Lesson 1 - Foot Technique (John Bonham)

  • Well, after so many of you have asked for me to explain what I'm doing and to show a profile of my bass drum technique I have finally done both requests in one vid. If you have questions about anything, be sure to ask. I hope you benefit from this in some way.
I'd like to stress that this technique is not the formal or conventional way to execute the "heel toe" technique, my version, (from what I've seen Bonham played this way too), is an offspring and is meant for an unported bass drum. A ported one is not as "fussy" and burying the beater has no consequences to the sound.

I searched this lesson only to see if a detail I had long self thought and realised myself in my youth years of studying this John Bonham groove was also taught and shown here by an online tutor! My finding? Yes! His drummer teaches exactly the refined detail of lifting the beater off the head when playing this. Why should I care about this though? It's an enormous aspect behind the quality of the sound of the bass drum part within the piece. Bigger, rounder and fuller. Afforded by technical control and not post edit studio manipulation. Manipulation not around at the time of Bonham's recording life. a manipulation that can afford short cutting modern drummers an easier performance just like auto tune can singers today. This teacher doesn't miss this nor dismisses this aspect. Great lesson and great attention to detail. I recommend and I apologize for seeking flaw initially. I'm protective of this beat and what it means to my personal development, to have this detail realised and encouraged by this drummer here makes me feel more part of the community musically value wise and I'm happy to have enjoyed watching this lesson and demonstration by this teacher

At last, another drummer that actually knows how to play Bonham's stuff correctly! There are too many people out there playing it wrong, so hopefully some of them see your vids and correct the mistakes and pay the man and his work with the respect it deserves. I have been a Zep fan literally since my earliest memories, cause my father was a huge fan, and John is the reason I fell in love with drums in the first place.

  • @mickavellian

GOD DAMN .. FINALLY a drum video where the vlogger goes down to brass tacks from second one. . No 25 minutes of explaining the technique or the position of the foot paralell to the floor , just a lil cameo when something needed explaining .
Heel & Toe never sounds emphatic or carries the same volume from beat to beat. It can be fast but it is sloppy (in my experience) Your first pass with pure speed direct vertical motion , man THAT is the way to do it BY THE BOOK
MY MAN - YOU got the teaching touch and one hell of a right foot!

It's almost as if they intentionally created so many Bonham lessons to try to bury you in the RUclips World. Not to be rude but if they did, there's a damn good reason why: You are a Master Drummer, Drumeo is a Corporate entity that just want to make a profit with generally white baby faced kids trying to play like Bonham and others. I'm sure they are sponsored by Tama or some other big corporate entity that makes drums. You sir are the real deal. You are a one man entity.

@GrooveDrummin I had a set of cheap bongos my sister gave me and used wooden chop sticks for my first drum set. I was desperate as well...My parents still didn't see my love for the drums so it wasn't until I was an adult that I bought my own set. I did find that the desks at school, the ones with a flip up lid, had a very cool sound and I did a lot of hand drumming on those. Anything that I could hit to make the drum sound satisfied my need!

I've seen people using lots of reverb to get this sound. This is just pure technique and it's beautiful.

Thanks for watching. That's a nice kit you have there. You can easily achieve the sound you want, try this...
coated single ply batter with a falam pad tensioned medium-loose, unported reso single ply tuned a little tighter than batter. For muffling use a felt strip on either side and nothing inside. This should give you the Morello sound.

Thanks Dan. It almost seems like a controlled slap and quickly catching the rebound
