I used to be an extreme metal musician (still am) and this takes me back too believe it or not :) not much more satisfying in this world than watching a bunch expert musicians groove along like this 😎
@@soundboardist I never said i was, and i was referring to this video and jazz in general, but if you're saying no metal musician is a master in their own right, you don't know much/anything about how complex and intricate metal can be. Its a slept on genre because people assume its just making noise with no structure....kinda like people thought the same with rock and jazz. They're all wrong :) Google Tosin Abasi if you think that, currently the worlds best guitarist.
@@soundboardist I understand that a lot of people think that but its just not true. Its like saying "all pop music is shallow and bad", first of all what constitutes pop music is broad enough to encompass the Beatles David Bowie etc so that statement would be a simple misunderstanding of what the genre is, or at least a gross oversimplification of it. The same is with metal, as a genre it has more sub genres than any other style of music that has ever existed...certainly not a trademark of a basic form of music that even a 12 year old could write. Modern metal is extremely complex and makes use of complex musical ideas like polyrhythms, atonal/modal interchange melodies....It isn't just a case of one genius writer in a simple form of music, this isn't house music....i would challenge you, if you play an instrument, to play even a simple song in the genre of "djent", a modern metal genre that is anything but simple. You clearly don't listen to it so why do you assume that you know everything about it? I'm not talking about "iron maiden" here, you clearly do not listen to technical metal (that's its actual name). A lot of metal today is instrumental or doesn't have the screaming vocals in it that probably puts you off. Type "animals as leaders" in youtube. Then type "meshuggah" then type "sikth" then type "intronaut"....i could do this all day. You are wrong good sir. And i bet you won't check any of them out will you :) you might just be surprised to what constitutes metal these days.
@@soundboardist fair enough then i disagree that its tonally basic you would need to dive a bit further into the albums to maybe realise that but I never thought you were an asshole lol i just disagreed with what you were saying. Too many people take difference of opinion as a personal insult these days lol.

@@gavineckler4545 Often I'm accused of being wordy and pedantic, but some concepts you can't spell out with cliches and memes and emoticons. I have given it a lot of thought because i have been stuck on pick up gigs with "guys that couldn't groove their way out of a wet paper bag if their lives depended on it". Nothing worse. And nothing better than being locked in, playing effortlessly, riding a smooth, solid groove. thanks. Cheers. (smiling) Here's somebody that obviously gave it more thought than i did L;DR Leaving few details out, I'd define it as multiple overlapping swings with beat/accents that all instruments lock into (rhythm-responsible instruments should keep sync most frequently & accurately). The overall feel can be varied by offsetting each instruments timing (playing bit ahead the 'beat/accent' or behind). In improvisation if other players perceive a feel change and then change what they do it can cause a chaos as everyone adjusts what they do - perhaps one player changed feel for syncopation-like effect - if everyone in band changes in response the desired effect falls apart. Some coordination/agreement/leading is thus needed for improvisation if one likes doing such tricks. Found this recent book because it referred a paper where academics clearly had recognized one part of the "pocket". (it's not just "band playing in sync". You can get things play in sync in a computer sequencer and it won't be the pocket that people in know talk about - in my dictionary pocket is something that gets atleast some people (*NFP is probably "dancer personality") moving to the music. Otherwise you could say all electronic music is "in the pocket" - I used to do electronic music and to get the pocket I had to find optimal tempo and adjust swings and shuffles for drums first and then play to those) www.amazon.com/Expressiveness-music-performance-Empirical-approaches/dp/0199659648 This is the paper. www.speech.kth.se/prod/publications/files/822.pdf It focuses on adjustment that musically talented players do to their swing in relation to large changes in tempo. One explanation for this is that as the tempo changes enough, the time slice in which invidual note timing swings (shifts around a midpoint) changes in length. Instruments (ADSR) envelope may not be easily changeable (without effects rack) causing the need to adjust your playing so the feel of the swing remains noticeable. The drums (how long their sound sustains) or whatever rhythm instrument that is most in focus determines the optimal tempo through the notes envelope and overlap. Faster tempo requires reducing sustain/release time, faster attacks in order to avoid the sounds getting so overlapped that the feel is lost. Swing (this is what creates the "feel" or urge to dance, the "pocket" is when all players are able to play around the swing - all feeling the swing) : Study of some computer-tracked songs that clearly groove highlighted that the song under study didn't actually have an instrument based swing parameter. Instead the composer was rapidly alternating entire project between two tempos. After lot of listening I conclude that the most skilled compositions may actually have multiple simultaneous swings of different frequency. Swing opportunities: 1) "dialogue" - compose the track in a manner where a variation of same theme is played twice with some modifications (vary the arpeggio, instrument etc) - in particular, tempo. So part of the song is in a different tempo. Typical in classical music. This won't create a pocket, just a "dialogue" between instruments. Perhaps one part/instrument is upbeat and then followed by another more slower and melancholic feel. 2) traditional easy to play swing: When you have your optimal tempo figured out, don't play at that tempo but actually play at say -2% and +2% BPM around it, smoothly alternating the tempo between each half interval (8 beats). 3) dance music swing: have the notes swing also (achieved eg. by the rapid tempo variation explained or instrument specific swing parameter)

Imagine being the camera man and having to stand still...
I can't imagine
Impossible task at the very least you have to bob your head and pat your foot.
This going the hard jobb
Maybe they're so used to it, their arms are like gimbals. So you know, their heads and knees are groovin.
This is why steady shot was invented
This instrumental "It's On" stands out over the last 7 years as Number 1, Giants!!!! Thank you from Vienna
Also playing this in Vienna :)
"Togetherness" RIP George D. You're still keeping us 'Together'' 🙏
this live performance is SO GOOD, just the way they look at each other is so powerful. the joy in they’re faces makes me cry of happiness and then the accompanying music is so incredibly beautiful
also my dad showed me this the first time and it makes me so happy watching this for all the reasons above
Having such music one never needs any other drugs at all. This is inspiring and soothing all at once.
This takes me back to the time when I and my best friends would gather together, cook up a storm, tell lies and laugh until we cried and enjoy each others company. Old school jamming at it's best.
Ye what happend to that time, nowadays we live ina different era sadly
Too many people take difference of opinion as a personal insult these days lol.
in my time george duke, joe sample, bob james. i play 40 years piano. but never in that class. Thank you for showing. L G Majo König Berlin Germany
So sad George is not here anymore. A so spirited and soulful musician - thanks for all these funky tunes he left us for the future. Will never stop cooling down to George after long work days!
Impressive Keys, the fretless Bass realy flashed with the solo, even fretless the intonation was alway perfect set. Great Performance
"I always have two keyboarders in the band, because nobody serves the broad stylistic range I need, EXCEPT George Duke." (Frank Zappa)
👍
Maybe late Bernie Worrel ,from classical to space funk!

Since the 70 's as a teenager I was always was amazed how George Duke master the sounds of funk, jazz, jazz fusion. brazilian jazz and yes beautiful love music. A shear genius.
Point taken, but just wanted to add that "shear" is what you do to a sheep.
Georger Duke, thankyou for this gem.
These guys love what they do and for us the fans, loving what they do is a bonus for them. I love this.
Yes ! Seeing them live and especially George reminds us how talented they were. This deservers 11 million watches...
Sometimes it really is easy to forget just how phenomenal a musician George Duke was.
These guys are masters of their instruments and they know it, and they're having a great time. So sad that George Duke passed away.
these guys jammed like they've been doing this when they were highschool
they probably were
My #1 favorite #Jazz video on RUclips. If you listen to this and can't get in a good mood, then I have nothing for you.
Dance in your seat, man!! 😂🎉 Celebrate life to this amazing, uplifting song. ✌🏼, ❤️& Jazz!
Watched this more than 50 times yet I still get goosebumps
Drummer with his hidden powers
Me too. And I am not a drummer.
it's Tony Royster Jr. , amazing drummer , search for a video when he has 12 years old , it's amazing!
@@CentroIgeneMentegatti u are wrong the drummer is Ronald Bruner Jr 🤨. Tony Royster Jr is another amazing drummer but at least is not the one playing in this video.
If you've ever heard the term "deep pocket" and wondered what it meant, this is it. You'd need a ladder to get out of this pocket.
I couldn't have said it BETTER my brother :-)
I don't get what "deep pocket" is, can anyone explain?
Kleinequietboy Kleinequietboy thanks a lot, i'll remember it!
Kleinequietboy Kleinequietboy This is the most well thought out and solid explanation of this concept that I have ever heard.
And nothing better than being locked in, playing effortlessly, riding a smooth, solid groove.
thanks. Cheers. (smiling)
Here's somebody that obviously gave it more thought than i did
L;DR Leaving few details out, I'd define it as multiple overlapping swings with beat/accents that all instruments lock into (rhythm-responsible instruments should keep sync most frequently & accurately).
Otherwise you could say all electronic music is "in the pocket" - I used to do electronic music and to get the pocket I had to find optimal tempo and adjust swings and shuffles for drums first and then play to those)

This is the paper. www.speech.kth.se/prod/publications/files/822.pdf
It focuses on adjustment that musically talented players do to their swing in relation to large changes in tempo.
Swing (this is what creates the "feel" or urge to dance, the "pocket" is when all players are able to play around the swing - all feeling the swing) :
Study of some computer-tracked songs that clearly groove highlighted that the song under study didn't actually have an instrument based swing parameter. Instead the composer was rapidly alternating entire project between two tempos.
After lot of listening I conclude that the most skilled compositions may actually have multiple simultaneous swings of different frequency.
Swing opportunities:
1) "dialogue" - compose the track in a manner where a variation of same theme is played twice with some modifications (vary the arpeggio, instrument etc) - in particular, tempo.
The drummer can not be human 💖
Hamdi Khalifa #Ronald_Bruner
im better
@@elvinenadeghe7882 Man, the Bruner's are a super talented family

James Newbury Well I checked your channel and there's nothing on the and you have no subscribers so until you give me proof, I'm gonna go with the safe bet and say that guy is better
This performance proves why George was and still is one of the absolute best musicians to ever play 💯💯💯❤️❤️❤️
I ABSOLUTELY ADORE GEORGE DUKE!!! He is my ALL-TIME FAVORITE MUSICIAN! Had the divine pleasure of seeing him in New Jersey 2 decades ago. Met and talked with him backstage. He was such a sweetheart. I told him my sister is a keyboardist too and he told me to send him a demo of her work. There is no one better or funkier. His chords are out of this world! Still get sad knowing that he is not with us anymore, BUT his music lives on and I have SEVERAL of his works!
I keep coming back to this video, amazing stuff!
I'm with you. 10 times in the last week or so. I can't get enough of it.
Oh boy the drummer was waiting for his turn so bad
😂 oh, ronald loves to go ham on his drums...
Haha, i know
Yeah man, im like grabbing my head while he went crazy. that was insane man. that was sick. one of the best drumming moments I've ever seen.
yeah, i cracked up when i read this comment, then when he wrecked shop, i had to come back. we was just simmering with all those things to say real quick!
The Drum Solo was awfull in my opinion ^.^
I love everything about this performance: The musicality, the connection between him and the player, laid back drum beats, great solos, and an overall sound that just nails it perfectly...
If you have watched this entirely without smiling at least once, you're truly a monster.
I smiled a lot!
I smiled the whole goddamn time.
i laugh even before the start, i failed the challenge too eartly, that's cool!
100% one of the smoothiest bass solo I've ever heard
6:15 It's amazing how the drummer is going wild around the kit but still manages to play the musical phrasing along with the keyboard and bass during his solo
That might be the best snare drum tone I've ever heard in my life.
They're just some good ol' boys having the time of their life. This is pure joyous musicality. :D
