏅🏅🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
How the hell is he getting the snare to sound like that!!! I need his tuning tips
Always know where the 1 is.
Always dress to the 9s
